[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2010-10-26 Thread Jon Packard
Delyan,
Thank you for your help! I forgot to mention that I used to do that in Lucid
before the xorg.conf workaround. Sadly that doesn't seem to help in Maverick. I
wonder if downgrading to an older version of nvidia drivers would help.

[Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2010-10-25 Thread Jon Packard
I just did a fresh install of Maverick 64-bit on my HP EliteBook 8440p
with NVS 3100m graphics. I still had to use nomodeset to install and
to boot thereafter, but that's not an issue. After installing the nVidia
proprietary drivers, I found that whenever my notebook tries to power
its screen off, it gets stuck as black and has to be restarted to fix.
The computer is still responsive, since I can ctrl-alt-del, enter, tab,
enter to poweroff. I have tried adding the [Option RegistryDwords
EnableBrightnessControl=1] line to the device section of my xorg.conf
and rebooting, just as I did in Lucid. Unlike in Lucid, this did not
resolve my issue. My nvidia driver version is 260.19.06-0ubuntu1. Could
anyone please suggest any workarounds I could try? I can suspend just
fine, but I often like to shut my screen and let my notebook continue
working. Thank you in advance.

[Bug 558674] Re: Open file dialog malfunctions in lucid

2010-08-25 Thread Jon Packard
I also recommend increasing the importance on this bug. I have been
experiencing this problem for at least two months, on several computers
running Ubuntu 10.04. At best, it's an inconvenience, having to try to
pick the file correctly several times. At worst, it could lead to
serious privacy concerns. Are there any knowledgeable people working on
a fix for this? It's been over a month since there has been any activity
on this bug.

[Bug 570269] Re: luicid RC1 live cd boots to blank screen on Dell latitude E6410 with Nvidia Nvs 3100M

2010-05-17 Thread Jon Packard
I get the same behavior trying to boot to Lucid 64-bit live CD on my HP
EliteBook 8440p with nvidia NVS 3100M graphics. I was able to use the
nomodeset to install and on first boot until I installed the
proprietary nvidia drivers. The other problems I run into are:

-I cannot adjust the brightness - it is all or nothing. (Bug #562005)
-Whenever I close my screen without suspending (just turns the screen off), I
have to switch to a VT and back to turn my screen back on. (probably related to
the previous problem)

I suspect my remaining problems can be attributed to problems with the
proprietary drivers.

@Tom
I was running Kubuntu on a Dell Latitude D630 (Core2Duo with Intel

Still broken in 10.4 release :-( Only now it's worse because when the

I am experiencing the same problem switching between two users using

white. I can unlock by typing my password and hitting enter but it took
me a while to figure this out and was very confusing at first. I'm

I was experiencing a similar issue except the installer reverted to the
location selection step. I was using the Kubuntu Alpha4 live CD. I also
could not mount my extended partitions after exiting the installer. It
told me the device does not exist. After rebooting the partitions could
be read normally. I think this bug may be related to bug 324987 -

[Bug 25496] Re: toRam or copy2Ram (run ubuntu live from ram)

2009-02-02 Thread Jon Packard
I created a simple bootable Intrepid image by following directions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch and am
booting it from my USB drive. I first tried it with toram and it had
no effect. I then tried TORAM=yes and it worked without any problems.
I did not have to do any keyboard combination to make it work. Perhaps
there has been some improvement on this since last September. I also
tested this with an old 8.04 RC disc I had laying around. I had to do
the ALT+SYSRQ+E trick, but otherwise it worked fine.

I had the same results. I can boot the Debian vmlinuz-2.6.26-1-versatile

[Bug 290391] [NEW] Parcellite causes system to freeze

2008-10-28 Thread Jon Packard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: parcellite

Expected result: Run Parcellite. Click on icon in notification area to change
clipboard contents.
Actual result: Upon clicking on icon in notification area, the Parcellite menu
does not appear. The mouse can still move but the computer is unresponsive. I
am able to switch to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1). I ran Top and found that
parcellite is using 99.9% of the CPU cycles. After running killall
parcellite, I am able to switch back to the desktop and continue normal use.
This began after a recent update. Rebooting the system did not help; I get the
same result every time.

Thank you for reporting the problem you experienced and for helping to
improve Ubuntu. Please provide the information described here to help us

see Wrong resolutions, refresh rates, or monitor specs.

Additionally, you could try using displayconfig-gtk (Hit Alt-F2, then
run 'gksu displayconfig-gtk') to configre your screens. It should give
you more options than Screen Resolution. If that does not work, you may
need to manually configure your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Here are a few

Thank your for reporting this problem and for helping improve Ubuntu. I
believe this may be a duplicate of Bug #192888. Do you have flashplugin-
nonfree installed? If so, try removing it with Synaptic and see if you
can still duplicate the crash. I experienced similar problems (seemingly
random Firefox crashes) and resolved it by using a beta release of
flashplugin-nonfree. The crashes are gone, but I can't say that the beta
of flashplugin-nonfree is without issues (namely video quality). If you

[Bug 250557] Re: Firefox don't remember me with the cookies, but cookies exist

2008-07-21 Thread Jon Packard
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
* Are you telling Firefox to save your passwords, using a remember me option
on the websites, or both?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

[Bug 250509] Re: Kernel 2.6.26 bug

2008-07-21 Thread Jon Packard
Kernel 2.6.26-4 is the kernel used in Intrepid Ibex, the development
version of Ubuntu. Would you be able to verify this problem with
Intrepid? You can download it here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing - this
will help determine if it is a problem with the kernel itself or a
problem in Kanotix. Thanks!

Unfortunately, since the problem was not experienced in Ubuntu, we will
not be able to accurately reproduce the problem you experienced. It does
not appear that Kanotix is registered with Launchpad, otherwise the bug
could easily be moved to their project. I was unable to find a page for
you to report bugs with Kanotix at, but this may have some useful links:

I am trying to confirm this on my Virtualbox running Intrepid. I run 'sudo

install. Within a few seconds, tasksel exits with the following error:
xserver-xorginstall

I ran 'sudo apt-get update' to verify that my cache was up to date and

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 250203] Re: The Menu capture all the keyboard buttons

2008-07-20 Thread Jon Packard
Thank you for taking the time to report the problems you've experienced
and helping to improve Ubuntu. Multimedia keys are set up globally, not
per program. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultimediaKeys for
information regarding this. If your multimedia keys are correctly
configured and you are having trouble with them in a specific program,
such as Rhythmbox, please file a bug report with details about the
hardware you are using and which programs they do and do not work in.
Also, in the future, please remember to file one bug per separate
problem. They are much more manageable when they are filed individually.

As for the menu problem, simply click outside the menu or hit the Escape
key to leave the menu, then switch to the program that you need. As for
changing the way this works, we appreciate your suggestion. However, the
changes you are requesting aren't really a bug and require more
discussion, which should be done on an appropriate mailing list or
forum. http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists might be a
good start for determining which mailing list to use.

[Bug 250199] Re: firefox under Ubuntu does not work with latest kernel

2008-07-20 Thread Jon Packard
Thank you for taking the time to report the problem you experienced and for
helping to improve Ubuntu. Could you please provide more details as to what
happens when you run Firefox? Also, you mentioned the latest kernel, which
leads me to think that you recently changed your kernel. The current kernel for
Hardy is 2.6.24-19-generic. You reported that you are running 2.6.22-14-generic
(sounds like you may have upgraded from a previous version of Ubuntu). If there
is a problem with your kernel, you could most likely remedy it by opening a
terminal and running this command:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic
Then reboot and make sure to choose the latest kernel from your boot menu (it
should be the default).

[Bug 241847] Re: busybox when istalling with wubi

2008-07-17 Thread Jon Packard
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 236307 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/236307

The end result is the same as bug 241847, but the steps to get the
result are different. This bug is about a problem installing Ubuntu with
Wubi. Bug 241847 is about a problem after a successful installation and
installing updates. My next thought was that perhaps this was a problem
with the packages included on 8.04.1 (which I was using). The bug was
originally reported on 6/21 and the 8.04.1 release date was 7/3, so it
was reported with both releases. This particular issue has nothing to do
with updates. I suggest that this should not be marked as a duplicate.

[Bug 245383] Re: Screen flickers when loading applications

2008-07-12 Thread Jon Packard
** Description changed:

I'm using a NVidia GeForce 8600GT video card and experience problems
when using the nv and nouveau xorg drivers. When I use the vesa driver,
the problem is not present. During login and whenever an application is
- launched my entire screen flashes black repeatedly. I have been unable
- to test the proprietary driver against this problem: the nvidia-glx-new
- driver module fails to load and the official installer file refuses to
- run (says the kernel is incompatible due to having Xen support). I had
- none of these problems in Hardy (tested nv and nvidia drivers).
+ launched my entire screen flashes black repeatedly. I did not experience
+ these problems in Hardy (tested nv and nvidia drivers).

- I'm using Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha1.
+ Problem has happened with both Intrepid Alpha1 and Alpha2 releases.

+ nouveau - flicker problem
+ vesa - no problems
+ nvidia - failed to load module
