[Bug 377006] [NEW] Invalid root UUID during server upgrade from 8.10 -> 9.04
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager-core Culprit package: update-manager-core Culprit command: do-release-upgrade Breaks package: grub Impact: System not bootable / complete system failure upon reboot Summary: When performing the upgrade from Ubuntu Server 8.10 to 9.04 the generated menu.lst is invalid with regards to the root UUID kernel parameter. Context: My system is an Intel Mac Mini with an internal SATA disk and an external USB disk connected. I've got the three traditional partitions boot (ext3), root (ext3) and swap on the internal disk and one ext3 partition wrapped in a volume group on the external USB drive. My device to UUID mapping looks like the following before and after the upgrade UUID = ff929bbd-ec9b-4afc-b64a-0839fcb67be6(sda1 => /boot) UUID = 9d9559fe-75e8-49ab-a684-5744d77984a4 (sda2 => /) UUID = 92cf9ba6-edcb-4f10-b017-6b5e7f9111ff (sda3 => swap) Problem: During the execution of do-release-upgrade the value for the root property in the menu.lst entries get assigned the UUID value d476b48f-bb64-4fb5-a596-9eb7aa9c30af for some odd reason. I do not have such a device listed in /dev/disk/by-uuid/ and must conclude that there is a bug in the tool which causes it to generate this seemingly random number. Workaround: Before being asked to reboot, restore the original UUIDs to the root parameter by replacing the invalid ones generated. For me, the UUID for the boot partition was correctly identified by the update program which meant at least I didn't have to fix that piece in menu.lst. Others may not be so lucky so to make certain, also check the boot partition UUID. The easiest way is to delete menu.lst file generated by the upgrade program and then run update-grub to generate a new menu.lst file. This generated file *has correct UUIDs* !. A variant for those who have customized their grub files is naturally to do a copy-paste excercise of the new list entry for the updated kernel into their old file and then to fix the root UUID by making sure its the same as the corresponding value in their Ubuntu 8.10 version of the menu.lst. ** Affects: update-manager-core (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Invalid root UUID during server upgrade from 8.10 -> 9.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/377006 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yesterday I did a kernel update via the Ubuntu apt repository from kernel 2.6.28-11 to 2.6.28-13 on two different machines and the same problem occurred. Re: [Bug 301892] Re: usb audio Audio Kontrol 1 crashes xserver bad - hal, evdev issue on Intrepid?
Hello, I am new to "all of this" (Launchpad, ubuntustudio, bug reporting), so I'm not sure I'm sending this mail to the right people/person. I'm sending it to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. My reasons are as follows. I recently installed Ubuntustudio 8.10 and had some trouble, not sure if studio makes any difference the problem seem similar, I have gotten the card(Audio Kontrol 1) to play sound via PulseAudio, but x crashes both (seemingly) randomly and whenever I rotate the knob on the Audio Kontrol 1 unit. When the knob is rotated an "f" is printed on the uper left of the screen, then login eventually (usually but not always) return. If I can help, please let me know by providing beginner friendly instructions. I sending this mail with hopes of once again experiencing my Audio Kontrol 1 - AKG K 702 combo*. *I don't use it to simply listen to music, I use it to *enjoy* music. ;) Happy bug solving! [Bug 159552] [gutsy] econtact conduit puts phone numbers in incorrect field
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-pilot-conduits This bug is reproducible on the current version of evolution (2.12.0-ubuntu5), with the current version of gnome pilot (2.0.15-2ubuntu2) and a palm treo 600. When syncing from evolution to a newly wiped treo, contacts in evolution that have "Business Phone" are moved across to the palm as both a "work" number and also as an "other" number. This creates problems because on the next sync, the numbers get moved back, duplicating numbers for every contact with a business phone. In a large address book, this can create tens of hours of work to clean up after. ** Affects: gnome-pilot-conduits (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [gutsy] econtact conduit puts phone numbers in incorrect field https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159552 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 201705] [NEW] Hardy hangs while starting sys log daemon, X server constantly restarts after sys log daemon timeout
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 201673 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201673 Public bug reported: A few hours ago I upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy Alpha 6. Everything went fine, including reboots, until I applied a bunch of updates roughly have an hour ago. One of them failed during the post-processing step (can't remember its name unfortunately). Ever since that update the system hangs during startup when it is trying to start the system log daemon. After a timeout (of about 4 minutes) the system continues to boot and tries to bring up the display server. The display server then crashes repeatetly until a warning message appears that the display server has been shut down more than 6 times in 90 seconds. Switching to a terminal and logging in results in the following: malloc: ../bash/subst.c:3472: assertion botched free: called with unallocated block argument Aborting... After which I am presented with the login prompt again. Booting with the old Gutsy kernel does not help, neither does starting in recovery mode. [Bug 247910] [NEW] [users-admin] show UID below 1000
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools it would be nice with an option to show users with UIDs below 1000. I know there is an option to "show all users", but that is not ideal since it includes system accounts. Since mac os x starts their users at 501 I have a few ubuntu machines set up with with UIDs starting at 501 (since that is needed for the NFS mounts to work nicely). I'd still want the ubuntu users to be able to change their password, displayed name etc. Hence I'd like a gconf setting (or something smarter) were I define what UIDs should be displayed. Perhaps there is a better way to define "user accounts" vs system accounts? If there is a home dir then it is a user account?
