[Bug 356856] [NEW] gedit is not restored properly by x-session-manager

2009-04-07 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I am using Xubuntu desktop (gdm, x-session-manager, xfwm4, etc.).
Whenever I logout, I choose the option "Save session for future logins."
Most applications (e.g., Firefox, gnome-terminal, evince) are restored
properly when I login. However, more often than not, gedit is not
restored. The following happens:

1. After login, the gedit process is running, but no window is visible
anywhere.

2. If I try to launch gedit, the gedit process crashes with the
following messages:

** (gedit:5583): CRITICAL **: _gedit_app_get_window_in_viewport: assertion
`GEDIT_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed
** (gedit:5583): CRITICAL **: gedit_window_get_active_document: assertion
`GEDIT_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed
** (gedit:5583): CRITICAL **: gedit_window_create_tab: assertion
`GEDIT_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed

3. If I now launch gedit again, the editor starts as usual.

Sometimes gedit is restored properly by x-session-manager, the editor
window is visible and I can use it immediately.

In case it matters, the option "Launch Gnome services on startup" is
enabled (the default value) in Xfce Settings Manager.

Ubuntu 8.10, all packages up-to-date, gedit 2.24.2-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 189506] Re: Normal user can't access USB camera Error (-53: 'Could not claim the USB device')

2008-06-08 Thread Jukka Suomela
On my computer, gphoto2 used to work fine for normal users (as long as
they were members of the "plugdev" group). The previous time I tried it
was on 19 April 2008, with an up-to-date (k)ubuntu; it worked fine.

Nowadays, this is no longer the case. Presumably it broke down when I
upgraded to Kubunut 8.04. Symptoms:

- gphoto2 seems to work only if the same user account has a KDE session
running. (Likely it would be the same case for a Gnome session; I don't
have Gnome installed so I cannot tell.)

- If I log out from KDE and try to use gphoto2 from a text console, I
get the "operation not permitted" error mentioned in this bug report.

- If other users try to use gphoto2 (e.g., via ssh), they get the same
error, even if I have a KDE session running.

I have tried both an old Canon PowerShot A80 camera and a new Canon IXUS
80 IS; the same thing happens for both of them.

[Bug 60670] Re: kate silently corrupts iso-8859-1 files in utf-8 locale

2007-08-21 Thread Jukka Suomela
Some further comments regarding the behaviour of the latest version of
Kate (2.5.6) in Kubuntu.

As I have learned that Kate corrupts iso-8859-1 files in UTF-8 locale, I
have tried to make sure that Kate gets the encoding right by adding
"kate: encoding ..." directives in some files. However, this leads into
yet another trouble.

The following happens quite often; I am using a UTF-8 locale:

- I have an iso-8859-1 encoded file which is created somewhere else. The
file might be, for example, a Latex source code; it contains the
directive "% kate: encoding iso-8859-1" near the beginning of the file
and it also contains some non-ASCII characters encoded in iso-8859-1.

- I open the file in Kate (usually a Kate instance is already running; I
open files using "kate -u file.tex" from the command line).

- At this point I _should_ notice that the file is displayed using the
wrong encoding; non-ASCII characters are shown as squares. However, this
is very easy to miss if there are only few non-ASCII characters in the
file, especially if none of them are near the beginning of the file but
hidden somewhere in the middle of a long file.

- Therefore I simply start editing the file. I do changes here and there
and finally decide to save the changes. At this point Kate complains
that "the selected encoding cannot encode every Unicode character in the
file".

- Now I notice that all non-ASCII characters are indeed displayed as
squares. However, Tools / Encoding shows that iso-8859-1 is selected!

The trouble is that even though Tools / Encoding show iso-8859-1, Kate
did not properly read the file in this encoding. An now I am in trouble.
At this point I cannot reselect Tools / Encoding / iso-8859-1; Kate
would like to discard the changes and re-read the original file. And I
cannot even copy & paste the file into a new window and save it with the
correct encoding, because non-ASCII characters are garbage. I have to
re-open the file with the correct encoding and manually copy & paste
just those parts where I have done editing. Or something like that.

There is a workaround, but it is hard to remember that this must be done
every time:

- Check that non-ASCII characters (if any) are displayed correctly. If
not, re-select Tools / Encoding / iso-8859-1 immediately after opening
the file.

It seems that Kate remembers the correct setting for each file;
therefore if I do this once for a particular file (or if the file is
originally created with Kate on this computer), things work fine.

At the time I was experiencing the problems, the system was an
up-to-date Ubuntu edgy, and /sbin/init --version displayed the
following: init (upstart 0.2.7)

> Also, was that interface using DHCP or static addresses?

eth0 uses DHCP, eth1 uses static addresses.

I do not know if the bug has been fixed in the latest version of

[Bug 107796] Kate + DejaVu Sans no longer works

2007-04-19 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kate

After today's update to the new version of Kubuntu, I noticed that fonts
in Kate look bad (too light, fuzzy) and display is distorted (extra
whitespace, cursor is not placed exactly between the characters, etc.)

I was using DejaVu Sans fonts. It seems that there is a new font variant
"Light" in addition to "Normal" and "Bold", which might cause the
problems. Toggling bold on/off for each style fixed some of the problems
but not all of them: the fonts look normal but the display is still
somewhat distorted.

Switching to Bitstream Vera Sans helps. A poor workaround but at least
the editor is somewhat usable.

[Bug 91338] kghostview does not save the list of recent files on logout

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kghostview

the list of recent files (File / Open Recent) is properly updated.

However, if I do not quit KGhostView but simply log out from KDE, this
does not seem to be the case. On the next log in, KGhostView is started,
it shows the file that was open on log out, etc., but the list of recent

[Bug 84537] sysctl.conf, net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding, race condition?

2007-02-11 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: procps

/etc/sysctl.conf contains the following lines by default:

# Uncomment the next line to enable packet forwarding for IPv4
#net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding=1

In my system, uncommenting the line _usually_ does the trick: IPv4
forwarding is enabled on all network interfaces. Unfortunately, this was
not the case every time. Sometimes, once in 10 reboots or so, this did
not work. IPv4 forwarding was not enabled on some network interfaces.

I am not 100 % sure why this happens, but I think it might be caused if
sometimes a network interface gets initialised before sysctl sets the
above setting. Thus, I tried to define the following _two_ settings in
/etc/sysctl.conf:

net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding=1
net.ipv4.conf.all.forwarding=1

(I think the first setting tells what happens to the new interfaces that
are created after setting the sysctl, and the second setting tells what
happens to the interfaces that have already been created?)

Now everything has worked fine for months. Every time IPv4 forwarding
gets enabled properly.

I have two physical network interfaces, "eth0" and "eth1", both of which
use the "e100" driver.

[Bug 84530] pdftk man page is out-of-date

2007-02-11 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pdftk

pdftk man page is out-of-date, compare:

  man pdftk
  pdftk --help

Among others, the current version of pdftk makes it possible to rotate
pages in a pdf file. The man page does not mention it at all, but it is
documented in --help.

There is also a bug in "pdftk --help": it prints ISO-8859-1 text (note
the DEGREE SIGN characters, 0xB0) in UTF-8 locales.

[Bug 81815] OpenOffice.org "filter selection" dialog is confusing

2007-01-27 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Sometimes when I try to open a file, OpenOffice.org does not recognise
the file type automatically. It displays a "Filter Selection" dialog
box.

The dialog box displays dozens of different file formats, apparently in
no particular order. Just to give a sample of what is shown when I tried
to open a PowerPoint file from a web site:

OpenOffice.org 1.0 Text Document
PSD - Adobe PhotoShop
Web Page Query (OpenOffice.org Calc)
StarWriter 4.0
OpenOffice.org 1.0 Spreadsheet Template
OpenOffice.org 1.0 Spreadsheet
OpenOffice.org 1.0 Master Document
Lotus WordPro Document
...
[approx. 93 (!) lines omitted]
...
Text
Ichitaro 8/9/10/11 Template
CGM - Computer Graphics Metafile
StarChart 5.0
Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP [finally!]
...

At the very least, the entries should be in an alphabetic order.
Ideally, most frequently used ones would be shown first.

Oh, and even better, OpenOffice.org should have been able to guess the
file type. After all, the web server provided "Content-Type:
application/vnd.ms-powerpoint" and, furthermore, the last component of
the URL was "xxx.ppt". (I had clicked a link in Konqueror. As far as I
can see, in the default configuration Konqueror simply passes the URL to
OO.org and lets OO.org to do downloading. Thus, OO.org should have a
complete information on the file type.)

[Bug 77314] konversation shows "lt; " and "gt; " instead of "<" and ">" in the backlog

2007-01-03 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konversation

Steps to reproduce:

- Join an IRC channel.

- Send a public message "test < >"

- Leave the channel.

- Join the channel again.

- Konversation displays a backlog (by default 10 last lines from the log
file of the channel, in grey colour). Instead of " test < >", it
shows " test lt; gt;".

The contents of the log file are correct. The menu entry "Window" /
"Open log file" also shows the log file correctly. The bug seems to
affect only the backlog that is displayed when one joins a channel.

[Bug 61331] Re: [edgy] extremely bold ttf fonts in kubuntu (edgy)

2006-10-27 Thread Jukka Suomela
I confirm this problem. For me it happened with all DejaVu fonts.
Specifically, the font rendering engine did not seem to use hints; for
example, the vertical bars of the letters were no longer aligned with
screen pixels and the result was hard-to-read and blurry (and, in many
cases, the fonts looked bolder than usually). Worked fine in Kubuntu
6.06, broke when I updated (with apt-get) to Kubuntu 6.10.

Changing the hinting level in the KDE font settings from medium to full
indeed solves the problem. However, I would like to emphasise that the
medium level used to be the default setting; thus, I think a large
number of users have ~/.fonts.conf files with settings that used to work
but no longer work. I wonder if all of them can figure out how to fix
the problem.

The same thing happened in Debian earlier, see the following bug report
for more information:

[Bug 63127] The Finnish spell checker in OpenOffice.org does more harm than good

2006-09-30 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

The Finnish spell checker in OpenOffice.org systematically complains on
correctly spelt compounds _and_ suggests incorrect spellings.

Here are just some examples in a simple document; most compounds in the
text seem to be marked as incorrectly spelt. The text is correctly
marked as being in Finnish. In this list, the first one is the correct
spelling (flagged as incorrect by OpenOffice.org); the second one is the
wrong suggestion:

"allekirjoitus" -> "alle kirjoitus"
"opinnäytteet" -> "opin näytteet"
"opiskelijapalaute" -> "opiskelija palaute"
"työtehtävät" -> "työ tehtävät"
"työtehtävissä" -> "työ tehtävissä"
"työympäristö" -> "työ ympäristö"
"urakehitykselle" -> "ura kehitykselle"

Not knowing a word is natural; making incorrect suggestions is not. Yes,
I can easily imagine _why_ the spell checker makes such recommendations,
but it just does not work in the case of Finnish.

In these kinds of cases, not all native Finnish speakers know which one
is the correct spelling. I am worried if someone actually believes these
suggestions.

A simple fix would be to disable the Finnish spell checker in the
default installation, until it works well enough.

Platform: latest Kubuntu; I have used the Language Support tool to
install support for Finnish and English. All settings in OpenOffice.org
should be in their default values; I do not think I have done anything
to configure any spell checkers.

PS. Just for fun, had to test this one:

"Lappeenranta" -> "Lappeen ranta"

[Bug 61715] kmail: search tries to access nonexisting mailboxes

2006-09-21 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmail

The following Kmail bug that occurred in Debian also occurs in Kubuntu:

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=384863

For reference, I copy the original bug report here.

---

On my IMAP account, I have folders "INBOX.foo.bar" and "INBOX.foo.baz"
but I do not have a folder "INBOX.foo".

Mostly, kmail handles this properly. The folder browser tree shows
INBOX/foo in gray (while, e.g., INBOX/foo/bar is blue). The "subscribe"
option does not show any checkbox next to INBOX/foo. And so on.

However, the search function does not seem to handle this ok. Every time
I perform a recursive search ("INBOX" and all its subfolders), I get the
following error message:

"Error while searching.

Unable to open folder INBOX.foo. The server replied: Mailbox does not exist, or

[Bug 60689] "Reply" in kmail downloads attachments

2006-09-16 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmail

I use Kmail to read mail in an IMAP account.

If an email message has a large attachment (a PDF file, a zip archive or
such), Kmail seems to to download just the plain text part of the
message from the server when it shows the message preview.

However, when I reply to such a message, Kmail seems to download the
entire message, with all attachments; however, it does not seem to use
any part of that extra information when it composes a reply.

[Bug 60683] konversation silently discards some messages (irc channels with non-ascii characters)

2006-09-16 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

- Set the character encoding in Konversation to utf-8.

- Join an IRC channel with a non-ASCII character in its name, say,
"#testä" (the channel name is in utf-8).

- Using another IRC client, send a message which is not a valid utf-8
message (say, something with non-ASCII characters encoded latin-1) to
"#testä" (naturally the channel name has to be in utf-8).

- Konversation silently discards the message.

I would expect one of the following:

1) Konversation shows the message with the broken characters replaced by
some "invalid character marker".

2) Konversation guesses the correct encoding of the message and shows it
correctly. (It seems that this is what happens in the case of channels
with only ASCII characters in their names.)

3) Konversation show at least something; a warning in the status window
if nothing else.

[Bug 60681] konversation does not show what is actually sent

2006-09-16 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konversation

If Konversation is configured to use iso-8859-1 character set, and if I
enter a message with some characters outside this character set, the
following seems to happen:

- Konversation silently translates the non-iso-8859-1 characters to "?"
when it sends the message to the server.

- However, the chat window, the irc log, etc. show the original message.

Thus, one never knows what the other people actually see, especially if
some text is copy-pasted from somewhere else, and it contains characters
that look similar to normal iso-8859-1 characters.

I would expect one of the following:

1) Konversation does the translation and shows the result in the chat
window.

2) Konversation gives a warning, highlights the problems, and lets me
edit the message.

[Bug 60670] kate silently corrupts iso-8859-1 files in utf-8 locale

2006-09-15 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kate

If I open a binary file in kate, it gives a warning that saving the file
will corrupt it. Fine.

However, if I work in a utf-8 locale, open an iso-8859-1 encoded file in
kate, and save it, it will be corrupted. Each non-ASCII character (that
does not happen to form a valid utf-8 encoded character) is changed into
an "invalid character" marker. Simply opening and saving the file is
enough to lose all non-ASCII characters, and no warning is given.

Switching to the right encoding after opening the file naturally helps,
if only one remembers to do it. If the files are in English, there may
be only a few non-ASCII characters in the files, making them easy to
miss until it is too late.

[Bug 60669] multibib support in rubber is buggy

2006-09-15 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rubber

I have noticed the following problems in the "multibib" support in
rubber (Ubuntu package rubber, version 1.0-1; some of these problems
seem to be also present in the upstream version 1.1):

1) Write a Latex document foo.tex that uses multibib bibliographies.
Even if everything works fine, "rubber -Wall foo.tex" and "rubber-info
foo.tex" report a number of warnings, "Citation `xxx' undefined" for
each multibib citation xxx. However, the dvi, ps, pdf etc. are perfect.
Forcing a new run by "rubber -f -Wall foo.tex" fixes the problem.

2) Compile a document that uses multibib. Add "\newcites{x}{X}" in the
source. Rubber dies with "IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'x.aux'". Cleaning all generated files helps.

3a) Add "\newcites{x}{X}" but do not add any \citex, \bibliographyx or
such. Run "rubber -Wall foo.tex". It compiles foo.tex, tries to run
bibtex x, and stops. The bibtex process fails and rubber aborts;
however, no error message is printed to the user, not even with -Wall.
Running rubber again generates dvi, ps, pdf, and whatever was requested,
but all multibib bibliographies are missing. This is user's error, but
rubber could tell it, instead of failing silently.

3b) Use \bibliographyx{foo} such that foo.bib is missing. Similar result
as in the case 3a: bibtex fails, rubber aborts, but no error message is
printed.

4) Rubber does not understand the syntax \newcites{x,y}{X,Y}; one has to
write \newcites{x}{X}\newcites{y}{Y}. In the case of the former, rubber
tries to read a file called "x,y.aux".

5) The option "bibtex.path" is not used in multibib bibliographies.
Combined with 3b, the user experience is highly confusing.

[Bug 59264] Re: kate restored on the wrong virtual desktop

2006-09-07 Thread Jukka Suomela
I have not touched any settings that are related to sessions in KDE
(this is a new installation of Kubuntu). I do not know whether the
session is considered "continued" or "new".

When I logout and login, the session is automatically _mostly_ restored
to its previous state. I would expect that it should be _completely_
restored to its previous state.

The only visible problem is that kate is restored on the wrong virtual
desktop (not the virtual desktop where kate was running but the virtual
desktop that was visible on logout, I guess). All other applications are
restored on those virtual desktops where they were running on logout.

[Bug 59271] subversion-tools depends on exim4 | mail-transport-agent

2006-09-06 Thread Jukka Suomela
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: subversion-tools

"subversion-tools" depends on "exim4 | mail-transport-agent".

Sure, some of the hook scripts provided in the package do need a mail-
transport-agent. However, I would assume that if someone actually
started using those particular scripts, she would understand that she
needs an MTA. Or she would at least notice it very soon. This could also
be documented in, say, /usr/share/subversion/hook-scripts/README.

The package provides, among others, a useful program "svn_load_dirs".
However, to get this program (which, as far as I can see, does not use
an MTA), one has to install an MTA. This is a really heavy-weight
dependency for something that simple.

The default installation of Kubuntu does not seem to contain any MTA. I
am really happy with that (thanks to the team for great work!) and I
would really like to see that an MTA is not pulled in unless it is
absolutely necessary.
