[Bug 203973] Re: tf-tool manpage is misleading

2008-05-05 Thread Justin Dugger
There's a new README as of April 10th that states:

libpam-thinkfinger for Ubuntu
-

In order to enable authentication by fingerprint, you will need to
run the /usr/lib/libpam-thinkfinger/pam-thinkfinger-enable script.

In order to acquire new fingerprints for login users you need
tf-tool, which is included in the recommended thinkfinger-tools
package and is also used to verify fingerprints.

 -- Scott James Remnant <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Thu, 10 Apr 2008 16:49:04

That script should handle pam.conf for you. If it does not succeed,
please report a new bug!

[Bug 188787] Re: no wacom tablet driver (no autoprobe, patch available)

2008-04-22 Thread Justin Dugger
As I recall, KDE/Qt has a viciously hard time dealing with tablet
devices listed in Xorg but not physically present. Enough that several
developers have blamed tablet users for making it impossible to debug
KDE and calling the addition a move by idiots. Timo may be correct that
it also affects some usability tools.

Like I said before, what's needed to fix this is either a post-inst
script to modify xorg.conf or a patch to wacom tools to support
autoprobing / configuration. Re-adding the entries by default simply
breaks someone else's use case.

Wacom works for me, after pulling up an xorg.conf from gutsy / feisty.
Others are complaining in this bug that wacom isn't autodetected. This
is different than not working at all. Coz, is your bug that you can't
get wacom-tools to work at all?

[Bug 188787] Re: no wacom tablet driver

2008-04-13 Thread Justin Dugger
I can't be sure (how I hate CVS) but it looks like development release
7.9.9 added a patch for autoprobing two weeks ago. With a scant two
weeks to go until release, you'd have a hard time arguing that the risk
to breaking wacom to bring in auto detection patches can be mitigated.
If anyone's interested in hunting down the patches, here's a clue from
the upstream Changelog:

2008-03-30 Ping Cheng <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* Updated configure.in for keystrokes (Magnus Vigerlöf)
* Added touch support for serial TabletPC (ISDv4)
* Added autoprobe patch (Matthias Hopf @ Suse)

[Bug 188787] Re: no wacom tablet driver

2008-04-11 Thread Justin Dugger
As far as I know, X.org has never supported autoconfiguration of wacom.
We have had wacom by default on xorg.conf files, but never working X +
wacom without xorg.conf knowing about it. I think this change has been
a long time coming, as the default gutsy xorg.conf simply had the wacom
lines commented out. I believe the goal is to ship hardy without
xorg.conf by default. Obviously this is a large flaw.

What's really needed here is either wacom autodetection (and intelligent
defaults) or a script to modify to xorg.conf files. I suspect neither
one is trivial.

[Bug 208668] Re: sshd core dumps while trying to connect with a password

2008-04-07 Thread Justin Dugger
This is a known bug upstream, with a patch to fix it. upstream was going
to put up a final release to include these patches, but it hasn't
happened yet. Thinkfinger in hardy is provided from upstream SVN + some
extra patches not in SVN, but occasionally puts hald-input-addon (I
think) into an infinite loop.

Long story short, I don't anticipate fixing this. There are work
arounds, and Ubuntu has picked thinkfinger up into main for hardy, so I
won't be providing it any longer anyways.

[Bug 208668] Re: sshd core dumps while trying to connect with a password

2008-04-04 Thread Justin Dugger
Ah, thinkfinger doesn't ship in gutsy. I do provide it in a PPA, but
this should be fixed in hardy and in the long run thinkfinger will
migrate to fprint. Unfortunately, Launchpad PPAs have no bug reporting
facilities.

So on the one hand, this bug does exist, but on the other hand, Ubuntu
doesn't ship this configuration. This bug should probably be marked
invalid, unless sshd shouldn't be coredumping on broken pam modules.

[Bug 211237] [NEW] gdmsetup won't run without gdm running

2008-04-03 Thread Justin Dugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have a broken GDM today that runs 100% cpu and won't show a login.
Apparently this is related to the facebrowser. I'd like to turn it off
via the same GUI systems that I enabled it with. I'm able to log in to
the system and GNOME via startx, but when I run gdmsetup, I get an error
that GDM is not running and the program exits.

I don't know what problem this "is gdm running" check is intended to
solve, but it makes fixing this a PITA.

Lorenzo, your bug appears to be caused by a conflict between the package

2008-03-22 Thread Justin Dugger
The manpage for thinkfinger is misleading, but I'm afraid you're all
simply wrong. ldd `which tf-tool` clearly shows that it's linked
against pam.

To enroll a new user, you simply need to run "sudo tf-tool --acquire".
That will be enough in hardy to enroll a user. You do not need to copy
the file to /etc, you do not need to recompile with pam support. You
will need to modify pam.conf to use thinkfinger however. This is in the
documentation already.

Re: [Bug 187130] Re: [Hardy Feature Request] Add support for biometric fingerprint reader

2008-03-07 Thread Justin Dugger
I've been thinking about this package for a while (you may have come
across my somewhat neglected PPA thinkfinger package), and I'd like to
point out that upstream has effectively died. I think the wiki
statement that "upstream believes thinkfinger is complete" is
inaccurate. Perhaps "upstream thinks thinkfinger's design is terrible
and has decided to restart from nearly scratch with fprint". Last I
knew, there were bugs and quirks in the upstream version that made the
system unpleasant, and the Debian maintainer was against fixing quirks
caused by gksudo. I shall try Scott's packages and see how they fare.

[Bug 197545] [NEW] colorfilter missing colorblind simulations

2008-03-01 Thread Justin Dugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-fusion-plugins-main

Colorfilter is missing several of the filters from compiz git from
before hardy was branched. In particular, protanopia and deuteranopia
provide filters to provide normal sighted people insights to how a
colorblind person might percieve the screen. In other words, these
filters can help everyone test interfaces for colorblind suitability.
I've tested these filters and neither of them appear to affect compiz
stability.

2008-01-23 Thread Justin Dugger
I've narrowed down the bug to wacom device "erasor" with a bit of help
upstream. There's a suggested patch on their tracker which seems
harmless enough -- I don't know the callers to that function, but it's
clear that its possible to get a null pointer back and something should
be done there to avoid a segfault.

[Bug 132550] Re: could use Epiphany's feed-presence RSS icon

2007-11-23 Thread Justin Dugger
Is the goal here to improve the look of liferea, or to improve the quasi
freedom? Because I think the use of the icon here is acceptably free,
and the screenshot appears to have an inappropriate background on the
icon.

After talking with jdong on IRC, it appears that this is the normal failure
mode for a truncated mp4, and I confirmed that the files were much shorter than
expected.
It seems that downloading multiple videos simultaneously from Google Video can
cause Firefox to silently drop one of the downloads and call the file half a
complete download.

[Bug 54816] Re: Edgy should include 'bioapi' to support fingerprint readers

2007-11-14 Thread Justin Dugger
It's an interesting document. Unfortunately, I live in the US and we
have export controls on things I believe akin to the "many to one"
concept. I have no idea why this law enforcement related software would
be banned for export. Perhaps I shall write an inquiry to my
Congressmen. The paper is also a bit specific to Lenovo Thinkpad
designs in some areas. If you like this paper enough, I think you might
try running it past the Ubuntu Technical Council's agenda. If you do
that, please let me know and I'll make sure and observe. They've done
much work in Ubuntu, and if the Technical Council generally likes the
idea, the authors should be contacted about inclusion etc. At the very
least, the References section is handy.

As far as arguing what is secure and what isn't, when we talk about
security, one must think of risk in both the probability and cost
dimensions. The probability of a mismatch is low in the gym example.
The cost is even lower. With Ubuntu in contrast, the cost of a
compromised login isn't known. SSH and GPG keys could be compromised,
leading to rootkit'd machines, infected packages. possibly botnets.

[Bug 54816] Re: Edgy should include 'bioapi' to support fingerprint readers

2007-11-14 Thread Justin Dugger
It's unsafe for a few reasons:
1. As far as I know, PAM doesn't handle this, so you'd be
2. Fingerprints can't work with hashes. The fingerprint scans are noisy
enough that no two scans can be assumed identical. Instead auth systems
compare stored minutia to the current scan, and introduce a probabilistic
verification. The minutia is what's stored in the BIR, but nobody is sure what
the details contain.
3. Comparing a given print to all print records is dangerous. (It may also
slightly export controlled). If you have several prints recorded, an intruder
has ten chances to come up with a close match. More if he has an accomplice.
Its an increased risk per user registered, since as stated in 2, it's a
probabilistic match.

I wouldn't be surprised if collisions occur if you enroll 100 users.
Fortunately, most people appear to be pushing for a single enrollee use
case.

[Bug 54816] Re: Edgy should include 'bioapi' to support fingerprint readers

2007-11-14 Thread Justin Dugger
At the moment, there are serious barriers to adopting this software for Ubuntu,
but I'm working on fuzzing the edges. These problems are:
* Lacks translations
* Requires uinput readable by user
* Requires ACLs to make gnome-screensaver work
* Stores authentication data in a strange place
* Does not, and cannot, unlock gnome keyrings on login.
* Requires users to muck with udev rules, /etc/modules and /etc/pam.d/ files
* No GDM integration to detect user via fingerprint

Most importantly:
* Potentially conflicts with US Export Laws. I think the design is in the
clear, but I am also not a lawyer versed in export law.

Help is certainly welcome. If anyone has writes patches for any of
these, attach them here and submit upstream!

[Bug 153245] Tablet buttons are wierd

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hotkey-setup

Linux jldugger-laptop 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT
2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Toshiba Tecra M7 tablet buttons don't work right. The tablet itself has
several interesting buttons intended to aid in navigation and use.

There's a joypad style button with up down, left right, and 4 other
buttons:

* a cancel / rotate button
* a key (lock screen?) button
* a user button (logout, probably)
* a video out button

Currently these guys are mostly bound to numbers, but it'd be nice to
get these to at least trigger arrow keys etc. I'll attach a showkey log

[Bug 140890] Re: wminput should provide udev rule

2007-09-27 Thread Justin Dugger
After speaking with cjwatson on this, I think it may be simpler and
wiser to advise users to run wminput via sudo. Newer versions in
upstream have a better approach that alter related functionality
anyways.

[Bug 145055] Group descriptions missing

2007-09-25 Thread Justin Dugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

I'm looking for a description of the currently available groups to
determine whether to add a new group or use an existing one for a udev
rule in a package in universe (wminput). I can't find any and mpt
suggests they might not exist. Debian-policy mentions vaguely how
numbers and groups correspond, but nothing seems to list the currently
existing groups and what programs use them.

** Affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 91151] Re: gksu doesn't always pop up a dialog

2007-09-25 Thread Justin Dugger
Try running "sudo -K; gksudo -d echo Test" from a terminal. That might give
us a clue as to why it
nanosleep({0, 100}, was called.

If it hangs, try the same strace approach again, please.
