[Bug 665944] Re: System takes too long to activate wifi on resume
Confirming this still affects 12.04 with the same laptop. I didn't have my old hack script handy, so I put a new one in /etc/pm/sleep.d with a resume case, that did: (in bash): for a in {1..10}; do iwlist scan > /dev/null; sleep 1; done Yeah, this lame hack seems to work perfectly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665944 Title: System takes too long to activate wifi on resume To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/665944/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi, I tried adding an exit 0 to /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless, as well as disabling it a few other ways. [Bug 665944] Re: System takes too long to activate wifi on resume
I've attached various log files, annotated with blocks of ==. Hopefully this is enough? I didn't leave the laptop to sleep overnight, since this reproduces easily every time. I just disabled my special "iwlist scan" script. The most interesting logs look like syslog, daemon.log, and perhaps pm- suspend.log. [Bug 665944] [NEW] System takes too long to activate wifi on resume
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager Using Maverick on a Dell Mini 10v, Ubuntu takes much, much longer to activate wifi when resuming from sleep. With Lucid, after opening the lid, NM would start searching for wifi after a few seconds -- perhaps 2-3. It would quickly reconnect and the laptop would be usable. With Maverick, the system wakes up slightly slower (but not enough to matter). However, the wifi takes dramatically longer to reactivate -- about 30 seconds. During this time, the red network disabled icon is displayed. Once the icon switches to the pulsing wifi-connecting logo, the connection is re- enabled quickly. It's acting like NM didn't notice the system just woke up for 30 seconds, basically. This is very annoying on a laptop -- wifi connection performance is important, and worked well in Lucid. [Bug 493778] [NEW] Running a 3d app (eg. glxgears) crashes Linux with Radeon 9200
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg This machine ran Jaunty fine with Compiz 3d etc. When I updated to Karmic, compiz stopped working. It ran with software rendering. However, glxgears appeared to have hardware acceleration. Today I updated with the latest karmic updates and tried again -- it was now fully software rendering in all cases. So, just to give it a shot, I pulled out an old PCI rage card that was sitting unused in the computer (this was originally used for dual head, but Xorg started segfaulting when I enabled dual head sometime around Hardy or Intrepid). Now, when I run glxgears in Xorg, the screen goes dark and Linux crashes. It appears to hard-lock in X11, though behavior varies. Typically the screen goes black immediately and goes into DPMS sleep. One time the screen went black, but I was able to ssh in and saw X11 using 100% of CPU. When I killed X the machine crashed. Another time, X was frozen except the mouse would update once per second, and the machine crashed on killing X. All other attempts, Linux has crashed instantly as soon as I run "glxgears." Linux is completely crashed in these cases, and won't even respond to SysRq. [Bug 451514] [NEW] xorg on radeon r200 is extremely unstable in karmic
Public bug reported: I just installed karmic on a computer with a radeon 9200, and it's completely unusable with Compiz. Xorg will usually run long enough to log in, but it will then crash soon afterward on events like "open a window" etc. This machine was very stable with Compiz in Jaunty and Gutsy, so this is a severe regression. [Bug 162124] Re: Should be able to set power preferences systemwide, eg. sleep on lid closed on gdm login screen
Will gnome know what to do with this? The gnome-power-manager process runs as the current user, wheras we're claiming that this should be run as an OS function through eg. acpi-scripts. I guess they could edit the acpi script config in their little power management tool... This just sounds to me like it needs some guidance from Ubuntu first, since any fix is going to involve the gnome UI doing something with acpi scripts or something similar. [Bug 363861] [NEW] login screen uses tiny fonts
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm This is probably the same as one of the other gdm font bugs, but they didn't look quite the same. This is with the Jaunty RC, clean install. The fonts in the login screen are mostly microscopic -- too small to read. This applies to the actual text of the username you type in, as well the text in the options menu. However, the prompt asking you to type in the username / password is the right size, as is the "Options" text itself and the date at the bottom. I'm using a 1360x768 widescreen monitor (actually, a television). This happens with the normal ATI driver as well as the fglrx driver - no difference. Expected behavior: The username/password and the menu text should all be in the same font size as the prompt and date. This looks very bad after a new install. [Bug 238542] Re: Firefox crashes when dragging menu item
Attached is a GDB log session for Firefox after it freezes. It was marginally more difficult to get it to freeze while running firefox in GDB: I had to wiggle the mouse more. It may have taken 20 seconds. Sadly, this log session has little useful data in it since Firefox's libraries seem to have practically no symbols, but perhaps it's useful to somebody. For reference, if someone else wants to reproduce this, you need to run firefox in GDB from either the console or another computer, since this bug will freeze your X11 session, preventing you from, say, using GDB. In either case, you would do this: 1. Go to console/other computer and log into your debug computer. 2. export DISPLAY=:0 3. firefox -g 4. "run" 5. Go back to X11, if you were on the console 6. [Bug 155116] Re: Graphics glitches coming out of suspend with Radeon 9700
Sorry Lim, that is how it works. DRAM requires active refresh to maintain its contents. This is done for system memory in sleep state, but does not appear to happen for the video memory. Without active refresh, DRAM will degrade over a minute or so. This explains the behavior where the graphics state degrades over time while in sleep. The bug is that Xorg is not reinitializing graphics memory properly. I tried suspending a desktop computer with a Radeon X800, and the exact same bug happened. This isn't even laptop specific. I suspect it's a bug in Xorg. -- Graphics glitches coming out of suspend with Radeon 9700 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/155116 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 155116] Re: Graphics glitches coming out of suspend with Radeon 9700
This is kind of dumb, but I think the reason it seemed like the graphics glitches were gone with 8.10 is because the basic problem here is that video memory is not being refreshed during sleep. RAM state will generally degrade over time, reaching a random state after a minute or so (but not instantly). So of course, when I was regressing this bug, I slept the laptop for short periods of time, keeping the ram in a closer-to-correct state. It's pretty clear that video textures just have to be reloaded on resume. The graphics glitches are all compiz-related, and look like 3d texture corruption. -- Graphics glitches coming out of suspend with Radeon 9700 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/155116 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 267345] Re: Process spinning in kernel in do_exit()
I tried to reproduce this using the Ibex kernel, but wasn't able to after some brief testing. It looks like totem has been changed significantly too though (I installed Intrepid), so it's also possible that it's not crashing on exit any more and thus not exposing bugs. I tried raising some random SEGV signals on totem, but I didn't really expect that to work and indeed it didn't. [Bug 267345] [NEW] Process spinning in kernel in do_exit()
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic I've got a stuck totem process which is unkillable, apparently spinning in do_exit(). I just hit "q" to exit in the normal manner, and it's stuck, using 100% of CPU. The machine still responds to userspace (hence this bug report). The only thing particularly interesting here is that totem was playing a movie over NFS. This is a Compal CL56 laptop with a Pentium M processor (single core, no SMP). The only other thing of note is that totem seems to crash on exit most of the time in pulseaudio, in the pthreads code. Could this have to do with page faults in multithreaded apps during shutdown or something? I suspect I will be unable to reproduce this, but in the hope that it's useful, here are the stacks I gathered using sysrq: Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084345] totem D c08b05f0 0 27648 6513 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084348]c18de5c0 00200082 c1406b80 c08b05f0 c140a480 c012270b c04790e0 c047c480 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084354] c18de704 c140a480 c01213e2 c08b05c0 0001 c08b05c0 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084359]00200082 cd2ec4fc 7fff 0002 cd2ec500 c031b136 c18de704 c140a480 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084364] Call Trace: Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084370] [enqueue_entity+0x2b/0x60] enqueue_entity+0x2b/0x60 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084377] [enqueue_task+0x12/0x30] enqueue_task+0x12/0x30 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084386] [sbshc:schedule_timeout+0x76/0x2d0] schedule_timeout+0x76/0xd0 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084396] [rwsem_down_failed_common+0x69/0x180] rwsem_down_failed_common+0x69/0x180 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084404] [wait_for_common+0x79/0x130] wait_for_common+0x79/0x130 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084409] [] default_wake_function+0x0/0x10 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084418] [exit_mm+0xc6/0x100] exit_mm+0xc6/0x100 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084423] [do_exit+0x165/0x860] do_exit+0x165/0x860 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084431] [recalc_sigpending+0xb/0x40] recalc_sigpending+0xb/0x40 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084435] [dequeue_signal+0x6b/0x150] dequeue_signal+0x6b/0x150 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084442] [do_group_exit+0x26/0x80] do_group_exit+0x26/0x80 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084447] [get_signal_to_deliver+0x2b7/0x4a0] get_signal_to_deliver+0x2b7/0x4a0 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084459] [do_notify_resume+0x93/0x750] do_notify_resume+0x93/0x750 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084468] [enqueue_entity+0x2b/0x60] enqueue_entity+0x2b/0x60 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084479] [try_to_wake_up+0x4e/0x350] try_to_wake_up+0x4e/0x350 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084487] [call_rwsem_down_read_failed+0x7/0x10] call_rwsem_down_read_failed+0x7/0x10 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084494] [do_page_fault+0x13f/0x730] do_page_fault+0x13f/0x730 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084501] [do_page_fault+0x0/0x730] do_page_fault+0x0/0x730 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084505] [rwsem_wake+0x4d/0x110] rwsem_wake+0x4d/0x110 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084513] [do_page_fault+0x0/0x730] do_page_fault+0x0/0x730 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084518] [do_page_fault+0x0/0x730] do_page_fault+0x0/0x730 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084522] [work_notifysig+0x13/0x25] work_notifysig+0x13/0x25 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084531] [unix_stream_sendmsg+0x160/0x390] unix_stream_sendmsg+0x160/0x390 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084541] === Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084543] totem D c18debb0 0 27654 6513 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084546]c18df140 00200082 c1406b80 c18debb0 c140a480 c012270b c04790e0 c047c480 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084551] c18df284 c140a480 c01213e2 c18deb80 0001 c18deb80 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084557]00200082 cd2ec4fc 7fff 0002 cd2ec500 c031b136 df8adc20 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084562] Call Trace: Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084567] [enqueue_entity+0x2b/0x60] enqueue_entity+0x2b/0x60 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084574] [enqueue_task+0x12/0x30] enqueue_task+0x12/0x30 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084583] [sbshc:schedule_timeout+0x76/0x2d0] schedule_timeout+0x76/0xd0 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084593] [rwsem_down_failed_common+0x69/0x180] rwsem_down_failed_common+0x69/0x180 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084601] [wait_for_common+0x79/0x130] wait_for_common+0x79/0x130 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084607] [] default_wake_function+0x0/0x10 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.084615] [exit_mm+0xc6/0x100] exit_mm+0xc6/0x100 Sep 6 22:25:15 thyme kernel: [ 3537.08

[Bug 162124] Should be able to set power preferences systemwide, eg. sleep on lid closed on gdm login screen
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager Well, I suppose this isn't precisely a bug per se so much as poor design. When I go into gnome-power-manager, I can select "When laptop lid is closed: [suspend]" to make my laptop sleep when I close the lid, like I want it to. There are two problems here: 1. This only sets a per-user preference. If I were to log in as someone else and close the lid, nothing happens. 2. This doesn't affect anything outside of a gnome login session. For example, the gdm login screen or the console. Basically, the real problem here is that the design is surprising. Power management behavior like lid-close is something I expect to be tied to the hardware, and hence a global (admin) preference, instead of a gnome login preference. I'd normally like to set this behavior system-wide as an admin tool, and have my preferences work in all modes including login screens etc. Then as an option, I might like to allow users to override these settings while they're logged in and on the foreground. ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Should be able to set power preferences systemwide, eg. sleep on lid closed on gdm login screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162124 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 162120] Wifi doesn't work on Compal CL56 without crazy acerhk hack
Public bug reported: This is basically a hardware/bios autoconfig problem. So, I have this Compal CL56 laptop, and it has a standard Intel Centrino chipset, so the wifi is nicely supported by the ipw2200 driver. Unfortunately, like (I'm led to believe) a number of laptops, the BIOS has this totally psychotic feature that I can only conclude was invented by a crackheaded monkey: By default, when the machine boots up, the BIOS /software disables/ the wifi, and won't enable it again without some crazy BIOS hack. This is particularly insane, as the machine actually has a physical switch on the side to turn it off, if you actually wanted to disable it. Anyway, the result here is that to get wifi working in Ubuntu, you need to load the acerhk kernel module with the following options and poke a bit, like so (I found this by googling): modprobe acerhk usedritek=1 autowlan=1 force_series=290 echo 1 > /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled This basically sucks, since obviously any ordinary user is not going to know to do this. It would be really nice if: 1. The acerhk module could autodetect this BS, so just loading it is sufficient (without some crazy options). 2. Ubuntu auto-detects that it needs this module. 3. There was something to poke that LED bit. Either always, or perhaps some support in the network code to actually use this software-lockout (which might be nice on some laptop without a hardware switch, I suppose). I don't know what other laptops this idiocy is needed on, but I'd be happy to test out any patches to fix this. ** Affects: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Wifi doesn't work on Compal CL56 without crazy acerhk hack https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162120 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 155116] Graphics glitches coming out of suspend with Radeon 9700
Public bug reported: I'm seeing graphics glitches coming out of suspend with Gutsy on my Compal CL56. This has an "ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 Pro (M11-P), 4x AGP" 128MB in it. I had compiz on in Feisty on this same machine, and it seemed to pretty much work fine, though there may have been a small glitch now and then. The glitches look to me like they're probably corruption of texture buffers. For example, the last time I saw one, the popup window compiz shows when I flip between workspaces using the keyboard appeared to just be random noise. However, normal windows on the screen appeared ok. Workaround: If I switch to console with ctrl-alt-f1 and then switch back, the display is restored. Just at a guess, perhaps the X server needs to reload its textures into video memory during unsuspend, and isn't doing it right? [Bug 100087] hibernate failed on compal cl56, locked up keyboard completely
Public bug reported: Hibernate is very flaky in Feisty on my CL56. When I hibernated my computer (very few apps running), it failed to hibernate. Instead, I got the screen lock window back. However, the keyboard was completely dead to X. ctrl-alt-bs, ctrl-alt-f1 etc. all had no effect. The mouse pointer moved as expected, however. I tried sleeping the computer (this sometimes helps the extremely flaky gnome-screensaver), but it also failed to sleep. [Bug 99647] gnome-screensaver does not reliably allow login after suspend
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver Feisty Beta: gnome-screensaver doesn't seem to reliably give me a login prompt after sleep. I think the problem may be that it can't get input focus. Example: 1. suspend laptop. 2. resume. 3. move mouse around, hit keys, etc. Result: This often works and gives me a password box I can type in, but sometimes the screen is just black and won't respond to any input. To work around this problem, I have to break to the console (ctrl- alt-f1). Sometimes just returning to X11 without doing anything else will cause the screensaver unlock to work. I have a similar problem on Edgy on another machine, which has two monitors: Without a suspend, just locking the screen, gnome-screensaver often never allows me to log in again, and I'm forced to break to the console and kill it. I don't know if the similar problem is actually the same, but I thought I'd mention it as it might be easier to reproduce. Note that I have these two monitors configured as two screens (:0.0, :0.1) and not with xinerama. Problems with gnome-screensaver unlock are severe, since they cause the machine to appear completely locked up and dead. Most users would consider the machine crashed, and probably power-cycle it. [Bug 77120] Screen lock always says "timed out" after sleep
Public bug reported: When I put my laptop to sleep (or hibernate), the screen lock is always in the "timed out" state when I come back. I get the gnome screen lock window with the password prompt disabled stating "timed out," and have to wait for it to time out before I can hit a key and enter my password. The machine is very fast at coming out of suspend, so I don't think this is a timing issue. Though it's broken even if it's a timing issue. :-) The correct behavior is to show the prompt with the timer just starting (or with a long timer). Note that it would be confusing to show nothing, as some other operating systems do, since a black screen on a laptop looks pretty much like it's turned off. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Screen lock always says "timed out" after sleep https://launchpad.net/bugs/77120 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 31892] Re: Screensaver should lock screen BEFORE entering sleep.
An attacker with physical access can be prevented if the filesystems are encrypted. However, this requires that the runtime (eg. screen lock etc.) be secure. The encryption denies access if the machine is powered off, while the runtime security has to deny access well enough that powering off + reboot/hard disk pull is the only option. So, in summary, don't give up on security. -- Screensaver should lock screen BEFORE entering sleep. https://launchpad.net/bugs/31892 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 76021] Re: Should synchronize ntpdate after resuming from hibernate
So, it looks like the network interface code already attempts to do this. The problem is that ntpdate doesn't work if ntp-server is running, and ntp-server makes a very weak attempt to synchronize the clock - so we really need both. ntpdate to set the clock, and ntp- server to maintain it. To solve this problem, ntp-server should be stopped at suspend time, and restarted after the network is back up during resume. -- Should synchronize ntpdate after resuming from hibernate https://launchpad.net/bugs/76021 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Running xemacs21 (21.4.17-2ubuntu1), I'm unable to reliably cut and paste with the keyboard. This is driving me crazy. When I then yank it back (C-y), I get this error: Selection conversion error: "selection owner couldn't convert", CLIPBOARD, STRING I have to undo to get my selection back. If I undo, cut again, and paste a second time, it works. I think the basic problem here is that XEmacs isn't handling having windows open on two displays properly. I have two frames open - one on :0.0 and one on :0.1.
