[Bug 214787] Re: Intermittent monitor flicker after screen blanking in Hardy

2008-06-26 Thread K
Hi

Maybe you could try editing //etc/X11/xorg.conf

Find the device section and add a line about framebuffer compression.

Example (with my hw):

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express
Integrated Graphics Controller"
Boardname "intel"
Busid "PCI:0:2:0"
Driver "intel"
Screen 0
Option "FramebufferCompression" "false"
EndSection

[Bug 155142] Re: Noisy hard disk Gutsy (configuring grub is not enough)

2007-12-08 Thread K
Hi

Fr Ch, I seem to have managed to fix the problem by using Gutsy's 386
kernel. Still, this is not an ideal solution for me as I am now unable
to use both of my CPU cores.

The bug we're discussing here seems to be quite rare. I've looked around
a bit and I have found no reports of a similar problem. Despite that It
would be damn great if someone would fix it:)

[Bug 155142] Re: Noisy hard disk Gutsy (configuring grub is not enough)

2007-12-11 Thread K
Hi!

I installed linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic from packages.ubuntu.com and
did one 'test session' with it. The problem seemed to be still there.
The beeping was a bit different but it was present.

Just to be sure I'll do a few more test boots in the next few days and
if it turns out that I was wrong and the problem is actually gone I'll
be sure to write about it.

[Bug 155142] Re: Noisy hard disk Gutsy (configuring grub is not enough)

2008-02-13 Thread K
Hi!

Today I discovered something new. The combination which causes the
beeping is: enabled speedsteping + 2.6.22-14-generic kernel. If I
disable the speedsteping, generic kernel works fine.

2.6.22-14-386 kernel works fine and it doesn't seem to care whether
speedsteping is enabled or disabled. This is a bit odd though as Fr Ch
said that 386 kernel didn't help.

The only conclusion I can make about this bug is, that it has something
to do with CPU cores as I have a dual core and 386 uses only one of the
cores.

[Bug 135548] Re: [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression

2008-01-12 Thread K
I messed with /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf and now I don't suffer
from the bug. Basicly I did quite the same stuff as jurgis.pralgauskis
(few posts above)

My config:

#
# Should laptop mode tools perform auto-hibernation?
#
ENABLE_AUTO_HIBERNATION=1

#
# The hibernation command that is to be executed when auto-hibernation
# is triggered.
#
HIBERNATE_COMMAND=/usr/sbin/hibernate

#
# Auto-hibernation battery level threshold, in percentage of the battery's
# total capacity.
#
AUTO_HIBERNATION_BATTERY_CHARGE_PERCENT=2

#
# Enable this to auto-hibernate if the battery reports that its level is
# "critical".
#
AUTO_HIBERNATION_ON_CRITICAL_BATTERY_LEVEL=1

Gnome-power manager notifies me about the low power and critical status
of the battery so maybe it (and not laptop mode) starts the hibernation.
In that case the bug has probably been fixed...

[Bug 155142] Re: Noisy hard disk Gutsy (configuring grub is not enough)

2008-01-14 Thread K
Today I downloaded hardy kernel again. I am not sure if it's different
than the one which is on the hardy 2 alpha cd or not but it might be
since hardy 3 was released. Anyway... I've done some more tests and now
I'm 99.9% sure that there's a link between speedsteping and the beeping
sound. Does anyone have a theory about how these two might be related?
If we presume that hdd is the beeping component then it seems rather odd
that enabling or disabling speedsteping somehow affects that.

Otherwise this bug would not be too important, but as disabling
speedteping (which seems to be the only solution atm) strongly affects
the potential computing power it is rather disturbing. Of course the bug
is not critical, but I'd still like to know what on earth is causing
such behaviour.

[Bug 66812] Re: [regression-edgy] speedstep-centrino module fails to load

2006-12-20 Thread K
I am having the same problem when using THE GENERIC KERNEL. CPU is intel core2
duo T2300E. Loading the p4-clockmod module (by running sudo modprobe
p4-clockmod in terminal) didn't work for me: I got an error message similar to
the one which occurs when trying to load the speedstep module.
Currently the only solution for me is using the 686 kernel.

[Bug 85814] Re: frequency scaling / detection broken on this box

2007-08-17 Thread K
I'm using an Intel Core 2 Duo 2300 with Feisty and 2.6.20-16-generic
kernel and frequency scaling is (still) not working. In the past I
solved this problem by using an older 686 kernel but now I can't install
it. (some trouble with udev hook script).

Anyway, the problem is that speedstep-centrino or acpi-cpufreq can't be
loaded. The error message is something like. "No such device."

With the new Gutsy's kernel everything works, but as there are some
reasons why I can't install it, I'd be very interested in helping to
solve this issue.

Ps: If you want me to run a command with speedsteping enabled in BIOS,
please make some kind of note about that because at the moment
speedsteping is disabled to keep the CPU at its minimum frequency.

[Bug 152439] hdd is making strange noise

2007-10-13 Thread K
Public bug reported:

I am using Gutsy and I've noticed a strange problem:

When using the 2.6.22-14 kernel the hdd is making a strange high pitch
sound similar to some kind of beeping. I suspect that the head is
constantly moving even when the computer is idle and this can not be
good. When I boot up with 2.6.20-16-generic the problem is gone.

PS It's probably good to know that my hdd is FUJITSU MHW2080B and
hdparm -B is set to 255 by default which means that advanced power
management is off.

[Bug 67810] Re: bad hard disk noise on shutdown

2007-08-26 Thread K
Exactly. There are plenty of problems with Gutsy's kernel as I've heard
and so it's not wise to think that upgrading to it is a wonderful
solution and everyone who experience this bug should do that.

Yes, I know that there are patches one can apply to its system to make
the noise go away but:

1) There are quite a few users for whom the patches don't work for some reason
or who are just not capable of applying them.
2) Most of the patches don't lose the noise on hibernation/suspend.
3)As said in previous comments: there are many users who aren't even aware of
the problem so they can't fix it.

What exactly is the technical difficulty with this bug that prevents the
release of a proper patch?

[Bug 155142] Re: Noisy hard disk Gutsy (configuring grub is not enough)

2008-03-18 Thread K
Hi again!

You can mark it as fixed now I guess.

Today I found a solution to this "bug." It turns out that the high pitch sound
can be (and in my case it was) the result of CPU trying to save power.
The whole thing is described here:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_high_pitch_noises#Limit_ACPI_CPU_power_states

The solutions offered there didn't quite work for me, but then I found this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=480430
In this topic there's a post by 'yopnono' which says:

'Put this in the /etc/rc.local script, and reboot.
echo 2 > /sys/module/processor/parameters/max_cstate
Were the number is the state you like to use.'

Number 2 worked for me but as I understand you may solve the beeping
with a higher number too. It depends on your CPU.

2007-10-25 Thread K
Kamppeter, I'm not 100% sure how I managed to achieve this but you could
try the following:

1)Disable one of the screens from displayconfig-gtk (a.k.a screens and graphics)
2) Go to terminal and do sudo gnome-display-properties
3)Choose the desired resolution

Now when you boot up with the projector connected they should run on the
same resolution (If they both support the resolution).

As I said nothing in this guide is sure:) All I know is that I managed
to make my external monitor and laptop to run on 1024x768

[Bug 67810] Re: bad hard disk noise on shutdown

2007-10-31 Thread K
keatliang2005, I think that a slight click on shutdown is perfectly
normal. Still, the sound you are hearing may not be the usual shutdown
click but the bug. As far as I know you can pretty easily make sure if
you are suffering from the bug or not:

1)Go to terminal, press F11 (to achieve full screen view) and type:

2)sudo apt-get install smartmontools

3) sudo smartctl --device=ata --attributes /dev/sda (This command
presumes that your hdd is indeed known as sda)

4)Now look at the raw value of Power-Off_Retract_Count

5) Shut your system down by typing 'sudo shutdown -h now' (yes, 'now' is
needed in the command as it sets the time of the shutdown) Then wait
until the system shuts down and start it up again

6) Now repeat steps 3-4 and see if the number has grown. If it has,
there's definitely something wrong but if it hasn't everything is
probably fine with the parking.

Still, I have to say that I am definitely not an expert and so my
conclusions may be wrong. It would be nice if someone would confirm my
theory or state against it.

That's strange because as I said, for me 2.6.22-14-386 works just fine.

[Bug 155142] Re: Noisy hard disk Gutsy (configuring grub is not enough)

2007-12-24 Thread K
Hi!

I tested with alpha 2 live cd and the sound is still there.
I executed the commands you asked me to execute and am now including the
results as attachments.
NOTE the commands were executed while the computer was running on hardy alpha 2
live cd.

As for the sound itself, I have a very low quality recording of it. If you are
interested I can upload it.
It is reaaly just a high pitch beep. It is constant. I can not say exactly when
it starts but it is always there when i listen so I guess that in the early

Hi,

I may have a solution to this nasty problem
http://bordeaux.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=1044 and from there you should
go to http://bughost.org/ipw3945/
I've not been able to monitor the activity of my laptop's CPUs after
taking the steps which are described in the bugshot page, but it seems
to me that the fan does not work as hard anymore as it used to.
What you say about cold wheather is interesting. I am not sure, but it
seems to me that the fan stops spinning so much when acpi -t gives about
49-51 C

PS applying the firmware and daemon updates may cause that you have to
load the module and the daemon manually after resuming from suspend or
hibernate but as that can be done with two simple commands it should not
be much of a trouble.

[Bug 48395] Re: ipw3945 produces 99% cpu, making my laptop unusable

2006-11-03 Thread K
What i told about the fan stopping spinning, when temp reaches 49-51 C is
probably false at least in some cases.
When I turned on my laptop this morning I noticed that the fan worked very
often though temp was about 49 as usually. I suspended the machine and then
resumed hoping that it would fix the problem. After resuming I started to watch
acpi -t. At first temp was 39 C and the fan was calm. After some time acpi -t
gave about 49-50 C and the fan kept starting and stopping after about every 30
seconds or so. The problem is actually still present. Maybe a reboot would
help, but I can't try it at the moment.

Still, I'm quite sure that I've seen acpi -t giving 49-50 C and the fan
has been completely still.

Maybe the fan is not using the temperature readings to decide if it should
start or not?
I don't know what else could it be using, though...

[Bug 61011] Re: Unable to use speedstepping in Edgy

2006-11-23 Thread K
I am having problems with speedstepng too.

Ubuntu version: 6.10
CPU: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2300 @ 1.66GHz
sudo modprobe speedstep-centrino gives the following:
FATAL: Error inserting speedstep_centrino
(/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-centrino.ko):

What I'm saying is that speedsteping is not working though as far as I
know the CPU supports it.

Bug confirmed.

Sound stopped working after hibernation. Not back even after multiple

Kindly suggest what kind of more info will be helpful. Everyone here is
confused and have termed it as "mysterious" because they did nothing in
particular to get back or lose the sound system.

[Bug 41144] Re: Some modules are not automatically loaded after dist-upgrade from 5.10 to 6.06 beta

Hi

Fr Ch, I seem to have managed to fix the problem by using Gutsy's 386
kernel. Still, this is not an ideal solution for me as I am now unable

The bug we're discussing here seems to be quite rare. I've looked around

would be damn great if someone would fix it:)

[Bug 155142] Re: Noisy hard disk Gutsy (configuring grub is not enough)

#
ENABLE_AUTO_HIBERNATION=1

#
# The hibernation command that is to be executed when auto-hibernation
# is triggered.
#
HIBERNATE_COMMAND=/usr/sbin/hibernate

#
# Auto-hibernation battery level threshold, in percentage of the battery's
# total capacity.
#
AUTO_HIBERNATION_BATTERY_CHARGE_PERCENT=2

#
# Enable this to auto-hibernate if the battery reports that its level is
# "critical".
#
AUTO_HIBERNATION_ON_CRITICAL_BATTERY_LEVEL=1

I executed the commands you asked me to execute and am now including the

NOTE the commands were executed while the computer was running on hardy alpha 2

As for the sound itself, I have a very low quality recording of it. If you are
interested I can upload it.
It is reaaly just a high pitch beep. It is constant. I can not say exactly when
it starts but it is always there when i listen so I guess that in the early

[Bug 214787] Re: Intermittent monitor flicker after screen blanking in Hardy

2008-06-26 Thread K
Hi

Maybe you could try editing //etc/X11/xorg.conf

Find the device section and add a line about framebuffer compression.

Example (with my hw):

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express
Integrated Graphics Controller"
Boardname "intel"
Busid "PCI:0:2:0"
Driver "intel"
Screen 0
Option "FramebufferCompression" "false"
EndSection

[Bug 151647] Re: Cannot configure projector connected to laptop with Intel i915 (driver "i810") using displayconfig-gtk

2007-10-20 Thread K
I have the same problem with intel945 G (or something similar) graphics
chip. I have a laptop with 12.1 inch screen and an external 19 inch LCD
monitor. I can make them both work on the same resolution but I need
different ones.

[Bug 151647] Re: Cannot configure projector connected to laptop with Intel i915 (driver "i810") using displayconfig-gtk

Fr Ch, if you want to set the power management level the command has to
look like this:

sudo hdparm -B(value from 1 to 255) /dev/sda. I.e: sudo hdparm -B255
/dev/sda

What exactly is the technical difficulty with this bug that prevents the
release of a proper patch?

the problem did exist, but propper updates have been released and so you

I am having problems with speedstepng too.

Bug confirmed.

Sound stopped working after hibernation. Not back even after multiple

Kindly suggest what kind of more info will be helpful. Everyone here is
confused and have termed it as "mysterious" because they did nothing in
particular to get back or lose the sound system.

#
ENABLE_AUTO_HIBERNATION=1

#
# The hibernation command that is to be executed when auto-hibernation
# is triggered.
#
HIBERNATE_COMMAND=/usr/sbin/hibernate

#
# Auto-hibernation battery level threshold, in percentage of the battery's
# total capacity.
#
AUTO_HIBERNATION_BATTERY_CHARGE_PERCENT=2

#
# Enable this to auto-hibernate if the battery reports that its level is
# "critical".
#
AUTO_HIBERNATION_ON_CRITICAL_BATTERY_LEVEL=1

[Bug 214787] Re: Intermittent monitor flicker after screen blanking in Hardy

Hi

Maybe you could try editing //etc/X11/xorg.conf

Find the device section and add a line about framebuffer compression.

Example (with my hw):

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express
Integrated Graphics Controller"
Boardname "intel"
Busid "PCI:0:2:0"
Driver "intel"
Screen 0
Option "FramebufferCompression" "false"
EndSection

(same reason i guess) so if you need any information just ask.

Btw acpi -t gives 50-51 C that is too much right? Cpu is intel core 2

No they are not because lsmod didn't show them. I had to add the following
lines: 8139too
snd-intel8x0
uhci_hcd
ehci_hcd
usbcore
usb_storage
usbhid
vfat
to /etc/modules and then things started to work.

It seems that this is a rare bug and very few users face it, but it sure
as hell does exist and shouldn't be rejected.

Scott, you were probably right and everything works fine after deleting

the problem did exist, but propper updates have been released and so you

[Bug 372118] [NEW] CUPS does not work with Firefox, HTTPS bug (Hardy LTS)

2009-05-05 Thread K
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

CUPS forces the use of httpS connection to add a new printer. There is a
bug in CUPS-1.3.7 with httpS connection when connecting interface with
Firefox 3.

The official CUPS bug report is here :
http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2892

The bug is corrected in CUPS-1.3.9. This version is present on Ubuntu
Jaunty.

* Hardy/LTS will be supported for 5 years long.
* It is impossible to add a printer with Firefox 3 on LTS (do not want to push
users to use IE instead).
Is it possible to backport CUPS from Jaunty to LTS (Hardy) ?

[Bug 391111] [NEW] HARDY : samhain cannot start because init script doesn't create "/var/run/samhain/" directory

2009-06-23 Thread K
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu Hardy (actually on all Ubuntus) /var/run/ is purged at each boot.
Samhain uses "/var/run/samhain/samhain.pid", and if the directory
"/var/run/samhain/" does not exist, samhain doesn't start and outputs this in
logfile :
ERROR : [2009-06-23T15:14:24+0200] msg=,
userid=<0>, path=

After :
'mkdir /var/run/samhain'
Samhain starts successfully

[Bug 151647] Re: Cannot configure projector connected to laptop with Intel i915 (driver "i810") using displayconfig-gtk

2007-10-20 Thread K
I have the same problem with intel945 G (or something similar) graphics
chip. I have a laptop with 12.1 inch screen and an external 19 inch LCD
monitor. I can make them both work on the same resolution but I need
different ones.

[Bug 151647] Re: Cannot configure projector connected to laptop with Intel i915 (driver "i810") using displayconfig-gtk

[Bug 155142] Re: Noisy hard disk Gutsy (configuring grub is not enough)

2007-10-27 Thread K
Fr Ch, if you want to set the power management level the command has to
look like this:

sudo hdparm -B(value from 1 to 255) /dev/sda. I.e: sudo hdparm -B255
/dev/sda

Hi!

No it has not solved the problem for me. I just thought that maybe it is
a good thing to know for those who are working on this bug.
