[Bug 2037082] Re: UBSAN: array-index-out-of-bounds with kernel 6.5 on Mantic

2024-03-22 Thread Mark Kendall
I had this problem with Ubuntu 24.04 with VirtualBox 7.0.14-dfsg-4 on my
computer
Fixed it for now by installing Oracle test 7.0.15 test build
https://www.virtualbox.org/download/testcase/VirtualBox-7.0.15-162366-Linux_amd64.run
 from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds

[Bug 1888877] Re: ASIX AX88179 network device driver is not working properly

2021-11-05 Thread Kendall
Adding another log here, when attaching an Anker usb hub with
ax88179_178a. As can be seen at the end of the log, the link is
established and can function (i.e. ping, load web pages, etc.) despite
the two "Failed to read reg index" errors.

unity was limited functionality so didn't try for too long.

Any other suggestions?

[Bug 1935728] Re: [radeon] Mouse pointer randomly disappears - other mouse operations still work

2021-07-13 Thread Kendall Paix
Are there any tests I can do?

Tried a few different blue tooth mouses - same result.
Slowed the mouse speed, changed screen resolution - same result.
Can't find a pattern as to what triggers this - sometimes heavy usage, some
times very little.

I'm happy to run any diagnostics - if we can't resolve this I will have
to look at getting a different hardware but would like to keep using
this if we can resolve it.

[Bug 1935728] [NEW] Mouse pointer randomly dissappears - other mouse operations still work

2021-07-09 Thread Kendall Paix
Public bug reported:

The mouse pointer randomly dissappears (same behavior in ubuntu 20.04 LTE and
ubuntu 20.10).
When this occurs all other mouse operations still function
- left/right click
- scroll wheel
- mouse position still moves

Just the actual mouse pointer not visible.
Only way to resolve is to restart the machine.
Tried numerous ways to restart the mouse driver but nothing else successful

[Bug 1907509] [NEW] Screen Tearing Compiz Unity Nvidia Intel hybrid integrated

2020-12-09 Thread Hudson Kendall
Public bug reported:

I've tried several solutions to fix screen tearing in 16.04, but nothing
seems to work. Screen tearing is so bad that the display is fragmented
into 2-4 horizontal and diagonal sections during any scrolling event,
along with artifacts while updating the screen in any way, like videos,
new tabs, opening programs, moving windows, etc... This issue started
occurring after a re-installation of libunity-core-6.0-9 and compiz
packages. I attempted to remedy the situation by installing Nvidia
drivers, thinking they might help compared to nouveau, but no change.

[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-03-03 Thread Elliot Kendall
This is personally impacting my ability to use Chromium to run the F5
SSL VPN, which uses the f5-epi and f5-vpn schemes.

There needs to be a way for individual users to add to the whitelist.
Adding more schemes like "apt" is just making the issue less painful.

[Bug 1463120] Re: Failure to boot if fstab disk mounts fail

2018-01-24 Thread Hudson Kendall
This is a serious issue when there is no physical access to the machine.
I can confirm this issue on 16.04 happen after adding a new harddrive to
the fstab and subsequently reformatting the drive. At reboot, I have to
options to resolve the situation. All network requests are ignored,
because the boot sequence can not complete.

[Bug 1661121] [NEW] NOAA weather URL no longer valid

2017-02-01 Thread Elliot Kendall
Public bug reported:

The included perl script, GrabWeather, pulls its weather data from

per the message at that URL, that web service was disabled as of August

2015-10-27 Thread Mark Kendall
I spoke to early, the mythtv backend looked like it had started (it was visible
in a ps -Af) but it wasn't usable. I also had to do a 'sudo chown mythtv

contents
there was no logging and event after this there is minimal content that

[Bug 1486176] [NEW] fglrx-core (not installed): fglrx-core kernel module failed to build

2015-08-18 Thread kendall green
Public bug reported:

I tried to remove fglrx and rebuild xserver-xorg since fglrx results in
boot loop with kernel 26 on 15.04. I got into root prompt on recovery
mode and ran apt-get remove --purge fglxr* and xserver-xorg. I then
ran apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core, libgl1-mesa-glx:i386
and :amd64, libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 and :amd64 and xserver-xorg. I then ran
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and reboot

When 15.04 started up, I got this error message about fglrx-core not
installed which I expected since I removed it, however the mesa graphics
were not installed.

[Bug 1445843] Re: fglrx-updates-core 2:15.200-0ubuntu0.2: fglrx-updates-core kernel module failed to build [make.sh: make: not found]

2015-05-23 Thread kendall green
I cannot install fglrx 2:3a 15.200-0ubuntu0.3_amd64.deb on my 14.04 LTS
system. whether I use dpkg or apt-get install fglrx*, with aticonfig
--initial. it stops with installation error from the .deb package. When
I boot to that drive and log in, it goes into a boot loop. I can log in
on a terminal. I have tried twice to mv my .Xauthority to backup copies
assuming a new one would be created on boot up, but no avail.

If this is a known issue that can't easily be worked around why can't it be
detected pre upgrade and the upgrade stopped!

[Bug 1163565] [NEW] Middle-clicking a link triggers onpaste event

2013-04-02 Thread Elliot Kendall
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu release: 12.10

chromium-browser version: 25.0.1364.160-0ubuntu0.12.1

Expected: Consider this bit of HTML:

html
body onpaste=alert('Hi');
a href=http://google.com/;Google/a
/body
/html

Middle-clicking the link to Google should open the link in a new tab,
but not trigger the onpaste event.

Observed: Middle-clicking the link opens the link in a new tab, but does
trigger the onpaste event. The same is true on any page with a body
onpaste handler.

See also https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=22810,
which was fixed in 2009 and is not present in the
22.0.1229.94~r161065-0ubuntu1 package.

[Bug 539339] Re: Exporting to PDF doesn't display text on other computers

2013-02-27 Thread Evan Kendall
Hi Anthony,

This issue has been mentioned elsewhere. I'm hoping it gets resolved,
but another user suggested a workaround that I have been using
successfully for a long time.

Rather than use the built-in export to pdf feature, use the print to
pdf selection from the printer dialog (this is a common feature in many
distros, so it should work on yours).

Bob’s script depends on devscripts, libtool and automake.
on my 12.04 system it fails with No package 'libglade-2.0' found (I cannot
even install it, there is only a libglade2-0 package, which is already
installed)

But! there is a PPA now, from which I got packages that just worked. See

I'm also experiencing the same issue, though in my case `fsnotify_event`

[Bug 874588] Re: ld --as-needed breaks implicit rules in make

2011-10-17 Thread Elliot Kendall
I agree it does seem preferable to use LDLIBS or LOADLIBES for
libraries, but not necessarily incorrect to put them in LDFLAGS.

The GNU make manual defines LDFLAGS as Extra flags to give to compilers
when they are supposed to invoke the linker, which doesn't seem to
exclude something like -lz. It mentions LDLIBS and LOADLIBES, but
doesn't define them. Mecklenburg's Managing Projects with GNU make says
LDFLAGS holds options for linking such as -L flags, while LDLIBS and
LOADLIBES contain lists of libraries to link against, which is a
little clearer but still not great.

Would there be any harm in moving LDFLAGS in make's implicit rules?

And if it is strictly incorrect to put libraries in LDFLAGS, could make
generate a warning when they appear there? At the very least, it would
be nice to mention this in the manual.

[Bug 874588] [NEW] ld --as-needed breaks implicit rules in make

2011-10-14 Thread Elliot Kendall
Public bug reported:

The default use of --as-needed with ld in oneiric breaks some implicit
rules used by make. These rules invoke cc with command line in which
$(LDFLAGS) appears before the source file being compiled or object file
being linked, and that order is preserved when cc invokes ld. As a
result, ld thinks the libraries listed in LDFLAGS aren't needed and
doesn't link them.

For example, consider a C source file, example.c:

#include zlib.h
int main() {
  inflateInit(0);
}

and a Makefile:

LDFLAGS = -lz
example: example.o

Running make invokes make's implicit rule for linking a single object
file ($(CC) $(LDFLAGS) n.o $(LOADLIBES) $(LDLIBS)), and produces the
following output:

/tmp/ccovHoBb.o: In function `main':
example.c:(.text+0x14): undefined reference to `inflateInit_'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [example] Error 1

Behind the scenes, ld is being run as ld --as-needed ... -lz example.o
When ld processes libz, it doesn't know about any of the
references from example.o, so it doesn't include it.

This problem seems to have prevented at least one package (sawfish-
pager) from being included in oneiric because it would no longer
compile, and I worry that there may be others.

I'm not sure what the best solution would be. One possibility would be
patching make to change its implicit rules, but that could have serious
consequences elsewhere. At the very least, it would necessitate patching
other programs that run UNIX makefiles, such as remake and pmake.

[Bug 689480] Re: package dependencies broken or missing

2011-08-25 Thread Kendall Gifford
Also having this problem in lucid and would love a fix. I second
Stuart's comments: something like this existing (still) in an LTS
release (about 15 months old) where the fix (apparently) doesn't require
any actual code changes... well, I'll just say I'd love a fix. I'd do
the work too but I'm not familiar with contribution requirements for
debia^H^H^H^H^Hubuntu.

[Bug 828366] [NEW] Caps lock state of VM (Windows XP using KVM) gets reversed

2011-08-17 Thread Kendall Gifford
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.10 w/virt-viewer 0.2.1-1ubuntu2 (and virt-manager
0.8.4-7ubuntu1.1)

Using KVM, managed by libvirt using the virt-manager package, I created
a Windows XP installation on my local workstation. I use the virt-viewer
to interact with said virtual machine.

Every so often, when I open up virt-viewer to view my already-running
VM, I find that the VM thinks that Caps Lock is already on. It isn't. I
_never_ touch that key. In fact, it's been remapped so that Caps Lock is
just another Ctrl key for me (though this problem manifested itself both
before and after this mapping).

Normally, this would just be a minor annoyance since turning Caps Lock
_on_ makes the VM think it's off. However, I find the Caps Lock key
_very_ annoying and have changed my keyboard mapping (as I mentioned
above) so that it's just another Ctrl key. Now when this happens, I have
to press Shift every keypress in the VM to get lower-case characters
_or_ change my keyboard mapping to get Caps Lock back (and turn it on so
the VM thinks it's off).

This happens unpredictably but with great regularity. As such, I can't
tell you how to reproduce it _exactly_ except to create this
environment, start said VM and log into Windows (XP) all w/Caps Lock
_off_. Then, close virt-viewer and let the VM continue to run for some
time, keeping Caps Lock _off_ the whole time. Finally, after some period
of time, open virt-viewer to view the VM's screen (with Caps Lock
_still_ off). This problem will then present itself some percentage of
the time (~25% for me) by the fact that typing into any of the VM's
program windows behaves as if Caps Lock is _on_ (though it's still off).

Anyhow, now sure where the problem is (what upstream package) but I
searched for reports using Red Hat's system for the virt-manager (and
virt-viewer) packages and didn't find anything. I know it may also be in
the gtk-vnc widget used by virt-viewer or a problem in the underlying
libvirt and/or KVM/qemu. Either way, figured the appropriate thing is to
report it here first.

[Bug 798842] Re: logout user menu obscured by empathy (chat) menu

2011-07-14 Thread Kendall Gifford
Well, I can't seem to figure out how to reproduce this bug except that
it *seems* to generally just be the state of affairs in non-fresh
sessions. This is as opposed to fresh sessions which are ones started
by logging in just after I've rebooted or otherwise just powered up the
system. Generally, fresh sessions don't seem to exhibit the problem
while non-fresh sessions do about %25 of the time.

Now, while this bug is annoying, I understand that it's not the highest
priority (a HUP signal sent to gnome-panel seems to always fix it). For
anyone else who finds this annoying, however, here's my temporary work-
around:

user@host:~$ mkdir -p ~/bin
user@host:~$ cat EOF ~/bin/reset-panel
 #!/bin/sh
 ps -C gnome-panel -o pid h | xargs kill -HUP
 EOF
user@host:~$ chmod a+x ~/bin/reset-panel
user@host:~$ echo $PATH | tr : \\n | grep ~/bin
user@host:~$ reset-panel

This just creates a shell script in your own, personal bin directory
with one-liner shell script that sens the SIGHUP signal to the gnome-
panel process. The second-to-the-last line just verifies that your
personal bin directory is in your $PATH variable by printing it if it is
(and doing nothing otherwise). The last line just runs it. If it works,
any gnome-panels will briefly disappear (your screen will flash) and
it should immediately come back w/o this weird artifact.

[Bug 787207] Re: Intermittant X crash with ATI card, multiple X drivers

2011-06-15 Thread Elliot Kendall
I'm unhappy to say that this is not an ATI problem. I just switched
video cards to an NVIDIA and am still seeing the same crashes.

I'm working my way through the suggestions on the Obtaining Backtraces
for X Crashes page but have had no luck so far. Apport doesn't capture
anything, running X through gdb locks the machine hard, and setting
NoTrapSignals in xorg.conf causes the X crash to take the rest of the
system with it. I'm running X through startx now in an attempt to get a
core file, but I'm not sure what else I can do if that also fails.

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

Since upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04, X crashes occasionally, maybe 1-3
times per day. I have tried a variety of troubleshooting measures to
isolate the problem, but without success:

1. The crash occurs with the fglrx, ati/radeon, and fbdev drivers, so it
doesn't seem to be specific to a particular driver
2. The crash still occurs after downgrading to a 10.10 kernel, so it doesn't
seem to be specific to the new kernel
3. The crash occurs with the standard Xorg packages from 11.04, the packages
from ubuntu-x-swat, and the packages from xorg-edgers.

The crash only happens when I'm actively using the system - I never come
back to it to find it at the login screen.

My video card is:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV610 [Radeon HD
2400 XT]

Backtrace is as follows:

I'm in the exact same situation. I was going to write a less coherent

Just as an update I upgraded to latest NVidia drivers and flash has
become much less stable. Strace of the npviewer system showed a lots of
time outs with resource unavailable - just checked my dmesg and found
this:

[Bug 692848] Re: Regression between 2.6.32-27 and 2.6.32-26 xfsdump SGI_FS_BULKSTAT errno = 22

2011-02-23 Thread Bill Kendall
I see this has been reproduced on a small filesystem, but for future reference
xfs
has a utility called xfs_metadump that helps in these situations. It grabs just
the
metadata, so it results in a relatively small file, and the file can then be
exploded back
into a sparse image of the original filesystem.

# xfs_metadump /dev/sda1 sda1.meta
# xfs_mdrestore sda1.meta sda1.img
# mount -o loop sda1.img /mnt

Should alleviate some of the pain in having to reproduce the issue on a
new filesystem.

[Bug 692848] Re: Regression between 2.6.32-27 and 2.6.32-26 xfsdump SGI_FS_BULKSTAT errno = 22

2011-02-23 Thread Bill Kendall
For posterity, CVE-2010-2943 (http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-
bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2010-2943) only listed 3 patches despite the
initial patch being a series of 4 commits.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=624923 shows all 4 patches.
(Plus a QA patch and an additional patch to fix a regression. The Ubuntu
backport includes the regression fix). Patch 1/4 was missing from the
CVE bulletin and I assume that's why it was missing from the initial
backport.

[Bug 567696] Re: [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2011-02-07 Thread Kendall Gifford
Add me to the list: Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 64-bit
Dell Vostro 220 (Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 w/Intel Chipset MB)
- built-in Intel graphics adapter (disabled)
- installed GeForce 8400 GS (DVI and VGA output)
- using the nouveau driver w/nvidia card w/dual-headed display

When my system freezes, the mouse still moves fine (isn't slow) but
all mouse and keyboard input is ignored (including CTRL+ALT Backspace,
CTRL+ALT Fx, etc.). The display is frozen except that the mouse cursor
can be moved around.

I *DO NOT* have any of the NMI messages that others have reported in
any of my log files. Also, I've never suspended my system so there is no
correlation with others who seem to have this issue after a suspend.

My system will usually run for server hours at a time just fine but is
still guaranteed to have this issue eventually. The crash/freeze has
always happened while viewing/editing a company wiki page in Firefox
(probably just a statistical coincidence) and running a Window XP
virtual guest (using qemu-kvm and libvirt).

Here's the moment of freeze in my Xorg.0.log:

[Bug 574665] Re: kvm + virtio disk corrupts large volumes (1TB).

2010-09-07 Thread Kendall Gifford
Is there any chance this bug can still affect an ext4 filesystem on a
partition that is just slightly under 1TB? I originally experience this
bug and, to work around it, re-partitioned my 1.5 TB drive into two
partitions. Since then I've not experience any issues until today when I
got some corruption out of the blue. I'm wondering if it is possible
that the bug still exists with smaller filesystems but only much more
infrequenly.

I posted the full details of my story here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1570149

Either way, looking forward to the roll-out of 0.12.5 into lucid-
backports so that, if nothing else, I can (somewhat) eliminate the
kvm/virtio layer as the source of my problems.

hello,

thanks for your help in this matter.  i found, after doing a
fresh install, that i only needed to add a couple of lines of code to my
soundcard .conf file and now all is great.  again, thank you for your
help.

So if you have a different problem now, you need to provide an
additional alsa-info so we can see what's wrong now:

Your dmesg reveals something interesting:

[   16.609499] snd_rawmidi: disagrees about version of symbol snd_info_register
[   16.609512] snd_rawmidi: Unknown symbol snd_info_register

Can you paste the output of these two commands:

modinfo snd_rawmidi

modinfo snd

to see if there is some strange version of these modules conflicting
with something else?

This does not just apply to the Window Decorations plugin. There is a
bug between grabbing a window property - which works correctly, as in
the attachment - and the rule dialog. Error in retrieving the value from
the Edit Match dialog?

I have home DIRs on NFS although all my mail accounts are IMAP. My issue

[Bug 574507] Re: Mesa drivers getting munged on Lucid Upgrade

2010-05-10 Thread Jason Kendall
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: ubuntu-netbook-remix-default-settings

Upon updating to Lucid the Mesa drivers seem to be clobbered by fglrx
drivers on Intel Based video drivers.

  Initial (partial) report is here:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/netbook-launcher/+bug/570659

GLX related applications will segfault also causing netbook-launcher to
  loop

  ---

  Release: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

  ---

  My fix (from other report)

Since my S10-2 has Intel video card, and I noticed that it's trying to
use the NVIDIA drivers I started with this:

  http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9212078postcount=10

This allowed xorg to at least start using the Intel Drivers for GLX -
however, the applications still seg faulted when trying to run which
  lead me to this:

  http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5409267postcount=4

It turned out I did have two different libGL libraries:

  /usr/lib/mesa
  /usr/lib/fglrx

I removed /usr/lib/fglrx and modified /etc/ld.so.conf.d/GL.conf to point
to the mesa drivers, however they didn't seem to really contain all the
  extensions required.

After doing the above I found that fglrx package was still installed so:

  sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx

This still didn't work, so I reinstalled all the mesa drivers again:

  sudo apt-get install libglw1-mesa mesa-utils libglu1-mesa libgl1-mesa-
  glx libgl1-mesa-dri --reinstall

forcing all my drivers back to normal for mesa

And now I can login with regular remix and run glxgears etc.
