[Bug 109943]
As of v24.5, running on Ubuntu 13.10 (64bit) with Openbox, I no longer see gettimeofday calls in the strace output. TB is still polling like mad, but is at least efficiency polling. From an strace output like above, I now see: (11.6%) futex (27.4%) poll ( 4.0%) read (45.3%) recvfrom (11.7%) writev And no gettimeofday. So, from the reporter, who has unfortunately changed the desktop he uses (see comments 16, 17, and 18), I no longer see this. Meanwhile, we still need input from someone running Gnome and Unity, I think. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109943 Title: Thunderbird: high CPU usage from progress bars To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/thunderbird/+bug/109943/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1217687] [NEW] [mir] [multimonitor] mouse choppy, typing text in terminal slow
Public bug reported: Starting from a single laptop monitor, I plugged in external VGA monitor. The monitor was autodetected and turned on (nice!). I moved the external monitor to the left of the laptop monitor in Settings - Display, and the, after about 3 minutes of moving windows around between monitors, the mouse becomes extremely choppy and typing text into gnome- terminal has a 3+ second lag between typed character and showing at the prompt. Setup and exact steps to recreate: 0. 1280x800 resolution laptop display with Intel-only graphics (Core i5 M520 @2.4), w/ Wacom capabilities. 1. Using Saucy 64bit iso daily from 27-Aug-2013 08:14, netbooted via a PXE and NFSROOT, with toram boot option. 2. Installed Mir per instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mir/MultiMonitorTesting . Plug in VGA cord to external monitor # external monitor instantly engages, with correct 1280x1024 resolution. (Way to go!) 5. Move external monitor to left side of laptop display in the Settings-Display window. Click Apply. 6. Quantal test requested: - Sigh. Apologies that I missed the Quantal test request. I'll have to get back on that one. Upstream Kernel: - The most recent at the time, but I did not write it down. Judging by the dates at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/, that would be 3.4-rc7-precise. Upgrading Also: - I did not upgrade Alsa, as at the time I had no time. Clearly I forgot since then. (However, my question of Do you need more information wasn't answered, so I assumed what I had was fine.) Again, I'll have to get back. To respond to my own comment/question of this is just plain not a priority, it's _not_ a priority for me. [Bug 429844] Re: audio level between 0 and 20% not output
Preliminary Checks: The speakers are builtin to this laptop, and there is audible output when I play any sound file. (Issue is still that below 20% = no sound out of speakers). 1. Speakers *are* plugged in, switched on. 2. Speakers are *not* muted. (I hear sound.) Advanced troubleshooting 1 (mixers at the ALSA level): Using Alsamixer via the terminal. 1. Choosing the 'Master' volume bar, and using the up/down arrows, the volume correctly increases/decreases in decibel output. 2. The percentage changes in small increments (between 1 and 5). However, it will not settle on a value between 0 and 16. To elaborate, if in another shell, I use amixer to set the volume to 0%, alsamixer shows the Master volume bar as 0 and no sound comes from the speakrs. If I use amixer to set the volume to 1%, alsamixer shows the Master volume as 16, and there is an appropriate jump in speaker decibel output, which I'd estimate as 16% of the maximum decibel output: $ amixer set Master,0 0% --quiet # -- Alsamixer: Master = 0 $ amixer set Master,0 1% --quiet # -- Alsamixer: Master = 16 Do you need more information? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/429844 Title: audio level between 0 and 20% not output To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/429844/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 675591] [NEW] apport-bug scrolls slowly with large amounts of text
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apport When I want to inspect a bug report, I'll often expand one of the triangles to see what information apport wants to send to Launchpad. When it has collected a large amount of information, such as when it decides to include a very large log file, the apport window slows very slowly, and jittery in chunks. If I had to hazard a guess, it looks like the scrolling algorithm depends on the amount of the text in an exponential fashion, like O(n^2) or something. [Bug 670762] Re: Docky crashes when DBus connection refused [ECONNREFUSED]
Are you sure it's expected behavior? As an end-user, it smells an awful lot like a crash. The behavior is that Docky is /already/ started, and I am able to use it for anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes. Then, something interrupts communication with DBus, I gather temporarily, and that's enough to crash Docky. As an end-user, it smells an awful lot like a crash. Even if it is expected behavior, what the developer in me notices is the Unhandled Exception text from Mono. [Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations
sk8erbender: Thank you for the bug confirmation. However, Dylan McCall put it succinctly in comment #202: The source of this problem is really close to the heart of the panel's design. It allows user-defined positions for applets, and these are stored with absolute values (in pixels). No amount of fiddling will change that that is a very poor, inflexible design. Unless a dev corrects me, this bug will not be fixed. It will only go away when a replacement is enacted, or there is a complete redesign of the fundamental panel code architecture and assumptions. [Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations
Given the number of duplicates and people subscribed to this bug, I thought I'd offer a workaround that I recently discovered: Docky. As I currently see it, the gist of docky is to recreate, in open-source fashion, the OS X dock. On OS X I find the dock annoying, but since installing Docky, I rather enjoy it. I believe it only available if you're running Karmic or newer. For Lucid, it's already part of the repositories: $ sudo apt-get install docky If you're running Karmic, I direct you to the docky site, but it's basically 3 command line operations, not one: http://www.go-docky.com/ For myself, I've even gained some vertical space on my screen because I'm now able to remove the bottom panel, after enabling fade away in Docky. Thank you Matthew. I don't see any logo text on that page, but I see that the mockup images you've made appear to now include an Ubuntu logo in them. Good deal. May I suggest a couple things further? - How about a window icon? Such that when an update window is minimized to the bottom panel (taskbar?), it doesn't have the (what *I* consider to be ugly) brown box, but a clearly Ubuntu icon? - The title Software Updater is, I think, better text than Update Manager. [Bug 370621] Re: thumbnailer unnecessarily recreates thumbnails
Yes, it still exists. The test is easy: $ mkdir /tmp/some_new_dir $ sudo mount -t tmpfs -o size=1M ThumbnailTest /tmp/some_new_dir You can see what you've just done by using df. It will probably the last line of output. $ df -h Open up a folder with a large file, likely a movie or image. Note the thumbnail. Now make a symlink to the large file in the temporary mount and open the folder: $ ln -s /path/to/large/file /tmp/some_new_dir $ gnome-open /tmp/some_new_dir Note the couple second delay while the thumbnail gets regenerated despite the fact that it's the /same file/ (as evidenced by the symlink). Furthermore, for videos, the thumbnail likely won't have the same image as the original, again, /despite being the same file/. Finally, when you're done testing, you can simply umount the new temp folder to get rid of it: $ sudo umount /tmp/some_new_dir $ rmdir /tmp/some_new_dir -- thumbnailer unnecessarily recreates thumbnails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/370621 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

No. Well, it's not the same font as the Application menu, but it's not tinny anymore. Heh, I was fully prepared to be patient when I reported this wishlist item over a year ago. :-) I didn't know how to report this bug to Jamie Zawinksi (xscreensaver fella), so I ended up writing him an email. I imagine he gets hundreds of emails per day, and since I didn't get a response back I didn't know if it had been lost. Then I posted it here. I'm actually not sure if this is a screensaver issue, or a window manager issue, so I punted and just posted. In other words, does the screensaver need to even know that those events happened? I don't think so. Some other thoughts: if screen has been turned off (not just black or running a screensaver), then there's no need to turn the screen back on. I can confirm on Lucid. With both gnomescreensaver and and xscreensaver installed. I not sure where the problem lies, but judging as best I can with my rudimentary debugging skills, the attached dbus output would seem to imply that - totem (1.774) is sending an Inhibit signal, - the ScreenSaver (1.602) receives that request and then informs the SessionManager. - Meanwhile, the SessonManager turns around and responds false for a check of IsInhibited for some reason (return reply_serial=1926: boolean false). ** Attachment added: Totem dbus interaction. ** Summary changed: - Thunderbird: high CPU while sending email + Thunderbird: high CPU usage from progress bars ** Description changed: Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird When sending a simple and short email with Thunderbird via SMTP the CPU is used intensively. This seems not to be necessary. If the sending failed and an corresponding error message dialog appears, the CPU is still being used. When pressing ok to close the error dialog the CPU is - fine. Such behavior is especially annoying on a laptop where you can + fine. This suggests it might be related specifically to the progress + bar. Such behavior is especially annoying on a laptop where you can hear the CPU usage because of a starting fan. -- Thunderbird: high CPU usage from progress bars https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 568711] Re: resume from suspend does not work
Can repeat behavior on Dell Studio with Intel integrated graphics: 1. System suspends successfully. 2. System powers on and disk starts spinning. However, no backlight on laptop screen, and host is unreachable by ssh/ping. 3. Hard power off (push/hold power button) then back on I've attached full outputs of lshw, lsmod, lspci, lsb_release, uname -a, but the highlights: - Intel integrated graphics, apparently with i915 driver. - 2.6.32-21-generic, 64bit - Lucid Note: I also went through the both debugging guides at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume#Suspending https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend With nothing fruitful. It's definitely suspending, but not resuming properly, no kernel panic, just not usable ** Attachment added: output of lshw, lsmod, lspci, lsb_release, and uname -a http://launchpadlibrarian.net/46840610/StudioHW_and_Modules.txt -- resume from suspend does not work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568711 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Is there any word on a fix or workaround for this? [Bug 569649] [NEW] workspace switcher mouseover text incorrect
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel With a default Ubuntu Lucid RC install, all updates applied as of 24 Apr 2010, the workspace switcher mouseover text always reads: Current workspace: Workspace 1 Even if the current workspace is 2, 3, or 4, it always reads as Workspace 1 This is obviously a low priority bug, but I don't know how to mark it as such. [Bug 429844] Re: audio level between 0 and 20% not output
Actually, after next reboot, this trick did not work: it removed sound entirely. [Bug 429844] Re: audio level between 0 and 20% not output
Dan, would this be a bug I should report upstream? I would, but I don't actually know to which project to report. [Bug 429844] Re: audio level between 0 and 20% not output
And that is why Dan Chen is the sound guy . Modulo Launchpad not playing nice with those spaces in that URL, that ignore_dB=1 did the trick. The range below 20% on the volume bar is now usable and jives with the aural DB output from the speakers.
