[Bug 1767995] Re: Horizontal scroll doesn't honor Natural Scrolling preference

2018-08-18 Thread Kevin Smith
This affects me too. I noticed it as soon as I upgraded from 16.04 to
18.04.1.

It took me a while to find a workaround, so I'll document it here to
help others. I believe there are other possible ways around this, but
this one worked for me:

First, I ran synclient, to find the current scroll values. For me they were:
VertScrollDelta = -73
HorizScrollDelta= 73

As a test, I ran this command:
synclient HorizScrollDelta=-73

That fixed the problem, but only until the next reboot. To run this
every time I started up, I created a script named
FixNaturalHorizontalScroll which contained just that line, and I saved
that script in /usr/local/bin. I used this command to make it
executable:

sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/FixNaturalHorizontalScroll

Finally, I had to manually run gnome-session-properties in order to add
my new script as a startup script.

I would be happy to help debug this. It's going to be a pretty
frustrating introduction for new users coming from other systems. And it
took me a few hours to piece together that workaround.

[Bug 952368] [NEW] Evolution crashes (SIGSEGV) when I hit the Calendar button

2012-03-11 Thread Kevin Smith
Public bug reported:

Any time I try to view the calendar, evolution gets a segfault and
immediately exits. Looking at the stack trace (see below), and knowing
that daylight saving time started this morning, that seems like the
likely cause. I'm hoping that perhaps within 24 hours the problem will
correct itself. It is possible/likely that I have some calendar events
that are in other time zones, including one half-way around the world.

This is a very serious problem for me right now, because I cannot manage
my calendar at all.

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

[Bug 952374] [NEW] Cannot edit appointments from pop-up reminders in evolution

2012-03-11 Thread Kevin Smith
Public bug reported:

When an appointment reminder pops up, there is an Edit button. That used
to work fine, but I think around the time I updated to Ubuntu 11.10 it
stopped working. Hitting the Edit button has no effect at all.

It is frustrating having to switch to evolution and manually bring up
the calendar in order to edit the appointment.

[Bug 880703] Re: Accepting calendar invitations fails with Unable to send item to calendar 'calendar-name'. No such interface `org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.Calendar' on object at path /org/gnome/

2012-02-10 Thread Kevin Smith
I upgraded to 11.11 several weeks ago, and everything has been working
fine. My calendar is just a default calendar on this computer (that is,
not a google calendar as in the original report). Just yesterday it
started happening, and now I cannot add any calendar events, which is
going to be quite a problem. Creating a new calendar is not really a
viable workaround.

As was mentioned, after the first (do-nothing) click on accept, the
factory process is still running. After the error, that process is gone
and a new one has been created.

[Bug 706931] Re: repeated asking to verify a certificate. enough already, I already approved it!!

2011-05-25 Thread Kevin Smith
By accident, I discovered that clicking Continue without checking the
box still leaves the connection functional. It seems that the app is
remembering the setting in terms of connecting, and only forgetting in
terms of popping up the dialog.

The good news is that clicking Continue is far easier than clicking
the checkbox and then Continue. So this bug is less irritating now than
it was before I found this shortcut.

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty on Samsung NF310 has the same problem (brightness

to take any major risks right now.

[Bug 763687] [NEW] Broadcom driver install problems on 11.04 from USB on Lenovo netbook

2011-04-17 Thread Kevin Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: restricted-manager

This morning I booted our Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 using an 11.04 USB that I
made from a Beta1 ISO (storing data in a temporary area). It said there
were proprietary drivers available, and offered Broadcom. I chose it,
and it started to install. It got about 2/3 of the way (according to the
progress bar), and then stalled. I let it sit for several minutes, but
the USB activity light was not flashing so I gave up. The system was not
hung, so I choose to Reboot.

After rebooting, which included a long (~30 sec?) pause with no
activity, wireless was not available. The Drivers app said the Broadcom
driver was installed but not in use.

I did a full shutdown, and started up again. Again had a ~30 second
pause with no activity at one point, immediately after which the console
screen appeared (last entry is initializing CUPS), and then the boot
finished.

At this point, the wi-fi driver seems to be working fine.

lspci reports it as Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev
01)

I don't remember if I have tried any earlier versions of Ubuntu on this
netbook.

[Bug 628084] Re: linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic cannot find root filesystem

2010-09-08 Thread Kevin Smith
I seem to have the same issue cannot find root file system
I installed LinuxMint 9 KDE Live DVD onto my systems 20gb ATA hard drive
configured as a Slave Drive with an Optical Drive attached as Master. The
install went OK except the Optical drive was not available after booting to the
20gb hard drive after install.

I did a good search for read that some others had this issue and so they
changed their boot loader to from grub to lilo.

So, I decided to do a clean install and used lilo for the boot loader.

I booted to a USB with LinuxMint9 KDE i386 Live which and attempted to
install. Install fail at attempting a full format and install.

I attempted to do a manual configuration by deleting all the partitions
and creating just one primary partition of ext4 and flaged for boot.
This failed. Some error about corrupt superblock.

So I tried booting to the LinuxMint9 KDE i386 Live DVD and it stops at cannot
find root file system
Then I tried to boot and intall from Kubuntu 10.04.1 i386 and LinuxMint 9 xfce
i386 and again the same error.
I tried booting to Legocy 2010 Live CD and got similar issue of it could find
or load a sfs file all in bright red letters.

Next I tried cleaning up the hard drive with a windows 98 boot disc. I
ran fdisk and deleted all the partitions and ran fdisk /mbr a few times.
I created a FAT32 primary partition and set it to active and transfered
system files.

So I tried booting to the LinuxMint9 KDE i386 Live DVD and it stops at
cannot find root file system again. I proceded to try other Live linux
cds of : Kubuntu 10.04.1 i386 and LinuxMint 9 xfce i386 and again same
errors.

Finally I tried the Legocy 2010 Live CD and got it working. Once inside
the Legocy 2010 Live CD OS I launched the install and it requested I
manually format my hard drive with ext2 and also a 500mb swap. I then
used gparted that was included with this distro to resize my partition
leaving 512 mbs at the end open. I put an extended partition there and
then a logical partition into that and formated it as linux-swap. I
formated the primary as Ext2 and hoped that was right.

Then I ran the install and followed the prompts to put the Legocy 2010
distro on the 20GB hard drive.

[Bug 628084] Re: linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic cannot find root filesystem

2010-09-08 Thread Kevin Smith
OK, I am back. The install of Legocy 2010 did eventually fail also. I was
unable to configure the GRUB boot loader it provided.
On the reboot after installing Legocy 2010, GRUB comes up and prompts for
input. I press Enter and the it is unable to load the Shell.

I think it is time to relegate this old 20gb hard drive to windows 98 or
xp. Yup Microsoft os does not have problems with it. But the linux
seems to find something on the drive that makes it go crazy searching
for stuff that should have been ereased when, I, the user, yes me me me
me me, decided to erease it! ... and well obviously,... it is not realy
ereased, and I don't have a utility to realy erase it. Damn it... And I
was kind of liking the nice LinuxMint and Ubuntu, Kubuntu and stuff up
untill now. At least it was not on one of my nice SATA drives.

2010-04-05 Thread Kevin Smith
@Barry: No, that was total size, not free space. Subtract out however
much space five 6.10-era kernels would have consumed, along with
whatever other typical /boot files might take up.

2010-04-04 Thread Kevin Smith
@Barry: To clarify, when you talk about per kernel, you are talking
about per kernel that will be installed? As opposed to per kernel
already in /boot. I ask because at the time it failed for me, I may have
had 10 kernels stacked up in /boot. How many kernels get installed?

Maybe you could briefly outline what that calculation is doing so the
rest of us can understand it? Thanks.

[Bug 132311] Re: Improve Update Manager's /boot space requirement calculation

2010-04-04 Thread Kevin Smith
@Barry: Thanks for the details.

The bug bit me back in 2007 (upgrading to 7.04), so obviously the
details are pretty hazy by now. I mentioned in my bug report that I had
5 kernels in /boot at the time of failure. I just booted up that old
system, and df reports a size of 101086 total 1K blocks. Sorry I can't
give you more details about the state of things back then.

[Bug 132311] Re: update-manager should remove more old kernels

2010-03-25 Thread Kevin Smith
As the OP of Bug 120489 I heartily agree (as I said there) that this is
*NOT* a duplicate of that.

As I said over there, and as has been said here, the problem could occur
even if there is absolutely nothing in /boot other than one working
kernel and a minimum of other essential files.

I like what Barry said in comment #26, except that I see an even simpler
possible resolution. As he says, the installer must be able to detect a
lack of space. At that point, identifying cruft and/or launching a
janitor would be a nice touch. I would simply settle at this point for
an error saying /boot is full. Installation is being aborted. Please
retry after freeing up space on /boot. User friendly? No. Friendlier
than the current behavior? Yes, by 1%. And hopefully could be coded,
tested, and distributed quickly, with minimal dependencies and minimal
design discussions.

[Bug 504799] [NEW] Disable tap-to-click does not disable corner tap clicks

2010-01-08 Thread Kevin Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfree86-driver-synaptics

Running Ubuntu 9.10, xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.1.2-1ubuntu7, on a
Toshiba Portege R500-S5008X.

When I disable tap-to-click using System/Preferences/Mouse/Touchpad,
tapping in the bottom-right corner still simulates a right-click, which
is very disruptive as I am attempting to scroll up and down in a
document using edge scrolling. Disabling tap-to-click should disable all
taps.

Running synclient -l reports:
RTCornerButton  = 0
RBCornerButton  = 3
LTCornerButton  = 0
LBCornerButton  = 0

I reported it to gnome (
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=600128 ), but they suspect it
may be an upstream Ubuntu issue, which is why I am reporting it here.
They identified patch 103 as a suspect, although I am skeptical of that.

As I mentioned in the other bug report, I am working around the problem
by running synclient in a profile.d file.

[Bug 483898] [NEW] Audio file created by Export does not end at the correct point

2009-11-16 Thread Kevin Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: audacity

I am trying to trim down a larger audio file and export my sample. I
have carefully trimmed the audio from a large file (~45 minutes) down to
a small sample (~5 seconds). I am trimming by either splitting and
deleting or selecting and cutting. When I play the clip in Audacity, it
ends at the point I intend. However, when playing back the exported
file, there is extra audio at the end (perhaps 100-200ms). I did not
hear this audio when the clip was played in audacity. I have tried
exporting to multiple formats (mp3 and wav), but both have the extra
audio.

I am on Ubuntu 9.04.

[Bug 120489] Re: Upgrade failed because /boot ran out of disk space

2009-11-11 Thread Kevin Smith
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 132311 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132311

During a version upgrade, it is critical to check the space on /boot
before starting, because a failure will be catastrophic (as it was for
me). It is not enough to delete old kernel versions, because:

1. It is possible that /boot could be just slightly larger than the size of the
one current kernel, or
2. /boot could be huge but could be full of other non-kernel files.

So an auto remove will not really fix this issue. Therefore, as far as
I can tell, this bug should not be merged with 199086, There may be some
other bug out there that it is a duplicate of, but I haven't seen it
yet.

I have no idea if it should be marked triaged or confirmed. I just know
that it actually happened to me, as described, in 2007, and I'm trying
to avoid it happening to anyone else.

[Bug 426920] [NEW] Upgrading openjdk overrides existing alternatives javac setting

2009-09-09 Thread Kevin Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

When update-manager upgrades some package (I think is it openjdk), my
existing /etc/alternatives javac setting gets replaced with the default.
This means suddenly my system is running java apps using openjdk instead
of sun's java. It should respect and preserve the alternatives setting,
or at the very minimum, should warn me that it is changing this
important setting. This has hit me several times over the last year or
two.

Apologies if this is not actually an update-manager problem. I reported
it here since this is the app that is running when the problem happens.

[Bug 393728] [NEW] phpwiki does not install to a usable state

2009-06-29 Thread Kevin Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: phpwiki

I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and am trying to install phpwiki 1.3.14-3

I have tried configuring phpwiki to use both mysql and sqlite, but
neither seems to work. When trying mysql, I select mysql and all
other default options. However, mysql reports the following error:

mysql said: ERROR 1050 (42S01) at line 3: Table 'page' already exists

This appears to me that the table is already set up, so I ignore futher
errors, and the package reconfigure finishes. However, when I navigate
to http://localhost/phpwiki, I get a 404 error. Mysql and apache are
running.

I have also tried to configure with sqlite (already installed). I do
not get any errors during this process, but trying to go to
http://localhost/phpwiki still gets a 404.

In my opinion, when I have installed an Ubuntu package for a web
service, that service should be up and running. This is the way it is
for Apache, openssh-server, etc. I would just like a wiki to run on my
machine by installing the package and perhaps selecting a few options.

[Bug 357636] Re: crashes when accepting meeting invitation

2009-05-06 Thread Kevin Smith
I had a different case of evolution hanging which was also fixed by
upgrading to this jaunty-proposed version.

In my case, clicking on Calendar view would hang. It started two days
ago, and continued through yesterday and today. Quitting and restarting
evolution didn't help avoid the hang. Rebooting didn't avoid the hang.
This new version seems to have fixed it. Basically this meant I had no
access to my calendar at all, which was quite frustrating.

It is possible that the event that triggered the bug on my system was
receiving a meeting request that rescheduled an existing one-time
meeting. Not sure, though.

Anyway, thanks for making the patched version available and providing
easy instructions (and mechanisms) for me to try it without having to
wait for the official upgrade.

[Bug 295944] Re: 'unmount' fails for user mounted file system

2009-04-28 Thread Kevin Smith
This is not just for encrypted mounts. I have an hfsplus loopback mount
and cannot umount it. This worked fine in 8.04, but fails in 9.04.

Here is my /etc/fstab:

  /home/j2ee-hudson/Miradi/Miradi.dmg /mounts/Miradi/dmgfile hfsplus
rw,user,loop,noauto 0 0

Here is my mount command:

  mount -v /mounts/Miradi/dmgfile

Here is what ends up in /etc/mtab:

  /dev/loop0 /mounts/Miradi/dmgfile hfsplus
rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,user=kevins 0 0

And here is my attempt to unmount as non-root:

   umount -d /mounts/Miradi/dmgfile
umount: /mounts/Miradi/dmgfile mount disagrees with the fstab

I'm a software developer, and my automated builds are now failing
because of this. The workaround mentioned above (adding a /dev/loop0
line to fstab) does work, but also makes me quite nervous.

[Bug 120489] Re: Upgrade failed because /boot ran out of disk space

2008-07-03 Thread Kevin Smith
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 199086 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/199086

This bug is *NOT* quite a duplicate, as far as I can tell.

The other bug (199086) discusses methods of trimming the list of kernels
either because the list is too long, or because update-manager fails
during a normal kernel upgrade. This bug is because a VERSION UPGRADE
fails in the middle, and MAKES THE SYSTEM UNUSABLE and unrecoverable by
anyone without high technical skills.

Whether or not the kernel list is pruned, the version upgrade process
needs to avoid leaving the system in an unusable state. Which, as far as
I can tell, would mean checking /boot before the upgrade even starts.

[Bug 46200] Re: remove lighttpd

2007-06-16 Thread Kevin Smith
I'm running 7.04 Feisty Fawn and just had the same problem.

Tried to apt-get remove lighttpd, but the prerem script tries to stop
the service, and the service is not running, so the remove fails. Since
I have a different web service running already, it would be somewhat
difficult to get lighttpd started.

I had to follow the instructions at
http://www.urbanpuddle.com/articles/2007/05/05/fixing-lighttpd-update-
problem-on-ubuntu which are:

Go to /var/lib/dpkg/info directory and edit the lighttpd.prerm file.
What you want to do is comment out everything except the set -e.

Quite frustrating, especially for something that supposedly was fixed
earlier.

[Bug 120489] Upgrade failed because /boot ran out of disk space

2007-06-14 Thread Kevin Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I upgraded to 7.04 (Feisty Fawn), but the upgrade failed in the middle
because /boot filled up. I had about 5 kernels (I had diligently
upgraded when update-manager suggested, but had never thought to remove
old versions), and the folks who pre-installed Ubuntu on my laptop
created a very small /boot partition.

During the recovery, at one point it *did* say I couldn't continue
because /boot was full. It sure would have been nice if the upgrader had
checked that before I started the process. It took me a while to get the
system working again, and there is no way a non-technical user could
have recovered on their own.

Summary: Before upgrading, installer should check to make sure there is
enough space available on /boot

  sb_imapfilter gives this error:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cd /home/kevins/.spambayes/tavo;sb_imapfilter.py -c -t
File /usr/bin/sb_imapfilter.py, line 93
  from __future__ import generators
SyntaxError: from __future__ imports must occur at the beginning of the file
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.spambayes/tavo$

As a result, my spam filtering is completely broken and is doing nothing
  at all.

It looks like spambayes (sb_imapfilter) is not compatible with python
- 2.4, but python 2.4 has been installed as the default interpreter.
+ 2.5, but python 2.5 has been installed as the default interpreter.

I am going to try to work around it by manually editing the #! line to
- point to python 2.3 specifically.
+ point to python 2.4 specifically.
