I no longer own a computer running any Ubuntu, nor do I see that changing

Please remove me from the email list for this bug.

You obviously have a different version of something than I do. The website
still has all the errors listed in my error report i.e. steps 7-10, So
either tell me please how to get the same version you have or you must
revert to my version to see the errors.

Re: [Bug 147449] Re: Java add-on works less well on Firefox than MSIE.

2007-10-17 Thread Kirk Fraser
Now that I'm on Ubuntu 7.x (how do I tell if I'm on 7.04 or 7.10 with all
the automatic updates?) the bug is still present on the website listed. All
you have to do is enter a long string requiring word wrap. It does wrap but
leaves out a significant part of the text. You mention your Java Console
but like most Ubuntu folk do so while keeping the secret from ordinary users
of how to obtain that information for themselves.

So far the only advantage I see to Ubuntu is it's free and good for most but
not all (see this bug) webpage useage so it's a good modern terminal
program. It doesn't appear to be very good for development as its version
of Dos (the terminal) is so arcane that only the secret clan of developers
have a clue of what commands to use. WinE doesn't support enough stuff.
For example I tried installing a driver for a Netgear wireless device and
after several rounds where I learned to do undocumented stuff required to
complete online Ubuntu documentation for that device, it still doesn't work
as it can't find the hardware.

The help users should demand just isn't there. As noted, how can one even
tell what version is running? I've read something some time ago about
support for MS.net but where is it? It seems regarding this new version of
Java you have, the Synaptic Package Manager is just a restricted library
which doesn't allow specifying the latest release of a package so users must
guess how to do it in terminal mode and your version of DOS is not at all
intuitive so any guess is likely to be wrong. The so-called user group in
PDX at least will chat on stuff like passing out free copies of Ubuntu but
for real help good luck.

In addition to changing the navigation, the chat room is virtually unused
currently so you wouldn't see any chat scroll up wrongly. Shoulda responded
sooner! Maybe you can find another website where it fails.

BTW, please pass on my annoyance at the "crappity sap" Ubuntu names.

[Bug 147449] Java add-on works less well on Firefox than MSIE.

2007-09-30 Thread Kirk Fraser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Step 1: Address http://americansolutions.com
Step 2: Click on button at bottom right: .Skip to americansolutions.com
Step 3: On right of map click Chat button "more".
Step 4: Enter a random user name such as "test".
Step 5: Optionally open the expand button to get a new window.
Step 6: Wait until chat fills the screen.
Step 7: Observe word wrap doesn't work properly so long entries are cut off.
Step 8: Observe no scroll up or scroll down icon on side of chat window.
Step 9: Observe when chat window is full, no new chat appears in window.
Step 10: Observe occasional overwrites on screen.

None of steps 7-10 exist on MS IE.

Turning off updates in 7 so I get no updates until 8 seems like an
appropriate balance between the risk of being damaged by a security
violation and the risk of being damaged by a security update. If you think
otherwise, quantify.

Again, I think the risk of not updating between Ubuntu 7 and Ubuntu 8 is not
significant. Therefore, perhaps you should quantify the risk if you are
going to continue claiming it is "major." How many hours can U 7 be
expected to run bug free with and without updates? I think that should be
the deciding factor for the general population of users, even though I
understand developers must constantly update for a variety of reasons.

Re: [Bug 125283] Re: No "No Updates" Choice

2007-07-23 Thread Kirk Fraser
John,

> What exactly do you mean Suse has this feature?

I was at a Christian Game Developer's Conference in Portland last week and
saw one fellow who was running Suse on his laptop. I mentioned this thread
regarding Ubuntu updates. He said Suse is almost exactly the same as Ubuntu
and it allowed him to disable updates. He didn't show me how it was done,
so I assume it was part of the Suse setup.

That is exactly what I mean as I have zero personal experience with Suse. I
also have no idea what you mean by "repos" -- for me the term is associated
with collection agencies. In my opinion there should be a way to separate
ones' system from being part of the Ubuntu developer's testbed. I would be
happy to live with the original install of Ubuntu 7 until Ubuntu 8 is
released.

I moved from Ubuntu 6 to Ubuntu 7 when 6 was getting too buggy although I'm
not sure if the loss of features was due to updates or a virus. U7 has
acquired one bug I noticed due to updates. I simply want a guarantee of no
new bugs due to updates. Stopping updates is a guarantee. On the other
hand, the "expense" of feature loss vs. the "expense" of so much email
discussion about it is leading me to an "I don't care anymore" position on
the issue.

I haven't previously tried listening to other radio stations so I
don't have a definite before and after experience on Ubuntu with any
other. The example provided KEX works on Windows but quit working
on Ubuntu.

Here's one that does work on Ubuntu.
http://asx.abacast.com/blazers-kxl2-32.asx

Therefore it may be an update to the KEX stream as easily as a UBUNTU
update.

[Bug 125283] No "No Updates" Choice

2007-07-11 Thread Kirk Fraser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

The problem with frequent updates in BOTH Ubuntu and Windows is the
programmers fail to do a complete test suite on all compatible software
so they introduce glitches that are not present in the standard release.
There should be a button where the user can select "no updates" for most
updates and only allow the major releases like a Win Service Pack 2 or
equivalent through as an update where the update writers have done
adequate homework.

Perhaps there should be a 3 choice box where the user can choose "no
updates ever", "all updates as available", and "major updates only".

In addition, although Window's update rollback feature has at times been
brittle, I see no update rollback feature at all in Ubuntu or Firefox.
If that were available., I would try to remove the bug in my last bug
report that way.

Ubuntu 6 is a security risk -- I could detect a virus by its effects on
Firefox and my gmail service. Ubuntu 7 is much better but how can I
have confidence it won't get worse with the current update as it did
with its newfound inability to play a commercial radio stream from
1190KEX.com as previously reported?

Maybe you guys should get a little more free of the Microsoft model and
start sending users a description of the update showing exactly what was
fixed and why along with the source snippets to inspect and approve or
disapprove if they want before downloading it.

2007-06-14 Thread Kirk Fraser
"epiphany galeon konqueror" doesn't exist in Ubuntu's Synaptic Package
Manager. Thus it is not available or supported in Ubuntu. Now if you
could get them to free up the package manager to allow user input of new
packages like that, it would be great.

The problem appears to be a difference between the Ubuntu 6.06 where the
video playback slider works and 7.04 where it doesn't. I don't know how you
guys decide which piece of software needs a fix -- Ubuntu to regain lost
function or FireFox to support the Ubuntu system change. Should I report
the bug to Ubuntu also?

[Bug 117667] Time slider isn't working on Blender tutorial videos

2007-05-29 Thread Kirk Fraser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

The Blender.org video tutorials were working well under Ubuntu 6.06 but
now under 7.04 the time slider fails. Even though the new video driver
add-in process was much much much better in 7.04, there is still no
direct link to it that I can find to try the second set of drivers. But
I happened to see a list in Help under Multimedia Codecs and installed
ffmpeg seperately but to no avail on this problem.

I'm hopeful other problems with Ubuntu's syntaxic package manager have
disappeared such as only offering obsolete software packages that don't
work with other packages preventing the operation of various Sourceforge
projects.

** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
