[Bug 279102] Re: Unreliable network connection with B44 driver

2008-12-21 Thread Kris Simpson
I can confirm the same problems using the same Broadcom BCM4401-B0
controller. I have recently installed Intrepid fresh, and attempted the
workaround of disabling compiz. In all cases, I still experience the
intermittent connection drops while under heavy network load. I'm
currently using the most recent released kernel 2.6.27-9.19 and an
nvidia graphics card GeForce FX 5200.

[Bug 273196] Re: xterm does not want to update window

2008-10-04 Thread Kris Marsh
I can confirm this, it's been around since alpha1 or alpha2 at least.
Ctrl-L / refresh/ reset also works to fix it.

Compiz is turned off, so that's presumably not the cause.

It happens after every couple of commands, and happens every time I'm in
an xterm.

[Bug 267419] Re: [hardy] Cannot use question mark (?) in URL link/shortcut

2008-09-07 Thread Kris Marsh
Hi, This is not a duplicate.

The problem in bug #233913 does not seem to exist on my machine.
Additionally, the 'custom launcher' is a different application to the
'Create Launcher' on the desktop.

If you can confirm that the following reproducible steps above result in
the correct outcome in Ibex then that would be great. Otherwise, this is
still a bug.

Thanks!

2008-05-12 Thread Kris
I know this isn't exactly helpful, but I still have not had any freeze
problems with my ThinkPad T40 (Mobility 9000) running Fedora 8. Like I
said before, the only difference I can find between this and my freeze-
prone workstation running Ubuntu 8.04 (ATI X600) is the Compiz version
(0.6.2 in Fedora 8 versus 0.7.4 in Ubuntu 8.04). I haven't looked into
what it would take to roll back Compiz on the workstation, but it might
be helpful in isolating the problem. Has anyone else had a chance to
look at rolling back Compiz?

Scroll down to the Screen section and add the following lines:

Change 1024 768 to your resolution.
In my case the lines were already present, but for some reason it said 1600 1200

[Bug 195051] Re: X freezes in drmCommandWrite() when Compiz is enabled on ATI Radeon Mobility 9600

2008-04-25 Thread Kris
I started comparing packages on my Hardy workstation (ATI X600, randomly
freezing) and my Fedora 8 ThinkPad (Mobility 9000, no freezing), and the
only difference I could find was in Compiz. The Hardy machine is
running Compiz 0.7.4 and the ThinkPad 0.6.2. Both are using the 6.8.0-1
-ati drivers. I didn't have a chance to attempt to roll back the Compiz
packages on the Hardy machine and won't have another chance until at
least Monday. I also have no idea how many dependency problems will pop
up in trying to do so. If anyone is bored over the weekend and has a
current Hardy install, it might be worth trying to roll back to Compiz
0.6.2 to see if the latest 0.7.4 version is the culprit for the freeze.
I still haven't seen a freeze on the Fedora 8 ThinkPad and it's been
almost a month of 8+ hour daily use with Compiz enabled. And the most
obvious difference is in the Compiz packages.

[Bug 195051] Re: X freezes in drmCommandWrite() when Compiz is enabled on ATI Radeon Mobility 9600

2008-04-23 Thread Kris
I know this isn't exactly helpful in resolving this bug, but I tried
running `etracer` on my ThinkPad (a 9000, not a 9600) on this Fedora 8
install and it functions perfectly. I still wonder if this is not, in
fact, an issue with the -ati driver (Fedora uses the same version
6.8.0-1). Unless, of course, either Fedora or Debian has made some
change to the driver code. Seems doubtful. When I get into the office
tomorrow, I'll compare the versions of Compiz, Xorg, -ati drivers, etc.,
between this Fedora machine and my workstation which is running Hardy
current with an X600 and which is still exhibiting the freeze.

[Bug 195051] Re: X freezes in drmCommandWrite() when Compiz is enabled on ATI Radeon Mobility 9600

2008-04-22 Thread Kris
After posting my success with Fedora 8 on the freedesktop lists (linked
above), I did discover a similar bug on Red Hat's bugzilla indicating
problems with the 6.6.3-1 ati driver. It's an older bug, and I have
still been unable to duplicate the problem with the newer 6.8.0-1
drivers. It makes me wonder if it may be a problem with another
package, something that may differ in Fedora 8, but may be common to
Ubuntu 7.10, 8.04, Debian unstable, and Arch (and possibly more?). It's
also entirely possible that I've just been lucky for the last three
weeks. I don't currently have time to check for package version
differences between Fedora and the others, but I will keep running this
install to see if the freeze shows up. I do still have a Hardy
workstation with an ATI X600 exhibiting the freeze, so when I have a bit
of free time I'll start checking versions of Xorg and Compiz related
packages on both the Hardy and the Fedora machines.

[Bug 206845] Re: X server freezes (except for mouse) with Compiz enabled on ATI Radeon Mobility 9000

2008-04-21 Thread Kris
I'm starting to think that this might not be a bug in xserver-xorg-
video-ati after all. I've been running a test install of Fedora 8
(which also uses the 6.8.0-1 ati driver) for three weeks on the same
hardware, and I have yet to see the freeze.

[Bug 206845] [NEW] X server freezes (except for mouse) with Compiz enabled on ATI Radeon Mobility 9000

2008-03-25 Thread Kris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Following the lead of Nick Bauermeister and at the suggestion of Bryce
Harrington here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/195051/comments/29
I'm starting a bug report specific to my ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 problems.

The basics: I'm running Hardy, the latest updates as of the time of
writing this (2008/03/25), on an IBM ThinkPad T40 with an ATI Radeon
Mobility 9000.

Like other reports, X freezes with nothing working except for the mouse
cursor. I can only break the freeze via SysRq REISUB (or waiting, more
on that in a minute).

Unlike other reports, I was able to reproduce the freeze by starting
Gnome Screensaver Preferences and switching to the Braid screensaver.
What's strange is that this freeze doesn't trigger the gdb--I have to
interrupt with Ctrl+C to run a backtrace. I've also discovered that
this freeze will fix itself after some time (anywhere from 5 minutes to
an hour in my testing). I managed to get a gdb run that consists of two
SIGPIPE broken pipes during login, a SIGPIPE running the actual Braid
screensaver, and multiple SIGINT Ctrl+C interrupts during the suspicious
freeze with mouse still working. I ran backtrace full each time gdb
stopped, either on its own or from my interrupt. The last four or five
backtraces are probably the ones of interest, all stemming from the
Braid screensaver, subsequent freeze, and (after a long wait) recovery.

Note: Unlike Nick Bauermeister's bug report at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+bug/195051 I'm not seeing an error in drmCommandWrite()

Hope this helps.

[Bug 195051] Re: X freezes in drmCommandWrite() when Compiz is enabled on ATI Radeon Mobility 9600

2008-03-25 Thread Kris
Just a heads-up: I filed a similar bug (at Bryce's suggestion) at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+bug/206845

I'm running a similar setup (ThinkPad with ATI Radeon Mobility 9000),
but I'm getting some different output in the backtrace. I've also
discovered that the freeze with mouse activity can be reproduced on my
system by switching to the Braid screensaver in Gnome Screensaver
Preferences. Nick, could you give it a try?

When I switch to Braid, everything but the mouse locks up. Strangely,
the system will recover if I choose a different screensaver (even though
the system appears unresponsive to clicks). This freeze will persist
anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour and then POOF, the system is again
responsive with the new screensaver selected. I should also warn that I
get broken pipe if I select random screensaver and Braid happens to
come up (that's how I stumbled across the problem with Braid in the
first place).

Anyway, all the backtraces I managed to collect during the freeze
ended with problems in Dispatch() in dix/dispatch.c and dix/main.c. No
problems with drmCommandWrite() here.

2008-03-21 Thread Kris
I'm glad to hear that you're having better luck with the proprietary ATI
drivers, but this doesn't constitute a bug fix. The problem is know to
exist specifically in the free xserver-xorg-video-ati driver. Like
Nicolas mentioned, it would probably be helpful to post feedback on the
freedesktop.org bugzilla:

I forgot to mention that this occurred when printing to a samba shared
printer on a Window XP machine. I'd assume the same behaviour is
exhibited when using a local printer given the ability to print using
the KDE printing subsystem with Opera or Konqueror. It doesn't seem to
be a bug in CUPS.

[Bug 194660] [NEW] gnome-print-dialog crashes on long html page

2008-03-07 Thread Kris
Public bug reported:

Trying to print this page:

http://www.fortran-2000.com/ArnaudRecipes/CompilerTricks.html

in either Firefox or Epiphany causes the print dialog to crash, taking
the calling application with it. I was able to print successfully using
either Opera or Konqueror with the KDE print dialog, leading me to
believe that the problem lies in Gnome's printer dialog. I to catch the
offending process using top and ps when opening the page in Firefox,
choosing File Print... and then keeping the print dialog open.
Unfortunately, the system froze while working in the terminal. I was
able to ssh into the machine and acquire dmesg, syslog, ps axf and lspci
-vnn. I tried going to `init 3`, but nothing happened so I rebooted.
Apart from the freeze, the print dialog crash is reproducible by
attempting to print the aforementioned web page.

This is on an IBM ThinkPad running Hardy, all updates installed as of
2008-02-22. Let me know if you need more info.

[Bug 195051] Re: X freezes when Compiz is enabled on ATI Radeon Mobility

2008-03-07 Thread Kris
We may end up just blacklisting all people using a laptop with
the 'ati' driver since other bugs I read after this one show that
people are still having problems.

This is frightening. I can't imagine any situation (unless you're
Apple) where a valid fix would be to blacklist hardware that is
otherwise completely supported and functional.

As Arngren said, I'd be glad to help with any tracing that is necessary
to find a fix. I can't stand to think that blacklisting
hardware/software combinations is a valid bug fix.

I can confirm that this is still a problem on Hardy (unless the

[Bug 197036] [NEW] Search Settings - Update Settings fails when search filter is blank

2008-02-29 Thread Kris Marsh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: torrentflux

You can reproduce this by browsing to:

/admin.php?op=searchSettings

Or via the admin menu: Admin-Search Settings

Changing the search engine to one that has no filters (e.g. isoHunt),
and then clicking Update Settings.

---

With the default install, there are some search engines with no search
filters. When trying to save the page in this instance, it fails:

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in
/usr/share/torrentflux/www/settingsfunctions.php on line 158

The problem exists because settingsfunction.php::saveSettings($settings)
does not check $settings==null before trying to iterate through it.
Patch attached to resolve the problem.

I've also checked the source for the Hardy package and the same error
exists. Patch should apply cleanly on both.

[Bug 156471] mythbuntu control centre does not ask CD when installing propriatory codec

2007-10-23 Thread Kris Gupta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythbuntu-control-centre

Mythbuntu 7.10 LiveCD install.

Bug: Perform a fresh install and take the LIveCD out of the drive. If
you then try to add the proprietary codec, MCC will start the install,
but then just closes out without error messages or installation of the
drivers.

Solution: Place the original LiveCD into the drive, start MCC and
install the codecs.

Suggestion: Have MCC report that it needs the CD prior to the
installation.

[Bug 95948] Sound Juicer output format GUI bug

2007-03-25 Thread Kris Schoorl
Public bug reported:

500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com feisty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

A dialog in Sound Juicer that is on front of the screen does not have focus.
This is counter-intuitive and annoying.

Steps to reproduce:
0. Start Sound Juicer
1. Select Edit | Preferences
2. Select Edit Profiles...
3. Choose a random profile and click ' Edit '
4. Now, the dialog that pops up is dead, you can't do anything with it until
you close the ' Edit GNOME audio profiles ' dialog.

Also, there is a MP3 audio profile that does not work (it does not
appear in the list of output formats, even if you have the correct
gstreamer-lame package installed). In the Help file there are the
correct steps to create MP3 files, however having a MP3-audio-profile
suggests that that one works :-)

Re: [Bug 25830] Re: Option to display file in browser, treat as text/plain

2007-02-20 Thread Kris Nuttycombe
I think that this is exactly contrary to the intent of the request - instead
of attempting to pre-define a set of extensions, simply give me an open as
plain text option in the right-click dropdown for a link. Basically, trust
the user to know what is text, and allow them to view it as text with as
little hassle as possible. If an unknown filetype is encountered, have open
as text as another option in addition to opening with a third-party program
or downloading the file.

Re: [Bug 25830] Re: Option to display file in browser, treat as text/plain

2007-02-17 Thread Kris Nuttycombe
This does not work for any file type not recognized as text. For example,
Java source code (.java), LaTeX files, (.tex), etc. For a programmer, it's
intensely frustrating to have to take the time to download the source and
open it in a text editor when looking at it in the browser would be
preferable.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 57153 ***

Public bug reported:

We updated all of our computer desktops this morning, all 6 of them on 6 very

I am not sure of the exact name of the update, yet I believe it was:

We have all of the package repositories.

After the update the xserver failed to detect any screens/video devices.
After 2 hours tring to fix the problem without success all computers
have had to be reinstalled. It must be the code, I just can't see the
problem. Unfortunatly I do not have a fix for you, I just wanted to let
people know that this is a very big problem. I don't want everyone to
