[Bug 1799946] Re: OpenJFX-11 does not work with OpenJDK-8

2020-05-15 Thread Kristian Rink
Personally, I have given up on that and moved to using sdkman
(https://sdkman.io) for handling Java variants, this so far seems the
best / most reliable way to get different Java versions (including 8.x
series) to work on recent Linux distributions. Java packaging in Debian-
based distributions always has been weird, and JavaFX and the changes
related to the way it's supposed to be distributed don't make things
easier here.

It should possibly "just" be consistent. JavaFX *always* depends upon a
particular JDK. Either make different versions of openjfx available for
different openjdks (if there are different openjdk packages), or add
*just* one openjdk and one openjfx package where it's easy to, say,
downgrade openjd from 11 to 8 and be sure the installed openjfx package
will either have a broken dependency or be downgraded as well. Current
approach to handle this seems pretty much worst of both worlds. :|

Hmmm, ok, I am unsure how Oracle and OpenJDK/JFX relate to each other,
and whether the Open* variants will continue to see any community
updates. The whole post-Java8-world still is a difficult thing to
handle.

2019-05-06 Thread Kristian Rink
Yes, but the suggested approach ("Would it be possible to supply an
openjfx-8 package, similar to the openjdk-{8,11}-{jdk,jre}?") would both
fix this problem and make versioning of the openjdk- and openjfx-
packages (which, despite being separate packages, are pretty closely
tied to each other) immensely more concise. ;)

[Bug 1799946] Re: OpenJFX-11 does not work with OpenJDK-8

2019-05-03 Thread Kristian Rink
Stumbled into this problem here as well both with a couple of internal
Java applications and some FLOSS apps such as mediathekview
(https://mediathekview.de/) in Germany.

Currently, Java 11 -> Java 8 downgrade or even installing both in
parallel on any Ubuntu/Debian system works well, however for that to
work with JavaFX applications it would be required to also be able to
install different versions of openjfx - such as openjfx-11 for
openjdk-11 and openjfx-8 for openjdk-8. Right now, the only working
solution using the package repository is manually downgrading and
pinning openjfx libs, which unfortunately also will prevent any option
to provide updates to the openjfx-8 versions if ever needed.

[Bug 557890] Re: transfer lockup connecting to a NetApp/CIFS share

2013-08-13 Thread Kristian Rink
I am unsure what to do with this one. Haven't tested and can't reproduce
this as we don't run this device anymore. Right now, using a "plain"
NetApp FAS-2020, OnTap 7.4 and a 3.8.0 kernel off Ubuntu 13.04, this is
no longer a problem. As far as I am concerned, this one could be closed.

[Bug 989609] Re: package cyrus-common-2.4 2.4.12-2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 75

2013-04-05 Thread Kristian Rink
Added myself to the list as I ended up with similar things. None of the
workarounds worked, nevertheless. My system, however, is a bit older,
already used to go through a migration step-wise from 6.06 across some
intermediates to 10.04 (there's an enormously large mail spool on that
drive so so far I hesitated to reinstall this one). db_dump / db_load
failed complaining that the 4.7 files aren't compatible with a 5.1
environment (which seems berkelydb I guess); using db4.7_dump ends
complaining that the data may be corrupted being moved without cleaning
LSNs (whatever that means, I'm not a berkelydb expert).

Ultimately, after playing with this for a while, I decided to restore
the 10.04 VMWare snapshot and try again later...

Public bug reported:

Starting someday around mid March 2013, GTK+ 3.0 based applications
started looking ugly on Xubuntu 13.04 applications with "stock" Xubuntu

(evince, gthumb, lightdm-gtk-greeter) with GreyDay and Grey/BlueBird

[Bug 773524] Re: [Toshiba Tecra R850] SD card reader doesn't work

2012-01-03 Thread Kristian Rink
Seeing something akin to this on a Toshiba Tecra M11, installed 11.10
yesterday. Kernel seems to be up to date:

Linux node428 3.0.0-14-generic-pae #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 21 22:07:10

Device seems a bit different though:

01:00.1 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd Memory Stick Host Controller (rev 01)
01:00.2 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd Device e852 (rev 01)

Adding to this, it seems the device supports ejecting the card via
software control, and as far as I have seen now, I got the card to
remain loaded only once, seeing this in dmesg...

[Bug 557890] [NEW] transfer lockup connecting to a NetApp/CIFS share

2010-04-08 Thread Kristian Rink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Mounting a CIFS share off an IBM N3300 filer (== NetApp FAS 2020), I
experienced some file managers, applications, ... to more or less
regularly lock up / don't do anything while trying to browse folders.
Looking more into this, it seems the problem is more basic. The thing is
mounted using cifs:

Looking at dmesg, these errors do appear more or less frequently when

debian#570122 indeed seems to be the cause here too, with the exception
that in the first thunar window opened, only the top-level (window)
menus are German. As far as the context menus are concerned, locales are
ignored in the first window instance as well. And, the "first instance"
of course only works while invoking thunar using commandline or in
example from Xubuntus "places" menu. While opening "Home" using the
desktop icon, locales are ignored immediately - desktop icons are "first
thunar instance" then? Strange, on desktop icons however, context menus
do use the "right" locale...

[Bug 557255] [NEW] lucid: localization (de_DE) missing?

2010-04-07 Thread Kristian Rink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunar

Running an up-to-date lucid installation, I experience thunar displaying
English menu and dialog texts despite having my locale / language
environment explicitely set to de...@utf8 (German chosen during gdm
login). Installed all language-pack-*-de packages I managed to find, no
result. Looking at locale, things seem as expected:

[Bug 443004] Re: Eclipse GTK is not working correct - especially buttons

2009-10-28 Thread Kristian Rink
Adding to that, however, it _seems_ to be a GNOME related problem. Using
XFCE/Xubuntu desktop (also GTK+-based) on my platform doesn't expose
this issue, no matter whether or not GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 is set. Can
anyone confirm this, or is this just my system?

Same problem here, using stock packages off eclipse.org. Having plugins
installable via Eclipse Update Center rather than apt package management
seems the most common use case related to using Eclipse, so I see the
GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS solution to deal with this. :(

[Bug 347487] Re: starting virtual machine in virtualbox-ose freezes system

2009-04-01 Thread Kristian Rink
I am not sure whether this really is related to virtualbox or might be a
kernel issue: In my environment, I managed to boot up any VM reliably
after, in the VM configuration, disabling "VT-x/AMD-V" support (which is
not really what one wants on a Core2 Duo that actually supports VT).
However:

- Switching VT-x/AMD-V on and trying to boot the VM reliably ends up in
a complete system lockup (frozen UI, SysRq keys not working anymore,
machine not ping'able via LAN anymore).

- Switching off VT-x/AMD-V, the virtual machine comes up and seems to
work as expected.

So, overally, this is a workaround to at least get VMs in virtualbox-ose
running again.

[Bug 347487] [NEW] starting virtual machine in virtualbox-ose freezes system

2009-03-23 Thread Kristian Rink
Public bug reported:

Installed a jaunty testbed system on my machine (Tecra A8 notebook,
Core2 Duo CPU, 2GB RAM). Tried both Sun VirtualBox and virtualbox-ose
off the package repository, with the same result: Starting virtualbox
works well, vbox* modules also seem loaded. However as soon as I try
starting a virtual machine (no matter whether a newly created one or an
existing one restored from backup), the virtual machine window appears
and then the whole system immediately locks up inasmuch as that the GUI
doesn't respond anymore, no mouse/keyboard interactions are possible
anymore, and switching to any vt using ctrl+alt+f also doesn't work
anymore. Couldn't so far get closer to this, unfortunately...

[Bug 257602] Re: iwl3945 driver: unexpected IRQ trap?

2008-08-14 Thread Kristian Rink
Adding the "pci=nomsi" did provide quite some improvement so far:
Machine seems more performant even after being up all day, and the log
entries periodically dumped to dmesg have reduced to the following
lines:

[...]
[21834.120984] PM: Writing back config space on device :02:00.0 at offset 1
(was 12, writing 16)
[21834.121116] iwl3945: Radio disabled by HW RF Kill switch
[21834.121148] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device :02:00.0 disabled
[...]

I am unsure whether this is really a "problem" or just a logical
consequence of RF being disabled on my machine - should I still try
dumping the backport modules and see whether it completely goes away?

Cheers,
Kristian

[Bug 209888] [NEW] launching 3.x: profile rendered useless.

2008-03-31 Thread Kristian Rink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

- upgraded to current hardy build
- launched firefox 3.0 for the first time
- gone through the "checking for plugin updates" section
- found that some plugins I don't yet want to go with do not so far offer any
ff 3.x compliant versions
- installed and launched firefox-2 again.

Situation, afterwards: Firefox 2.x starts up using the old profile. All
addons are found while looking into the Addon Manager, but none of them
does actually work anymore, the UI is "plain Firefox 2" without any
extensions. Any attempts trying to get the old profile back to life
failed so far. Cleaned the profile and started anew manually
reinstalling all the extensions. Was able to reproduce this by
accidentially starting the "wrong" version of firefox (3.x), resulting
in the same outcome. Not terribly bad, but amazingly annoying. ;)

[Bug 200582] [NEW] hardy alpha6 installer: "cleaning" /usr/local mount?!

2008-03-10 Thread Kristian Rink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

First installment of hardy-6 actually makes me use my backup for the
first time in ages: Trying to have my old "/usr/local" partition already
configured to be mounted while in the installer, installation seemed to
"hang" a few moments showing a message resembling "cleaning conflicting
operating system files", and indeed it took me a while to see the
installer was actually "cleaning up" my /usr/local, which included
removing files I manually put there, most notably /usr/local/data which
is a place where I keep most of my not-user-specific files which are to
survive reinstallations.

Apart from whether or not putting anything vital to /usr/local is a good
idea: Should the installer really bother trying to "clean" and remove
files off /usr/local even while mounting this partition during the
installation? I doubt this is a good idea, given the overall
understanding of /usr/local being the "local" hierarchy... At least,
without pointing this out during install, this is a good way to trash
some files...

Not sure whether it is the same issue but at least the phenomenon is the
same (log file filling up with "APIC error on CPUx"). Seems to start
only if the system is put to some load, though (launching Eclipse,
VMWare or a database server).

Removing the ohci1394 module doesn't help, either:

I don't know whether this is really causing any trouble or just being an
"aesthetic" thing, but I would like to have getting it fixed anyhow. Kernel is
2.6.17-10-generic from Edgy.

Thanks,
Kristian

[Bug 63418] Re: CPU soft lockup during bootup

2007-01-03 Thread Kristian Rink
Not sure whether this is still of relevance; I've noticed the "soft
lockup detected" message on my Toshiba Tecra A8 a couple of times this
morning, leaving the machine unable to boot at all. It's a completely
new install, first time Linux installation on that very machine, so I
can't say whether or not it used to be different before. However, two
things:

- The notebook also is equipped with an ipw3945 based NIC, but obviously
whether or not the "kill switch" is enabled doesn't matter much - at
least the "BUG:" message appeared both having WLAN enabled and disabled,
and the machine also managed to boot up cleanly most of the time both
having WLAN dis- or enabled.

- Not sure whether this is anyhow related to that issue, I see my kernel
log being flooded with messages like this

[17184770.548000] APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)
[17184770.548000] APIC error on CPU1: 40(40)

Kernel is Edgy 2.6.17-10-generic.

Cheers,
Kris

[Bug 53333] Re: Database instance restart error

2006-12-08 Thread Kristian Rink
For what I have found out so far, MaxDB 7.5.00.* (same as 7.6.00.*) do
per default rely upon LD_ASSUME_KERNEL in order to avoid some threading
related issues (feel free to use the MaxDB mailing list archive or read
here - http://www.mysqltalk.org/sap-db-not-working-on-redhat-phoebe-the-
solution-vt71534.html - to see a few hints on that).

Basically, it boils down to the following, comparing Dapper (where it
works) and Edgy (where it doesn't work). Used stock installations in
both cases, and the error is the same no matter whether using MaxDB
7.5.00 or 7.6.00:

- box #1 (Ubuntu 6.06):

#> LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 x_server update

12916 XSERVER Found other running x_server with version 'X32/LINUX
7.5.0Build 038-121-133-420'
12926 XSERVER Version after update 'X32/LINUX 7.5.0Build
038-121-133-420'

- box #2 (Ubuntu 6.10):

#> LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 x_server status

x_server: error while loading shared libraries: libdl.so.2: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.something seems to be used by default in pre-built
MaxDB packages found at the MaxDB download site, so it is not working so
far. Unfortunately, with MaxDB in Ubuntu-universe being broken because
of unmet dependencies, there is no MaxDB on Edgy at the moment. :/

Cheers,
Kristian

[Bug 34752] Re: [atmel] breezy->dapper wifi lost: signal power to 0

2006-08-02 Thread Kristian Rink
My unlabeled Atmel based card

eth1: Atmel at76c50x. Version 0.98. MAC ...

doesn't work out of the box running Dapper and 2.6.15-26-k7. Same thing
using the dapper firmware and a custom build of Edgy 2.6.17 kernel so
maybe it's a firmware rather than a kernel issue?
