[Bug 946232] Re: [Dell Inspiron (MM061, MXC051), SigmaTel STAC9200] Missing speaker port

2012-05-03 Thread LarryJ
REF: David Henninson

The bug report from LarryJ is missing SSID information (LarryJ, could
you please attach alsa-info information according to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo ?)

David: See alsa-info.txt attached.

Also when Precise first boots to the login screen, I hear the drum
sound. From then on, no sounds are emitted from speaker. And again,
this laptop is dual boot with 10.04.4 and 12.04. The laptop sound
hardware works fine when booted into 10.04.4

I am not sure, but I believe this laptop does not have a built in mike.
Only a jack for an external mike. And that input/choice never shows
up in sound connections dialog. HTH de Larry

[Bug 946232] Re: [Dell Inspiron (MM061, MXC051), SigmaTel STAC9200] Missing speaker port

2012-04-28 Thread LarryJ
FYI from my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop: Mine is dual boot with
10.04.3 and Precise 12.04 Beta2. In Precise, analog is not available
for selection. In Lucid 10.04.3, only Analog shows in
System-Preferences-Sound. (choose a device to configure shows only one
choice which is Internal Audio.. 1 output...Analog Stereo Output.

So has any one considered handling this new problem that appears only
in Precise, in the same manner that Lucid Lynx deals with the absence
of hardware digital audio?

[Bug 987271] [NEW] Dell laptop has no sound after boot

2012-04-23 Thread LarryJ
Public bug reported:

When DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 12.04 LTS' shows the login screen,
I hear the familiar ka bonk. From then on, the laptop has no sound.
The Sound dialog Play sound through only shows Digital
Output(S/PDIF) not analog. This Dell Inspirion E1505 laptop is dual
boot with Ubuntu 10.04. Under 10.04 the laptop sound works OK. I've
been through the fix your own sound problems.

[Bug 695118] [NEW] invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/samba not found.

2010-12-28 Thread LarryJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-samba

Apparently after you make a change in the gui of system-config-samba, scs
attempts to restart samba using /etc/init.d/samba. From what I know, the
correct way to restart samba is with sudo service smbd restart or

Sorry but I couldn't tell if

596293

was a duplicate of this or not. Maybe another user will experience the
same error report that I reported. I have to depend on the automatic (
the one that prompts Do you want to make a bug report ) facility so my
reporting may be deficient. If I'm the only one experiencing this,
then probably it's something to do with my hardware? Anyway the error
apparently is harmless. My installs appear to be running OK.

[Bug 305606] Re: NetworkManager applet says No valid active connections found!

2009-11-15 Thread LarryJ
My Karmic 9.10 suffered from this oddity. Strangely, I lost connection
via eth0 wired when I plugged in a USB network card, which much to my
surprise came up and appeared to be functional. But after, the wired
interface was not working. However after mucking about, I found that In
Karmic 9.10, vic's post needs to be

 sudo /etc/init.d/network-manger restart

In karmic 9.10, sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart
sudo: /etc/init.d/NetworkManager: command not found

This is with Linux lian 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01
UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Maybe we can harmonize the NetworkManger(old?) with the network-
manager(new?).

[Bug 227838] Re: Failed to intialize HAL error message after gdm login. possibly because of wrong gdm priority in /etc/rc*/

2008-05-15 Thread LarryJ
I also get the error message(Failed to initialze HAL!) from a fresh
install of Hardy 8.04. cat I moved /etc/rc2.d/24hal to /etc/rc2.d/26.d
after reading the many trouble reports. I am now able to start hal
manually with $ sudo /etc/init.d/dbus start All of the functionality,
(network, etc) returns to the PC. But after DBus and HALD report OK,
System-Admininstration-Services shows but all the services are grayed
out and the unlock button is grayed out. If I attempt to start it using
~$ sudo services-admin, the Services Settings window appears but
again all the services entries are grayed out and the unlock button is
grayed out.

Note that this is a new install of Hardy 8.04. I didn't follow the
upgrade path noted in many of these reports. This is with Linux lian
2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
and Gnome 2.22.1 5/7/2008 the log file /var/log/gdm/:0.log contains
an line entry: [config/hal] couldn't initialise context: (null)
((null)) /var/log/messages has several entries related to error
messages apparently generated when invoking dhcdbd.

[Bug 205117] Re: Graphic for Manual Partition wrong size Kubuntu KDE4 8.04 Beta Desktop

Well so much for my first bug report. {;-( I went back to
reproduce the anomaly and I couldn't reproduce it using the same
settings described above. (Or any other combinations of partitions I
tried).

Either I imagined the error or misinterpreted the graphic.I think
the bug can be canceled.

Sorry for troubling everyone.

[Bug 205117] [NEW] Graphic for Manual Partition wrong size Kubuntu KDE4 8.04 Beta Desktop

2008-03-22 Thread LarryJ
Public bug reported:

I decided to put the betas installs l on separate partitions. So I put
the Kubuntu KDE4 8.04 Beta Desktop in the cdrom and selected a manual
partition. I asked for a primary partition of 50 GB mounted as / and
allocated to the beginning of the drive. Since I was planning to
install Ubuntu Beta on this same drive, I asked for a 5 GB swap file at
the end of the drive.

The drive was partitioned correctly as I requested. but the graphic
(green yellow bands) depicting the proportional sizes of the partitions
was wrong. The green length (depicting my 50 GB SDA1) was about the
size I expected for the 320 - 55 GBs of remaining free space. It almost
appeared the lengths were swapped. Definitely the green/yellow bar
lengths did not match the requested partitioned hd.Not sure if this
applies to Ubuntu 8.04 Beta Desktop also. I'll be installing it next.
For reference, the kubuntu disk I used showed #define DISKNAME
Kubuntu-KDE4 8.04 Hardy Heron - Beta i386 in the README.diskdefines
file.

This is present in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Beta LiveCD Desktop also. Instead
of the drop down list of mount points, there is a small orange square
displayed when the mount point drop down is clicked. The user is left
to guess what mount points are valid.

[Bug 204938] [NEW] F2 Language Selection Menu always displayed upon boot from CD

2008-03-21 Thread LarryJ
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 Beta CD. 1. I Boot from CD.2. The F2 Language screen
selection is automatically displayed (without me pressing F2) covering
up all the other selections, such as the one offering to let me try out
Ubuntu without changing anything on this computer. .To get rid of
it, I Press F2 or Escape then continue.

Is this normal? If it is, I never saw it with any other distributions
leading up to 8.04B.

[Bug 204943] [NEW] Must select F4 then Select Safe Graphics

2008-03-21 Thread LarryJ
Public bug reported:

After Booting the Beta 8.04 LiveCD, I am forced to select F4 then
select Safe Graphics mode. If I do not, I am presented with a screen
full of Green vertical stripes with Gray flashing vertical strips
interspersed. Then I'm forced to reboot because there is nothing
readable on the screen.

This doesn't seem right because my system is pretty much vanilla:
Nvidia G7300 GS graphics card and Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 MB.

Maybe make the default selection Safe Graphics . I also fought
this in Gutsy. Seems to me I had to use the alternate CD for
installation and ended up editing the xorg.conf many times.

[Bug 86139] Re: Installing usbmgr made system unbootable.

2007-12-15 Thread LarryJ
In Gutsy 7.10, this also occurs.

To see what happens. start Adept Manager. Find usbmgr and request
install. At the top, click Preview Changes. You'll see some 45
packages that will be !!REMOVED!! upon installation of usbmgr package.
This includes linux kernel images and Ubuntu supplied Linux modules.

After installing usbmgr, your machine will not boot as the kernel vmz
has been removed. Grub reports a filenot found -15 error (my
recollection).

At that point, you must reinstall which I just finished doing.
