I really wish you chaps would reconsider, even if it just meant adding the confirmation dialogues as an option and/or having them suppressed by default. Whenever this happens I'm not logged but it is rather odd because typically (i.e. when I lock the screen) Ubuntu will lock the screen with gnome-screensaver (I think) rather than lightdm/unity- greeter. I wonder if these two issues have the same route cause, being at least tangentially related (i.e. power management issues). If it is down to some package(s) monopolising or interfering with vaguely power management related functions (e.g. screen blanking, shutting down, restarting, etc…) the only package installed on my machine that vaguely fits the bill is Synapse (it has inbuilt shutdown and logoff commands and unlike indicator-session's equivalent entries they work for the time being). I also have panethon/elementaryOS daily packages (from their daily PPA) installed, but I can't see applications like wingpanel, plank, slingshot-launcher, gala (which I don't even use) and cerbere causing such mayhem (why would they even have need to touch these functions?). Anyway, I've tried killing synapse to see if doing so will 'release' these power management functions and it didn't work. Perhaps I need to reboot with synapse taken out of autostart to be sure. Also, I don't even HAVE a restart option in my indicator-session menu. Because the comment is only valid for the short period between when I perform an in-place upgrade and when I deign to re-enable said PPA's, which I typically do almost immediately. I'm generally no interested in keeping invalid comments in my sources, so I choose to remove the ammendments when I re-enable the PPAs. Which, as I've said is time consuming using software-properties-gtk (incidentally, why *do* comments show up in the PPA name field in software-properties-gtk?). In any case, I could equally ask developers why they think it desirable or neccissary to add such comments to my sources. You've already made provisions to warn the end user *during* the in-place upgrade that their third-party PPA's will be disabled. Do you think the end user a fool? Regards, Lee. P.S. Public bug reported: Greetings Developers, This isn't exactly a bug report in as much as it is a request to cease utterly unneccissary and counter productive proceedures during a in- place upgrade. Specifically the practice of appending the words 'disabled on upgrade to…' to any third-party PPA disabled during the upgrade. I realise of course that there is a geniune need to disable all third- party PPAs, but the process of re-enabeling them is arduous enough with the tools provided (namely software-properties-gtk) without having to also remove these ammendments. For reasons that I won't go into, I keep a stable of nearly 100 PPAs (although that includes source PPAs) and software-properties-gtk is woefully ill designed for managing large numbers of PPAs (e.g. enabeling via the tick box takes a good 4-5 seconds, thereafter the display resets to the top of the list, one cannot both enable a PPA and edit it's name in the same action, etc…). If you really must add a warning message, could you not patch software- properties-gtk to display a warning pop-up the first time software- properties-gtk is opened post upgrade? Although personally, the pop-up which appears during the in-place upgrade process warning users about the fact that these third-party PPA's are to be disabled is warning enough for me. Regards, Lee. [Bug 1285837] [NEW] Screen blanking triggers login screen
Public bug reported: Following a recent update, whenever I switch my display off via /xset dpms force off/ the display blanks (as expected), but a few second latter the display's backlight cycles on and off a few times before displaying the nVidia splash screen and then dumping me at the LightDM log-in screen. When I log back in it becomes clear that I was never actually logged out (so I suppose it would be more accurate to call it the LightDM switch user/lock screen). I do have Light Locker installed, but it's inactive and I have Saucy's default lock screen (gnome- screensaver?) set up for the time being. I'd love to provide you with more information, but I don't quite know where to start with this one. However, does it have to take so long? it really slows down progress when you're re-enabling/disabling a lot of repositories in one go. For me, the printer indicator is present from the outset/log-on, regardless of whether or not an active printer is connected, or whether or not there is a job in the queue. I *am* using wingpanel though, so I don't know whether this explains the indicators persistent presence, but the printer indicator really ought to only be present when an active or erroneous print job is present within the queue or (optionally) only if an active printer is connected. I've GOA, UOA and gnome-control-center-signon installed (as well as the various webaccount plugins), but whenever I attempt to set up an account (be it facebook, google, windows live, etc…) I'm shown the authentication page momentarily and then the control centre just flashes back to the UOA start page. I don't even have enough time to entre my username before I'm abruptly sent back to the beginning. In it's current state, I can't use empathy at all. How on Earth did 12.10 get released in this state?! That'll teach me to stray from LTS I guess. All thus guff with GOA vs UOA is a headache and frankly this is making Ubunuty 12.10 look very unattractive for me. I have a sneaky suspicious that this is what causes my NTFS data partition to crash every couple of days. I concur with Igor's last comment. I've recently started using an extension for Mozilla Firefox which integrates Firefox's password cache with the GNOME keyring and I was shocked to find that one could open seahorse and browse all of the passwords therein (within any unlocked keyring; I use the default login keyring) as plain text. It's one thing to unlock a key ring and allow a programme to access these passwords for the entire session (though it would be nice to see options to re-lock a keyring after x minutes and/or every time the screen locks), it's quite another to allow any interloper to access those passwords as plain text. I hope that this gets fixed soon. This seems like a fairly old/established bug, and one would have hoped a security issue like this would have been fixed by now. I don't mean to be patronising, condescending or a back-seat driver mind. Well, I have both the transmissionbt stable (https://launchpad.net/~transmissionbt/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=oneiric) and transmissionbt beta (https://launchpad.net/~transmissionbt/+archive/beta?field.series_filter=oneiric) PPA enabled and it looks as if the aforementioned installed version is from transmissionbt stable (odd that, would have though transmissionbt beta would have been ahead of stable). If there's any way I can help trace down this error, do let me know. I've tried running transmission-gtk from the terminal, but I don't see anything relevant to be honest. I also lacked an absence of of a debug option for transmission-gtk. [Bug 905441] [NEW] Various compiz plug-ins visual elements do not integrate well with the system colour scheme
Public bug reported: Various compiz plug-ins (e.g. resize info, resize window, grid, grab handles, etc.) use coloured visual elements (e.g. resizing rectangles, info/title labels and grab targets) to acheive their desired effect. At present, all of these plug-ins allow the user to manually select the colours of these various visual elements. It would be preferable, however, for these plug-ins to draw this information (automatically) from the systems colour scheme/theme (varying alpha transparency, hue, saturation, etc. from a base colour defined in the system colour scheme/theme as necessary). I user override would still be desirable, but the user should not need to manually reconfigure each and every such plug-in whenever they change colour scheme/theme. An cogent example; A default installation of Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) comes preconfigured with (broadly) orange coloured visual elements. This suits the default Ubuntu 11.10 colour scheme/theme very well. However, where a user to switch to a custom colour scheme/theme, such orange visual elements might look out of place. They certainly do with my currently preferred colour scheme/theme, eGTK (from elementaryOS). Public bug reported: When workspaces are arranged in a 2x2 grid (2 horizontal, 2 vertical) the Desktop Cube plug-in will only display the first 2 workspaces (cf. a 4x1 arrangement where the Desktop Cube plug-in will display all 4 workspaces). The reason that this is such an issue for me is that I use the Desktop Cube, Rotate Cube and Expo plug-ins and having a 2x2 arrangement of workspaces is the only way to get a space efficient 2x2 grid with the Expo plug-in. Steps to reproduce: 1. Set desktop to 2x2 workspace arrangement (CCSM > General Options > Desktop Size) 2. Enable Desktop Cube, Cube Rotate and Expo plug-ins. 3. I'm running an up to date install of Ubuntu 11.10 x86-64 (Oneiric Ocelot) and indicator-power still fails to remember my preference vis. display of battery time within the indicator panel. My preference is to not show time, but every time I restart my session or panel (wingpanel) the time remaining (or else 'unknown') is displayed. I've checked and double checked and the appropriate dconf settings are in place. I've attached a section of /var/log/syslog corresponding to one of these crashes, which occurred at around 23:20 (CET) these evening. It seems that I'm the only one experiencing this strange issue, so it's not a bug per se. That being said I would appreciate some assistance in diagnosing and possibly repairing this issue. The best Firefox, Chrome and Network-Manager can through out are rather generic and/or connection refused errors, which are diagnostically useless to me. Initially I though it might have something to do with certificates. Perhaps I inadvertently rejected a perfectly valid certificate? Although this does appear to be effecting a range of secure sites (Birkbeck College, Nectar and Halifax Secure and Mastercard 3D Authentication at last count) whilst not effecting others (Facebook, Google, etc...). I'm Stumped. It can't be a network issue for the following reasons: 1. The issue does NOT arise when I boot into Windows (on the same machine) 2. The issue DOES arise when I boot into Ubuntu 11.04 both at home and work/university 3. I have NOT recently changed any firewall settings (hardware or software) and yet those very same sites were accessible only a few days ago (as was my work/university VPN) I suppose it could be a configuration on my side, or a recent update. If there are no other reports of this nature then the latter seems very unlikely. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox As of approximately 2 days ago I have been unable to access certain (though not all) login/credential pages via either Firefox 4.0 or the latest version of Chromium under Ubuntu. This bug does NOT effect Firefox 4.0 under Windows 7 (I have a dual boot machine) and may also be the cause of issues I am experiencing when trying to connect to a work VPN. In both cases (VPN and login/credential pages) the connection is simply refused, and I am presented with an 'unable to connect' error in Firefox 4.0 and a 'Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): The server refused the connection' error in Chromium. If not I may play around with the nouveau drivers sometime in the near future. I'd avoided them as I'd heard that they aren't very compiz/visual effects friendly. Also, can you tell me whether smooth transitions was implemented upstream or via patches in Ubuntu (as Fedora appear to have done in the past). I'm curious, are there any on-going efforts to develop a telepathy connection manager for Skype? I've seen fleeting references to something called telepathy-spirit, although it would seem that this is/was a closed sourced project run by Nokia (bad form!) and as such is only available for Maemo/ARM. Frankly I'm getting rather fed up using Skype's own client and the telepathy-haze/libpurple workarounds are tedious and feature incomplete (no audio/video calls!). I seem to have a duplicate broadcast icon in my messenger menu also, although my system is entirely up to date. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: software-center For the past few weeks I have been experiences intermittent difficulties when trying to access the software sources dialogue via the software centre. Frequently clicking on the software sources entry in software centres edit menu will trigger a cache update rather than open the software sources dialogue (the default behaviour). Usually this resolves itself, in that several repeated attempts will launch the dialogue (patience is key). However, today that doesn't seem to be the case; I've made 16 attempts thus far, each resulting in a cache update and no software sources dialogue. I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10 (x86-64) with the stable version of Ubuntu Software Centre. If there is any further information I can provide, I would be glad to do so. Public bug reported: Greetings All, I've recently upgraded to Maverick (10.10 x86-64) from Lucid (10.04 x86-64) and notices that a few of my custom key bindings that functioned perfectly under Lucid no longer seem to function under Maverick. Specifically these key bindings where as follows: Key Combination Command XF86Display (Fn+F7) xset dpms force standby (switches display into standby/off) XF86MonBrightnessUp (Fn+F6) nvclock -S +10 (increases display brightness by 10%) XF86MonBrightnessUp (Fn+F5) nvclock -S -10 (decreases display brightness by 10%) As I say, these key bindings worked fine within Lucid (and Karmic) but no longer function. I have no idea how to 'check under the hood' as it were, so if anyone would be kind enough to direct me as to how monitor these key strokes to see what exactly is or is not going on I'll gladly post the output here. You can solve it by opening synaptic packet manager and manually upgrading docky from there, you'll be asked to confirm the removal of python-docky which may be why the update manager greyed out the option. Can somebody tell me if this is the correct behaviour? I'm experiencing a similar issue. I have the default cursor themes as well as the oxygen and comix cursor themes installed and have selected oxy-white as my cursor and yet the oxy-white theme only appears when I'm hovering over an application (e.g. Firefox, Docky, etc...). At all other times (i.e. when hovering over the desktop or any applications title bar) the cursor theme defaults to the first (alphabetically) cursor theme which was initially comix-black-large-slim but since then I've uninstalled the comix cursor theme and it now defaults to DMZ (black). Interestingly, before yesterday this issue seemed to effect all cursors except to default cursor arrow (i.e. the oxy-white cursor arrow would persist, but all other cursors (zoom, resize, etc...) would display as comix-black-large-slim. Hmm, explicitly prohibiting direct user interaction with notifications does seem like shooting oneself in the foot. For example it puts notify- osd at an immediate disadvantage when compared to many application- specific implementations. A case in point being Thunderbird; libnotify pop-ups are not nearly as useful to me as the default notifications displayed by Thunderbird, which allow left-click access to the inbox. I too am affected by this bug, and does make interaction with notify-osd and Ubuntu in general somewhat counter intuitive as notification bubbles often cover window controls (of maximised windows specifically) and other UI elements. I would suggest however that implementation of click-through, while elegant is not a long term solution, as it precludes direct user interaction with notifications. For example it would be impossible, so far as I can see, to click on a new mail notification and open up said e-mail(s) in the default e-mail client or webmail provider. A more long term solution might be to implement a default user interaction (perhaps middle mouse button) to close the notification bubble. I admit that is not as elegant as click-through, but it does allow for future developments in notification user interactions. Aesthetically speaking the fixed slot-allocation schema is, shall we say, less than perfect, as I'm sure has already been stated ad infinitum. How about moving asynchronous notifications (i.e. new mail and instant message notifications) to the bottom-right corner whilst maintaining synchronous notifications (i.e. volume and brightness adjustments) in the top-right corner. That way asynchronous notifications will not interfere with window controls or other application elements which is still an issue for some (myself included) under the current system. I really do think that moving the asynchronous notifications (which triggered by applications and require no user input) to the bottom-right corner is the best solution here. It would remove that unsightly gap whilst bringing the notification system in-line with those of other operating systems (e.g. Windows). It's worth remembering that a significant number of Ubuntu users are converts from other operating systems or dual-boot into them, and speaking one such convert I can tell you now that the bottom-right is the first place I look for asynchronous notifications (even after three months of solid Ubuntu). I am experiencing similar if not identical difficulties with Plymouth under Lucid x64. The only difference is that immediately after selecting boot options in grub I receive the following message: "init: plymouth main process (???) terminated with status 69" The "???" represents a number which is different upon each boot (i.e. it is not consistent). Thereafter, the terminal 'hangs' for a few seconds before displaying the message described by Colin, specifically: "mountall could not connect to plymouth" Thereafter a series of error concerning, from what I was able to read during the short boot time, udev and fsck. Since these error messages were relatively extensive and were only on screen for a fleeting moment I am unable to elaborate further. I have attempted to enable boot logging via the usual method (i.e. inserting BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes into /etc/default/bootlogd) but the boot log (/var/log/boot) is strangely empty. This may bare some relation to Bug #125710. In any case, if someone would be so kind as to provide me with detailed instructions on how to enable boot logging within Lucid I'd be glad to provide a full log of this behaviour. Interestingly, whilst plymouth appears reluctant to rear its head during boot time it does appear when rebooting/shutting down. Although in this instance the colour depth is less than perfect (i.e. 24-bit). Public bug reported: Binary package hint: indicator-applet I am currently running the latest beta of Lucid Lynx, and there doesn't appear to be an entry for Empathy/Chat in the indicator-applet. Incidentally there is not a Mail entry in the indicator-applet, although that is to be expected as I have uninstalled Evolution and replaced it with Thunderbird. Here follows a run-down of all of the relevant package installed on my laptop: empathy & empathy-common: 2.29.93-1+ppa10.4+1 indicator-applet: 0.3.4-0ubuntu1 telepathy-gnome: 23 telepathy-core: 23 P.S.: There is an identical bug to this (Bug #542432), however it appears to have been marked invalid and as my install is up-to-date (I've just this minute rebooted from a round of package updates) I assume the conclusions reached under said bug are not applicable in this case.
