[Bug 27463] Re: [needs-packaging] Fedora Directory Server for Ubuntu

2009-06-28 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
I had a chat with David Sugar (I believe he is a staff member from
Canonical). He suggests us to form a dedicated team to set up and
maintain the 389 directory server.

I have just done that and now we have got a new team called Ubuntu 389
Directory Server Team

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-389-directory-server

I have added:

Timothy Pearson (the Ubuntu packager)
David Sugar (Canonical staff(?), also a REVU reviewer)
Michele Baldessari (Debian 389 maintainer)

to this team.

Also this team now has a centralized ppa. So it would be nice if we can
port Timothy's ppa to the team ppa, with the correct name changes etc. At
the same time, Michele can make sure that this ppa compiles in the Debian
testing suite and get 389 accepted in Debian as well. In this way, the
team ppa will centralize the development of both Ubuntu and Debian port at
once.

I have just applied for an email list for this team and it is waiting for
approval. David, would you be able to approve the team email list?

Cheers,

kcleung

P.S. Apart from the package name changes, we should transfer the
maintainer of the packages from Timothy Pearson to Ubuntu 389 Directory
Server Team so that this project is now managed by the whole team.

Quoting Timothy Pearson kb9...@pearsoncomputing.net:

 Hi Michele,

I sent you an Email--hopefully I can help with your packaging. You're
right, it does not make sense to be maintaining two separate versions.

 Thanks!

 Tim

The reason why fedora-directory-server_1.2.0-2.dsc doesn't build on your

libsvrcore-dev) which are also along Tim's upload.

So you really need to test build these libraries first, then after they
are built, include Tim's PPA:

as an alternate source (OTHERMIRROR in .pbuilderrc)

Don't worry, Grame, I've tried and it builds perfectly. I hope the REVU

2009-06-05 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Dear Ubuntu-server and Ubuntu-desktop:

If you are also a REVU reviewer, would you please have a quick look at
the new Fedora Directory Server package for ubuntu?

Blueprint:

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/fedora-directory-server-
inclusion

The Fedora Directory server is the most advanced directory server in
Linux. Its functionalty supersedes LDAP and makes the sysadmin's life
much easier when managing computer resource / access for large networks.
The absence of FDS in Ubuntu was (and still is) a major factor
discouraging Ubuntu uptake.

This package is sitting in REVU and needs urgent review in order to make
it to 9.10 (Karmic). It is much better to introduce FDS in Karmic than
directly to the next LTS!

Hi Tim,

FDS 1.2.0 is already out, would you please update your port to 1.2.0?
Also the next ubuntu LTS release is 10.4, which Canonical doesn't like
introduce new features in, so if we want FDS to make it into the next
LTS release, we need to get it into 9.10.

Therefore we need to submit to revu.ubuntuwire.net very soon.

Re: [Bug 344642] Re: MIR - include aria2

2009-03-23 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
I mean to have aria2 in the *default installation*, alongside with wget.
aria2 supercedes wget because it allows multithreaded segmented downloads,
which can potentially speed up download by 5-10 times. And the size of
aria2 is very small anyway. Yes we install wget by default for scripts,
but we should encourage these scripts to be converted to aria2, by
installing aria2 *alongside wget* by default. (as mentioned by J Scott
Gwin)

Quoting Martin Pitt martin.p...@ubuntu.com:

Adding a full MB CD for this does not seem adequate to me, and having
 it
installed by default would be the only real reason to put it into
 main.
We ship wget by default which suits 99% of use cases (for the few
 users
who use command line tools for web retrieval in the first place).

Since wget is also used by a lot of scripts, we probably have to
 install
it by default anyway, thus the size impact of aria2 would be even
 bigger.

So again, what is to be gained from having aria2 in main, but not in a
 default installation?

Re: [Bug 344642] Re: MIR - include aria2

2009-03-20 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
1. Availability:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/a/aria2/

for all architectures

2. Rationale:
Aria2 supports multithreaded segmented download, thus greatly speed up
download. Also it has support for http(s), ftp and bittorrent protocol
and allow downloading of a file using multiple protocols at the same time

http://aria2.sourceforge.net/

aria2 actually supercedes wget and users should be encourage to use aria2
instead of wget. by including aria2 into main, we can encourage users to
use aria2 instead of wget.

3. Security
no CVE or secunia entries found for aria2
no binaries run at root or suid/sgids, no daemons
Network activity: download of the above protocol
only download data, but does not process files

4. QA
package always work out of the box
- no debconf questions asked
- no significant bugs in debian or ubuntu (other than no IPv6 support)
- upstream updates approximately eveery 6 month-1 year
- good debianand ubuntu support
- the universe package was automatically ported from debian

5. UI:
- text-only

6. standards compliance:
complies to FHS, Debian policy and debian library packageing guide
lintian check shows no error or warnings

7. Dependencies:
  libc-ares2
  library for asyncronous name resolves

  dep: libc6 (= 2.4)
  GNU C Library: Shared libraries
also a virtual package provided by libc6-udeb

  dep: libgcc1 (= 1:4.1.1)
  GCC support library

  dep: libgcrypt11 (= 1.4.0)
LGPL Crypto library - runtime library

  dep: libgnutls26 (= 2.4.0-0)
the GNU TLS library - runtime library

  dep: libsqlite3-0 (= 3.6.10)
  SQLite 3 shared library

  dep: libstdc++6 (= 4.2.1)
The GNU Standard C++ Library v3

  dep: libxml2 (= 2.6.27)
  GNOME XML library

  dep: zlib1g (= 1:1.1.4)
  compression library - runtime

all in main except libc-ares2.

I will file a separate MIR report for libc-ares2 shortly. This should be
eassy because libc-ares2 only depends on libc6.

8. Maintenance
simple package needs very little maintenance. Currently looked after by
Ubuntu MOTU developers, because it is automatically synced from debian

Quoting Martin Pitt martin.p...@ubuntu.com:

Hm, there are certainly several download tools in the universe, but
 what
would be gained with including it in main? Do you want to maintain it?

Please create a complete main inclusion report if you want to pursue
 this.

[Bug 312544] Jaunty pre-freeze Freeze Exception Request: lilypond

2009-01-09 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
I nearly finish packaging the new lilypond release 2.12.1, but Jaunty only
has 2.10.33

(see bug 312544)

Lilypond 2.12 contains many new features

http://www.lilypond.org

and I really like jaunty to have the updated version.

How can I upload the updated version and request any necessary freeze
exceptions?

Thanks!

[Bug 311014] [NEW] files are linked to the wrong directory

2008-12-23 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Public bug reported:

I have installed linux-headers-386-2.6.25.2.3 for intrepid.

all files are linked back to itself.

For instance, the file Makefile is linked to

../linux-headers-2.6.25-2/Makefile

whereas it should have been linked to:

../linux-ports-headers-2.6.25-2/Makefile

instead. This makes the header file unusable.

Re: [Bug 303323] Re: Please update LXDE to 0.4.8.6 and move to main

2008-11-29 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Oops, sorry.. I've misread the webpage and 0.3.2.1 is indeed the
newest version. However for LXDE to become an official Jaunty (or
Jaunty+1) flavour, I guess LXDE must be included into the main, together
with the lxubuntu-desktop metapackage which depends on everything that
makes a standalone operating system (have to pull the x.org backend
together with lightweight desktop apps, such as gnumeric, abiword, a
lightweight counterpart of evince, the browser kazekahase etc..)

So should we change the title of this to something like:

please move LXDE to main?

Thanks!

Quoting fabrice_sp [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
 Ubuntu better.
LXDE 4.8.6 is a packaging af a lot of components that have lower
 versions.
For example, lxde-common in Ubuntu is already at the latest version
 (0.3.2.1).

Can you please indicate which packages has to be updated?

 Thanks.

[Bug 303320] [NEW] lxubuntu-desktop

2008-11-28 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lxde

LXDE is an ultralightweight desktop, lighter than ubuntu and is suitable
for pre-P3 computers as well as Apple G3 and G4 series.

We really need to have a comprehensive and self-standing lxubuntu-
desktop package which pulls *all* packages necessary for the X-windows
backend as well as LXDE desktop together with useful tools such as
abiword, gnumeric and kazekahase.

It would be worthwhile to spin off a desktop Live CD, which is *part of
the ubuntu proper* rather than a spinoff of a previous Ubuntu version

Here I would also request LXDE to be included into the main repository
(I will file a separate bug report)

Re: [Bug 303320] [NEW] lxubuntu-desktop

2008-11-28 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
As mentioned in my last email, the problem with U-lite (or Ubuntu lite) is
that it is not part of the Ubuntu package system and it does *not* sync
with Ubuntu. We really need to get the lxubuntu-desktop meta package
working and rather than working on a previous stable release, we need to
work with Jaunty and get the meta package into Jaunty...

Quoting PCMan [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

There is already UbuntuLite which supports LXDE.
But it's not yet a installable desktop CD.
Maybe you guys can work together on this.

[Bug 299224] [NEW] [needs-packaging] package Nexenta kernel as a multiverse alternative

2008-11-17 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Public bug reported:

Dtrace is a very powerful tool in profiling performance for applications
across the user and kernel space, yet its CDDL license is incompartible
to the Linux GPL license, thus cannot be included in the Linux kernel
and as a result, I cannot use dtrace without switching from Ununtu to
one of the OS under Sun. (Systemtap is at this stage cannot do what I
want, so it is not yet a real alternative)

Therefore we should package the kernel of Nexenta. Nexenta is a Ubuntu-
based distribution that uses the SunOS kernel. However the compiler of
Nexenta is too old (gcc 4.0).

We should package the Nexenta SunOS kernel (I think CDDL license) as a
multiverse package and compile this kernel with whatever toolchain
currently used Ubuntu. Then users can feel free to use dtrace (and zfs
etc) without needing to switch distro

Re: [Bug 278069] Re: hal permission problems preventing jobs to be printed

2008-10-08 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
My printer is Brother MFC 8820D and it is also a USB printer

Quoting Orestes Mas [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Updating: The fact one printer works and the other doesn't is
irrellevant, as these printers use different backends (hp and hal).

The problematic printer is the one using the HAL backend. After some
googling I've found the suggestion of doing a chmod 700
/usr/lib/cups/backend/hal (and the same to the usb backend), and
restart cups. Doing so clears the Permission denied message, but
printer still doesn't work: it eats any document send to it without
printing nothing. At least for me.

Re: [Bug 253185] [NEW] should backport OpenMP 3.0 to gcc-4.3.1 for Intrepid

2008-08-04 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Hi,

I am now trying to navigate the gcc sourcecode. Is the openmp-3.0 stuff
built into gfortran, gcc and g++, outside the libgomp subdirectory?

So when I try to merge openmp stuff into gcc-4.3.1 source file, which part
of the current gcc svn should I look at? I am a bit lost
Obviously the the current trunk is 4.4 and I shouldn't merge everything at
the trunk to our gcc-4.3 source.

Alternatively, I can use gcc-snapshot. By definition, it is a snapshot of
the trunk (future 4.4). Am I correct? If I use this snapshot and compile
my own programs, then if my programs links to other libraries (standard
libraries as well as some specific libraries), do I have to recompile ALL
these libraries using gcc-snapshot as well? This is my initial motivation
for thinking about backporting openmp 3.0 to gcc-4.3.1

When I package brlcad, should I leave the default setting of the source

After installing Kubuntu-kde4 beta from livecd (and in fact on the

menus, konqueror complains that many shared libraries are missing. and I
fixed it by installing the basic kde4 packages included in the
metapackages kde4

The liveCD at the current stage looks unusable and scares beginner away.

2008-03-14 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Thanks a lot for uploading the 0.4.14-1ubuntu2, it now works perfectly.
In Konqueror 4.0.2, the right click button on some fields has a select
IM menu which allow me to specify scim. However many other KDE4 apps
such as Kate and Kwrite and even some fields in some webpages in
Konqueror does not allow me to select IM and I can therefore cannot use
Chinese input.

So is this a bug in scim-bridge? If so, we need to fix it quickly
before Kubuntu 8.04 release or CJK-input in KDE4 will remain unusable.

Re: [Bug 194509] Re: should include icedtea-java7-jre as an alternative dependency to allow inclusion and building into purely free distribution such as gobuntu

2008-03-07 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Yes, icedtea *IS* the free JRE you talked about and yes, icedtea is *not*
in non-free / multiverse. So for the time being (for hardy) would you
please please please *ignore* what happens in debian and use my patch to
set jabref to be built on icedtea-java7-jdk (I've already tested it and it
works perfectly).

Then we can move jabref *out* of the multiverse section and then quickly
persuade the maintainers of the metapackage texlive and texlive-latex3 to
include jabref into their dependencies (or at least recommended package)

Otherwise *no-one* will know your package and use jabref.

By the way, although icedtea is not yet in main, it is already in universe
and it is therefore 100% free (in Debian/gobuntu standard) and in my
opinion we really should switch to it *now*.

Quoting gregor herrmann [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

A few short thoughts from my point of view as the Debian maintainer of
 JabRef:

 1) I'd love to see JabRef run with a free JRE and then being included
in Debian and Ubuntu proper (and not in non-free/multiverse anymore).
 2) For the time being I cannot change this on the Debian side, as long
as icedtea is not in Debian.
 3) If Ubuntu decides to make the switch earlier that's perfectly fine
 with me, I'm even glad because it provides the possibility for tests;
it's just something that needs to happen by patching JabRef's version
in Ubuntu, and I can't help there.

Thanks for your initiative and your work!

 Cheers,
 gregor

[Bug 194509] [NEW] should include icedtea-java7-jre as an alternative dependency to allow inclusion and building into purely free distribution such as gobuntu

2008-03-07 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Public bug reported:

At this stage, jabref depends on the non-free sun-java, which is in
multiverse and prevents jabref to be built on a completely-free system,
thus cannot be included by default in ubuntu, or at least the Linux
latex metapackage.

Now I have included icedtea-java7-jre as an alternative dependency. I
have also included icedtea-java7-jdk as the build-dependency of jabref.

I have read your email list and realized that there are some resistance
in our group to change this situation, citing that this file is derived
from Debian and debian does not have icedtea etc. However in my
opinion, if we want jabref to be built and installed by default (which I
think it should) and therefore be visible to everyone who uses ubuntu /
kubuntu / xubuntu, we have to take the initiative and switch to the now-
free icedtea environment.

I have tested my patch and it both builds and runs perfectly on my
xubuntu hardy alpha 4 laptop.

[Bug 25966] Re: NEW PACKAGE: Printer drivers for Brother needed

Once the entire brother system is completed and verified to be working
properly, are there any ways to move them to restricted before the
release of Hardy? In this way it can be included in default
installation and possibly mitigate a lot of headaches

I have already uploaded the updated package to REVU http://revu.tauware.de/
However it will not get reviewed in the immediate future due to the feature

other ways so that it can be released in Hardy?

2008-02-28 Thread Leung, Kai-Cheung
Sorry for pounding on you. I didn't realize that you are *not* the ubuntu
maintainer. May I make the change for you? I can upload my changed
package to REVU where it can be reviewed.

 Agreed.

I know that icedtea is not yet in Debian, but why can't we just apply
 my
changes to the two lines in the control file and upload the
 resultant
package now? It already builds and runs perfectly in my box. What
 are the
  other obstacles?

 * icedtea is in Ubuntu.
 * icedtea is not yet in Debian.
 * I'm the maintainer of JabRef in Debian.
 * I'm not the maintainer of JabRef in Ubuntu (well, my name is still
there because Ubuntu just takes the package from Debian)
 * I have not access to Ubuntu resources, cannot upload or change
   anything on the Ubuntu side.
 * Adding icedtea to the package in Debian is inappropriate.
 * Conclusion: someone has to make the changes to the package in
Ubuntu. I'm sorry that I don't know enough about Ubuntu to be able
to tell you the correct procedure or who's responsible; but Ubuntu
_does_ change packages from Debian to make them fit better, so you
just have to find something who _can_ do that.

BTW: I think it's better to communicate via launchpad to make our
 thoughts available for everybody.

 Best regards,
 gregor

for rootstrap to be included (or maintained) by the pbuilder team
