Rolf, it's been a long time since I've noticed this problem - running,
for example, Firefox 3.6.12pre on both 64-bit and 32-bit Ubuntu

2010-05-24 Thread M Henri Day
Appears as «package skype 2.1.0.47-0medibuntu2 failed to
install/upgrade: försöker skriva över /etc/dbus-1/system.d/skype.conf
som också finns i paketet skype-common 0:2.1.0.47-0medibuntu2» on my

Lang : Swedish
Locale : sv_SE
Kernel version : 2.6.32-22.33

I discovered that I could resolve the problem by first uninstalling the
current version (2.1.0.47-0medibuntu2) of both «skype» and «skype-
common» in Synaptic, and then installing verson 2.1.0.81-1ubuntu4 of
«skype» from the package manager

2010-05-08 Thread M Henri Day
Hullo Erick and thanks for posting ! Interesting to see that you also
include a Swedish reference ! I'm hoping that enough people will sign
off on being affected by this problem so that the developers will take
it seriously - if we want, as I do, «every-day users» to consider Ubuntu
as an alternative to Windows, we have to make sure that this sort of
thing works directly out of the box, without users being forced to work-
arounds, even relatively simple ones like the testdisk solution

Thanks for posting, mgcarley ! It's a pity that this bug, which
certainly affects more than three users (!) has not yet been assigned,
and that the problem and its relatively simple solution (for most of us)
is not mentioned on the Lucid release-notes page
(http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:Boot_Sector)

Has the latter now been resolved after the update to GRUB2

2010-05-03 Thread M Henri Day
Luqe, your problem has nothing to do with the bug described here ; a
more suitable venue for discussing it would have been the Ubuntu fora.
Be that as it may, to resolve the problem you can install the
«StartupManager» from Synaptic, and then edit the timeout via System →
Administration → StartupManager

Unfortunately, this bug remains unassigned. The affected package would
seem to be grub2 rather than ubiquity, so I have now changed the bug
description accordingly. Hope someone competent will take an interest in
this matter as the bug does not seem to affect only my machines ; for my
part, however, I should very much like to be able to access the OSs in
question

[Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid

2010-05-02 Thread M Henri Day
Takkat, thank you very much indeed ! The Sourceforge testdisk app did
the trick for me on both my Ubuntu computers - when I came to «Boot», I
was informed that the «Boot sector» was not identical to the «Backup
boot sector». When this anomaly had been corrected and I exited, I found
that I could boot into the respective Windows loaders. Wonderful !
Obviously the problem was due to a change in the MBR-sector which in
turn had been caused by the upgrade. So even if, with Takkat's kind
help, I have now been able to correct the problem, I still deem this a
significant bug in need of crunching - users with multi-boot
installations who upgrade from Karmic to Lucid should not be faced with
this problem ! Hope the GRUB2 developers agree !...

Napstr, you might want to take a look at the separate bug report

Sonal, your problem *seems* to be the same as mine, i e, an inability to
boot into non-Ubuntu loaders even though they are displayed on the GRUB
menu, something for which, in accordance with a suggestion by Charlie

situation remains a trifle unclear to me ; can you or can you not boot

[Bug 570765] Re: [Lucid] no GRUB menu entry for other operating systems

2010-04-29 Thread M Henri Day
I hope the following won't be interpreted as an attempt to hijack this
thread, but the problem I'm experiencing with multiple-boots and Lucid
is not that the GRUB2 menu doesn't display my other OS-loader - it does
- but rather that the loader cannot be accessed from it. This on my main
(stationary) computer, and on my laptop, both of which are running an
AMD x86-64 dual-core processor. The strange thing is that on my laptop,
when I click the other OS loader in GRUB (1.98-1ubuntu5), the computer
reboots, while on my stationary box, I instead get a black screen with a
blinking dash, seemingly waiting for a command. I've checked using
GParted, and the non-Ubuntu OS installations are still there, but as
noted above, I can't open them. Updating using «sudo update-grub», which
I've tried many times, doesn't help - despite the loader in question
being registered. I've been experiencing this problem on my laptop ever
since Lucid beta 1 was released (the gory details can be found on pp 38
39 of the GRUB2 Basics thread
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275page=38) on the
English-language Ubuntu fora, to which I first posted on 23 March), and
on my stationary box ever since the release of beta 2

[Bug 571893] [NEW] Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid

2010-04-29 Thread M Henri Day
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

After upgrading from 64-bit Ubuntu Karmic to Ubuntu Lucid beta in a
multi-boot environment, I have been unable to access the Windows loader
from the GRUB2 menu, despite the fact that the loader is displayed. I
see this on two machines, both running AMD double-core processors. On
one machine, a laptop, when I click the Windows loader in GRUB
(1.98-1ubuntu5), the computer reboots instead of opening the loader. On
my stationary box, I instead get a blinking dash on the console,
seemingly waiting for a command, but without a prompt. I've checked
using GParted, and the non-Ubuntu OS installations are still there, but
as noted above, canot be opened. Updating using «sudo update-grub»,
which I've tried many times, doesn't help. I've been experiencing this
problem on the laptop ever since Lucid beta 1 was released (the gory
details can be found on pp 38 39 of the GRUB2 Basics thread
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275page=38) on the
English-language Ubuntu fora, to which I first posted on 23 March), and

[Bug 570765] Re: [Lucid] no GRUB menu entry for other operating systems

2010-04-29 Thread M Henri Day
Thank you, Charlie ; I am fully cognizant of the fact that this «is
really a bug report». Moreover, I regard the problem I described above
as a bug, quite similar to, if not identical with, the one reported by
Jeff Lane two days ago. In any event, I have taken your advice and
reported a new bug, #571893

[Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid

2010-04-29 Thread M Henri Day
Thanks for your speedy response, Jeff ! As a matter of fact, on both
machines, Windows was completely shut down before I upgraded from Karmic
to the respective Lucid betas. Both machines have two HDD, on one of
which Windows OS, on the other of which Ubuntu is installed. To provide
an example, here below the result of running «sudo fdisk -l» on my
stationary box :

Disk /dev/sda: 250,1 GB, 250059350016 byte

As can be seen, two Windows OS (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008) are
listed on /dev/sda, but I haven't been able to access them since
upgrading to Lucid beta 2

The problem I describe here is similar, but not identical to that you
described in bug #570765 ; it would be interesting to know if anyone
else has seen this

2009-10-17 Thread M Henri Day
Agree with Neil Wilson's post above - is it really necessary for a
warning of this type to be posted to users whose BIOS doesn't support
EEC ? I am certainly willing to be corrected here, but from what I
understand the problem - if, indeed, it can be considered such - is
hardly so grave as to merit a comment regarding the possibility of one's
system becoming unstable

[Bug 446505] Re: Update to 2.6.31-12.41 kernel fails to boot in GRUB 2

2009-10-09 Thread M Henri Day
Leann, the problem lay elsewhere, and after playing 'round a bit, I
finally managed half an hour ago to discover where. The kernel updates
were indeed being installed, precisely as described above, but my
machines - both of them ! - were trying to boot not from GRUB 1.97, but
from the legacy GRUB 0.97. As soon as I re-upgraded to GRUB2, they
started booting from the latest kernel update - presently 2.6.31-13.43.
Sorry to have wasted your valuable time !...

[Bug 351770] Re: SCIM doesn't work with Gmail on Jaunty beta when running Firefox 3.1 b3

2009-07-22 Thread M Henri Day
Rolf, it's not a problem when running Swiftweasel 3.5 b4/Shiretoko, but
it remains a problem when running Firefox 3.5.1 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U;
Linux i686 (x86_64) sv_SE; rev:1.9.1.1) Gecko/20090715 Firefox/3.5.1
GTB5). Interestingly enough, the problem seems to have been fixed in the
latest version of Minefield 3.6a1pre (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686
(x86_64) en_US; rev:1.9.2a1pre) Gecko/20090721 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty)
Minefield/3.6a1pre GTB3). When I check Synaptic, I see that I have an
update to FF 3.5 there, namely 3.5.2~hg20090720r26079+nobinonly-
0ubuntu1~umd1~jaunty, which I suspect might possibly work with SCIM, but
I can't seem get access to it on my box so that I can use it to replace
the 3.5.1 version mentioned above and run a test. Any suggestions as to
how I could do this ?...

[Bug 351770] Re: SCIM doesn't work with Gmail on Jaunty beta

2009-04-04 Thread M Henri Day
I can now be more precise : I have found that SCIM and Gmail work very
well together when running Firefox/Swifteasel 3.0.8 on Jaunty, but I see
the problem described above when running, as I usually do, Firefox 3.1
b3 on this system. The odd thing is that SCIM and Gmail worked fine
together when running Firefox 3.1 b3 on Intrepid on my 64-bit machine
but, as mentioned above, stopped doing so when I upgraded to Jaunty. So
is this a Jaunty problem, or a Firefox problem, or a SCIM problem, or a
Gmail problem ?

[Bug 351770] [NEW] SCIM doesn't work with Gmail on Jaunty beta

2009-03-30 Thread M Henri Day
Public bug reported:

Expected behaviour : SCIM (1.4.7-3ubuntu12) can be used to input CJK
text into a Gmail text box, as was the case in (64-bit) Intrepid and its
predecessors.

Observed behaviour : SCIM does not work in Gmail (or, for that matter,
in Launchpad) after upgrading to (64-bit) Jaunty beta. Nothing happens -
i e, no input choices are made available - when I click the SCIM button
on the Gnome panel when using these applications. It does, however, work
nominally, showing the choices I have selected, when I use such
applications as the Gnome text editor or different versions of OOo 3.

[Bug 248190] [NEW] Sound not working after flashplayer update

2008-07-13 Thread M Henri Day
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on an AMD 64 X2 5000+ machine with a Creative
Soundblaster X-Fi audiocard. All relevant updates are installed. Due to
the well-known problem with Creative drivers for Linux, I followed the
instructions on Ubuntu forum thread 571656 to get the audio working
using OSS4, which worked fairly satisfactorily until the recent non-free
flashplayer plugin update to 10.1.218+10.0.0.525ubuntu1~hardy1, after
which internet audio (e g, YouTube), no longer worked. Nor could I any
longer listen to CDs on my machine, something which I previously had
been able to do using, e g, Rhthymbox. I could still, however, listen to
downloaded music files, but not, as before, via Rythymbox ; the only
programme which now worked was VLC Media Player (but to rip a file from
a CD, I had to use Sound Juicer) ! This morning I installed the latest
flashplayer update
(10.1.218+10.0.0.525ubuntu1~hardy1+really9.0.1240ubuntu2), designed, I
understand, to resolve backporting problems, but alas, this did not
resolve the difficulties described above. To listen to internet audio or
directly to my CDs on my machine, I am forced to boot into Windows
OS

[Bug 163610] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] Ctrl-Shift-u shortcut is impossilbe because of competing gtk+ shortcut

2008-06-13 Thread M Henri Day
In the current version of Hardy, the result of the operation I mentioned
above differs depending upon the SCIM settings ; thus, for example, if
the input editor is set to input in Latin glyphs, entering
«Ctrl+Shift+u» in the gedit text editor results in an underlined «u».
When I continue by entering «5000», the result I see in the text editor
is an underlined «u5000». If I then press the space bar, the graph «倀»
does, in fact, appear. Thus, in contrast to the situation in March, when
I first posted this bug notice, it *is* possible to use the
«Ctrl+Shift+u» shortcut to input Unicode glyphs - it is merely that now
one first sees an underlined «u» and then an underlined «u-hexcode» in
the editor before the space bar is pressed, which was not the case
previous to Feisty, when nothing at all was seen until the space bar was
pressed. Note, however, that if SCIM is set to «Other - UIM direct»,
entering «Ctrl+Shift+u;5000» results in «5000» (no «u», no underlining)
being seen in the text editor, precisely as described above. But since
Unicode glyphs can now be successfully be entered as long as SCIM is set
to Latin text, I think the status of this bug can be changed to
resolved. I have checked this in OOo Writer, and it works in the same
manner there

[Bug 201846] Re: Hardy fails to load after log in

2008-06-05 Thread M Henri Day
No, Michael, the current stable builds seem to work very well, save that
something - an update yesterday ? - has suddenly made it impossible for
me to print documents on my HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-One machine : when
I click print nothing happens. I get the impression that the printer
isn't receiving signals from my computer. The other way 'round is fine -
I have no difficulty scanning. But this is matter for a separate bug
report, or a query on the Ubuntu fora

[Bug 219235] Re: Swiftweasel fails to load after Hardy beta update

2008-04-21 Thread M Henri Day
To my great relief, after installing a batch - well over 100 - of Hardy
beta updates a couple of days ago, the Swiftweasel browsers started
loading again. Another problem which then turned up, i e, that the
Google Toolbar failed to install on the Swiftweasel 2.x browser, was
resolved after I installed the latest - 29 - updates today (2008-04-21).
My thanks to the Hardy developers for the wonderful job they are doing
!...

[Bug 219235] [NEW] Swiftweasel fails to load after Hardy beta update

2008-04-18 Thread M Henri Day
Public bug reported:

After installing the latest batch of Hardy beta updates this morning
(2008-04-18), I suddenly found that neither my Swiftweasel 2.0.0.13-2
nor my Swiftweasel 3.0b4.5 browser (which until then had been working
perfectly) would load. I tried re-installing the former by downloading
the athlon64-64-bit_ubuntu-AMD64.deb package from Source Forge and
installing it over the earlier copy, but no joy ; it still wouldn't
load. An attempt to start via a terminal gave the following result :

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ swiftweasel
the settings directory exists
settings file check passed

But when I attempt to open Swiftweasel via the panel or Applications →
Internet → Swiftweasel Web Browser, it still fails to load

Re: [Bug 219235] Re: Swiftweasel fails to load after Hardy beta update

2008-04-18 Thread M Henri Day
How did you install swiftweasel to begin with? I can not find it in the
repositories. ...

Greg, for some reason, Swiftweasel is not found in the repositories, but can
easily be installed from
SourceForgehttp://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=195473.
Perhaps you could get in touch with Stickk at the Swiftweasel
Forumhttp://swiftweasel.tuxfamily.org/forum/index.phpand arrange for
cooperation on this issue ; if I remember correctly he has
tried to get Swiftweasel listed as a respository, but experienced some
difficulty in doing so. It would be wonderful if this problem could be
resolved, as Swiftweasel is a great product for Ubuntu users

[Bug 201846] [NEW] Hardy fails to load after log in

2008-03-13 Thread M Henri Day
Public bug reported:

On my AMD X64 dualcore 5000+ box, where, in addition to Gutsy on one
HDD, I was running XP and Vista on another, I performed an upgrade to
Hardy alpha 6 a couple of weeks ago in such a manner as to get Hardy and
Gutsy running in parallel on my first HDD. Hardy was accessed via
«Ubuntu Hardy (development branch) kernel 2.6.24-12-generic» on GRUB,
Gutsy via an earlier kernel. Hardy ran very smoothly for me - with the
exception of the standard problems in using my Creative Soundblaster
X-fi card on Linux - but after downloading an update package via
Synaptic a few days ago and re-booting my machine as requested, I found
that I could no longer load Hardy. GRUB still displays the appropriate
link, and when I click it I come to the log-in page, but after typing in
my name and password, I get only the blank orange screen and Hardy fails
to load, no matter how long I wait. Nor do I see the spinning circle
that indicates that loading is proceeding. No problem loading Gutsy, or
for that matter, the Windows OS, from GRUB, but I should very much like
to have Hardy back

Re: [Bug 199590] Re: [Hardy] Unicode Code Point entry (C-S-u code-point) is broken

2008-03-11 Thread M Henri Day
Michael, thanks for your speedy reply ! It would be wonderful if you've
found, as it seems, a solution to this problem, but I'm not sure I
understand exactly how to implement it. Just how can I change the toggle
settings for SCIM (if, indeed, this is what I am supposed to do) ; should I
open the «Settings» lank for SCIM ? I haven't found anything there that
corresponds to «raw code» ; could I prevail upon you to describe what is to
be done in a step-by-step fashion, so that I have a chance to follow the
instructions ? Thanks in advance !...

[Bug 199590] Re: [Hardy] Unicode Code Point entry (C-S-u code-point) is broken

2008-03-10 Thread M Henri Day
Michael, as you can see from the comment below that I've just posted to
another thread, this problem also occurs in Gutsy - it seems to be
connected to the SCIM update from version 1.4.4 to version 1.4.7. I very
much hope that the developers will be able to provide us with a way to
enter Unicode glyphs that doesn't conflict with the present version - or
later versions - of SCIM

Henri

I have previously (up to and including Ubuntu 7.04) been able to use
«Ctrl+Shift+u, hex code, space» to enter Unicode glyphs, e g,
«Ctrl+Shift+u,5000, space» resulted in the Chinese glyph «倀». After the
SCIM update to version 1.4.7, however, this is no longer possible ; when
attempting to enter the glyph, I get «5000 » instead. This is the case
both on Ubuntu 7.10 and the alpha 6 version of 8.04. SCIM is a wonderful
feature and required for the type of work I do, but I should also like
to have the opportunity to enter Unicode glyphs ad libitum. Can this
interference - as I presume it is - be resolved, or another key pattern
assigned to Unicode glyphs ?...

[Bug 82107] Scim launcher reported as crashing on start of FF

2007-01-29 Thread M Henri Day
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

Bug report : /var/crash/_usr_lib_scim-1.0_scim-launcher.1000.crash

Despite the above report, which I receive almost every time I start my
computer, SCIM does launch when I start FF, and generally speaking works
well
