[Bug 571893] Re: Unable to access non-Ubuntu loaders from GRUB2 menu in Lucid
Takkat, thank you very much indeed ! The Sourceforge testdisk app did the trick for me on both my Ubuntu computers - when I came to «Boot», I was informed that the «Boot sector» was not identical to the «Backup boot sector». When this anomaly had been corrected and I exited, I found that I could boot into the respective Windows loaders. Wonderful ! Obviously the problem was due to a change in the MBR-sector which in turn had been caused by the upgrade. So even if, with Takkat's kind help, I have now been able to correct the problem, I still deem this a significant bug in need of crunching - users with multi-boot installations who upgrade from Karmic to Lucid should not be faced with this problem ! [Bug 570765] Re: [Lucid] no GRUB menu entry for other operating systems
I hope the following won't be interpreted as an attempt to hijack this thread, but the problem I'm experiencing with multiple-boots and Lucid is not that the GRUB2 menu doesn't display my other OS-loader - it does - but rather that the loader cannot be accessed from it. This on my main (stationary) computer, and on my laptop, both of which are running an AMD x86-64 dual-core processor. The strange thing is that on my laptop, when I click the other OS loader in GRUB (1.98-1ubuntu5), the computer reboots, while on my stationary box, I instead get a black screen with a blinking dash, seemingly waiting for a command. I've checked using GParted, and the non-Ubuntu OS installations are still there, but as noted above, I can't open them. Updating using «sudo update-grub», which I've tried many times, doesn't help - despite the loader in question being registered. I've been experiencing this problem on my laptop ever since Lucid beta 1 was released (the gory details can be found on pp 38 39 of the GRUB2 Basics thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275page=38) on the English-language Ubuntu fora, to which I first posted on 23 March), and on my stationary box ever since the release of beta 2 Henri -- [Lucid] no GRUB menu entry for other operating systems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can now be more precise : I have found that SCIM and Gmail work very well together when running Firefox/Swifteasel 3.0.8 on Jaunty, but I see the problem described above when running, as I usually do, Firefox 3.1 b3 on this system. [Bug 248190] [NEW] Sound not working after flashplayer update
Public bug reported: I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on an AMD 64 X2 5000+ machine with a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi audiocard. All relevant updates are installed. Due to the well-known problem with Creative drivers for Linux, I followed the instructions on Ubuntu forum thread 571656 to get the audio working using OSS4, which worked fairly satisfactorily until the recent non-free flashplayer plugin update to 10.1.218+10.0.0.525ubuntu1~hardy1, after which internet audio (e g, YouTube), no longer worked. Nor could I any longer listen to CDs on my machine, something which I previously had been able to do using, e g, Rhthymbox. I could still, however, listen to downloaded music files, but not, as before, via Rythymbox ; the only programme which now worked was VLC Media Player (but to rip a file from a CD, I had to use Sound Juicer) ! This morning I installed the latest flashplayer update (10.1.218+10.0.0.525ubuntu1~hardy1+really9.0.1240ubuntu2), designed, I understand, to resolve backporting problems, but alas, this did not resolve the difficulties described above. [Bug 163610] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] Ctrl-Shift-u shortcut is impossilbe because of competing gtk+ shortcut
In the current version of Hardy, the result of the operation I mentioned above differs depending upon the SCIM settings ; thus, for example, if the input editor is set to input in Latin glyphs, entering «Ctrl+Shift+u» in the gedit text editor results in an underlined «u». When I continue by entering «5000», the result I see in the text editor is an underlined «u5000». If I then press the space bar, the graph «倀» does, in fact, appear. Thus, in contrast to the situation in March, when I first posted this bug notice, it *is* possible to use the «Ctrl+Shift+u» shortcut to input Unicode glyphs - it is merely that now one first sees an underlined «u» and then an underlined «u-hexcode» in the editor before the space bar is pressed, which was not the case previous to Feisty, when nothing at all was seen until the space bar was pressed. Note, however, that if SCIM is set to «Other - UIM direct», entering «Ctrl+Shift+u;5000» results in «5000» (no «u», no underlining) being seen in the text editor, precisely as described above. But since Unicode glyphs can now be successfully be entered as long as SCIM is set to Latin text, I think the status of this bug can be changed to resolved. I have checked this in OOo Writer, and it works in the same manner there Henri -- [Upstream] [hardy] Ctrl-Shift-u shortcut is impossilbe because of competing gtk+ shortcut https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/163610 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 201846] [NEW] Hardy fails to load after log in
Public bug reported: On my AMD X64 dualcore 5000+ box, where, in addition to Gutsy on one HDD, I was running XP and Vista on another, I performed an upgrade to Hardy alpha 6 a couple of weeks ago in such a manner as to get Hardy and Gutsy running in parallel on my first HDD. Hardy was accessed via «Ubuntu Hardy (development branch) kernel 2.6.24-12-generic» on GRUB, Gutsy via an earlier kernel. Hardy ran very smoothly for me - with the exception of the standard problems in using my Creative Soundblaster X-fi card on Linux - but after downloading an update package via Synaptic a few days ago and re-booting my machine as requested, I found that I could no longer load Hardy. GRUB still displays the appropriate link, and when I click it I come to the log-in page, but after typing in my name and password, I get only the blank orange screen and Hardy fails to load, no matter how long I wait. Nor do I see the spinning circle that indicates that loading is proceeding. No problem loading Gutsy, or for that matter, the Windows OS, from GRUB, but I should very much like to have Hardy back Henri ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Hardy fails to load after log in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201846 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 199590] Re: [Hardy] Unicode Code Point entry (C-S-u code-point) is broken
Michael, thanks for your speedy reply ! It would be wonderful if you've found, as it seems, a solution to this problem, but I'm not sure I understand exactly how to implement it. Just how can I change the toggle settings for SCIM (if, indeed, this is what I am supposed to do) ; should I open the «Settings» lank for SCIM ? I haven't found anything there that corresponds to «raw code» ; could I prevail upon you to describe what is to be done in a step-by-step fashion, so that I have a chance to follow the instructions ? Thanks in advance !... [Bug 199590] Re: [Hardy] Unicode Code Point entry (C-S-u code-point) is broken
Michael, as you can see from the comment below that I've just posted to another thread, this problem also occurs in Gutsy - it seems to be connected to the SCIM update from version 1.4.4 to version 1.4.7. I very much hope that the developers will be able to provide us with a way to enter Unicode glyphs that doesn't conflict with the present version - or later versions - of SCIM Henri I have previously (up to and including Ubuntu 7.04) been able to use «Ctrl+Shift+u, hex code, space» to enter Unicode glyphs, e g, «Ctrl+Shift+u,5000, space» resulted in the Chinese glyph «倀». After the SCIM update to version 1.4.7, however, this is no longer possible ; when attempting to enter the glyph, I get «5000 » instead. This is the case both on Ubuntu 7.10 and the alpha 6 version of 8.04. SCIM is a wonderful feature and required for the type of work I do, but I should also like to have the opportunity to enter Unicode glyphs ad libitum. Can this interference - as I presume it is - be resolved, or another key pattern assigned to Unicode glyphs ?... -- [Hardy] Unicode Code Point entry (C-S-u code-point) is broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/199590 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
