Re: [Bug 1942803] Re: grub-install failed during reinstall
I finally managed to get it to install (using minimal) on the 6th try. The only thing I did differently was watch the logs and not click any buttons if the logs showed that something was in progress. [Bug 1942803] [NEW] grub-install failed during reinstall
Public bug reported: This machine was previously running 18.04. I decided to replace it with 21.04 (using the ISO via USB) rather than doing an in-place upgrade. The Ubiquiti installer gets to the grub-install step then fails with: ``` Executing grub-install /dev/nvme2n1 failed This is a fatal error ``` TBH I would have expected that it should have been something like /dev/nvme2n1p1 since that was the vfat partition it created. I tried enabling the same kernel configuration I used to finally get 18.04 to install a couple years ago, but with the same end result. [Bug 1765838] Re: BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:000000002ddfedce idx:2 val:-1
Unfortunately, the system is unusable this morning. Still trying to recover it. May have to flatline it again. It seems I have gotten myself stuck in a loop: 1. try to reboot and that causes kernel panic 2. after that happens a few times, the NVME needs fsck'd because of corrupt group descriptors 3. `fsck -CVvfy` the drive (twice for the ext partition and once for the EFI) 4. after doing 1-3 a few times, packages and symlinks start getting broken. I try to manually repair them until eventually I can't get into the system anymore. I tried to run memtest. If it is set to 1 cpu at a time, it goes without error until it eventually hangs on a random (inconsistent) test. If I run with all cpus, it shows tons of errors pretty quickly. Always on the same bit of every bank (ie: 80808080 -> 8080A080) and always off by two. But again, it doesn't do that unless multiple cpus are running at the same time. I thought it could be the other security features (interleaving, memory encryption, etc) that the BIOS has set to auto. Launching the live usb and just sitting at a terminal with `journalctl --follow`, the last thing that happens before it hangs is usually cleaning temp files; but I haven't run that enough to know if it is a pattern. >From the BIOS, I can set it to auto overclock or manual -- there is no option to disable overclocking; so I cleared the CMOS and tried again immediately after that without any change. I have attempted 44 bionic installs this month. 4 of those went through to completion. Two normal and two minimal. The rest failed during ubiquity. grub-install almost always succeeds when acpi=off and almost always hangs when it isn't. I also have to have pcie_aspm=off or the system is spammed with errors and crashes quickly. Others have reported the same thing for threadripper. I have tried with and without livepatch enabled. The system is stable when mining or gaming, and seems unstable when underutilized -- so I tried disabling the C-states in the BIOS. I have tried disabling every form of power management I could find in the OS and in the BIOS. I am sure I have missed quite a few. I have tried manually updating the kernel (per your requests) as well as using ukuu. Since it is my primary machine, I tend to have things installed that have to then be uninstalled for that to work well (like nvidia drivers, virtualbox, etc). I am seeing a ton of segfaults, even from the live usb. It more often happens when the machine is sitting idle for a few minutes (which is what had me thinking about power management). I thought it could be the memory, but since they don't fail memtest (if I run then 1 cpu at a time) I know that "Erase disk and reinstall" will not solve the problem. It would be nice to figure out how to solve the problem before I do that again. So... I'm not sure how I can try a new kernel for you. If there is some way for me to update a live usb with an alternate kernel from a live usb; that might work since I see errors on the daily bionic iso as well. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1765838 Title: BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:2ddfedce idx:2 val:-1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1765838/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1762009] Re: ubiquity crashed on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Beta 2 ISO from USB while entering new credentials
Pratik - If you don't see the boot menu (Try Ubuntu, Install Ubuntu, etc) - hold the shift button when booting until you do see it. I wasn't sure which button it was, so I was alternating between shift and F6, but I am pretty sure it is shift. Once you see the menu, you will have a short delay before it automatically times out. If you at least use the arrow keys really quick to move around, it will give you some breathing room. You can use either Try or Install, but I was using Try so that I could disable power save from the settings menu before starting the installer. Move the arrow to the one you want, and click `e` for edit (there should be instructions at the bottom of the page telling you that in case you forget. Use the arrow keys to move down to the line starting with `linux ` and add `acpi=off` before the end. Note, if you see something like `---` or `$vt_handoff` those have to be last. I normally just replace the `quiet splash` because you don't really want those. When you are ready, hit `F10`. The instructions are at the bottom if you forget. The screen will be HUGE. I think it is 800x600 or maybe even 640x480. The installer barely fits on the screen. The changes will not persist. If you have to restart the installer, you will have to do it again. If the install completes, the new system will not have that option enabled. I do not think you want it enabled on the live system, but if you do - it goes into /etc/default/grub. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1762009 Title: ubiquity crashed on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Beta 2 ISO from USB while entering new credentials To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1762009/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1762237] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffd913ad935e20
Hi Joseph, I was having a similar bug; see 1759865, 1760461, 1759947 I tried getting that kernel installed. Without nvidia driver, I couldn't get the system booted. With it, I couldn't get the kernel to install. After some time, grub-install no longer worked, even from liveusb or recovery. I ended up "Erase disk and reinstall Ubuntu" last weekend and this report is from the new system. I am wondering if this problem is being caused by the 128gb of ram. I don't seem to have similar problems with the 32gb laptop running 16.04. Also, I thought the system was just unstable, but I played Uplink last night for 5 hours without any errors in dmesg. It seems to have more problems w/ browser activity (Firefox in this report, but tons more crashes since installing Chrome for work). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1762237 Title: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at d913ad935e20 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1762237/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1043651] [NEW] Package system broken
Public bug reported: The package system on my install is not working at all. I'm unable to download applications from the software center, via tarballs, or via terminal package install. Haven't tried synaptic, as I'm unable to download it to use it... Obviously, I've tried sudo apt-get -f install and the dpkg configure command, neither to any avail. This has been going on for nearly a month, and it is due to two broken packages 'empathy-common' and 'gnome-sudoku' both of which originally failed to update after a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04. Since then, I've been completely unable to use the package system. I have no 3rd party repo's enabled or anything of the sort. [Bug 1026427] [NEW] package empathy-common 3.4.1-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: package empathy-common is already installed and configured
Public bug reported: Problem first surfaced on a fresh installation of 12.04, I attempted to update using 'Update Manager.' Admittably, I'm fairly new to Linux and this could somehow be my fault. At any rate, the upgrade seemingly failed for this package 'empathy-common' (version number included in bug report) and also for gnome sudoku (separate bug report soon to be filed.) Since the update failed, my package system has been broken and I'm unable to install packages via the terminal from repositories, or via the Software Center. [Bug 1002573] [NEW] FF defunct processes
Public bug reported: As of this morning, I have had to reboot a few times because the system was unable to acquire memory to even fork a process. This last time, after booting, I decided to try to figure out what it is. It appears that as long as Firefox is running (even if not doing anything) it keeps spawning defunct processes until the system has to be rebooted (if it happens when the screensaver is on - preventing FF from being killed). ps -ef | grep defunct | grep -v grep | wc -l shows an ever increasing number It was over 3000 before I last killed it off. [Bug 407855] Re: firefox awesome bar doesnt connect to ubuntu.com
I checked how it formatted in the attachment, and it presents in the standard firefox format when you can't connect to a website. I've also checked and made sure that it's not wm specific (I'm using e17, but this also presents in gnome and fluxbox). -- firefox awesome bar doesnt connect to ubuntu.com https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/407855 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 392970] [NEW] after nvidia card overheats, cpu load stays maxed out
Public bug reported: I have an HP Pavilion dv2000 so the overheating is expected. However, in karmic, when the card overheats pst the scailing point (105 C, and i hit 106-110 with ease on 2d games), when i shut the game/compiz down, the cpu load stays maxed out, though Xorg and other processes stay at the normal computer usage rates. I have a nvidia 7100 geforce with it, and have experienced the overheating with every driver since hardy (ie when I started gaming on linux). Using nouveau, nv or older drivers did not help. Considering the hardware I'm on, this may be a problem limited to this model. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- after nvidia card overheats, cpu load stays maxed out https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392970 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
