[Bug 1829404] [NEW] Suspends to RAM when shutdown order has been given if laptop lid is closed.

2019-05-16 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

When I click to shutdown the laptop, if I close the lid before the
shutdown process is completed, the laptop goes to sleep. This is
annoying because it is consuming battery but specially because the
suspend to RAM does not cancel the shutdown. When I open the laptop
again, it restores from RAM, takes several minutes to shutdown and then
I have to turn it on again.

[Bug 1797872] Re: ntpd keeps Soliciting pool server

2018-10-19 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Both of them work. I don't understand how the last command can work and
I may still be behind a firewall.

Also:

$ timedatectl status
 Network time on: yes
NTP synchronized: yes

So it seems it is synchronized, it just re-tries too frequently.

[Bug 1792213] [NEW] kernel update breaks X server: /dev/dri/card0: failed to set DRM interface version 1.4: Permission denied

2018-09-12 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

Updating to linux-image-4.15.0-34-generic broke X at start-up.

Reverting back to linux-image-4.15.0-33-generic fixed it.

By the way, the failsafe X did not offer this option and nothing offered
worked for me. This felt like being back in the 90s...

[Bug 1612753] [NEW] drkonqui does not suggest debug packages

2016-08-12 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

Okular crashes, drkonqui launches, after a few clicks, the backtrace is
not useful. The dialog says: "install the needed packages and click
Reload". However, the list of files:

/usr/bin/okular
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQtCore.so.4
/usr/lib/libokularcore.so.7
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQtGui.so.4
/usr/lib/libkdeui.so.5
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQtDBus.so.4
/usr/lib/kde4/okularpart.so

These are no packages. The user is at a loss about what packages they
need to install. What is the point of launching drkonqui at all?

[Bug 1604628] Re: Thunderbird Icon set is broken (ugly, black and white, monochrome icons/theme)

2016-07-26 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
I was wrong and Thunderbird 45 now follows the GTK3 theme. You can test
it by switching to Breeze-Dark. The icons change to white on black. See
also https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-thunderbird-45

Thus, nothing to do with Ubuntu/Kubuntu, this is the default now. Oh
well, we'll have to wait until the next designer wave comes and the
theme changes again. Sorry for the noise.

** Changed in: thunderbird (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Invalid

However, the work-around given in bug #1004841 doesn't work anymore.

The default theme in linux is not monochrome:

[Bug 1604628] [NEW] Thunderbird Icon set is broken (ugly, black and white, monochrome icons/theme)

2016-07-19 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

thunderbird (1:45.2.0+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1) again (bug #1004841)
overrides the default theme with ugly monochrome icons. Instead of
adding a theme and using it by default, there are three patches that
override the default linux theme:

theme-refresh-addressbook-toolbar-icons.patch
theme-refresh-compose-toolbar-icons.patch
theme-refresh-messenger-toolbar-icons.patch

They say:

Description: Use monochrome icons for the messenger window toolbar

[Bug 1590025] [NEW] Invalid colour specification for setting diff_cmd (diff) in /etc/colordiffrc

2016-06-07 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 16.04

The default /etc/colordiffrc produces this warning:

Invalid colour specification for setting diff_cmd (diff) in
/etc/colordiffrc

The key is to comment out the line for diff_cmd:

# Example colordiffrc file for dark backgrounds
#
# Set banner=no to suppress authorship info at top of
# colordiff output
banner=no
# By default, when colordiff output is being redirected
# to a file, it detects this and does not colour-highlight
# To make the patch file *include* colours, change the option
# below to 'yes'
color_patches=no
# Sometimes it can be useful to specify which diff command to
# use: that can be specified here
#diff_cmd=diff
#
# available colours are: white, yellow, green, blue,
#cyan, red, magenta, black,
#darkwhite, darkyellow, darkgreen,
#darkblue, darkcyan, darkred,
#darkmagenta, darkblack
#
# Can also specify 'none', 'normal' or 'off' which are all
# aliases for the same thing, namely "don't colour highlight
# this, use the default output colour"
#
plain=off
newtext=darkgreen
oldtext=darkred
diffstuff=darkcyan
cvsstuff=cyan

[Bug 1586837] Re: unlabeled tick-marks in Networks tray window

Why ubuntu-bug allows me to report bugs for packages I don't even have

Since bugs are reported to launchpad now and not bugs.kde.org, is it worth it
at all?
Do any KDE/Kubuntu devs look at bugs in launchpad.net ?

[Bug 1582294] [NEW] Icons-only task manager in plasma 5 too small icons, ugly rectangles, no minimized indicator, no multiple windows indicator

2016-05-16 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

The icons-only task manager widget in plasma 5 (Kubuntu 16.04) has
regressed in several aspects with respect to the version in 14.04.

Icons are now tiny compared with the "quick launcher" widget. Rectangles
around the icons take space and are not useful because they do not give
any information about the minimized state of the application. There is
now no indicator that a single icon represents multiple windows. Windows
asking for attention do not flash/highlight anymore.

[Bug 1582281] [NEW] plasma compositor only works with XRender (flickering; artifacts; repaint; scren update issues)

2016-05-16 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

After a fresh install of Kubuntu 16.04. The default settings of the
compositor lead to flickering, screen artifacts, screen repaint/update
issues. All compositor settings except XRender show similar issues.
XRender however is much slower and have fewer effects than those
available in Kubuntu 14.04.

working with Kubuntu 14.04, test with the live version before updating
to 16.04!

[Bug 1460096] [NEW] temporarily disable a printer

2015-05-29 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

I have a few printers that only work when I'm at certain locations. I
would like to disable those printers temporarily (rather than delete
them) in System Settings->Printers. This would mean that the printers
will not be active, their status will not be pooled and they will not
appear in the list of printers in any print dialog.

[Bug 1446120] [NEW] bundledoc requires compress but ncompress is not listed as a dependency

2015-04-20 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

bundledoc tries to execute:

compress is provided by the package ncompress, which is not a dependency of the
texlive-extra package.

(tar -cvf - "talk" | compress > "talk".tar.Z)

EXECUTING: (tar -cvf - "talk" | compress > "talk".tar.Z)
   (BDINPUTS = "talk")
sh: 1: compress: not found
bundledoc: Inappropriate ioctl for device. Failing command was:
(tar -cvf - "talk" | compress > "talk".tar.Z)

It would be better if bundledoc used gzip by default, which is more
common and better supported.

[Bug 60448] Re: .xsession-errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space

2015-02-01 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Someone already did, and it is called journald:
http://0pointer.net/blog/projects/journalctl.html
Recent versions of gdm, kdm and dbus already use the journald by default to
replace .xsession-errors, and thus avoid all these problems. I guess we only
have to wait for Ubuntu to catch up to Fedora and OpenSuse. (I don't know about
CentOS, but it unavoidable that journald will be the default there eventually)

[Bug 133133]

2015-01-31 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
(In reply to kolAflash from comment #43)
> Everyone who worries about this bug, please click the little "vote" button
> at the top and vote for this bug to be solved!
> Every vote counts! ;-)

The main purpose of voting is to avoid the annoying and useless "Me
too!" messages: see bug 374002. Votes do not influence which bugs get
fixed.

(In reply to Szczepan Hołyszewski from comment #42)
> I am starting to suspect developer malice here.

That seems uncalled for. Firefox developers working on Linux issues are
very few and hard-working. They need more love and support and not users
throwing accusations. Also, if you honestly want to see support of Linux
continued, you are shooting yourself in the foot with such a comment:
Which developer wants to work on supporting an OS when users of that OS
accuse them of malice? Scaring developers away is not the way to improve
such support!

The reality is that there are very few Firefox developers that use
GNU/Linux, and all of them probably use GNOME/GTK. GTK developers have
contributed at lot to Mozilla/Firefox, whereas KDE has its own browser
(Konqueror and now Rekonq). The people that have tried to improve
Firefox on KDE have done so by creating add-ons or distribution-specific
patches. This is a quick way to get results but tends to bitrot and
break sooner or later.

The *only* way Firefox support for KDE will improve is if people using
Firefox on KDE join Firefox development and do it. If you cannot do it
yourself for lack of time or skills, create a kickstarter and hire a
developer that can. If you do not have skills, money, or time, and you
cannot figure out another way to help, then resign yourself in silence
because it will probably get worse. Attacking developers, whining and
useless comments (mine ones included, unfortunately) only make
developers *less* inclined to follow bug reports about KDE.

This is related to bug 1218350, however, adding a wrapper around
/usr/bin/gs to add -dUseCIEColor still generates the error.

Following http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=694066#c4 adding
-dColorConversionStrategy=/LeaveColorUnchanged instead fixes it but it
produces some spurious output:

[Bug 1245248] [NEW] starting video with skype and flgrx drivers crashes the whole X server

2013-10-27 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

I know I shouldn't complain about closed-source proprietary trash, but
perhaps the X server could be a bit more resilient.

Almost every time I activate the webcam in skype (sometimes when someone
else activates it during a call), the whole X server crashes with:

It would be nice if Mozilla Messaging provided a convenient way to
crowd-fund specific features. Something simpler than kick-starter and
perhaps connected to bugzilla.

[Bug 1197838] [NEW] system locks/freezes up after some time idle

2013-07-04 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

After leaving the computer connected to an external monitor and
unattended a few minutes, the system locks up.

The only recourse is to reboot with Alt+SysRq+B.

Switching terminals or disconneting the external monitor does not work.

syslog/dmesg don't contain any interesting event before freezing up.
However, Xorg.log says:

[ 23368.997] [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until
existing events are processed.

[Bug 1004841] Re: Thunderbird Icon set is broken (ugly, black and white icons)

2013-07-01 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
I guess because for the mainstream users of Ubuntu, it works fine (that
is, you use unity and don't change any defaults in Thunderbird). And no
non-mainstream user is bothered enough to get involved in Ubuntu
development and submit a patch with an alternative. If someone modified
the Ubuntu package, created the alternative theme and enabled it by
default for Unity, and they were persistent and pro-active enough to get
the patch accepted by Ubuntu, then this will be fixed.

This is not a characteristic of Ubuntu, it is how free-software works:
either fix it yourself or convince someone (with nice words, arguments
or money) to do it for you or be lucky and patient enough so that
someone else will do it. If everybody takes the last option, then
nothing changes.

I download the original thunderbird from mozilla and extract omni.ja
from it. So far, it has worked fine this way but it is cumbersome. Even
if the ubuntu package included the original omni.ja in the package
somehow, that would be an improvement.

Actually, I am surprised so few people have complained about this.
Perhaps Thunderbird is not used so much (particularly in Kubuntu)? Or
people don't use the default theme?

[Bug 1171879] [NEW] screen turns off when idle and laptop freezes

Swithing to virtual terminals is not possible, and other actions seem

[Bug 1161826] Re: smarter handling of redirections and add --color option to override auto settings

2013-03-29 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
I like my approach (and git diff approach) more because it is the least
surprising:

$ diff | program > file

should produce a valid diff and

$ diff --color=yes | program > file

should produce a colored diff.

I expect that if GNU diff ever gets colored output, it will have this
behaviour (like grep and git diff do).

But I fully understand that changing the defaults once set is difficult.
Feel free to close this as wontfix.

[Bug 1161826] Re: smarter handling of redirections and add --color option to override auto settings

2013-03-29 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Anyway, if you don't like it, no offense taken. I will use my version,
and rebase it if I ever need a newer version. I just found it so useful
that I cannot imagine not having the automatic pager. Perhaps someone
else will find this page useful too, so I upload the whole script here.

[Bug 1161826] Re: smarter handling of redirections and add --color option to override auto settings

2013-03-29 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
In my version, 'svn diff | colordiff" will work exactly as git diff
"pager + colors" and "svn diff | colordiff | grep -v "^Only" >
patch.diff" will do the right thing also.

In fact, one can do:

alias svndiff='svn diff | colordiff'

and get the git behaviour with correct handling of pipes.

[Bug 1161826] Re: smarter handling of redirections and add --color option to override auto settings

2013-03-29 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Hi davee,

I see you added an option --color, but the defaults for --color=auto are
different from my patch. In the latest version:

$ diff -aur | grep -v "^Only" > file.diff

produces a broken patch, while my version does the right thing.

Also, my version will page automatically with less with colors, like git
diff does.

[Bug 1161826] [NEW] smarter handling of redirections

2013-03-29 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

If diff is aliased to colordiff as suggested, then:

$ diff -aur | grep -v "^Only" > file.diff

produces a broken patch.

colordiff should be as smart as "git diff", that is, if the output is a
tty, then use a pager and color, if not, then don't use color.

The attached patch does this.

Several improvements are possible:

1) Use "less -r" by default and if that fails just warn and keep STDOUT as-is.
2) Add an option like in grep:

--color[=WHEN],
  --colour[=WHEN]   use markers to highlight the matching strings;
WHEN is `always', `never', or `auto'
(the default is 'auto')

3) Integrate colordiff in GNU diff re-using the code used in grep.

[Bug 1004841] Re: Thunderbird Icon set is broken (ugly, black and white icons)

2013-01-10 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
I offer myself to fix a GCC bug to the best of my possibilities if
someone in return manages to fix this annoying issue. My ideal fix would
be to offer the default Thunderbird icon set as an extra theme, and that
updating Thunderbird does not reset the theme to the Ubuntu's default.

Any takers?

[Bug 1082394] Re: krunner freezes

2012-11-26 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Hi Harald,

I think it is a problem with skype's launcher (or more precisely, with
the X-DBUS settings). If I close skype, krunner unlocks and says:

KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/skype'

but I can perfectly launch that file from the command-line.

Moreover, if I delete the line:

X-DBUS-StartupType=unique

krunner does not lock up.

The only work-around I found is to kill it completely and restart. Then,
it works fine.

[Bug 153606] Re: a2ps does not suport input file using utf-8 encoding

2012-11-13 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
A possible replacement of a2ps?
http://developer.berlios.de/projects/u2ps

However, it doesn't seem to be packaged in Debian/Ubuntu, and it
requires adding some extra Perl libraries. The installer doesn't work
out-of-the-box.

paps does not support most features of a2ps. It cannot be used as a
drop-in replacement.

gnome-a2ps pulls too many gnome libraries. (gvfs? libbonobo? wtf!)

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: a2ps

  "a2ps --encoding=NAME" supports ASCII, EUC-JP, HPRoman, IBM-CP437, IBM-
  CP850, ISO-8859-1 to -15, JOI8, MS-CP1250 and Macintosh.

But utf-8, the default text file encoding for ubuntu, is neither the
  default nor even supported.
+
+ WORKAROUNDS:
+
+ * use iconv or recode to convert to a supported encoding:
+
+ recode UTF-8..Latin-1 | a2ps

[Bug 949949] Re: KDE support for firefox stopped working in 12.04

2012-11-10 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Is there a specific bug about the lack of MIME types information in
Kubuntu Firefox?

It is absurd that PDFs downloaded with Firefox cannot be opened directly
by Okular, the dialog to choose a helper application is ugly and useless
and it drops you into the filesystem, without any clear hint of what to
do next or where to find the programs. See:
http://www.kubuntuforums.net/archive/index.php/t-58564.html

[Bug 1073071] [NEW] vlc cannot disable power management features

2012-10-30 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

When playing a video in VLC in Kubuntu, the power management dims and
eventually turns off the screen, even when connected on AC power. This
is with default settings.

VLC has an option to "Inhibit power management daemon during playback",
which is one by default.

According to VLC developers, KDE4 broke xdg-utils compatibility:
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/5957

[Bug 1071033] [NEW] magnet links don't work

2012-10-24 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
Public bug reported:

Simple. Magnet links don't work. This is a well-known problem. Fixes are
available:

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Kubuntu_Quantal_Internet#Set_Firefox_to_use_KTorrent_for_magnet_links

Why not make it work out of the box?

Example:

magnet:?xt=urn:ed2k:31D6CFE0D16AE931B73C59D7E0C089C0&xl=0&dn=zero_len.fil&xt=urn:bitprint:3I42H3S6NNFQ2MSVX7XZKYAYSCX5QBYJ.LWPNACQDBZRYXW3VHJVCJ64QBZNGHOHHHZWCLNQ&xt=urn:md5:D41D8CD98F00B204E9800998ECF8427E

It works out of the box with Chromium.

[Bug 1069378] Re: specify sizes in human readable format (e.g., 1K 234M 2G)

2012-10-21 Thread Manuel López-Ibáñez
I don't see there how to report bugs in the installer. The installer
does not have any "Submit feedback.." "Report a bug..." option.

** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
