[Bug 1768565] Re: pdfsam crashes at launch on Bionic Beaver 18.04 LTS

2018-11-25 Thread Maraschin
I'm sorry but say that the bug is fixed if you change the default version of
java is misleading.
Everyone is migrating to 11, we may have other software that is using/depending
on 11 and we want to move on, java 8 is soon EOF.

Java 8 EOL (end-of-life) are:
- January 2019 for Oracle (commercial)
- December 2020 for Oracle (non-commercial)
- At Least September 2023 for AdoptOpenJDK

[Bug 1753577] [NEW] 18.04 After update to latest kernel nvidia will not recognize all monitors, only one

2018-03-05 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

uname -a
Linux barbaridade 4.15.0-10-generic #11-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 13 18:23:35 UTC 2018
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
nvidia-390

I've a setup with 3 monitors which were working fine until I updated ubuntu
18.04 with the latest kernel. After that Nvidia will recognize only one monitor.
If I reboot the computer on windows it works fine.

[Bug 1741255] Re: Can't select keyboard type during installation

2018-02-20 Thread Maraschin
I tried 17.10.1-server-amd64 today and the problem still there.
I'm not able to select / change the keyboard during the installation!
Which results in the wrong keyboard been set!

I tried bionic-live-server-amd64 daily: 20180220 and I can select the keyboard
but the partition doesn't scan the disks (do not show any of the existing
partitions) and it is missing options like encryption and lvm.

I managed access /dev via initramsf and the UUID from the installation
doesn't match the ones listed in /dev/disk/by-uuid/...

Should this happen???
I will try to do a new installation to see if it happens again.

[Bug 1750645] [NEW] 18.04 Server installation missing partition options

2018-02-20 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

Boot image: 20180220
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily-live/

I tried to install the ubuntu-server daily live today and when presented
with the partition program I noticed that almost all the interesting
features are gone!

There is no way to select encryption and lvm to start with.

It doesn't scan the disks, basically if you have already any partition
on any disk it will not show you anything. Just an option to create a
new partition.

This is really BAD!

I've a machine with 3 HDs on which I would like to:
- full encrypt all of them!
- be able to use lvm to have swap and any number of partition on any disk
- use ext 2 for /boot (which is not encrypted)

At least I was able to configure the keyboard correct this time.
By the way, the new install interface is terrible! The older one was a lot user
friendly and did the work, this doesn't even look good.

[Bug 1743447] Re: Can't unlock an encrypted disk when installting new ubuntu

2018-02-20 Thread Maraschin
I tried the daily desktop 18.04 2018-02-19 yesterday and it does work
now. I am able to unlock the encrypted disk and do a normal installation
...

But after the installation was completed the system will not be able to
identify the disks and prompt for the encryption keys. I then try to
boot with safe mode...

Here the output:
Begin: waiting for root file system...
Begin: Running /scripts/local-block ...
done.
done.
Gave up waiting for root file system devices. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules: is /dev)
ALERT! UUID=(long number here ...) doe not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.27.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.27.2-2ubuntu3) built-in shell (ssh)
Enter 'help' for a list of build-in commands.

(initramsf) [ 64.614480] usb 2-1.8.3: USB diconnect, device number 7

And here the systems HALT, I'm not able to do anything... not even enter
the help command :-/

[Bug 1722222] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 Desktop installation: LVM missing on alternative partitioning

2018-01-23 Thread Maraschin
I think you miss-understood me.
How can I install lvm2 if I can't finish the installation?

The installation it-self is the problem. it doesn't allow me to manually
configure the disks in the way I want it!

Example with 3 disks:
- disk 1: windows and /boot
- disk 2: /
- disk 3: /home and swap

Requirements:
- dual boot
- full encrypted disks
- lvm to be able to set /home and swap in the same disk

* It would be the same issue if there was one or 2 disks!
Example, one disk with 3 partitions:
- windows
- /boot
- Encrypted partition
  - LVM:
- /
- swap

[Bug 1743447] [NEW] Can't unlock an encrypted disk when installting new ubuntu

2018-01-15 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

I can't unlock an encrypted disk neither using app disks or sudo cryptsetup
luksOpen when doing a new ubuntu installation...
I tried on Ubuntu daily 18.04 LTS (2018-01-15) and ubuntu 17.10

I'm trying to do a new installation of ubuntu, but I want to use encrypted
disks and a dual boot for windows.
Basically I can't use the normal installation. To accomplish that I created the
encrypted disks, lvm and partitions using ubuntu-server. Since 17.10 and 18.04
both have some kind of bug that when you reboot the system the keyboard
defaults to US, I can't enter the password, my keyboard is Swedish with English
as language and I use characters that do not exist in the US keyboard.

So, I started the ubuntu desktop installation, ran the try mode, select
the appropriate keyboard and tried to unlock the partitions.

On both cases it just hang without report any error.
With app "disks" I can select the cancel button but cryptsetup will hang
forever, not even control-c helps.
I than try start the normal installation:
- with ubuntu 18.04 (daily 2018-01-15), the installation stops after I select
the language and press continue... (it just hangs there!)

[Bug 997020] Re: apport-collect does not work on headless servers

2018-01-09 Thread Maraschin
I just run on another use case for this:

A kernel upgrade made gnome unable to start, apport-collect needs to have a
confirmation from a browser but since I can't start a normal desktop, I can't
send the report.
The workaround using w3m may work but than after that I need to set back to
firefox, not the easiest way. We could improve here a lot!

[Bug 1741255] [NEW] Can't select keyboard type during installation

2018-01-04 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

USE CASE:
- Several users around the world have local keyboards that are very different
from US keyboards but still would like to use English as the default language,
or any other combination of language and keyboard. It is important to permit
the keyboard to be changed independent of the language selected!

Issue:
- the installation process do not allow the user to select a different keyboard.

Tested versions:
- 18.04 daily (2018-01-01) server - Not working
- 17.10 server - Not working

Steps to Replicate:
- Boot the installation ("pre-installation")
- Select English and language and the appropriate keyboard pressing F3 (in my
case was Swedish)
- Select install new Ubuntu server (The "installation")
- select English as language
- try to select another keyboard (like Swedish, Brazilian, etc) during the
installation process
Problem: there is no way to do it in the installation!
If i try to go back in the menu to set the keyboard, it will not allow me to
change it!

Consequences:
- Keyboard is wrongly set
- In case a user uses disk encryption, (s)he may not be able to enter the
password after reboot making the all installation useless.
  - Bug #174101 may be a consequence of this problem - in this scenario it is
even worse since it will not work even if the combination of language and
keyboard suppose to be correct (In case it is something else than English/US)

** Affects: install-package (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1741012] [NEW] Problem with all new installations of ubuntu when keyboard is not US and using full encrypted disk(s)

2018-01-03 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

Trying to accomplish:
- new Ubuntu installation (I've tried with 17.10, daily 18.04 [latest tried was
2018-01-01], server and desktop)
- using English and a Swedish keyboard / or just trying to install it as
Swedish (including Swedish keyboard)
- using full disk encryption and characters not in the US keyboard

Problem:
After the installation is completed and the machine is rebooted the user should
enter the password for the full disk encryption.
The problem is that the keyboard is set to US (there is no way to change it),
so it is impossible to enter the password.
This is even true when installing it as language Swedish.

More problems:
- Another issue I encountered in the installation is that it will not allow me
to set the keyboard.

Example: if I try to install language = English, I can't select a
Swedish keyboard (server installation). I try to go back on the menu but
it jumps direct to disk partition using a default value (US keyboard).

- 18.04 Desktop, the installation doesn't work at all. It doesn't even start
... it just hangs...
I run TRY Ubuntu, set the keyboard = Swedish and clicked start
installation...
No errors reported. The screen still functional and I'm able to start other
programs but the installation just hangs ...

- 18.04 and 17.10 server installation: I start selecting English and
pressing F3 to change keyboard to Swedish. The installation goes on, I'm
NOT allowed to change keyboard during the installation (which in my
opinion is WRONG), and the installation uses US as the default keyboard.

- - 18.04 and 17.10 server installation: I select Swedish as language
and keyboard as Swedish, start the installation all goes OK. When the
system boots I'm not able to enter the password for the encrypted disks
because the keyboard is set to US (even when installing as Swedish for
language). I'm not allowed to change keyboard during the installation
process as well.

USE CASE:
- Several users around the world have local keyboards that are very different
from US keyboards but still would like to use English as the default language.
it is important to permit the keyboard to be changed independent of the
language selected!

[Bug 1738837] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)

2017-12-18 Thread Maraschin
I've managed to install it using 17.10 server but when I reboot I get the same
error.
I'm having another problem, any version I try to install 16.04, 17.10, 18.04...
DO NOT LET ME select the keyboard! My problem is that I'm trying to install
English language on a computer with Swedish keyboard. I tried to install
Swedish but after reboot it goes to English and I can't enter the encryption
key...

I tried Bionic Beaver server, I can't select the option to manually set the
partitions!
I can't use full disk! I've a windows disk with /boot partition and I want to
encrypt the Ubuntu disk ...

I will try Bionic Beaver desktop now...

[Bug 1706859] Re: Auto-selected keyboard layout no longer matches chosen region on "Where are you" page

2017-12-18 Thread Maraschin
1. I installed 17.10 server today
2. I use English for language
3. and Swedish as the keyboard (select it with F3 before start the installation)
4. installation goes OK but it doesn't let me select the keyboard when
installing, it seems to use the locale - which in this case will be US for the
keyboard.
5. I tried to go back in the installation to select another keyboard but it
will not allow me
6. After reboot I can't enter the encryption key since it has characters that
doesn't exist in the US keyboard

[Bug 1722222] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.10 Desktop installation: LVM missing on alternative partitioning

2017-10-09 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to install 17.10 with dual boot with disk encryption and add
lvm.

The issue is that if I do not want to erase the disk, I will not be able
to get the LVM option at all.

After create the encrypted partition I do not have the option to use LVM (not
even before).
I want to be able to create a swap and a root partition using lvm within the
encrypted volume but there is no such option.

And I can't remove the windows partition, otherwise I can't upgrade the
computer bios and firmware.

[Bug 1721988] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 full disk encryption + Nvidia drivers not booting

I've just updated it to nvidia-387 and it still the same problem.
By the way, I've installed ubuntu-gnome-desktop before I did install nvidia

Another thing: when I start the computer I'm not able to see grub
options to decide how to boot, I only can see it after I press control +
alt + delete and reboot the computer, than it shows up.

[Bug 1721988] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.10 full disk encryption + Nvidia drivers not booting

2017-10-07 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

I've installed ubuntu 17.10 with full disk encryption and then installed
the nvidia drivers (v 384). when I boot the computer I will get the
graphics interface to enter the encryption key but the system will stop
to work, like it has hang. Basically I'm not able to enter the password!

I've to restart in safe mode to be able to enter the password for the
encryption, after that I can just resume the boot and all works.

There seems to be some issues with the initial boot screen and nvidia
drivers... I'm not able to press any combination of Control+Alt+Fx key
to get any extra info about what is going on (not able to get any text
mode).

It's 2017 and this "feature" still present!
Everyone has a smartphone and when we want to import our pictures we always get
into this situation...

Could someone at least create a window in shotwell with instructions
about what todo, may be even a button that unmounts or do some action to
make it to work...

I still get it on daily 2015-10-09, it seems they forgot to add -F to
the command so it will not prompt if you want to format or not... :-/ It
should be quite easy to fix than...

[Bug 1167220] Re: NO Keyboard selection when on english

2013-04-15 Thread Maraschin
I did choose install ubuntu.
After I select language ENGLISH, I do not get any clear screen about selecting
a keyboard layout.
after while I did noticed that there is a very small keyboard icon on top of
the screen on the right side, there I could change the keyboard to something
else, but what I mean is that this is not intuitive and a lot of users may miss
it!

This is a really problem when you want to encrypt a disc, you may end up
entering keys that do not match you keyboard layout ...

[Bug 1167246] [NEW] Can NOT activate existing encrypted partition

2013-04-10 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 13.04 daily April 7

There is no way I can activate an already existing encrypted partition.

Case:
i already have ubuntu installed and I would like to install a new version, in
this case 13.04
But I do not want to loose my /data partition which has several TB of data and
is encrypted.
I would like just to mount it.

As well in the same encrypted partition I use LVM with the / and swap

[Bug 1167220] [NEW] NO Keyboard selection when on english

2013-04-10 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 13.04 daily April 7

When starting a new ubuntu installation and set the language to English, there
will be no questions about keyboard layout.
i think to have to go to an icon above to change the keyboard layout is not
intuitive and should be part of the selection process instead. You could always
accept the default values.

I particularly use English as the language but I'm on a computer that has a
Swedish keyboard most of the time. Some times I do have to use Brazilian
keyboards...
It may seems a corner case but there are several people that uses English as
the default language and a NOT English keyboard!

Make it intuitive, stop to complicate things! Stop to assume!

[Bug 1167215] [NEW] NO LVM option available when installing

2013-04-10 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

Using 13.04 daily (April 7)

If I try to use Something else in the partition when installing ubuntu, I've 3
options:
- Keep windows
- erase everything and install ubuntu (which has 2 boxes with encryption and
lvm)
- somthing else.

Since I want to keep windows and use encryption and lvm, I selected this one.
to my surprise, LVM is not available here. WHY

I can select a partition to be encrypted but I can't select it than to
use LVM, LVM is not even available when selecting something else...

WHY SOME CLEVER developers have REMOVED our beloved alternate disk
At least I would have ubuntu running as I WANT NOT as someone else wants!
Stop to mess with things that works!

[Bug 903422] Re: Mount / Provide access to Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) MTP devices

2012-05-16 Thread Maraschin

"Unable to open the Samsung GT-P7310/P7510/N7000/I9100/Galaxy Tab

The same problem with Samsung Galaxy SII...

The best would be to be able to access it using Nautilus since it is not
only photos and music, there are videos, ebooks and any other type of
file that we may want to transfer between the devices!

[Bug 740818] Re: Can't set Keyboard layout at installation and later on

2012-02-21 Thread Maraschin
YES! In my case the problem starts after install ati drivers.
But the drivers are installed by ubuntu via the hardware drivers option. I did
not download and install the drivers via AMD site, I did all of it through the
ubuntu repository...
I would guess the bug is just wrongly set to gnome-settings but IT DOES EXIST!
If it is due to the drivers or the combination of gnome, grub, etc that is
another thing...

If we should not report this bug here were should we report it???

[Bug 860892] Re: Discrete Graphics not working

2011-12-19 Thread Maraschin
Hi, I don't think you should close this bug (problem)!

First of all I don't think you have even read the problem, if you read you will
know that what Bryce wrote first makes no sense with the problem/bug in
question!
About installing proprietary driver or not, I don't think this is an issue, In
my case I do have an ATI and I think it would be a lot better to use the
proprietary driver, if it worked... but it does not and it may be because the
second card still enabled.

Later he adds:
"No, there is no method supported in Ubuntu for switching between the two (nor
any near-term plans to support switching)."

So, It seems NO ONE will/want to fix this... So the PROBLEM STILL THERE!
It is just that no one is planning to do anything about it!

The problem is in ALL new notebooks and computers that have a discrete video
card and a more advanced video card in it.
Ubuntu has no decent way to support this, we may have some work around but they
are dirty!

And than there are all the related side effects like:
- battery consumption (it could be a lot less if I could switch between the two
video cards)
- problems with video drivers, I can't get the ATI to work!

[Bug 893592] [NEW] 12.04 Server, keymap will not configure

2011-11-22 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

I just download 12.04 server, date 2011-11-22 and try to install it in a
VM.

The first problem I got was with the keyboard set, I did set the
keyboard as Swedish before start the installation but it will start with
American English. FYI: The language was set to English.

The interesting thing is that I do get this problem almost every time I try to
test a future new release... it keeps coming back...
Come on guys, you must have people there that uses English as language and some
other keyboard layout like Swedish, German, Portuguese, etc.

Than I try to continuous the installation but it failed when I try to select
Open SSH and Apache Tomcat to be installed...
I try to install it again and I did not select any packages to be installed
this time, it did work and it finished the installation.

After i reboot the system the keyboard was correct set.

[Bug 868294] [NEW] multiarch - Update broke 64bit dependencies

2011-10-05 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

After run the latest update applications that did depend on libstdc++.so.6 stop
to work complaining that the shared library couldn't be open (no such file or
directory). But if I try to instal it it says:
libstdc++6 is already the newest version.

It seems that the cause is related to multiarch support.
First I noticed that flash stop to work and than Android sdk wouldn't work as
well saying that the libstdc++.so.6 wasn't a valid 64 bit application (before I
did restart the computer, now it says it doesn't exist). When I try to
reinstall flash i notice that it would try to install the 32 bits version and
that libstdc++.so.6 was one of them...

I guess the multiarch is not really tested properly and it is breaking things
that were working fine before, like flash and android sdk ...
I try to edit the file /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/multiarch and remove the
foreign-architecture i386 entry but I still will have the same problem...

so i enabled the i386 again and ran:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall flashplugin-installer
Which did install the libstdc++.so.6 i386 and android sdk is working again ...
I will have to restart the browser to check about flash...

Well, my guess is that the update broke the links...

[Bug 860884] [NEW] Try to open an already opened app on a different workspace will get you back to the first workspace

2011-09-27 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

If you open a terminal or nautilus on one workspace and than go to
another workspace and try to open the same application again (like a
terminal), it will take you back to the first workspace...

This may be a design decision but to me this is a BUG, what is the point to
change workspace and than have to go to another workspace to be able to open an
application that you want to have in the second or 3rd or 4th workspace?!
If you run apps on a desktop and you decide to have multiple workspaces, you
want multiple copies of the same application in different workspaces, otherwise
WHY to have workspaces???

It is a lot more work to have to go back between workspaces just to be able to
open an application that you already have running... and you may say but you
already have it open... YES!!! BUT I WANT A NEW ONE!!! And I want it in ANOTHER
workspace... like I want to have a terminal window in each workspace or I want
a few nautilus open in one workspace and a new one in another...
WHY?! Because it is a DESKTOP, and I want to be able to do things in
parallel... like copy files in one workspace, check documents in another,
program in a 3rd and so on...
And I do this every day!!!

it may be better than just remove workspaces...

[Bug 850391] Re: Grub keyboard default to us after update

[Bug 860865] [NEW] ATI Proprietary drivers make grub keyboard work as US only

2011-09-27 Thread Maraschin
Public bug reported:

I've install alpha 2 a few times and every time I install the ATI proprietary
drivers using the system center / Hardware / additional drivers and try to
boot, grub will be using the keyboard layout as US even if I've some other
keyboard layout set.
The configuration is correct within linux, once I managed to get the password
for the encryption correct, it will start as it should be, with the keyboard
layout I've set in the installation.

In my case I've set the keyboard = SWEDISH, if I do boot without install
the proprietary ATI drivers provided by additional drivers, it works
properly. If I install it, IT DOES NOT work as it was configured but it
assumes the USA keyboard layout instead, until ubuntu starts. (this is a
problem to me and others that use encryption since we may use characters
that do not exist in the american keyboard layout).

I found out that if I do install the proprietary ATI driver myself, by
downloading it from ATi and building it myself, it will not have the
same effect and the keyboard layout will work as set. I guess the
problem is within the packages provided by the repository and there may
be some sets there that are not generic enough ...

I can repeat this with older versions of 11.10 (I'd the same problem
with ALPHA 1 and ALPHA 3 ...)

I've reported it before:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/850391

But the real problem is within the ATI proprietary drivers that are provided by
the ubuntu repository...

[Bug 740818] Re: Can't set Keyboard layout at installation and later on

2011-09-27 Thread Maraschin
I just installed 11.10 Beta 2 and it worked fine.
After I did a full update it was still working fine, but when I installed AMD
proprietary drivers, from Hardware additional drivers and restarted, the
problem started again.
I'm not sure but it may be something related there, after install it and reboot
the keyboard changed to US when I would type the encryption password...

I did than boot with the old kernel version which did not have the drive
set and I could lggin again but it will not work with the 3.0.12 and
AMD/ATI driver...

[Bug 850391] Re: Grub keyboard default to us after update

2011-09-15 Thread Maraschin
By the way, there was a problem in Alpha 2 installation which couldn't
set a combination of language/keyboard that wasn't expected. Like
English language (locale) with a Swedish or German keyboard. This was
resolved with Alpha 3 (alpha 1 was working as well). After I did a full
update (I did not reinstall the system), the problem got back.

I'm not sure if this will still be valid after I do login into the system,
since I can't enter the encryption password.
I did boot with the alpha 3 DVD and could mount the encrypted disc but I've no
idea where to try to look for a fix since /etc/default/keyboard is correctly
set.

At boot time, I did edit grub configuration to add:

set lang=sv_SE

but I still get the american keyboard.

Hello, the BUG is back!

I did a full update yesterday (12/Sept/2011) and the keyboard got disconfigured

I use characters that do not exist in the american keyboard so now I can't even

Very interesting... it stop to work again... just after I entered the

It may be related with the filter. I did click in more apps and than set
games as filters. After that I did closed the search and clicked in the
dash home again and try to do a search but nothing would show up. I try
to set filter ALL but still nothing shows up... so yes it seems there is
a bug there...

Unity was working fine this morning but when I started the computer this
afternoon it can't find any application that I could find before! I'm not sure
how to report this since I did not change anything in the system and it was

I will try to restart ubuntu to see if it starts to work but that is too much
Windows to my taste.
I'm running 11.10 with all the latest updates...

Not even terminal will show up in the search!
I've installed a few games and if I try to filter just by games, without enter

If the restart is the solution I will be very disappointed! I do not
want to go back to Windows or windows like experience...
