[Bug 647886] Re: maverick on eeepc 1005ha: sound does not work at all

2010-09-30 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Its likely that on my device the sound chip is broken because the sound
does not even work with (preinstalled) Win7 and sound drivers from
asus.com (Win cannot find any sound device)

So this bug may be bogus. I'll report back after the device has been
inspected by the asus support staff.

[Bug 581941] Re: statd does not start automatically when needed nor can be forced to start on boot

2010-05-21 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Hi Steve,

sorry, I did not notice that you pass -L to statd.

I now removed the -L option from statd as well and it still is running
after boot.

After reverting back to original state (exec sm-notify in pre-start and
statd -L) the log says:

init: statd pre-start process (714) terminated with status 1

@Dave: How did you tweak sm-notify to get more debug? I added -d to its
start but did not get any messages about Cannot create ... or
something.

After changing start on to
start on (started portmap and local-filesystems)

it is working here as well but I do not have /var on a separate FS on
that machine but / maybe still is mounted ro before local-filesystems?

But why do you start sm-notify manually and then use statd -L instead of
just starting statd without -L ?

[Bug 581941] Re: statd does not start automatically when needed nor can be forced to start on boot

2010-05-19 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Hi Steve,

its failing in pre-start:

init: statd pre-start process (712) terminated with status 1

Thats the only line about it in boot.log with --verbose

service portmap is running after boot, so I tried to comment out the
exec sm-notify line.

After that statd service is runng after reboot.

So why is sm-notify failing here? Is it really required to exec it in
this place?

AFAIK sm-notify will be run by statd automatically when it starts up, so
IMO the exec sm-notify is superfluous anyway.

The sm-notify man page says:
When rpc.statd is started it will typically started sm-notify but this is
configurable.

and from statd man page:

-L, --no-notify
Prevents rpc.statd from running the sm-notify command when it
starts up, preserving the existing NSM state number and monitor list.

Note: the sm-notify command contains a check to ensure it runs
only once after each system reboot. This prevents spurious reboot
notification if
rpc.statd restarts without the -L option.

-Marc

[Bug 581941] [NEW] statd does not start automatically when needed nor can be forced to start on boot

2010-05-17 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Public bug reported:

I have some user-mountable nfs entries in my /etc/fstab like this:

myserver:/srv/nfs/images /mnt/images nfs
defaults,user,noauto,intr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768 0 0

for this to work, statd (from nfs-common) needs to be running, but it is
not started at system startup

The scripts claim that it will be started

According to /etc/init/statd.conf rpc.statd should be started either if
some NFS filesystem will be mounted or if NEED_STATD is not no

When a user tries to mount a NFS share, statd will not be started:

u...@ubuntu:~$ mount /mnt/images
mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.
u...@ubuntu:~$

And setting NEED_STATD to yes in /etc/default/nfs-common will NOT start
statd on system startup...

I also tried a workaround: Putting @reboot service start statd into a system
cronjob which also does NOT work...

However, starting it as root manually works, and nfs mounts are working
afterwards

[Bug 279816] Re: 4G FC arrays don't work properly with qla2xxx driver

2009-04-27 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
I want to confirm that we had our SAN-Storage connected to the ubuntu servers
not working properly with
linux-image-2.6.24-23-server or earlier versions (from hardy)

Applying the mentioned patch [1] resolves the issues and makes
everything work fine again.

Our issues were: There always were several FC paths not being visible to the
host system.
Now we do see all four FC paths on all LUNs as expected.
Storage is EMC Clariion (CX700) with McData and Brocade Fabrics.

Please apply the mentioned patch to the qla2xxx driver. Thanks!

[Bug 327597] [NEW] nofile limit cannot be increased, only decreased

2009-02-10 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Public bug reported:

Setting the maximum number of open files via pam's
/etc/security/limits.conf (setting nofile) does only work for values
less than 1024, not above

This seems to work on Gentoo, Red Hat and SuSE quite well so I started
to look why it does not in ubuntu.

I found out that a patch applied durcing build is causing this:

in
  debian/patches-applied/027_pam_limits_better_init_allow_explicit_root

you find the following on line 59:

+   pl-limits[i].limit.rlim_max = 1024;

which seems to set the maximum for RLIMIT_NOFILE to 1024 which IMO is
non-sense.

We have many servers that have it set to 65536 for big applications.
If I increase this rlim_max value, the default is still 1024 but I can rise it
to limit.rlim_max -1

Please fix this by setting a reasonable value here. The kernel maximum is 2^20
= 1024*1024 = 1048576
(See sysctl fs.nr_open or cat /proc/sys/fs/nr_open)

So I suggest setting it to 1024*1024 instead of 1024 value to not have a
synthetic limit here

See attached patch for the patch which fixes it.

Works!

I can confirm that those two issues are fixed now, thanks Saïvann

I noticed a typo in the changelog: You wrote r17543 instead of r17544

So there is only one issue left I notice here: gnucash asks the user for
the bank HBCI certificate everytime gnucash is closed and started again.
But I don't know if this behavior is intended or not.

2008-09-23 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 269725 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/269725

Hi Saïvann,

I am sorry, but I think this is NOT a duplicate of bug 269725 ... the
problem described in bug 269725 is something totally different that I
had seen too.

This bug here is about a communication issue between aqbanking and
gnucash which made gnucash always think there has been an error after a
banking transaction when it succeeded in some cases. This has been fixed
with the svn-diff I told you.

Now bug 269725 is about a message the informs the user about an
additonal information in the hbci-response which is handled in a
confusing and misleading way by gnucash. The bugreport describes exactly
what I saw too and what is indeed confusing and annoying.

[Bug 268434] [NEW] Screen Resolution is not being restored after relogin

2008-09-10 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Public bug reported:

K-Menu - System settings - Display - Size Orientation

You can set a screen resolution here which works fine, but on re-login
to KDE the set resolution is not being restored.

Then if you start the Config again it will load the settings immediately

original size.

This way the this settings dialog/applet is completely useless.

[Bug 255484] [NEW] no console blank time setting possible anymore

2008-08-06 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Public bug reported:

/etc/init.d/console-screen.sh exits immediatly if setupcon is present.

The comment there says that in this case console-setup is superseeding
this script.

However: console-setup does not set any setterm related options like
console blanking, so setting BLANK_TIME in /etc/console-tools/config for
example is not working anymore and there is no such setting in /etc
/console-setup/*

I think either console-setup has to be extended to set console timeout
values to fix this or the console-screen.sh has be changed so that it
will not exit immediatly but change settings of things that console-
setup does not do.

[Bug 239785] Re: kernel lacks drbd module

The module is present in all ubuntu kernels but the virtual kernel.

So I assume it has been removed for no obvious reason and because of

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that its the goal of the virtual
kernel to strip unneeded hardware drivers and add paravirtualizsation
things like VMI and not to remove normal features from the kernel...

[Bug 226125] [NEW] conflict between pm-utils's sleep.d/90clock and ntpdate's if-up.d/ntpdate

2008-05-03 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Public bug reported:

Restarting NTP more than once at the same time leaves ntpd in a broken
state where it will not set system time but is still running.

Now the ntpdate package stops ntpd, runs ntpdate, then restarts ntpd everytime
an interface mentioned in /etc/network/interfaces comes up via
/etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate

pm-utils restarts ntpd on every resume from a suspend to reset system
clock to the correct time by restarting ntpd via /usr/lib/pm-
utils/sleep.d/90clock

This happens at the same time (or mostly at the same time) and makes
ntpd being in a broken state.

To solve this issue I can imagin several solutions:
 * one of these packages does not restart ntpd anymore
 * introduce some sort of central instance that has to be triggered to do the
job tha keeps track of not doing it more often than needed
 * introduce some locking mechanism in the ntp init script

what do you think?

[Bug 225230] [NEW] wrong quirks set for Thinkpad T61 with nvidia video

2008-05-01 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal-info

Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04
hal-info: 20080317+git20080318-1ubuntu4

Hi,

after Upgrade to hardy resume from suspend2ram did not work anymore on my
Lenovo Thinkpad T61.
(NVIDIA Graphics chip 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation
Quadro NVS 140M (rev a1))

It does not work when I use any GUI to go into s2ram that uses HAL.

Entering just pm-suspend as root from an xterm it works perfectly. So I do
not need any quirks here.
However hal has set two quirks here:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lshal|grep quirk
  power_management.quirk.s3_bios = true  (bool)
  power_management.quirk.vbemode_restore = true  (bool)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

now after setting these values back to false s2ram will resume fine:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# hal-set-property --udi
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer --key power_management.quirk.s3_bios
--bool false
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# hal-set-property --udi
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer --key
power_management.quirk.vbemode_restore --bool false
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# lshal | grep quirk
  power_management.quirk.s3_bios = false  (bool)
  power_management.quirk.vbemode_restore = false  (bool)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#

So these to quirks must not be set for my hardware in
fdi/information/10freedesktop/20-video-quirk-pm-lenovo.fdi

What information do you need about my hardware to fix this in the hal-
info package?

Please tell me if you need more information. I will attach the computer
part from lshal and lspci -vvv output.

[Bug 96788] Re: ntp doesn't work after suspend / resume

2008-04-30 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
This problem still exists in hardy and I think I have some more
information about it:

What I have observed is, that ntpd gets restarted several times on every resume
and also on system boot:
It will be restarted for every interface in /etc/network/interfaces that is not
loopback by /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate

So /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate seems to be the problem or at least part
of the problem.

The 3.5.7 packages still have this bug.
There is no such problem with the OpenSUSE packages.

Could the buggy patch added to kubuntu packages simply be dropped?

Sounds good. Could you be a bit more precise please? I would fix this
then a build a new kdebase package.

Are you sure these patches are part of the kdebase package? I just apt-
get_source'd kdebase but cannot find patches named like the ones you
mentioned.

How did the lines you commented out look like?

Public bug reported:

I am using feisty on a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E8110 with Intel HDA

I tried all model=... settings listed on http://alsa.opensrc.org/Hda

Any hints?

[Bug 45842] Re: nfs shares not mounted at startup

My workaround until this nasty bug will be fixed is this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /etc/cron.d/mount_all_workaround
@reboot root mount -a
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

This lets cron do a mount -a one time after the machine has booted.
Works for me but for servers I would create another initscript that will do it
at the right time.

[Bug 99882] Re: disabling file locking does not work anymore

2007-04-11 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
I tried with and without nfs-common installed on the client.

nfs-common installed on the client:
OOo deadlocks forever at starttup (at least an hour or so)

nfs-common not installed on the client:
OOo waits some time at startup (some NFS timeout?), then opens the Document
read-only

The Server of course has nfs-common installed.

Again: The Server is an old Linux NFS-Server (Userspace) which did not change.
The last OOo packages for feisty (2.2.0rc2) still worked very well if I
disabled locking.

But now in the current packages, disabling locking has *no* effekt for
me which make Ooo unusable for me :-(

Would be great to have that fixed untl feisty release

Please tell me if xou need an further info, straces etc.

Cheers

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I have some files on on old NFS-Server which cannot be modified with the

[Bug 46225] Re: Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E4010

2007-03-17 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Hi Peter,

I still use the mentioned settings on my Laptop running Edgy.
I know that I needed to change settings to make it awake correctly after
suspend-to-ram.

Since then I only installed all those security patches and such. I did
not test with the original settings *now*, but my changed settings still
work fine here.

As this is my production machine its not possible for me right now to
test with feisty. Maybe I could upgrade to feisty prior to its release
in the next couple of days as I did with edgy, especially if it would
help you and especially if this would lead to better ACPI-support in
feisty. Please let me know.

Here is the output you requested:

[Bug 46225] Re: Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E4010

2006-12-11 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Hi again!

here is the updated Info for Edgy on my Laptop:

Fn+Mute / Fn+VolUp / Fn+VolDOwn now work out of the box now! Great!

But I think the following is still missing in /usr/share/acpi-
support/FUJITSU SIEMENS.config

LIFEBOOK E4010*)
ACPI_SLEEP=true
;;

Suspend-To-Ram: Does not work out of the Box anymore! :-(
But with the following settings in /etc/default/acpi-support it works like a
charm:
(I think the important thing is to disable POST_VIDEO and SAVE_VIDEO_PCI_STATE)

ACPI_SLEEP=true
ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=mem
MODULES=
MODULES_WHITELIST=
SAVE_VBE_STATE=true
VBESTATE=/var/lib/acpi-support/vbestate
POST_VIDEO=false
SAVE_VIDEO_PCI_STATE=false
USE_DPMS=false

[Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes in cryptsetup

2006-11-23 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
I just discovered one minor bug in my patch: the returncode-check is
somewhat useless now as it would check only the rc of the last
usplash_write command in case we have usplash running.

Here is an updated patch. (This patch is against the 1.0.4-8ubuntu1
package from feisty that I backported to edgy...)

I tested it on edgy with usplash enabled and usplash disabled, with
correct passphrase and three times wrong passphrase entered.

What looks a bit odd: entering the wrong passphrase three times with
usplash prints out many asterisks... and while entering the passphrase
there are no asterisks shown.. so I guess this is an issue with usplash
itself.

For John Doe user it might be good if he sees those while typing the
passphrase. Somewhat cosmetic, but for the records.

[Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes in cryptsetup

2006-11-23 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
As I mentioned here [1] this patch was for the latest feisty version of
the package.

The diff against the original edgy script is mich bigger because there
changed some other things, too.

So for your convenience here is the patch against the current edgy
version. I guess it will work, but its not tested (because I tested with
a backported feisty version, which worked well)

[Bug 71154] kpdf cannot print this simple pdf properly, acroread can

2006-11-09 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpdf

This is the pdf:
http://www.produktinfo.conrad.com/datenblaetter/125000-14/125319-an-01-ml-Energy-Check_3000_de-en.pdf

Screen-viewing is fine.
When printing the page seems to be moved to the left by about 50% making only
the right half visible on the left side of the paper. Right side of the paper
is blank.
Printing with acroread on the same system is fine

Format: A4

I first tried to file that bug upstream, but the problem seems to be
some ubuntu-patch: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137121

[Bug 67440] edgy: usplash (?) blocks console after kdm shutdown

Switch to console using ctrl-alt-F1
Then do a /etc/init.d/kdm stop (maybe with gdm its the same...)
Now the screen is blank and the console is hidden. No maintenance or something
is possible anymore with that...

I guess its a problem with usplash?

[Bug 64531] apt-index-watcher uses way too much system ressources

2006-10-07 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt-index-watcher

Hi,

I upgraded my dapper do edgy. And now I was wondering what was making so
much trouble on the system now: On my ksysguard Graphs I can see lots
of nice/user cpu power used every few seconds and memory usage going up
and down every few seconds. Then I stoppen apt-index-watcher and
everything was OK again...

Perhaps it would be OK to just stop it doing its job that often? I guess
once an hour or twice a day would be enough... not?

[Bug 62613] Correct locale settings not set within KDE after installation

2006-09-27 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

Hi!

I just installed kubuntu knot-3 and installed it in german language. All
went fine so far.

But locale settings were not set to german within KDE, they were still
set to C.

I had to do the following to correct this:
(As I have a german desktop I try to translate the following back to english so
it might not 100% fit the wording on the original english desktop...)
K-Menu - system settings - Personal / Locale settings and Language -
(here Country or Region was set to C) - Central Europen - Germany

Now I have correct Time/Money/Language settings etc.

I think john doe will not correct/check that setting if he is new to the
system but instead will wonder why some system settings for money / time
/ numbers are a bit strange on his brandnew non-english linuxsystem...

I think this should be set according to the information entered at
install time.

Cheers
