I should make it clear that you need the kernel and the updated BIOS and
dock firmware at or beyond the versions I state. All 3 are needed.

[Bug 1889342] Re: Thunderbolt Dock Loses Monitors

2021-05-11 Thread markb
I'm cc'd on this thread from a while ago when I was looking around for
solutions to the many issues that plagued my XPS 9300 laptop and my
WD19TB dock (same combination as OP here). I can state that with any
Linux kernel 5.10.16 or later, and XPS BIOS 1.5.0, and dock firmware
01.00.15.01, all problems are fixed. I use that combo daily (although up
to kernel 5.12.2 now on Arch Linux) and never get any problem at all
which is surprising actually given how flaky it was beforehand. There
were a heap of i915 patches done in 5.10.15 which are required and then
1 more from 5.10.16 (Fix vswing programming for TBT) that is essential.

[Bug 1889342] Re: Thunderbolt Dock Loses Monitors

2020-11-02 Thread markb
I am the person who wrote the post on the Dell forums Vladimir is
referring to (and I have posted earlier here as above). Note that adding
i915.enable_dp_mst=0 doesn't just "sometimes resolve" the very frequent
blackouts, disconnects, and other problems I was seeing with my WD19TB
dock + XPS 13 9300, it completely resolves all of them! At least with my
configuration and versions as stated in that post
https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-13-9300-and-WD19TB-linux-
problem/m-p/7723066/highlight/true#M72030.

FYI the same lock screen bug and random dock disconnects etc occur on
Arch Linux as well. Using XPS 13 9300 + WD19TB + 2 by 2560x1440 DP
connected screens, GNOME 3.38, kernel 5.9, fwupd versions up to date.

Tim, in the process of doing that I discovered that this problem seems
to be not directly due to gnome-control-center so I won't raise a bug on
the crash. I will append a comment on my Ubuntu GNOME list post which

It says above that this bug was fixed in gnome-control-center

gnome-control-center 1:3.8.3-0ubuntu1~saucy2 and it still crashes as
soon as I try to change the background. I see the following segfault
each time in my syslog:

[Bug 1217196] Re: Keyboard shortcuts not working with GNOME 3.9.90

2013-10-20 Thread markb
Just as Matthew Butler in comment #30 above, I did a clean install of
Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 release today adding gnome3 and gnome3-next ppa's.
Now shortcuts don't work, in particular CTRL+ALT+T which is a pain. I
can add/change the shortcuts, and even add CTRL+ALT+T as a custom
terminal shortcut but it never works. Note gnome-shell is version
3.10.0.1-0ubuntu1~saucy0.1 so well beyond the version of the bug title.

Yolanda,

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I ran the suggested commands in the

sudo apt-get update

then

I installed Twonky media server per instructions at the following link:
http://www.dickson.me.uk/2010/11/02/installing-twonkyserver-on-ubuntu-lucid-lunx-10-04-1/

Even though the instructions were written for Ubuntu 10.04 I figured the
distro had not changed that much. Twonky was working for several weeks
prior to the update errors. The music files I am attempting to stream are
located on the 2nd internal hard drive.

I also attempted to change the way my 2nd internal hard drive is mounted.
>From mounting when a user clicked on it (me) in Home folder to mounting at
system boot (all users, all the time available). I still have not got that
figured out. The update problem seemed started occurring after I tried
changing the hard drive mount. I backed out of everything I did here.

I'm thinking I need to re-install Ubuntu 12.04. Unfortunately I'm better at
Windows than Linux, this seems way over my head to debug.

Any additional ideas?

Thanks. //mark breithart

[Bug 1175632] Re: transmission forgets path configuration and creates strange directories

2013-06-19 Thread markb
I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 x64 with stock transmission 2.77-0ubuntu1 and see
this bug. It is repeatable. Just rm -rf ~/.config/transmission to set
default settings, start transmission, e.g. set a "save to" location,
restart transmission, and you will see it forgets the setting (and
others). Like the OP here I have also been getting ~/en-AU.UTF-8 and
other hieroglyphic named folders in my home area. This is a bad bug
making transmission awful to use.

[Bug 1077546] Re: Gnome Shell sudo dialog said "Sorry, that didn't work. Please try again" when opening Synaptic

There appears to be an upstream gnome patch for this at

shell 3.6. Can we get this applied to Ubuntu?

I got there via bug #1167059 and then

[Bug 1167059] Re: Authentication dialog not working from gnome-shell search

2013-04-09 Thread markb
I'll just add that I updated a Ubuntu 12.10 x86_64 guest running in
current VirtualBox 4.2.10 (on same Ubuntu host as above), also using
gnome 3 ppa and the same bug occurs there repeatedly too. However, I
have another updated 12.10 x86_64 guest (inc gnome3 ppa) in VB 4.2.10 on
a Mac OSX 10.8.3 host and the bug does not occur there (well, it
occurred once but I can't repeat it?!).

[Bug 1167059] [NEW] Authentication dialog not working from gnome-shell search

2013-04-09 Thread markb
Public bug reported:

This bug is significant and repeatable.

My system is up to date Ubuntu 12.10 x86_64 running gnome-shell
(3.6.2-0ubuntu0.2) and using gnome 3 team ppa. As of recently(?),
whenever I try to run any program that requires authentication, e.g.
synaptic, then I press the meta key, type e.g. "syn" and the
shell authentication dialog pops up. If you wait about 4 seconds without
typing anything then you see the yellow "sorry, that didn't work" error
popup and the dialog closes. It does the same even if you enter the
correct password quickly to try and beat the error message, i.e. you
can't run the program at all. This problem happens with any program
that requires authentication, not just synaptic (e.g. also happens with
gparted).

I note that I can place synaptic in my launcher/dash (i.e. as a
"favorite") and then I can start it ok, i.e. the dialog does not print
that error message. It also does not happen if I navigate to the
synaptic icon in the System Tools group. It only occurs if I start
synaptic from the keyboard search, and there it happens every time.

I am using gdm rather than the default lightdm (due to the lightdm race
condition bug on ubuntu) so I switched back to lightdm, logged in to
gnome shell again, but the problem persists. The problem does not occur
if I log in to Unity and start synaptic from the Unity dash, but note
there that the authentication dialog is the traditional gnome su dialog,
not the gnome-shell themed dialog where I see this bug.

** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1070150] Re: Intermittent black screen or low graphics mode message

2013-03-19 Thread markb
Just add a comment here that I have a new fast PC + SSD + HD4000
graphics and I get both these problems on frequently updated Ubuntu
12.10. I "solved" the low graphics mode issue long ago by changing from
lightdm to gdm. I have 2 screens and occasionally I boot up and get 1
black screen but I have found this corrects if I switch to a console
terminal (i.e. ctrl+alt+f1) and then switch back to X (i.e.
ctrl+alt+f7). Both these problems occur with or without xorg edgers ppa
(which upgrades kernel to 3.7.0 currently). In fact I tried that ppa
again today and still got a black screen.

[Bug 1131263] Re: Gwibber does not add Facebook account, external browser says "Success".

2013-02-21 Thread markb
I'll just point that I have been using gwibber with Facebook fine since
Ubuntu 12.10 was released (although only after fixing
http://ubuntumisr.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/fix-facebook-not-working-with-
gwibber.html). This new bug only started happening a day or so ago. I
started getting random web page popups simply containing the text
"Success" until I tracked down the problem was due to gwibber and then I
found this bug. Presumably FB have changed the way their authentication
works.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-04 Thread markb
I just installed today's new 304.30 nvidia driver to see if this bug is
fixed but it aborted within 10 minutes:

Tried with kernel 3.5.0-8.

This 304.30 version also exhibits a new awful bug that all apps/games
which use SDL graphics turn your entire desktop blue.

@ste-goddard this bug is not specific to Ubuntu. Search around the

seen it reported on Arch, Gentoo, and Fedora at least, wherever people
are using v295.* and later nvidia drivers.

Rebooted with kernel 3.5.0-4-generic and still no virtual consoles
(using latest 302.22 nvidia). Actually this bug is all over the web for
people with some nvidia chipsets, e.g. I have a 8600 GT which is of the
family for which virtual consoles don't work. E.g. see

[Bug 1016457] Re: Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't show virtual terminal

2012-07-13 Thread markb
This bug has occurred for me since installing 12.04 (clean install). Has
worked fine in all releases prior. I believe it is a bug with nvidia
driver as virtual consoles work fine if I run nouveau. I have tried all
nvidia drivers from v295.33 to v302.22 and the bug has existed with
every one of those versions. Each time I switch back to nouveau, the
virtual terminals work. I am using default kernel 3.2 but could upgrade
to 3.5 if people really think it is kernel related?

[Bug 1012916] Re: [nouveau] 12.04 Unity 3d hard freezes

2012-07-10 Thread markb
I don't know if anybody is following my story here but I noticed an
xorg-edgers kernel update from 3.5.0.3.3 to 3.5.0.4.4 today so I thought
I would give it a test running Unity. Note, as my previous comment I can
run kernel 3.2 forever without issue. So I upgraded and rebooted to
3.5.0.4.4 and I still see PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR nouveau errors but this time
my system does not lock up. I don't see any UI problems. Here are the
dmesg logs:

[ 6392.463172] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0: PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR - Ch 4/0 Mthd
0x0060 Data 0x800f
[ 6610.102638] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0: PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR - Ch 4/0 Mthd

[ 6625.011826] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0: PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR - Ch 4/0 Mthd
0x0060 Data 0x800f

So kernel 3.5.0.4.4 has improved things, but there still seems a problem
there.

[Bug 1012916] Re: [nouveau] 12.04 Unity 3d hard freezes

2012-07-03 Thread markb
Well I have determined that for me this problem is caused by linux
kernel 3.5.0-3 (pulled in via linux-image-generic) which was installed
on my system via xorg-edgers ppa. I removed this and went back to the
generic precise kernel which is currently 3.2.0-26 and my lockups have
gone. I am still using xorg-edgers ppa, just back-graded that kernel
version.

2012-07-02 Thread markb
Well this just happened again to me with same PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR nouveau
errors in dmesg. Although this time it happened on gnome-shell, which
is my normal desktop where I have never seen this before. I have only
had this happen on those rare times I try Unity. I had updated earlier
today and noticed my kernel went from linux-image-generic-pae =
3.5.0.2.2 -> 3.5.0.3.3 and xserver-xorg-video-nouveau =
1.0.1+git20120628.0d2b414a-0ubuntu0sarvatt~precise -> 1.0.1+git20120702
.0d2b414a-0ubuntu0sarvatt~precise. At least we now know it is not
specific to Compiz/Unity. Looks like a kernel and/or nouveau issue.
Skype was running and I had music playing (via guayadeque) which I think
has been true every other time this has happened.

[Bug 1012916] Re: [nouveau] 12.04 Unity 3d hard freezes

2012-06-29 Thread markb
@brigham, I have used nvidia drivers with my system (8600 GT) for a few
years without problems but since ubuntu 12.04 (i.e. nvidia v295.33,
v295.40, v295.49, v295.53, v302.07, v302.11, v302.17?), I suffer an xorg
segmentation fault within a hour or two of booting when using nvidia
driver (and that is tried with all these versions with and without xorg-
edgers ppa enabled). See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/973096. Hence that is why I am now running
nouveau. Note I have run nouveau with Unity 3D fine since 12.04 release
except only recently when these nouveau lockups started (could be around
the release of skype 4, or that new xorg-edgers ppa kernel?). Also, note
I mainly use Gnome Shell (all day every day) and have never seen this
freeze or any other problems. Gnome Shell is a 3D desktop also so seems
Compiz + nouveau related?

I planned to grab the Xorg.0.log.old file after I rebooted but found
that the nouveau driver seems to die (or get killed) and then restarted
during my system startup, i.e. Xorg.0.log.old contains:

[32.513] (II) NOUVEAU(0): NVLeaveVT is called.
[32.520] (II) NOUVEAU(0): Closed GPU channel 2
[32.540] ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
[32.540] Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

and then the system comes up ok logging in Xorg.0.log. So I lose the
real "previous" log file. Even though this happens, there is no abnormal
screen "glitch" noticeable to me as the system comes up. Hope all this
makes sense and I hope posting this here is appropriate even though I am
using xorg-edgers ppa? Looks like an xorg/nouveau bug - but may be
something brought on by skype 4?

I should add that, like the OP, I am using dual monitors: 2 by
1900x1200.

[Bug 1012916] Re: [nouveau] 12.04 Unity 3d hard freezes

2012-06-28 Thread markb
I'm using nouveau from xorg-edgers ppa on 12.04 and I think I am having
this same bug just recently. My Unity 3D session will hang anywhere from
1 minute to a few hours after I boot. Sometimes the entire UI locks up,
other times the UI locks up but my mouse cursor will still move (but
can't select anything). I can not select an alternate console via
ctrl+alt+f1 etc. Note I mainly use gnome shell and I have never seen
this problem there, only in Unity 3D which I occasionally try out to see
where it is at. This bug essentially stops me from using Unity atm. It
could be related to kernel 3.5.0-2 which xorg-edgers seems to have
pulled in to my system 3 days ago?

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-06-20 Thread markb
Re comment #133 above from wlx, I have experienced this problem with my
8600 GT card on all nvidia versions since I installed ubuntu 12.04, i.e.
295.40 and all versions through to 302.17. I have tried the installers
from nvidia site, and also xorg-edgers ppa. I never had this problem in
the 4 years before 12.04. For me, X will not run longer than an hour or
so before it crashes, usually when I am just using a couple of terminals
and the browser in Gnome Shell (no video or flash playing).

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-06-17 Thread markb
Like danrgmc above in comment #120, I just tried nvidia driver v302.17
also (via xorg-edgers ppa) but found it seg faulted within a couple of
hours. My 8600 GT card has worked fine for years with ubuntu but this
seg fault started with Ubuntu 12.04 at nvidia v295.40 and has occurred
for all the v295.* and v302.* versions that Nvidia have released since.
Luckily the nouveau driver works fine for me (in 3d Unity and Gnome
Shell).

This bug has been reported various places in launchpad in many guises
(most users don't understand what the bug is - they just get logged out
of their DE) and has been reported all over the forums etc but I can
not recall anywhere where Canonical and/or Nvidia acknowledge that they
recognise this serious bug and are working on a fix. Can somebody at
Canonical please reassure us that this issue is being actively looked at
by somebody?

[Bug 772063] Re: App icon on the Unity Launcher lost track of running instance

2012-05-27 Thread markb
As per comment #26, I installed unity 5.12-0ubuntu1.1 from precise-
proposed (which pulled in 3 other unity packages from proposed) to
verify my problem described in comment #22. It seems kmymoney does show
a launcher icon now but there is odd behaviour. For about the first 80
secs after I log in I get 2 kmymoney icons every time I start it. Also,
the super key does not work reliably in this version of unity. It works
(slowly?) if there is at least one active window, but does not work if
no apps are running or even if no active windows, i.e. does not work if
all windows minimised. Pressing the dash launcher icon works, just not
the super key.

On 12.04 this is repeatable for me running kmymoney. Appears in Unity
launcher as app starts but then disappears. App also never appears in
alt+tab list but does appear in super+w. This is the main bug which has
always stopped my using Unity. Thought it would be fixed by 12.04 but
sadly not - back to gnome-shell for me ..

[Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-08 Thread markb
Here's my experience with a nvidia 8600GT card on ubuntu 12.04. All previous
ubuntu releases have worked fine with with proprietary driver over many years.
Installed clean 12.04 and using gnome-shell + gnome3 team ppa, nvidia driver
295.40 did a segmentation fault after a hour or so mainly just using terminals
and chrome. Installed v295.49 direct from nvidia web site. Still seg faulted
after a couple of hours. Installed v302.07 direct from nvidia web site, seg
faulted after a few more hours. I have listed the xorg log seg faults
[url=http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11904367&postcount=8]here[/url] and
[url=http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11907292&postcount=10]here[/url].
Then added xorg-edgers ppa which includes v302.07 plus other updated xorg
stuff, still get seg fault after a few hours.

Removed nvidia driver and fell back to nouveau (still from latest xorg-
edgers) and Unity 3D plus gnome-shell working beautifully. Note also
that virtual consoles (alt+F1->f6) work with nouveau but just gave black
screen on all nvidia versions with 12.04.

Note that the Settings/Additional Drivers dialog says that a user MUST
install nvidia proprietary drivers before Unity 3D will work, to get
desktop effects, etc. Clearly this is not true anymore. Nouveau is
working without compromise for me.

[Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LT Beta

2012-05-05 Thread markb
I did a clean install of 12.04 and have been experiencing this a few
times per day also on with my nvidia 8600 GT card. That was with nvidia-
current-updates at 295.40. Never saw this problem on 11.10. You will see
a xorg server segmentation fault in the log file when this happens. I
installed the 295.49 driver from nvidia site and get the same seg fault.
Then installed the 302.07 beta driver and still see the seg fault.

I've found that this problem occurs only on some specific torrents,

recently on Fedora . Actually the xonotic torrent I quote in my comment

it should be easy for developers to reproduce and fix this bug?

[Bug 928438] Re: LibreOffice doesn't have window title or buttons in Unity

2012-02-08 Thread markb
Seems to be initiated when jumping between full screen apps,
particularly to/from nautilus. When it happens, Libreoffice also
disappears from the alt-tab list and, if minimised, also from the expo
(ctrl-w) view. So it completely disappears from view and access from
Unity when minimised. However, if you close all other apps then start a
new app then Libreoffice springs back into view.

I originally had this problem with Libreoffice 1:3.4.5 from the ppa so I
purged it back to the standard 1:3.4.4 packages but find the problem
still exists.

Not sure if helpful but further to my above comment I find that gnome-

futex(0xb62c8b64, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 2147483647) = 0

Sits on last line above at 100% cpu.

If I run transmission-gtk under strace then it won't fail but if I run
it normally and then attach strace after it locks up, then it is also
sitting on a futex() call at 100% cpu (although in this case it also
hangs my gnome-shell session).

[Bug 881955] Re: System monitor freezes up when switching to Processes tab

2011-11-13 Thread markb
I am running Oneiric x32 with nvidia driver and also get this problem
when I enable xorg-edgers ppa. Purging that ppa removes the problem.
Does not happen on my intel video laptop with same ppa enabled so seems
xorg-edgers + nvidia (290.06) related?

System monitor lock up is repeatable but other GTK apps lock up also,
e.g. transmission. When it locks up in transmission sometimes my entire
gnome-shell session locks up and I must kill it from a console.

[Bug 711799] Re: e2fsprogs wrongly identifies ext4 as mounted

2011-07-14 Thread markb
I did read the man page and noted the scramble option. In fact, I did
save a scrambled image before I recovered my partition but the man page
is vague on how the names are (one-way?) ciphered and the e2image.c code
had little comments to help explain it so I am not willing to publish my
image anywhere. Are there some debugfs type commands you would like me
to try on your behalf? Please contact me privately as this is a terrible
bug that I think warrants your attention.

I have 2 similar partitions, sda2 and sda3. Both are ext4, exactly the
same size, and were created about the same time. I could run fsck fine
on sda2, but (the corrupted) sda3 always gave the "device busy" error as
above. The 11.04 e2fsprogs_1.41.14_1ubuntu3 does seem pretty much the
same as the generic 1.41.14 sources I had already tried so there must be
something else unique about the 10.10 kernel/environment?

ok now. I remember it prompted me once to fix a single issue but sorry

1.41.14 from sourceforge, built and installed it, but still get the
error:

% sudo fsck /dev/sda3
fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
fsck.ext4: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda3
Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?

So I don't think the latest e2fsprogs fixes this at all, or it is
another problem (no - /dev/sda3 is not mounted anywhere). I am going to
have to find a live CD to try and fix this very annoying bug. How ubuntu
could leave a serious bug like this open in 10.10 just shocks me?

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)

2010-12-02 Thread markb
@Konstantinos I have been using your ppa packages for ages to fix this
bug on Lucid. Did a clean install to Maverick this week and shocked to
see this bug still exists. However applying your ppa does not fix this
bug on Maverick for me.

The ubuntu development process is failing. This bug and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/160311 are good
examples.

[Bug 482684] Re: The nm-applet icon is missing or the sound icon is duplicated and the second one is dead

2010-02-19 Thread markb
I eliminated this problem as Jase says above in comment #6.

I was using the gnome "Shut Down" applet beside my notification area. I
swapped this to the "Indicator Applet Session" and I have not seen the
problem since. Those 2 applets give similar functionality.

Note maintainers, as I said above in comment #8. I was using exactly the
same applets on my slower laptop but never saw the problem there. So I
contend this is a timing/speed related problem.

I get the same bug. Very occasionally the nm-applet icon will appear

have a fairly fast PC. Never happens on my slower laptop which is
otherwise nearly identically configured with Karmic.

[Bug 336508] Re: kiki crashed with ImportError in ()

2009-05-09 Thread markb
This is probably not the appropriate place to report this but it seems
to be related. I have noticed a number of wxpython apps have started
crashing since I installed spe on my ubuntu jaunty box. I have traced
the problem to the fact that, even though I have wxpython2.8 installed,
when I installed spe it installed kiki which installed wxpython2.6 and
that seems to have become the default wxpython version. So any wx2.8
specific app dies now. If I uninstall kiki (which removes wx2.6), then
everything returns to ok. There's probably 2 bugs here - kiki requiring
an old wx version and the fact it gets installed as the default?

[Bug 187313] Re: [MASTER] right click (with button release) might activate random popup-menu-item

Further to my above comment, I just did a bit of research and I find
that my firefox updated from 3.0.4 -> 3.0.5 on 18-Dec (intrepid apt

[Bug 296902] Re: screen brightness adjustment causes mouse/keyboard input to stop

2008-11-21 Thread markb
Happens for me as well with intrepid on my dell 640m laptop. The dimmer
bar window stays up in the middle of my screen. If I do a "killall

bad bug this one.

The screen gets dimmed very quickly when operating on battery. Far
quicker than the 15 mins it is supposed to be (probably another bug). Of
course when I try and adjust it back I get the present bug.

[Bug 187313] Re: [MASTER] right click (with button release) might activate random popup-menu-item

2008-11-19 Thread markb
I'm a long time kde (kubuntu) user and have never seen this bug before.
However, with the intrepid release I have switched to gnome and I am
seeing this bug happening constantly, always in firefox. I make this
point because it implies the problem to be within gtk, or at least
firefox's interaction with gtk. I also see another (related?) problem
that sometimes a quick right click on my bookmarks menu spuriously
brings up the "page bookmarked" popup.

Man is this bug annoying. I'm surprised it's been open so long and is
only medium priority? Off to try that mouse gestures plugin although I
don't really like loading more on the back of struggling firefox ..

[Bug 38131] Re: Firefox causes massive Xorg CPU usage

2008-11-12 Thread markb
With regards to my comments above in this bug, I have found my problem.
Not sure whether/if this applies to anybody else. I discovered that it
is not only Firefox which induces xorg into this crazy cpu state. Xorg
would eventually get that way even if I never started firefox, it would
just take longer to get there. It seems firefox pushes xorg into this
state quicker. Once xorg starts hammering the cpu, then it would not
recover no matter what I did. It would not respond to a ctrl-alt-
backspace and even shutting the machine down would take ages. The odd
thing for me is that I also noticed that this problem only happened at
my work where I used my laptop often, it did not seem to happen when I
used the laptop at home (I initially suspected some kind of weird DNS
interaction).

The problem turned out to be due to my optical mouse. I don't use a
mousepad and the particular light pine looking table surface at work
caused the optical mouse to hammer xorg. As soon as I pull the usb mouse
out, xorg drops back to normal. This problem does not happen any other
place I use the same mouse, including at another desk that looks exactly
the same to my eye. So simply by using a mousepad now at the offending
desk, my xorg cpu problem is solved.

[Bug 294934] [NEW] Contacts don't show when offline

2008-11-06 Thread markb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

I'm a kubuntu + kopete user new to ubuntu + pidgin and see a simple
repeatable bug on intrepid 8.10 with pidgin 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1 (up to date
as of today). The bug is that any contacts you select to "show when
offline" are only shown after pidgin sees an online to offline
transition. I.e. If you start pidgin and such a contact is already
offline then he is not displayed. If that contact comes online then goes
offline then he will display correctly. Even in this last case, if you
restart pidgin then that contact is not displayed anymore.

This bug seems related to bug #278437 and bug #218902 but it simpler.

Also, possibly unrelated but I don't want to raise yet another bug,
there is a "show when offline" plugin available in my plugin list which
seems to duplicate the base functionality. When I enable it I get 2
"show when offline" items in my contact menu.

Kopete has a great feature to show the history + times of your contacts
status changes. I'm amazed that pidgin does not offer this functionality
(nor any of its plugins).

[Bug 176271] Re: major throughput difference (between upload and download) when using iwl3945

2008-07-27 Thread markb
I have this problem on my Dell 640m Inspiron laptop. My downloads are
about 2MB/s after a clean reboot but drop to about 700KB/s after a few
minutes and never recover, until the next reboot.

I've tried the current linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-19-generic (with
iwl3945 v1.2.0), linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-19-generic (with iwl3945
v1.2.25), and compat-wireless-2008-07-25 (with iwl v1.2.26k) and all
exhibit the problem and with no difference between them.

I also configured my router as 802.11g only (as suggested above) but
that made no difference.

This wireless chipset is so common and this bug is such a PITA that I'm
surprised there are not more people clamoring here for a fix?

[Bug 206809] Re: Setting "Visual effects" to "None" is ignored when logging in again

2008-06-20 Thread markb
I can confirm this bug.

I'm running Kubuntu Hardy and I can change System/Desktop Effects to
"None" and it turn Compiz off for the rest of that session but Compiz
comes back after next reboot.

[PS. Compiz looks great and I've been running it for a few months now
but boy it is buggy, at least on KDE. That's why I am trying to turn if
off].

[Bug 205233] Re: kde-window-decorator crashes when turning on/off KDE's "GUI Effects" setting

2008-05-11 Thread markb
I'm on a new hardy kubuntu install with a 8600GT card and using nvidia-
glx-new. kde-window-decorator crashes very frequently for me when
changing various settings in ccsm. As a new user experimenting with
compiz, this means it crashes many times a day (since there seems no
other way to understand compiz settings other to stuff around for
hours!). So this is my number one annoying bug.

The comment from Travis Watkins above is disheartening. So kubuntu
really is a poor cousin? Didn't Mr. Shuttleworth say this
http://www.kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-commitment.php ?

Yes, in the time I was waiting for your 2nd reply I worked that out for
myself. The problem is fixed now. Many thanks for your help.

[Bug 186382] Re: [nvidia 169.xx] gtk window decorator somtimes draws decoration ugly or not at all

2008-05-10 Thread markb
I installed the packages from hardy-proposed using aptitude but because
I had set up the libwfb.so link manually I don't think the packages
corrected it? Anyhow, I set them by hand as above. Note that I have no
/usr/lib/nvidia/libwfb* files at all (I did not touch anything in that
dir), so surely I need to create/link libwfb.so somewhere? You mean just
delete that file/link and all will be ok?

[Bug 186382] Re: [nvidia 169.xx] gtk window decorator somtimes draws decoration ugly or not at all

2008-05-09 Thread markb
I have a 8600GT and have installed nvidia-glx-new 169.12+2.6.24.12-17.36
and linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-17-generic 2.6.24.12-17.36. I also
have:

  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 270552 2008-04-26 11:53 libnvidia-wfb.so.173.08
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2008-05-10 15:06 libnvidia-wfb.so.1 ->
libnvidia-wfb.so.173.08
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2008-05-10 14:57 libwfb.so ->
libnvidia-wfb.so.173.08

But I still get those pink/yellow borders and corrupted window
decorations. Any ideas?

2007-06-28 Thread MarkB
Oops. Sorry about not getting back to you.

I completed several gaming sessions over the past several weeks and
could not reproduce the error. I will retain your email in case it
happens again. I will try to capture a detailed error report.

Thanks for the attention to this matter and sorry for what is so far, a
false alarm.

I'll try over the next couple of days and let you know. It's kinda hard
to win regularly.

Re: [Bug 115533] Re: spider solitare locked up at end of game, froze panel.

2007-05-19 Thread MarkB
Thanks for the quick followup. Please excuse me if my object naming
convention is rough, I'm new to Ubuntu.

I was playing the game AisleRiot Solitare > Spider. I actually won a game.
At the end the gane the Spider window froze. I could not access the menus of
the Spider game, the Ubuntu menus (Application, Places, etc.) were like wise
frozen. I was able to switch to a different panel (lower right of screen).

After about 1 minute the system unfroze and presented me with a game
over popup.

I'm not familiar with the different log files to find the error messages.
I'm willing to look if given directions.
