[Bug 1889342] Re: Thunderbolt Dock Loses Monitors
I'm cc'd on this thread from a while ago when I was looking around for solutions to the many issues that plagued my XPS 9300 laptop and my WD19TB dock (same combination as OP here). I can state that with any Linux kernel 5.10.16 or later, and XPS BIOS 1.5.0, and dock firmware 01.00.15.01, all problems are fixed. I use that combo daily (although up to kernel 5.12.2 now on Arch Linux) and never get any problem at all which is surprising actually given how flaky it was beforehand. There were a heap of i915 patches done in 5.10.15 which are required and then 1 more from 5.10.16 (Fix vswing programming for TBT) that is essential. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1889342 Title: Thunderbolt Dock Loses Monitors To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1889342/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I am the person who wrote the post on the Dell forums Vladimir is referring to (and I have posted earlier here as above). [Bug 1167059] [NEW] Authentication dialog not working from gnome-shell search
Public bug reported: This bug is significant and repeatable. My system is up to date Ubuntu 12.10 x86_64 running gnome-shell (3.6.2-0ubuntu0.2) and using gnome 3 team ppa. As of recently(?), whenever I try to run any program that requires authentication, e.g. synaptic, then I press the meta key, type e.g. "syn" and the shell authentication dialog pops up. If you wait about 4 seconds without typing anything then you see the yellow "sorry, that didn't work" error popup and the dialog closes. It does the same even if you enter the correct password quickly to try and beat the error message, i.e. you can't run the program at all. This problem happens with any program that requires authentication, not just synaptic (e.g. also happens with gparted). I note that I can place synaptic in my launcher/dash (i.e. as a "favorite") and then I can start it ok, i.e. the dialog does not print that error message. It also does not happen if I navigate to the synaptic icon in the System Tools group. It only occurs if I start synaptic from the keyboard search, and there it happens every time. I am using gdm rather than the default lightdm (due to the lightdm race condition bug on ubuntu) so I switched back to lightdm, logged in to gnome shell again, but the problem persists. The problem does not occur if I log in to Unity and start synaptic from the Unity dash, but note there that the authentication dialog is the traditional gnome su dialog, not the gnome-shell themed dialog where I see this bug. ** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1167059 Title: Authentication dialog not working from gnome-shell search To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1167059/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Just add a comment here that I have a new fast PC + SSD + HD4000 graphics and I get both these problems on frequently updated Ubuntu 12.10. I "solved" the low graphics mode issue long ago by changing from lightdm to gdm. [Bug 1012916] Re: [nouveau] 12.04 Unity 3d hard freezes
@brigham, I have used nvidia drivers with my system (8600 GT) for a few years without problems but since ubuntu 12.04 (i.e. nvidia v295.33, v295.40, v295.49, v295.53, v302.07, v302.11, v302.17?), I suffer an xorg segmentation fault within a hour or two of booting when using nvidia driver (and that is tried with all these versions with and without xorg- edgers ppa enabled). See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/973096. Hence that is why I am now running nouveau. Note I have run nouveau with Unity 3D fine since 12.04 release except only recently when these nouveau lockups started (could be around the release of skype 4, or that new xorg-edgers ppa kernel?). Like danrgmc above in comment #120, I just tried nvidia driver v302.17 also (via xorg-edgers ppa) but found it seg faulted within a couple of hours. [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver
Here's my experience with a nvidia 8600GT card on ubuntu 12.04. All previous ubuntu releases have worked fine with with proprietary driver over many years. Installed clean 12.04 and using gnome-shell + gnome3 team ppa, nvidia driver 295.40 did a segmentation fault after a hour or so mainly just using terminals and chrome. Installed v295.49 direct from nvidia web site. Still seg faulted after a couple of hours. Installed v302.07 direct from nvidia web site, seg faulted after a few more hours. I have listed the xorg log seg faults [url=http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11904367&postcount=8]here[/url] and [url=http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11907292&postcount=10]here[/url]. Then added xorg-edgers ppa which includes v302.07 plus other updated xorg stuff, still get seg fault after a few hours. Removed nvidia driver and fell back to nouveau (still from latest xorg- edgers) and Unity 3D plus gnome-shell working beautifully. Note also that virtual consoles (alt+F1->f6) work with nouveau but just gave black screen on all nvidia versions with 12.04. Note that the Settings/Additional Drivers dialog says that a user MUST install nvidia proprietary drivers before Unity 3D will work, to get desktop effects, etc. Clearly this is not true anymore. Nouveau is working without compromise for me. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/982485 Title: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nvidia-drivers-ubuntu/+bug/982485/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 980519] Re: Random log off in Ubuntu 12.04 LT Beta
I did a clean install of 12.04 and have been experiencing this a few times per day also on with my nvidia 8600 GT card. That was with nvidia- current-updates at 295.40. [Bug 928438] Re: LibreOffice doesn't have window title or buttons in Unity
Seems to be initiated when jumping between full screen apps, particularly to/from nautilus. When it happens, Libreoffice also disappears from the alt-tab list and, if minimised, also from the expo (ctrl-w) view. So it completely disappears from view and access from Unity when minimised. However, if you close all other apps then start a new app then Libreoffice springs back into view. [Bug 711799] Re: e2fsprogs wrongly identifies ext4 as mounted
I did read the man page and noted the scramble option. In fact, I did save a scrambled image before I recovered my partition but the man page is vague on how the names are (one-way?) ciphered and the e2image.c code had little comments to help explain it so I am not willing to publish my image anywhere. Are there some debugfs type commands you would like me to try on your behalf? Please contact me privately as this is a terrible bug that I think warrants your attention. I have 2 similar partitions, sda2 and sda3. Both are ext4, exactly the same size, and were created about the same time. I could run fsck fine on sda2, but (the corrupted) sda3 always gave the "device busy" error as above. The 11.04 e2fsprogs_1.41.14_1ubuntu3 does seem pretty much the same as the generic 1.41.14 sources I had already tried so there must be something else unique about the 10.10 kernel/environment? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/711799 Title: e2fsprogs wrongly identifies ext4 as mounted To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/e2fsprogs/+bug/711799/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 711799] Re: e2fsprogs wrongly identifies ext4 as mounted
I am suffering this bug on my 10.10 laptop. It just decided to not boot anymore last night. According to TT, I downloaded the latest e2fsprogs 1.41.14 from sourceforge, built and installed it, but still get the error: % sudo fsck /dev/sda3 fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010) e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010) fsck.ext4: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda3 Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program? This is probably not the appropriate place to report this but it seems to be related. I have noticed a number of wxpython apps have started crashing since I installed spe on my ubuntu jaunty box. Happens for me as well with intrepid on my dell 640m laptop. The dimmer bar window stays up in the middle of my screen. If I do a "killall nautilus" then dimmer disappears and keyboard and mouse come back. Very bad bug this one. The screen gets dimmed very quickly when operating on battery. Far quicker than the 15 mins it is supposed to be (probably another bug). [Bug 187313] Re: [MASTER] right click (with button release) might activate random popup-menu-item
I'm a long time kde (kubuntu) user and have never seen this bug before. However, with the intrepid release I have switched to gnome and I am seeing this bug happening constantly, always in firefox. I make this point because it implies the problem to be within gtk, or at least firefox's interaction with gtk. I also see another (related?) problem that sometimes a quick right click on my bookmarks menu spuriously brings up the "page bookmarked" popup. Man is this bug annoying. I'm surprised it's been open so long and is only medium priority? Off to try that mouse gestures plugin although I don't really like loading more on the back of struggling firefox .. -- [MASTER] right click (with button release) might activate random popup-menu-item https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/187313 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 38131] Re: Firefox causes massive Xorg CPU usage
With regards to my comments above in this bug, I have found my problem. Not sure whether/if this applies to anybody else. I discovered that it is not only Firefox which induces xorg into this crazy cpu state. Xorg would eventually get that way even if I never started firefox, it would just take longer to get there. It seems firefox pushes xorg into this state quicker. Once xorg starts hammering the cpu, then it would not recover no matter what I did. It would not respond to a ctrl-alt- backspace and even shutting the machine down would take ages. The odd thing for me is that I also noticed that this problem only happened at my work where I used my laptop often, it did not seem to happen when I used the laptop at home (I initially suspected some kind of weird DNS interaction). The problem turned out to be due to my optical mouse. I don't use a mousepad and the particular light pine looking table surface at work caused the optical mouse to hammer xorg. As soon as I pull the usb mouse out, xorg drops back to normal. This problem does not happen any other place I use the same mouse, including at another desk that looks exactly the same to my eye. So simply by using a mousepad now at the offending desk, my xorg cpu problem is solved. -- Firefox causes massive Xorg CPU usage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/38131 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 294934] [NEW] Contacts don't show when offline
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pidgin I'm a kubuntu + kopete user new to ubuntu + pidgin and see a simple repeatable bug on intrepid 8.10 with pidgin 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1 (up to date as of today). The bug is that any contacts you select to "show when offline" are only shown after pidgin sees an online to offline transition. I.e. If you start pidgin and such a contact is already offline then he is not displayed. If that contact comes online then goes offline then he will display correctly. Even in this last case, if you restart pidgin then that contact is not displayed anymore. This bug seems related to bug #278437 and bug #218902 but it simpler. Also, possibly unrelated but I don't want to raise yet another bug, there is a "show when offline" plugin available in my plugin list which seems to duplicate the base functionality. When I enable it I get 2 "show when offline" items in my contact menu. Kopete has a great feature to show the history + times of your contacts status changes. I'm amazed that pidgin does not offer this functionality (nor any of its plugins). ** Affects: pidgin (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Contacts don't show when offline https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/294934 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks for the quick followup. Please excuse me if my object naming convention is rough, I'm new to Ubuntu. I was playing the game AisleRiot Solitare > Spider. I actually won a game. At the end the gane the Spider window froze. I could not access the menus of the Spider game, the Ubuntu menus (Application, Places, etc.) were like wise frozen. I was able to switch to a different panel (lower right of screen). After about 1 minute the system unfroze and presented me with a game over popup.
