Re: [Bug 123920] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Keyboard/Mouse don't work

2020-01-30 Thread Martin G Miller
Yes. My hardware is still working as well as the day I got it. I only
charge it rarely, maybe once every other month. I always turn it off
when not in use and don't leave it attached to the charging base. Maybe
that helped the longevity, or maybe i just got lucky.

In a recent clean install of Ubuntu 19.10 I did not have any problems
with this keyboard/mouse. Actually, its an integrated track pad.

[Bug 1437764] Re: ttf-mscorefonts-installer doesn't work from Ubuntu Software Center because of EULA, breaks APT

2017-01-12 Thread Martin G Miller
Actually, this bug has existed since 14.04. It is still present today
in 16.04. Sometimes the EULA appears in a window underneath the
software center, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the ubuntu-restricted-
extras package won't even show up in software center. My workaround
since 14.04 has been to install synaptic package manager and then
install the restricted extras package from there. That works as
expected every time.

[Bug 388553] Re: Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) not supported

2016-08-25 Thread Martin G Miller
Ran into this problem at a patients house today. I am running Ubuntu
16.04 and usually connect through my cell phone as a mobile hotspot, but
there was no cell service at the location I went to. The patient has
wifi in her house, but it only works with Windows 10 with WPS button on
the router. Even though she gave me the password, I could not connect.
Her new Verizon supplied router only wants WPS connections for some
reason. Anyway, Ubuntu should really be able to do this.

[Bug 1352374] Re: changing backlight color on saitek eclipse 2 keyboard causes mouse failure

2015-02-23 Thread Martin G Miller
Status New
I have updated the BIOS from version 1503 (1-16-13) to version 2501.

Here is the output of your command:

marty@tux:~$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s
bios-release-date
[sudo] password for marty:
2501
04/07/2014
marty@tux:~$

The behavior is unchanged from before the BIOS update. If I wait until
the system finishes booting and I am on my desktop and attempt to change
the start up color of the keyboard illumination from blue to red, I lose
most mouse left and right click ability on the desktop area. I can
still click the gear icon and have the system log off and log back on as
long as I don't wait too long. The longer I wait to attempt the log
off, the less mouse function I have until all it does is move the cursor
around, but nothing is clickable. The keyboard will still function for
a much longer period of time until everything becomes unresponsive.

My current work around is to change the keyboard color as soon as the
boot process starts to load the Linux kernel.

If I wait until I am on the desktop to change the color, then I must
immediately log off and back on and everything is fine as long as I
don't attempt to change the color again. Any further changes of
keyboard color require an immediate log off and on to keep the system
stable.

[Bug 1321354] Re: open samba shares become unresponsive if unused for 15 minutes

2014-09-08 Thread Martin G Miller
I have since built a new file server which runs Ubuntu 14.04. All Samba
shares to it function normally. The problem is with Samba and WIndows
XP. I don't know if it affects all versions of Windows or just XP 32
bit that I was using. I now have the 2 Windows programs that I can't
get away from running in a VM on the Ubuntu server.

[Bug 1352374] [NEW] changing backlight color on saitek eclipse 2 keyboard causes mouse failure

2014-08-04 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

This has apparently been ongoing for a long time. I have a Saitek
Eclipse ii keyboard and I and others report that when you click the
keyboard button to change the back light color, it triggers mouse
events. These end up disabling the mouse, in my case Microsoft
Intellimouse. Unplugging and replugging the USB cable for the keyboard
resets function to normal with the default blue back light color. If
you try to change the color, the problem returns. I am now running 64
bit 14.04 and the problem has been with me since at least 12.04. If I
change the backlight color while the system is booting up but before the
log in screen appears, I can select the color I want the keyboard to be,
but if I wait till after the log in screen appears, then the mouse is
non-functional when the desktop loads until I log off and back on.

Here is some relevant data from a report on Ubuntu forums
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2174670) about this exact
problem...

So, the backlight changing on a keyboard act as different types of mouse
clicks based on what color you switch to. Apparently this problem is
also present in PCLinuxOS. Is this possibly a Udev issue?

[Bug 1328320] Re: fresh install fails on RAID 1 with failure to update grub

2014-06-11 Thread Martin G Miller
There was nothing wrong with the install media.

It only took me about 10 hours to figure out what was going on. It is
complex and involves dmraid and mdadm and boot repair as well as
manually setting up the partitions in the installer. Grub refuses to
install no matter how you set the partitions in the installer, so you
have to run boot repair twice to fix everything.

It eventually ends up running in RAID 1 using dmraid.

If you do it right, you can install Ubuntu 14.04 to a software RAID 1,
but it is complex. I posted the full instructions on the Ubuntu
formus..
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2229126&p=13047160#post13047160

It would be nice if the "Something Else" choice in the installer offered
to help you set up simple software RAID sets using the included dmraid
package. Something to add to Wish List perhaps?

[Bug 1328320] [NEW] fresh install fails on RAID 1 with failure to update grub

[Bug 1321354] [NEW] open samba shares become unresponsive if unused for 15 minutes

2014-05-20 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

I am running a windows file server with several shared folders. I access them
from my Ubuntu machines on a gigabit ethernet local area network using nautilus
and save the ones I need as bookmarks. I also have text files on the server
that remain open so I can modify them during the day. I have done this
succesfully for the last 4 years using Ubuntu clients 10.04, 12.04. I recently
did clean installs on 3 of my office machines to 14.04. All 64 bit.
Establishing the shares and saving them as bookmarks works as expected. I have
the shares open across several workspaces. Leaving the shares open in their
own windows will work only if I continue to use them. If I take the focus off
the open window with the share for 15 minutes, the window becomes unresponsive
if I attempt to do anything in it. I get the error message:
 "Oops! Something went wrong.
Unhandled error message: Software caused connection abort"

I then have to close the open window with the share which takes longer
than normal to close and trying to reopen the share from nautilus also
can take up to 15-20 seconds to re-open. The share will then work
normally until I again stop using it for about 15 minutes, which causes
a repeat of the problem. It is very consistent. Once any of the shares
is made to work again, they all start working normally until the next
time there is a problem.

Thinking it was a Nautilus problem, I tried using both Nemo and Thunar.
They also exhibit the same problem, but instead of throwing an error
message, they turn their window grey for 15-20 seconds and then start
working again.

My current work around is to open a terminal and enter the command:
"sudo watch smbstatus" which causes the samba server to get pinged
every 2 seconds. As long as I do this, the shares all seem to work as
expected again.

I have 1 Ubuntu 12.04 machine in my office that continues to handle
samba shares normally.

3) What you expected to happen:
I expect open samba shares to remain responsive and usable no matter how long
they are not the focus of activity.

4) What happened instead:
Instead, if the share does not remain the focus, the share becomes unresponsive
and must be restarted.

[Bug 1319186] [NEW] browsing samba shares becomes unresponsive over time

2014-05-13 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit

nautilus version: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9

I have saved as bookmarks several samba shares from a Windows machine on
my office network to my Ubuntu 14.04 workstations (Windows is host,
Ubuntu is client). I switch to a new workspace and open the saved
share. It displays normally. I switch to another workspace and open a
different saved samba share. It also works normally. I then switch to
a 3rd workspace where I am using various programs. If you wait 15
minutes and change back to the workspaces where the opened shares exist,
they have become unresponsive. Clicking on any files or folders will
will cause a delay followed by the open window becoming unresponsive
with the only choice being to close the window and then reopen the share
from a right click of the files menu in the launcher. The share will
again open and work normally until you again change workspaces and wait
about 15 minutes, after which it again becomes unresponsive.

This behaviour never happend with Ubuntu 10.04 or 12.04, which I was
using before. Every machine in my office which all have a fresh install
of 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04 behave the same way.

As an experiment, I installed Nemo on 1 of my machines and instead of
becoming unresponsive, the browser window turns grey for 15 seconds, but
then starts to work normally.

The expected behaviour would be to have the open browser windows
continue to work without delay after switching workspaces and coming
back to them after a period of 15 minutes.

[Bug 1251940] [NEW] software-properties-gtk does not have drivers tab

2013-11-16 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded my nvidia driver and after rebooting, checked jockey
(additional drivers) to see if the new driver was installed. It said it
was activated, but not in use. This was an error as it was clearly in
use. I then discovered that jockey has been superseded by software-
properties-gtk. This is the gui that should be used for the old
additional drivers function. When running software-properties-gtk, the
dialog that opens does not have the last tab on the right that should
show the additional drivers.

Release: Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS 64 bit

[Bug 887793] Re: Kworker constantly taking about 100% CPU

2013-11-06 Thread Martin G Miller
Had this problem with a 12.04 that had been upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10
to 12.04 32 bit. I finally reinstalled new 64 bit 12.04 and the problem
persisted. For me it was gpe11 that had a value of 4200. I followed
the instructions from post #114 above, modified for gpe11 instead of 13
and it seems to have resolved the problem for me. I did have to run all
the commands with sudo instead of starting with the tilde (~).

2012-09-22 Thread Martin G Miller
I have the same problem with a wired USB Microsoft mouse. I have to log
off and back on after a reboot to get the mouse to work reliably.
Otherwise, the cursor will move, but I can't click on anything. This
behavior will cut in and out every minute or 2 until I log off and back
on. The USB wired keyboard continues to work normally throughout.

[Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-09-13 Thread Martin G Miller
That is why I made the batch file on the Windows desktop. Sometimes I
have to hit it 2 or 3 times to get the clipboard to start working again.
The other thing is to make sure you have something in the clipboard on
the local side first. Just copy anything into the buffer from the local
machine before trying to copy from the remote machine.

[Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-08-15 Thread Martin G Miller
Damir Butmir:
This may be a problem on the Windows machine itself. There are 2 things to
try.

First, put something in the clipboard by "ctrl-c ing" any random text on
your local Linux machine before trying to copy from the XP box. If this
works, then I agree, its' still a bug in Remmina, even if the dev says
it's normal behavior.

Second, the XP remote clipboard in Windows may be hung. I have found
this to be a problem NOT exclusive to RDP in Linux. It is also reported
as a long standing problem in all Windows OS's when running RDP. Once
you have the remote session open, run the Windows task manager (right
click the task bar and select task manager) and look for the process
rdpclip.exe. End task on this process and then at the top of the task
manager window, click on File > New Task (Run) and enter rdpclip.exe in
the dialog box and run it. Now try your clipboard and see if it is
working.

If that fixes it for you, then it's a Windows problem. I have created a
small batch file that I leave on the Windows desktop that I can click on
to quickly end and restart the rdpclip.exe.

Place the following in a file called clipboard.bat
Taskkill.exe /im rdpclip.exe
Rdpclip.exe

I actually got this info from a Windows discussion site where many
people who only run Windows were having the same problem.

[Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-06-07 Thread Martin G Miller
OK, The one thing I didn't think of was that the one common thread in my
problem was Windows. I have been having so much trouble with remmina
that I just kept assuming Windows was fine. In this case, it was the
Windows clipboard that had failed. It would not copy/paste anything
within itself, never mind over a remote connection. Once I restarted my
Windows session, every thing started working again.

Thank you for the fine work in resolving the remmina clipboard bug, it
is usable now. The only remaining glitch is it should not need to have
something in the buffer from the client side first. It never needed
that before.

[Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-06-07 Thread Martin G Miller
I saw the new update for remmina last night and installed it and
clipboard synch worked as long as I put something into the clipboard
from the client side first. I also used it this morning on a remote job
site without problems.

However, once I got back to my office, I found that all clipboard sych
was disabled in all my machines. These are running ubuntu 10.04, 11.10,
12.10, some are 32 bit, some are 64 bit. Also, I use terminal services
client, krdc and remmina in various machines. They all worked
yesterday, but none of them work today. All clip board synch everywhere
is now disabled and I am dead in the water...The server is running
Windwos XP SP2 and all the clients are Ubuntu of various releases.

Any thoughts on where to start fixing this would be appreciated.

"When you connect to an RDP server, the client clipboard data is copied to the
server.
Its not the server clipboard data that is copied to the client.

Thats totally normal, and not a bug."

I don't understand this statement. the clipboard has always worked in
both directions until now. You are implying you can only copy from the
client to the server, but not from the server to the client. Bi-
directional copy/paste is vital for this feature to have value.

I found an easier way then logging in in 2D for Unity 11.10 64 bit 3D.

Load a you tube video and pause it.
Click to make it full screen.
Now you can right click on the video and remove the check mark for hardware
video acceleration.

Close and reload the browser.
I did this in Firefox and found that it fixed Chrome at the same time.

[Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-05-09 Thread Martin G Miller
I tried erasing the remmina.pref file and started fresh. Now the clip
board works sometimes. Sometimes it only remembers the last thing I
tried to copy and I have to try copying several times for it to work.
Sometimes it does nothing at all. It also crashed after a few copy
paste attempts.

Is there any way to insgtall the old version of Remmina from 11.10 that
worked properly in 12.04?

[Bug 995639] Re: libopenal1 not installed correctly No sound at all in ut2k4

2012-05-06 Thread Martin G Miller
I would like to apologize to everyone for wasting your time. I was
looking in lib instead of /usr/lib. The files are where they are
supposed to be.

To get the sound working in UT 2004:
In 64 bit Precise (12.04) You need to fix the openal.so symlink in
~/ut2004/System
you need to link to the 32 bit version which is now in:
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libopenal.so.1.1.13.0
So, do: gksudo nautilus to get a root browser and navigate to the
libopenal.so.1.1.13.0 file.
Right click it and Make Link.
Move the link to ~/ut2004/System
Rename the link openal.so

Next:
edit ~/.UT2004/system/UT2004.ini

Go to the area:
[ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem]

and change this:
UseEAX=False
Use3DSound=False
UseDefaultDriver=True
CompatibilityMode=False

To this:
UseEAX=True
Use3DSound=False
UseDefaultDriver=False
CompatibilityMode=False

 Change:
 channels=32

to:
channels=72

Save the file.

Sound should now work

[Bug 995639] [NEW] libopenal1 not installed correctly No sound at all in ut2k4

2012-05-06 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

I have just upgraded Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 64 bit. My sound works in
general, but not in one of my games, UT2K4. Upon examination, I
discovered libopenal1 is not correctly installed. If I look in synaptic
it says it is installed. I also tried reinstalling it.

The files that are supposed to be there are:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libopenal.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libopenal.so.1.13.0
/usr/share/doc/libopenal1/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/libopenal1/copyright
/usr/share/doc/libopenal1/examples/alsoftrc.sample.gz

However, only the files in /usr/share/doc are actually installed.
The 2 files:
 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libopenal.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libopenal.so.1.13.0

do not exist on my system.

I attempted to file a bug directly against libopenal1, the command:
ubuntu-bug libopenal1 returns an error that libopenal1 is not installed, even
though synaptic says it is.

Is there any way I can just get these 2 files so I can put them where
they belong?

[Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-05-05 Thread Martin G Miller
So far the only thing it does not do correctly is integrate with the
Unity launcher. It's icon appears there, but once the program is
running, if you click on the launcher icon again it will load a second
instance of the program instead of switching to the running instance.
It also seems to lack the ability to map the host drive to your local
session. There is no way to make it display window contents while
dragging. It only shows the outline of the window like the old rdesktop
applicaiton used to do. Most of these things don't bother me, except
the Unity launcher icon behavior.

I should move this discussion to either the Ubuntu forums or open a bug
on krdc for not respecting the Unity launcher. I applologize for
getting off topic on what is a bug report for remmina but thought I
should at least mention an alternative here.

[Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-05-05 Thread Martin G Miller
I just tried installing krdc from the Ubuntu repos. I have Ubuntu 12.04
64 bit unity desktop and it works as expected OOTB. The clip board sync
works properly in both directions from and to Ubuntu and Windows XP
remote desktop session, where Windows is the host and Ubuntu is the
local. Although it is a kde application, it doesn't look too out of
place and it adopts the Unity window decorations and icons, etc. The
main thing is that it works. I will experiment with it for a few days
to make sure it's stable and if it is, I can proceed to upgrade all my
systems to 12.04.

[Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-05-05 Thread Martin G Miller
No matter which repository I use, Ubuntu or dupondje, the "About
Remmina" always shows v 0.99.9.1. I have tried doing a sudo apt-get
remove --purge remmina, which seems to complete without errors. I then
reinstall it either from dupondje or Ubuntu and the version remains
unchanged in "About". If I look in synaptic, it does show the version
number I would expect it to. Also, in neither case can I get the
clipboard sync to work.

2012-05-02 Thread Martin G Miller
My entire home and all office computers are Ubuntu. (10.04 & 11.10)
They all need to remote desktop to a windows server. This cut/paste
problem is a total show stopper for me. I can't upgrade any of my
machines (about 10) until this is resolved. I know this post is not
very helpful, but I need to follow this thread. Thank you everyone for
your hard work.

[Bug 269851] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard/Mouse does not work anymore

2012-04-27 Thread Martin G Miller
This is what I am doing:
gksudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/97-bluetooth-hid2hci.rules

Look for the line under "# Logitech devices" that starts with:
KERNEL=="hiddev*"
and change it to:
KERNEL=="hidraw*"
The rest of the line is left as is. Save, restart.

[Bug 269851] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard/Mouse does not work anymore

2012-04-27 Thread Martin G Miller
This has been an ongoing problem, so I find out where the changes are
for the version I am about to upgrade to and then, after doing the
upgrade, but before you reboot, make the needed changes while your
keyboard is still working. Then when you reboot, it will continue to
work and you don't have to go hunting for a wired keyboard.

[Bug 872940] Re: Logitech Dinovo Bluetooth keyboard fails after upgrade to 11.10

2011-10-30 Thread Martin G Miller
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 123920 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/123920

theKing2...As long as you like all the other changes in 11.10, you can
try the upgrade. Just change the hiddev to hidraw and your
keyboard/trackpad should continue to work. In fact, now that I think of
it, if it was working before the upgrade, then perhaps you should make
the change as soon as the upgrade process is finished, but before you
reboot. That way your system should come back up with working keyboard.
Otherwise, you will have to plug in a wired USB keyboard/mouse to make
the change.

If you wait for this to be addressed by the Dev's, you might be waiting
till April 2012 and then it may still not be "fixed".

Something else to watch for is that after I got it working, there was a
bluetooth update that set the hidraw back to hiddev. I noticed it
before I rebooted, so I just changed the file back before rebooting and
didn't have any further trouble. The lesson here is to look at the
updates so you know what to expect before rebooting. This happened a
few weeks ago, so if you are just starting the process now, you already
have the "new" bluetooth update and don't have to worry.

If you are just doing the upgrade now, you only have to do the fix once.
If you are doing a clean install, then do all the updates after the
install before fixing the keyboard issue or you will just have to do it
again after the bluetooth update is applied.

[Bug 872940] [NEW] Logitech Dinovo Bluetooth keyboard fails after upgrade to 11.10

2011-10-12 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit upgraded from 11.04 on 12 Oct. 2011

What is expected to happen: The Logitech dinovo bluetooth keyboard/trackpad
should continue to work as before.
What happened instead: The keyboard now fails to connect and cannot be paired
with the bluetooth dialog.

The problem is in the udev rules. In 11.04 there was a special line in
/lib/udev/rules.d/70-hid2hci.rules for Logitech devices that started with
KERNEL=="hidraw*".
This is now missing in 11.10
I edited /lib/udev/rules.d/62-bluez-hid2hic.rules and changed the hiddev to
hidraw, saved the file and rebooted.
The keyboard and trackpad now work as expected.

The file as it exists now is less complex then the one in 11.04 as there
were several items listed in the Logitech section. I suspect that the
11.04 version allowed other logitech devices to work in hiddev mode.
Someone more knowledgeable then me needs to compare the 2 versions of
the file to ensure total compatibility.

The Logitech section from 11.04 looks like this:
# Logitech devices
KERNEL=="hiddev*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="046d", ATTRS{idProduct}=="c70[35e]", \
  RUN+="hid2hci --method=logitech-hid --devpath=%p"
KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="046d",
ATTRS{idProduct}=="c70[4abc]|c71[34bc]", \
  RUN+="hid2hci --method=logitech-hid --devpath=%p"

The Logitech section from 11.10 looks like this before modification:
# Logitech devices
KERNEL=="hiddev*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="046d",
ATTRS{idProduct}=="c70[345abce]|c71[34bc]", \
  RUN+="hid2hci --method=logitech-hid --devpath=%p"

This is what I changed it to:
# Logitech devices
KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="046d",
ATTRS{idProduct}=="c70[345abce]|c71[34bc]", \
  RUN+="hid2hci --method=logitech-hid --devpath=%p"

2011-10-12 Thread Martin G Miller
Total regression with this issue in 11.10 32 bit

I had this dinovo edge bluetooth keyboard/trackpad working perfectly in
11.04. Since the upgrade to 11.10 "Oneiric" I am back to not being
able to use it. It refuses to pair and the old entry (changing hiddraw
to hidraw) in lib/udev/rules.d/70-hid2hic.rules is gone. If I put it
in it still does not work. The bluetooth pairing apple just goes
around in circles, asking to enter a code number that appears on screen,
followed by a failed to pair. If you just try to use the keyboard
without running the bluetooth applet, it pops up a dialog asking to
grant permission, but checking the box and telling it grant does not
work. Also, my Apple magic track pad, which worked perfectly in 11.04
also fails to pair in 11.10. It now asks for a key which does not
exist. In 11.04 it just asked to pair and then worked.

[Bug 797941] Re: shotwell prints filename on all photos

2011-06-15 Thread Martin G Miller
Thank you. That "feature" was driving me crazy. I did a Google search
on this topic and it seemed to be something that you could not turn off.
Unchecking it seems to persist after I exit and restart Shotwell. Now I
can start to really look at the capabilities of the program to see if
it's a viable alternative to Picasa.

Is there any way to have it search on the name of the folders the
pictures are in as well as the individual file names? Picasa searches
this way and it greatly simplifies how I label pictures. I can have 30
images in a folder called "oliver" that have camera generated file
names, but in Picasa I just need to search on Oliver and it will find
them all. In Shotwell, I have to rename each individual picture.

Are there any other filters or effects that can be added to Shotwell,
the way you can add things to Gimp?

[Bug 797941] [NEW] shotwell prints filename on all photos

2011-06-15 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: shotwell

When attempting to print a photograph from Shotwell, the program
superimposes the file name at the bottom of the print, which appears in
the final print. There is no way to turn off this behavior. As a
result, I can't use Shotwell to produce prints suitable for framing.
Having the file name appear on the print may be useful for proofs, but
it's unsuitable for final prints.

[Bug 790023] Re: send to mail recipient option not present on right click of file in 11.04 Unity desktop

2011-06-10 Thread Martin G Miller
I have found a work around on the Ubuntu forums for this problem, but I
prefer to have the bug fixed through the normal update process. I have
not tried this myself yet. However, this may provide a valuable clue as
to the source of the bug.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10753508&postcount=5

The following is a quote from the above link:
Looks like nautilus-sendto is trying to use older versions of libraries.
Running the following fixed it for me:

[Bug 790023] [NEW] send to mail recipient option not present on right click of file in 11.04 Unity desktop

2011-05-29 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In all previous versions of Ubuntu/Gnome, right clicking a file gives a
context menu including the choice to "send to mail recipient". In 11.04
with the Unity DE, in both 32 and 64 bit versions, this option is
missing. The only choice seems to be a window that sends the file to
CD/DVD creator, instant message, bluetooth or removable disk. The
option of sending to an email recipient is gone.

Ubuntu 11.04 both 32 bit and 64 bit
Nautilus version: 1:2.32.2.1-0ubuntu13 (32 bit)

What I expected to happen:
Right click a file and the context menu allows you to quickly select Send to
email recipient.

What happened instead:
The right click context menu entry opens a window that only offers to send the
file to CD/DVD Creator

[Bug 255651] Re: floppy disk drive not detected (module not loaded) in Intrepid and Jaunty

2011-05-13 Thread Martin G Miller
For older motherboards that require a floppy to update the BIOS, it's
easily done from a bootable floppy disk. Back in the days when I used
to run Windows, I always did it that way because I didn't trust having
Windows running while doing something as critical as a BIOS update. The
OS installed on the HDD is irrelevant. As long as all the hardware is
correct and properly recognized by the motherboard, you don't even have
to have an OS installed to do a BIOS update and in fact, many system
builders will argue that it's a good idea to update the BIOS prior to
installing the OS.

I don't mean this to be a dismissal of the need for floppy support.
It's still needed by people for other use cases with devices that only
read/write their data to floppy. It's just that for BIOS management,
it's simply not needed.

If you read through the link provided in #108 above, you will find
several mentions of (relatively) simple cli solutions for mounting and
unmounting the floppy. These can be semi-automated to 1 click solutions
as launchers on the top panel. Not ideal, but a usable workaround till
this (hopefully) gets fixed.

[Bug 109446] Re: Need /proc/acpi/wakeup tweaks to enable mousepad and USB to wake up from suspend

2011-05-07 Thread Martin G Miller
I am running Natty final on an Atom nettop connected as a HTPC. This is
a badly needed feature. I finally figured out the commands to change
/proc/acpi/wakeup for USB0, et al, and it now works, but this should be
enabled "out of the box", or at least a GUI in gnome-power-manager.

[Bug 747463] Re: Ubuntu 11.04 Mail Notification needs to be included in systray to show number of emails in mailboxes

2011-04-21 Thread Martin G Miller
I have been using the mail notification icon in the top panel for the
last few years in Ubuntu and I find it extremely useful. When I
started trying unity, I realized it was difficult if not impossible to
add functions to the top panel. In the 11.04 repositories, indicator-
weather is notable for being a good example of how to get around this
problem. It integrates perfectly with the unity top panel and has
configurable pop up alerts for weather changes. If the Mail-
notification applet can be rewritten to function the way the indicator-
weather applet works, I think we would all be happy.

Perhaps this calls for a whole new class of rewritten apps, called
indicator-foo that are designed around the new top panel.

[Bug 713838] Re: gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive

2011-03-14 Thread Martin G Miller
Paolo, you need to right click Applications the select "Edit Menus". In the
resulting window, select Graphics on the left side and then on the right side,
right click gThumb Photo Import Tool. Select Properties and in the resulting
window, change the command in the "Command" box to read:
sh -c 'gphoto2 ; exec gthumb --import-photos'
It's easiest to just blank out the old command and paste in the one I wrote
above.
Once the new command is in the box, just click "Close" and close out of the
menu editor.

If your camera is already connected, disconnect it. Then the next time
you plug it in and set it to upload, everything should work as before.
Some of the choices in the new version of the import tool have been
moved to the "Preferences" button, so look at that once it runs.

OK, I got it to work. Based on your comments, I changed the command in the

sh -c 'gphoto2 ; exec gthumb --import-photos'

more.
Thanks for the clues.

[Bug 713838] Re: gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive

2011-03-14 Thread Martin G Miller
As a work around, I am using Shotwell to import from my camera. It does
a good job and allows me to erase from the camera after importing. I am
not crazy about the way it organizes the imported pictures by date,
several layers deep. I just tell it to save to my desktop and then move
the pictures around to where I want them from there. I still use gthumb
as my basic photo editor when I don't want to fire up gimp. For actual
picture managment, I use Picasa 3.0 installed from the Google testing
repositories. This is a truly amazing application.

[Bug 713847] [NEW] nautilus closes on cut/paste of file over VPN

2011-02-05 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 upgraded from 10.04
nautilus: Installed: 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1.3
What I expected:
I open a VPN tunnel from my home to my office every day. I then open a saved
bookmark of a folder that contains several subfolders on the remote (Windows XP
Pro sp2) server. I then scan documents on the Ubuntu computer to pdf format
which I then cut and paste to the appropriate folder on the server. As i cut
and paste to the various sub folders, the files transfer to the destination
folders without incident.
I have been doing this for a few years without problems.

What happens instead:
Cut and paste of file or files results in most of the files being transferred
to the destination followed by the nautilus destination window closing. The
VPN is still open and shows mounted on my desktop. I have to reopen the saved
bookmark to get back to the area I want to cut and paste the next document(s)
into. This happens every time.

If I do a copy/paste instead of a cut/paste, the destination window
remains open.

I have also found that if I try to navigate into subfolders, I can go
into them, but often when backing back out, the window will close the
same way it does on a cut/paste.

[Bug 713838] [NEW] gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive

2011-02-05 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

After upgrading 64 bit 10.04 to 10.10 gthumb no longer loads pictures from my
canon SD550 digital camera when connected by USB.
Version of gthumb is 3:2.11.3-2build1
What was expected is a normal gthumb import session which reads the camera and
presents the pictures for importing.
What happened instead:
You get a popup window which says "Could not load the folder DBus error
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "QueryInfo" with signature
"aysus" on interface "org.gtk.vfs.Mount" doesn't exist".

After closing that popup, gthumb then loads a pictures folder that is on an
sata hard drive that is mounted and used as my backup drive. The drop down
list in the picture importer only shows "backup" as the source of the photos.

I have tried changing the command for gthumb importer from:
sh -c 'gvfs-mount -u ~/.gvfs/gphoto2*; exec gthumb --import-photos'

to:
sh -c 'gvfs-mount -s gphoto2 ; sleep 3 ; exec gthumb --import-photos'

as this was needed to get it to work in 10.04, but it has no effect in
10.10.

If I take the memory card out of the camera and put it in an external
card reader, gthumb will import the pictures as expected.

Shotwell, the new default picture import application in 10.10, has no
problems seeing and importing photos from the camera.

[Bug 269851] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard/Mouse does not work anymore

2011-01-31 Thread Martin G Miller
I also recently did a 9.10 to 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade (32 bit) on an old
Dell notebook I decided to use as a HT computer. It only has a single
USB 1.1 port that the dongle is plugged into. My Dinovo did not work
until I finished the upgrade to 10.04, then it was fine and continued
working fine throughout the upgrade process from 10.04 to 10.10, and
continued to work as expected after the final upgrade. Although I did
not need to, have you tried just unplugging and replugging the dongle?
Did you try the buttons on the keyboard and dongle to make them see each
other again? That may be all it takes.

[Bug 637702] Re: Prompted to unlock keyring twice on log in

2011-01-27 Thread Martin G Miller
"You should see the same window that pops up every time you try to
restart your machine." Is wrong. The window that pops up is one that
will ask you for the old password and the new one. Sorry for the
inaccuracy. Also, I mention this as a temporary fix, but for many
people, they may elect to leave it this way permanently.

[Bug 637702] Re: Prompted to unlock keyring twice on log in

2011-01-27 Thread Martin G Miller
I also have this issue after upgrading 64 bit 10.04 to 10.10. I am
asked for login keyring 4 times. It should be noted that you should
only do this if its your own machine at home and you are not worried
about others getting access to it. You are about to unencrypt your
passwords if you follow the instructions below.

As a temporary fix: System > Preferences > Passwords & Encryption Keys.
In the Passwords tab, mine shows Passwords:login. Do not click to open
its drop down list. Simply right click the words Passwords:login and
then select "change password". You should see the same window that pops
up every time you try to restart your machine. Enter your current
password in the "Old Password" field and then hit the tab key twice to
move focus to the "Password" and "Confirm" fields, leaving each one
blank. When you click "OK", it will ask "Store passwords Unencrypted?"
You can then click on the "Use Unsafe Storage" button and that should do
it.

[Bug 90524] Re: Time-admin's "Synchronize Now" should be enabled even in NTP mode

2010-11-07 Thread Martin G Miller
This is still a problem in 64 bit Lucid. I noticed my clock was off by
several minutes and went into system > Admin > Time & Date to set it and
discovered that it was set to manual. I set it to use a time server on
the internet and when I was done, it still displayed the wrong time.
There is no "synchronize now" button, either grayed out or otherwise. I
tried logging off and on, but that made no difference. On going back to
Time & Date, I noticed it was set back to Manual mode and again set it
synch with time servers, but no change happened. I finally set the
clock manually, but don't know if it's going to stay synced with correct
time of not.

[Bug 269851] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard/Mouse does not work anymore

2010-10-15 Thread Martin G Miller
This bug appears resolved in Maverick. I have tried both 32 bit and 64
bit versions of 10.10 and the Dinovo keyboard works perfectly with no
configuration. They have rewritten the 70-hid2hci.rules to include both
hidraw and hiddev lines for 2 different classes of Logitech devices.
This seems to have done the trick.

[Bug 443121] Re: With Bindwood installed, Firefox is completely unresponsive

2010-05-09 Thread Martin G Miller
I just updated my system to lucid 64 bit. I have been using Ubuntu One
for backups since Karmic without problems. As soon as i installed and
enabled the bindwood extension, FF 3.6 became unresponsive. I do have
over a 100 bookmarks, including some live ones. As long as i disable
the bindwood extension, FF 3.6 is very quick. With it enabled, it's not
usable.

[Bug 269851] Re: Bluetooth Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard/Mouse dones not work anymore

2010-05-08 Thread Martin G Miller
After doing a 9.10 to 10.04 upgrade, I noticed on the first boot that a
screen appeared asking for permission for my Logitch bluetooth
keyboard/trackpad (Dinovo Edge) to connect. There was also a check box
to "always remember" this setting.

Unfortunately, while I was reading it, after about 10 seconds, it timed
out and closed. I could not figure out how to get that dialog back and
the Dinovo edge did not work. I hooked up a Ps2 keyboard and mouse and
followed the instructions in Post #25 by Tommy.

That worked and my Dinovo edge is back to normal. The file the
instructions tell you to edit has a warning in it saying not to edit
this file because it will be overwritten on subsequent upgrades, so this
is just a temporary work around.

Assuming the dialog that showed on first boot would have fixed the
issue, there should not be a timeout on it. It should stay up until
dismissed. There should also be some way to get it to come back.
Rebooting the machine did not help. Once timed out, the dialog will not
come back. Also, even if it stayed on screen, you could not use the
Dinovo Edge to click it, because it doesn't have permission to connect
yet, so you need time to hook up another keyboard.

Why was the default changed in the 70-hid2hci.rules from hidraw to
hiddev for 10.04? I assume there had to be a good reason, but it
negatively impacts Logitech bluetooth keyboards.

[Bug 389909] Re: Change resolve order so Nautilus can browse local network when ISP uses DNS redirection

2010-04-15 Thread Martin G Miller
As the original poster of this thread, I thought I would add another 2
cents. I discovered my ISP (Cablevision in New York), offers the
ability to "opt out" of DNS redirection. This is not widely
disseminated knowledge and it is almost impossible to find unless you
know it exists.

I changed my status to "opted-out" for DNS rerdirection both on my home
and office networks and I have had no further problems in any new
installs of 9.04, 9.10 or 10.04 beta that I have tried on either
network.

As far as I can tell, this problem still remains and the only viable
fixes are to use one of the following techinques:

1) Change the resolve order in /etc/samba/smb.conf
2) Use a public DNS server like Google as mentioned in #12 above
3) If your ISP allows, opt out of DNS redirection.

[Bug 367767] Re: the system freeze when I insert an audio cd

2010-03-20 Thread Martin G Miller
OOPS!, I made a slight mistake in the key sequence I listed in my last post. I
meant to say the Print Screen (sysreq) key, NOT the Scroll Lock key.
That's what I get for doing a quick post here before my morning coffee.

Sorry about that

[Bug 367767] Re: the system freeze when I insert an audio cd

2010-03-20 Thread Martin G Miller
For Dibya Sanyal...this is not a fix for the bug, just a work around so
you don't have to hard reboot.

If you hold down the alt and scroll lock (sysreq) keys and while holding
them down, press k, you should restart x without having to reboot.

This can also be set back to the old standard of ctrl / alt / backspace
in Karmic by going to System > Preferences > Keyboard and then on the
Layouts tab, Click on "Layout Options" and you will see a list of
items. Click the triangle next to "key sequence to kill the x server"
and put a check mark in the box next to "Control + Alt + Backspace" box,
then click close.

If all this does not work, a safe way to force a reboot is to again hold
down the alt and scroll lock (sysreq) keys and while holding them down,
press in sequence, r s e i u b. Even when the system appears totally
locked up, this "should" work.

[Bug 510661] Re: cheese fails in 64 bit with infinite loop in terminal

2010-01-21 Thread Martin G Miller
I found the problem. It was my fault. I needed to use some extra
commands from an earlier install in 9.04 to get cheese to run picking a
certain input from a tv tuner card I have and that was in
/home/marty/bin/cheese. When I did the clean install of 64 bit karmic,
I just copied over my ~bin directory from my old install because there
were other scripts in there I needed.

The program execution path looked in ~ before going to /usr/bin and ran
my old script, creating the problem. Removing my old script and
changing the Application preferences back to "cheese" in the menu editor
now has cheese working as expected after a normal install.

I apologize for wasting everyones time on this.

[Bug 510661] [NEW] cheese fails in 64 bit with infinite loop in terminal

2010-01-21 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cheese

Clean install of 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 all up to date. Installed cheese from
synaptic package manager without errors.
Cheese is v. 2.28.1-0ubuntu1 (karmic)

What is expected:
Run cheese off the applications menu without errors.

What happened instead:
You get an entry in the bottom panel that says "Starting Cheese" that vanishes
after a few seconds. The system then slows to a crawl. Opening system manager
shows cheese "sleeping" or "zombied" with hundreds of entries with the hard
drive running non stop. Opening a terminal, you must enter the command
"killall cheese" several times ( at least 7 or 8) quickly until you get the "no
process found" error. If you only issue the command once or twice, cheese
keeps spawning new entries in system manager.

Attempting to start cheese in terminal gives infinite loop of:
/home/marty/bin/cheese: line 2: v4l2-ctl: command not found
/home/marty/bin/cheese: line 2: v4l2-ctl: command not found
/home/marty/bin/cheese: line 2: v4l2-ctl: command not found
/home/marty/bin/cheese: line 2: v4l2-ctl: command not found
/home/marty/bin/cheese: line 2: v4l2-ctl: command not found

This line will repeat until the terminal is closed.

If you do a tab complete on v4l2 in terminal, it shows the correct
command should be v4l2ctrl NOT v4l2-ctrl

[Bug 466066] Re: System Monitor display is corrupt after upgrade to 9.10

2009-12-06 Thread Martin G Miller
I have a Dell C510 with ATI mobility M6 LY graphics 16 MB video ram. I
have the same corruption problem. Setting to EXA resolves the
corruption, but the system becomes so slow to refresh windows, that I
went back to the stock XAA acceleration. I would prefer to see a fix in
the radeon drivers. This may have something to do with ATI cards with
low memory. Unfortunately, there is no way to allocate more ram to
video in my BIOS.

My work around for this is now to simply log off and log back on after

[Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2009-12-02 Thread Martin G Miller
I have a Dell C510 with the radeon mobility M6 ly video and in Karmic,
using no xorg.conf or one with xaa acceleration causes the screen
garbling noted above. I also can't run system monitor or some of the
screen savers without getting a badly distorted window or no display at
all.

Creating an xorg.conf and changing to exa allows everything to display
correctly, but the video performance is badly degraded. I have not
experienced any lockups in either mode.
