Re: [Bug 1052873] Re: network-manager tries to connect to eth0 when cable is unplugged -- Intel 82577LM e1000e
Sorry for the long delay. I now think that this bug was not fixed in any of these mainline kernels, but that, instead, it generally takes several suspend cycles for it to show up. Since I have been rebooting frequently into different kernels to test this and other bugs, I wasn't seeing the bug! But now I've had a chance to spend a good deal of time in all the kernels, and have seen it in all of them. I'm tempted to think it's a problem with network-manager, but not based on any really good grounds. Thanks, Matt On 12-09-26 01:57 PM, Joseph Salisbury wrote: > I'd like to perform a reverse bisect to figure out which commit upstream > fixes this regression. Public bug reported: Libreoffice cannot "see" the various java installations on my computer If I manually enter a path, like /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre, the attempt fails with the message "the folder you have selected does not contain a java runtime environment". In a previous post i asserted that turning off gnome-screensaver stops these crashes from happening. This turns out not to be the case. Unfortunately, I am having trouble capturing an xtrace of the crash -- it almost seems as if xtrace itself somehow protects the driver from the crash! -- anyway, I'm finding that I can sometimes recover from the crash by switching to VT1 and running DISPLAY=:0 unity DISPLAY=:0 xtrace compiz --replace > ~/trace.txt But usually I'll end up with some problems, like all window management being switched off so that it seems as though compiz isn't running at all. And sometimes this attempt at recovery will fail almost completely, in that I just end up with an unchanging image of my desktop wallpaper (sometimes the active windows will flash briefly when I switch to VT7, then disappear behind the wallpaper. I'm really not sure what the next steps in diagnosis are, htough I'll keep trying to capture an xtrace. This is on a Lenovo Thikpad T410, wiht intel graphics & (of course) the i965 driver. [Bug 709461] Re: Application windows can sometimes fail to display and will mask regions of the screen
I'm seeing a similar problem (invisible window) on a thinkpad T410 running oneiric. I'm pasting in some recent comments from the bug I reported (lp:921094) and my xwininfo -all output on the dead zones/invisible windows. Thanks, Matt: managed to get the problem back, but the dead zone/inviisible window is not in this case identical to the switcher. The attached output of xwininfo -all describes an area slightly below the switcher, slightly shorter, and approximately the same width (I can't seem to get xwininfo data on the switcher itself, sorry). By bringing a full-screen terminal window to the front of the window stack, I was able to visually trace the approximate dimensions of the dead zone (because the cursor shape changes visibly). I also found a second very small dead zone in the upper right quadrant -- very oddly, the xwininfo output for that second, very small, dead zone is identical to the output of the first window. I can't really see why that would be the case, but am also attaching that output to this bug report. xwininfo -all doesn't really seem like enough info to figure out which application is responsible for spawning, then abandoning this window. Is there anything else I can do? I'll try to hold off on restarting compiz for a while in case you have suggestions. ** Attachment added: "output of xwininfo -all" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/709461/+attachment/2703448/+files/xwininfo.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/709461 Title: Application windows can sometimes fail to display and will mask regions of the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/709461/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 921094] [NEW] Mouse clicks impossible in central region of screen
Public bug reported: I'm running into a problem on Oneiric with my THikpad T410, in which it becomes impossible to click in a certain region of the screen -- fairly central both verticlaly and horizontel. two-finger mouse scrolling also fials to work, indictaing that there's some general mouse button override coming into play. I notice it most frequently in firefox and chrome, but once it's happened I can verify that it also is occurring e.g. in emacs. This behavious starts somewhat unpredictably but doesn't seem to halt even on e.g. resume from sleep. Clicking is impossible with both the upper (trackpoint) and lower (trackpad) buttons on my laptop, which are associated with different pointing devices, so I don't think this is a hardware or driver problem, but of course I can't be sure. [Bug 783498] Re: add per-window ("window-centric") window management to Unity (launcher and/or compiz)
Not sure if this thread is really the best place for this -- but something that REALLY bothers me on this is how hard it makes to do research, or any kind of task that involves moving data from one application from another. So, for instance, I'm currently doing a project that involves a lot of cutting and pasting between a firefox window and a text document. In the old days I would have sized the two windows side-by-side (and possibly used a window manager that allows me to do this very quickly), and then moved fluidly back and forth between them. Now switching between applications ruins this setup, because other firefox/emacs windows obscure my view of the complementary window when I switch applications. If I try using Libreoffice, the effect is even worse, because every document is necessarily opened in a separate window there. If Unity isn't the place to fix this, what kind of utility ought to be developed? I've been using Unity now for about 2 months, hoping to get used to it; and I like many bits of the experience, but this single feature is greatly reducing my work efficiency and I'm wondering if I'll just have to switch to Mint, or Kubuntu, in order to fix it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/783498 Title: add per-window ("window-centric") window management to Unity (launcher and/or compiz) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/783498/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

yes, pretty much; thanks for alerting me to this, I was at a bit of a loss, is it in the docs somewhere? Public bug reported: On a recent oneiric install, I am unable to cycle between windows or between windows within an application. [Bug 710796] Re: [regression] hibernate no longer works on natty
Just echoing Johns (comment 315) here. There's a very reliable tuxonice ppa currently tracking maverick; I use it on all my machines and none of them currently has hibernation problems. The old argument against tuxoice was that the diff against the upstream kernel was too onerous to maintain. But if itworks, and upstream hibernation doesn't, it's not clear that this argument is really very compelling. Comments already demonstrate that hibernation is an essential feature for many people in many use cases, especially since suspend-to-ram is broken for many users. ppa: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tuxonice/tuxonice-testing/ubuntu maverick main deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tuxonice/ppa/ubuntu maverick main -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/710796 Title: [regression] hibernate no longer works on natty -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic
Zach, sorry for the delay. so far no real help from realtek though they are at least responding, and I think they want to help. I'm attaching the tarball they sent me with a new version -- it makes no difference to me but might make some difference to others. They say they can't reproduce the bug with powertop, though that seems unlikely to me. Anyway I have asked them to subscribe to this bug and am also writing to the powertop list asking for pointers... this is pretty frustrating but maybe it will eventually get resolved. Here are the instructions they sent me: Please find the latest RTL8191SE Linux driver source in the attachment and try again. You should clear previous drive or inbox driver first after you install this driver source. The previous driver will be stored within /lib/modules/2.6.XXX/kernel/driver/staging. Please remove "r8192se_pci.ko" files by following command. 1. sudo su (you should input you root password after it) 2. find /lib/modules/ -name "r8192se_*.ko" -exec ls -l {} \; 3. find /lib/modules/ -name "r8192se_*.ko" -exec rm {} \; After, You could execute "find /lib/modules/ -name "r8192se_*.ko" -exec ls -l {} \;" to confirm it's clear properly. And then, install this driver source as below steps. Don't forget to extract this package before you install it. 1. sudo su 2. make 3. make install 4. reboot 5. ./wlan0up or ./wlan1up - they also suggested installing the new firmware before building the module -- this is easy, just move the old /lib/firmware/RTL8192SE folder somewhere safe, and replace it with the firmware/RTL8192SE folder you find in the tarball after extraction. hope that helps.. ** Attachment added: "rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0525.2010.tar.gz" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/51243547/rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0525.2010.tar.gz -- [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585938 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 592745] Re: kernel panic - kernel stack corrupted
hi jeremy, my mistake, failed to read back in my earlier comments. The bug is *not* in fact gone in the mainline kernels -- it appeared to be gone only because the rtl8192se modules are missing from mainline. Once loaded rtl8192se_pci will continue to cause the crash. I doubt there's an upstream fix -- realtek has no public bug tracker that i can find & their most recent driver does not fix the issue. It'd be great if someone could identify what call is made to the driver to cause it to crash, and then stop the call from being made, but I can imagine that's unlikely to hapen (& i hve no idea how to go about that myself). thanks again, m -- kernel panic - kernel stack corrupted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/592745 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 567016] Re: Wireless won't work on Lenovo Thinkpad T510
At least some people are reporting kernel panics with the Realtek closed-source drivers (one here, 3 more on lp:585938). 1) can anyone subscribed to this bug test whether running powertop with the r8192se_pci module loaded causes a kernel panic (running in a VT at least lets you see the kernel panic message, so you know what's happening)? 2) anyone have any ideas how to report bugs to the Realtek upstream? 3) given that the crash is reliably caused by powertop, does anyone have workaround ideas (that is, what does powertop do to cause the crash, and can we stop whatever other processes are doing that same thing from performing that action? [Bug 572986] Re: lose X display periodiclly; switching VT's restores it
i can see there are some more severe intel-related bugs but this one is not insignificant for me -- it means among other things that none of my family members can ever use my computer, since they can't reset the vt. Are there any workarounds or suggestions? Would it make sense to try oneo f the many ppas wtih newer intel drivers, e.g. the 2.11git ppa (https://launchpad.net/~glasen/+archive/intel-driver)? Alternatively cn i do some testing? [Bug 456547] Re: [RV100] fonts not displayed in certain apps
** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg after upgrading intrepid->jaunty->intrepid, i had serious font problems on my thinkpad x31 (radeon mobility M6 LY), such that many paplications (openoffice, emacs, and others) didn't display fonts at all when run under non-gnome desktops. i've now wiped the drive and installed karmic clean; now the problem is partly fixed, but certain programs won't display fonts at all, even when run undergnome. the ost crippling of these for me is the goggles music manager, which uses the libfox1.6 toolkit. But the same problem is evident in the transient system messages (e.g. nm-applet's connected/disconnected messages, evolution's 'you have mail' bubbles). I'd love to help track this bug down but i'm not sure where to start. please let me know what i might do to help. thanks, matt ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Tue Oct 20 14:09:47 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 Lsusb: - Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub - Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub - Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub - Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub + Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub + Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub + Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub + Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub MachineType: IBM 2672CBU Package: xserver-xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu5 PccardctlIdent: - Socket 0: -no product info available - Socket 1: -no product info available + Socket 0: + no product info available + Socket 1: + no product info available PccardctlStatus: - Socket 0: -no card - Socket 1: -no card + Socket 0: + no card + Socket 1: + no card ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=UUID=416a7883-6c4d-4b46-9a74-9d12b1c110fb ro quiet splash ProcEnviron: - LANG=en_CA.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash + LANG=en_CA.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic RelatedPackageVersions: - xserver-xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu5 - libgl1-mesa-glx 7.6.0-1ubuntu4 - libdrm2 2.4.14-1ubuntu1 - xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 - xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.2-2ubuntu5 + xserver-xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu5 + libgl1-mesa-glx 7.6.0-1ubuntu4 + libdrm2 2.4.14-1ubuntu1 + xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 + xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.2-2ubuntu5 SourcePackage: xorg Uname: Linux 2.6.31-14-generic i686 XsessionErrors: - (gnome-settings-daemon:5287): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed - (gnome-settings-daemon:5287): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed - (openbox:5229): Openbox-WARNING **: Openbox is configured for 2 desktops, but the current session has 1.
