[Bug 1607067] Re: Add a dotfiles / hidden files interface

2016-08-26 Thread Matthew Williams
This bug was mentioned in this thread on the list
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/snapcraft/2016-August/000854.html

It's not strictly snappy related, but is snap related. It's hard to
write snaps for editors like vim/ emacs etc as these would be expected
to have access to all files in home, even hidden files

Yeah, this is why I ended up getting rid of my razerblade. If razer ever
adds linux support (since steam is embracing linux as a gaming platform), I
may return.

[Bug 279890] Re: Transmission crashes: "corrupted double-linked list"

2014-07-01 Thread Matthew Williams
I was running into a similar issue, but was able to resolve it with a
less drastic approach. I ran strace on transmission-daemon and it
showed a stat of a torrent .part file just before the SIGSEGV. I move
the associated .resume file out of tranmission/resume and transmission-
daemon started right up. I then requested a verify of that same
torrent, just to make sure everything was good.

The interesting part is that the final couple of stats in the strace
returned ENOENT (No such file or directory).

Hope this helps the next person.

BTW, this was on a Ubuntu Server 10.04 box with transmission 1.93. Yes,
I am slow to upgrade but I still have a few months left!

[Bug 1315360] Re: [Razer Blade] Trackpad detected as mouse only

2014-05-29 Thread Matthew Williams
So, canonical upgraded the LTS kernel in the package manager from
3.13.0-24 to 3.13.0-27. When I tried building the driver in the -27
kernel, I could not get it to build. Anybody else have this problem?
Switched back to the 3.14.1 kernel, it builds/installs with no
problems. However, I have noticed a bug with both the 3.14.1 and
3.13.0-27 kernel (with driver installed). If I have my portable HD
plugged in at boot, it causes a significant delay before I can use the
trackpad (~5mins). And it is buggy when it does start. Leaving the
drive unplugged at boot and it works flawlessly.

[Bug 1315360] Re: [Razer Blade] Trackpad detected as mouse only

2014-05-26 Thread Matthew Williams
Jason, when I was using the 3.15.0-rc2 kernel with 14.04 I found it to
be buggy even without the driver (e.g. complications with the package
manager). I can confirm that the driver works near flawlessly with my
Razerblade 14' 2013 edition with both the 3.13.0 and 3.14.1 kernel. The
only features that don't work are pinch-to-zoom. Even horizontal
scrolling and three-finger tapping works. Maybe you could try using the
14.10 build that is using the 3.15.0 rc7 kernel.

[Bug 1315360] Re: [Razer Blade] Trackpad detected as mouse only

2014-05-24 Thread Matthew Williams
This solution worked for me. Both two-finger scrolling and two-finger-
tap right click are working. You will want to have install make, git,
and build-essential. Git may ask for a username/password the first time,
so you might want to set up your github account beforehand (I've
attached the solution as an attachment to this message if you choose not
to use git). Then type the following commands in a terminal without
quotes:

 Navigate to the home directory
"cd ~/"

Use git to download source files
"git clone https://github.com/aduggan/hid-rmi.git -b rb14"

(enter username and password if it asks for it)

Enter inside the directory of the downloaded files:
"cd hid-rmi"

Use sudo to build and install:

"sudo make"
"sudo make install"

You will get a message after typing "make install." It will say
something about a private key missing and DEPMOD. This doesn't mean it
did not install, so ignore it. Then type:

"sudo depmod -a"

Reboot.
Trackpad scrolling and two-finger tap should work. I'm using Kubuntu 14.04
with standard kernel.

2014-05-17 Thread Matthew Williams
I followed the conversation at
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1410745. They have gotten

the driver can be found at https://github.com/aduggan/hid-rmi.git

I downloaded and was able to make the package, but when I tried "sudo
make install" I got an error message saying "can't read private key".

[Bug 655422] Re: Sending pdf and ps files to a printer routinely fails, but removing all personal GNOME/GTK config solves problem

2010-12-17 Thread Matthew Williams
I solved this problem for my HP3055 by deleting the printer from the
server and recreating it. However, instead of choosing the
"recommended" driver which is Postscript based, I chose the PCL one
instead. I haven't had a problem since.

I don't think that this is a true solution, as I am simply avoiding the
chain of processing elements (ps2ps, pdf2ps) that I believe was causing
my issue. However, my printer now works!

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-raw-thumbnailer

In the Hardy 2.0.1-0ubuntu5 gnome-raw-thumbnailer package, the gnome
schema XML file only includes the image/x-dcraw mime type. However,
/usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml has unique mime types for
each camera raw format. The freedesktop mime types override the
/usr/share/mime/package/gnome-raw-thumbnailer.xml mime definition and
the thumbnailer fails to trigger.

To fix this problem, the schema file /usr/share/gconf/schemas/gnome-raw-
thumbnailer.schemas needs to be updated to include not only
image/x-dcraw, but the other mime types defined in the
freedesktop.org.xml file.

In my case, my camera generates .crw raw files. By changing the
references in the schema file from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to @x-canon-crw, the
thumbnailer correctly triggers.

** Affects: gnome-raw-thumbnailer (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 182731] Re: Provide a lib32asound2-plugins package

2008-04-21 Thread Matthew Williams
When running gizmo with the updated ia32-libs, I get the following
swears:

ALSA lib control.c:874:(snd_ctl_open_conf) Cannot open shared library
/usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_pulse.so
ALSA lib control.c:874:(snd_ctl_open_conf) Cannot open shared library

ALSA lib pcm.c:2106:(snd_pcm_open_conf) Cannot open shared library
/usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so

Notice that the 64 bit versions of the libraries are being referenced, not the
ones in /usr/lib32. Here is the output from ldd /usr/bin/gizmo | grep asound:
libasound.so.2 => /usr/lib32/libasound.so.2 (0xf716e000)

So, it looks like gizmo is loading the correct 32 bit version of the
asound library, but then that library is trying to load the 64 bit
plugins which fails miserably. Is there a way to get the 32 bit version
of libasound to look in /usr/lib32/alsa-lib instead of /usr/lib/alsa-
lib?

2008-04-21 Thread Matthew Williams
Adding a comment here so others can find it. Gizmo5, a 32 bit app,
seems to require the lib32nss-mdns package to successfully connect. The
above fix has the side-effect of "uninstalling" the lib32nss-mdns

Explicity installing lib32nss-mdns restores gizmo connectivity.

[Bug 191512] Re: gnome displays nfs mounts on the desktop

2008-03-23 Thread Matthew Williams
The behaviour that I am seeing in Hardy is different from Feisty and
Gutsy and, IMHO, is not wanted behaviour. Reading my initial comment, I
can see that I was not 100% clear. Let me rephrase:

- let the username be "myusername"
- /home/myusername is an empty mountpoint
- when myusername logs in via gdm, pam_mount mounts a crypted block device at
/home/myusername
- /home/myusername appears as an icon on the Desktop for the user myusername
This icon did NOT appear in Feisty and Gutsy

The reason I believe that this is a related problem is that the original
bug report is about Nautilus displaying unwanted mounted volumes that
were automatically mounted. If you believe that this is wanted
behaviour then I would question why the behaviour in Feisty and Gutsy is
different. If you believe that this is an unrelated issue to the NFS
one, then I will raise a new bug report.

thanks!

[Bug 191512] Re: gnome displays nfs mounts on the desktop

2008-03-23 Thread Matthew Williams
Another example of this problem: I use pam_mount to automagically mount
a crypt filesystem under /home/myusername. I now see an icon for
/home/myusername on my Desktop that was not present in Feisty. This is
on Hardy Beta with updates as of 2008-03-23.

As a workaround, setting /apps/nautilus/icon_view/volumes_visible to
false makes this icon disappear but also makes useful icons disappear as
well (e.g. USB flash disks).

[Bug 112391] Re: some apps print in landscape, and badly

2008-02-01 Thread Matthew Williams
I had a similar problem to this and traced it down to the HPLIP stuff. I fixed
it by
- opening the HPLIP toolbox
- choosing my printer
- going to print settings
- changing orientation to portrait

For some reason HPLIP had chosen reverse landscape for my newly
installed printer. My guess is that firefox and others do not send a
"use portrait for this page" control signal if they believe that the
default mode is portrait. Note that this HPLIP setting is independent
of the CUPS setting. I'm not sure how to two settings work with each
other.

2008-01-21 Thread Matthew Williams
I have also experienced X lock-ups with the new 8.3 xserver-xorg-core.
In a period of 2 hours, I had to reboot 3 times due to these lockups.
Since downgrading to xserver-xorg-core_1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8_amd64,
everything is stable again.

Note that my lock-ups have nothing to do with suspend, but this bug seemed too
similar to be a coincidence:
- new problem with 8.3
- X locks up
- fixed by reverting xserver-xorg-core

My specs: Core 2, running 64 bit Gutsy with latest patches, save for
xorg-server-core, using "intel" driver

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2007-10-13 Thread Matthew Williams
There are actually two differences between standard gutsy and what I
tested. First, there's the patch. Second, it a different version of
the fglrx package - 8.41.7 vs 8.37.6.

It's quite possible that the suspend issue is fixed by using the latest
module in combination with the patch. There could be a completely
separate issue causing my resume to fail OR it could be a issue with
8.41.7 in combination with gutsy. I would think it most likely to be
the latter.

Now, I haven't stuck with 8.41.7 because there seems to be a bug with
tv-out support and I require it. However, I would be willing to run
additional tests if others have suggestions on what I can do to further
diagnose 8.41.7.

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2007-10-13 Thread Matthew Williams
Semi-success. Using the fglrx module patch above, my NC6000
successfully gets into sleep mode. However, it hangs hard when waking
up. The early stages of waking up go ok but then the machine locks up
after what looks like a video mode switch.

FYI, the instructions on the web page need a couple of amendments:
- build the package for ubuntu/gutsy, not ubuntu/feisty
- delete the existing module in the volatile module directory, do not create
the symbolic link

Also, to get this to work, you need to expand /usr/src/fglrx.tar.bz2,
patch the header file and then rebuild the tarball so that when module-
assistant expands the tarball, it gets a patched copy of the header
file.

[Bug 74034] Re: Serial ports of some HP Laptops don't work in Edgy

2007-07-18 Thread Matthew Williams
Dirk,

Try using a program like minicom to access the serial port. If you
haven't used minicom before, run "sudo minicom -s" to set up the port
parameters like port name, baudrate, framing and flow control.

Another thing to check is the existance of a ttyS0 lock file in
/var/lock. It should be called /var/lock/LCK..ttyS0. At least, that's
what's created on my machine when minicom is accessing the serial port.
The contents of this file should contain information about the process
that holds the lock.

The PNP disable/enable trick works for me. I now have a fully
operational serial port. As I said, I do not know why the serial port
isn't being correctly setup on boot, so if my work-around doesn't work
for you, there's not much that I can do to help.

[Bug 74034] Re: Serial ports of some HP Laptops don't work in Edgy

2007-07-17 Thread Matthew Williams
Dirk,

I MAY have figured out a work-around. Try the following and see if it
fixes your problem. I am not sure why this problem occurs, but
disabling and then re-enabling the PNP serial port seems to correctly
initialize it. For some reason the newer kernels aren't correctly
enabling our serial ports. I couldn't see a reason after a look through
the two sets of kernel sources (dapper and feisty).

- cd /sys/bus/pnp/devices/00:02
- confirm that PNP device 00:02 is your serial port by doing a cat on
"resources". It should show the standard ttyS0 serial port stuff with io ports
starting at 3f8 and IRQ 4
- disable this device by "echo -n 2 > power/state"
- re-enable this device by "echo -n 0 > power/state"

In src/vpn-manager/nm-vpn-service.c, the function
nm_vpn_service_stage4_ip_config_get parses the dbus message that
contains the DNS information. It calls nm_vpn_connection_set_config
which eventually calls nm_system_should_modify_resolv_conf. Normally,
it seems that network-manager assumes that dhclient, for example, looks
after updating /etc/resolv.conf if resolvconf is installed. There is no
accounting for the case where a vpn client wishes to set DNS information
and resolvconf is installed.

I am not sure of the cleanest way to fix this problem. There is
currently no way to indicate to to network-manager that it is
responsible for setting DNS settings, even if resolvconf is installed.
It would be nice for a parameter to be added to the "config" data that
indicates that network-manager should call resolvconf if the parameter
is set and if resolvconf is installed. In other words, there should be
three possibilities:

1. resolvconf is not installed, always modify /etc/resolv.conf manually
2. resolvconf is installed and another element, like dhclient, will look after
calling resolvconf
3. resolvconf is installed and network-manager must call resolvconf OR modify
/etc/resolv.conf manually.

It is case 3 that is currently not handled.

[Bug 107564] DNS settings not changed for openvpn if resolvconf installed

2007-04-18 Thread Matthew Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

The patch package "network-manager-
openvpn_0.3.2svn2342-0ubuntu3.diff.gz" contains 05-debian_backend.patch
which in turn contains the following diff lines:

@@ -679,7 +734,10 @@
  */
 gboolean nm_system_should_modify_resolv_conf (void)
 {
-   return TRUE;
+   if (g_find_program_in_path(RESOLVCONF) != NULL)
+   return FALSE;
+ else
+   return TRUE;
 }

This means that if the resolvconf package is installed, then
network_manager does not do it's internal magic as it is expecting
resolvconf to look after the changes. However, if an openvpn connection
is being managed by network_manager, then the DNS settings being pushed
by the server are effectively ignored if resolvconf is installed as
there are not resolvconf specific hooks for the openvpn stuff.

I am not sure which package I should file this against. I chose
network_manager as it is the above patch that prevents network_manager
from "manually" modifying DNS entries. However, this could also be a
problem with network-manager-openvpn not correctly spawning resolvconf
if installed. It seems that network-manager is assuming resolvconf
looks after all DNS stuff while the network-manager-openvpn is not
leveraging resolvconf, so nothing gets done.

By the way, if resolvconf is not installed, then this all functions as
expected and the openvpn DNS settings are correctly pushed to the client
and /etc/resolv.conf is updated.

[Bug 88824] No module named _pysvn_2_5

2007-02-28 Thread Matthew Williams
Public bug reported:

Using the latest pysvn library (1.5.1-0ubuntu1) through svn-workbench, I
get the following error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/share/svn-workbench/wb_main.py", line 40, in

import pysvn
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/pysvn/__init__.py", line 104, in

import _pysvn_2_5
ImportError: No module named _pysvn_2_5

The contents of /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/pysvn are:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4180 2007-02-28 20:48 __init__.py
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6805 2007-02-28 20:36 __init__.pyc
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 959504 2007-02-28 10:42 _pysvn.so

As you can see, the only library there is _pysvn.so. If this is renamed
to _pysvn_2_5.so or a symlink is created from _pysvn.so to _pysvn_2_5.so
then the problem is resolved. I assume that the same problem exists
within the python2.4 portion of this package as well, but I don't use
python 2.4 so I can't be sure.
