[Bug 780551] Re: incorrect interface in avxintrin.h
Matthias, I'm sure your opinion is important here. But can we please argue this on technical merit? Currently the argument is a new macro will be used by developers to create more harm than good and feature tests are a better way to solve the problem the version macro should solve. I don't buy the first one (it's rather subjective at this point) and I already explained why the second one is not true for all software (library headers in this case). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780551 Title: incorrect interface in avxintrin.h To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gcc-linaro/+bug/780551/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 780551] Re: incorrect interface in avxintrin.h
Changing this to won't fix without even addressing my patch is quite frustrating. OTOH ignoring the patch is quite as bad... I'd really like to have a comment why my patch is not wanted / needed.
It's lots of text to go through so you probably missed it. My patch was specifically also meant for future packages of GCC so that a bug like this one is easier to handle. Short recap: - GCC x.y.z != Ubuntu GCC x.y.z because Ubuntu applies patches. - in most cases this is fine, but sometimes it makes the compiler behave differently - feature testing (config.h) for library headers is not possible, instead library headers define feature macros from the environment macros (__GCC_VERSION__, ...) - if there is no macro available to distinguish vanilla GCC from Ubuntu (or any other patched) GCC then there will be code that cannot ever compile portably on all systems -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780551 Title: incorrect interface in avxintrin.h To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gcc-linaro/+bug/780551/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 876146] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu is risky (unusable or unbootable PC). What can be done to safeguard data, revert failed upgrades and overall reduce the risks?
Hi, question: How does the upgrade QA work? Does it rely solely on users that do the upgrade at Alpha and Beta stages? Do you have a simple way to repeat upgrade processes to test the progress of stabilization? Actually I'd be happy to do upgrade tests (especially since my experience is that something always breaks). This scenario could work for me: * Alpha/Beta is announced * When I know I won't need my computer for the next few hours I will tell it to do a test upgrade * The upgrade process creates a bootable USB key or CD to restore the system later * First it tests whether this restore system boots, only if this works does the upgrade proceed * After the upgrade is done I can check for problems and report them (this must be automated as much as possible) * When done, I reboot into the restore CD/USB and get my old system back * If I get notified that some of my issues should be fixed I can repeat the process to verify Except for bootloader issues this should be easily possible given enough space on the harddrive... PS: I installed Ubuntu for a friend and when the popup appeared that a distribution upgrade is available, the first thing I did was call my friend and tell him to not click that button - I was just in time to stop him (and I'm happy I did - two out of two Oneiric upgrades broke for me. [Bug 780551] Re: incorrect interface in avxintrin.h
A distributer macro for GCC was discussed at http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2011-05/msg00275.html . Result of the discussion was, that Nathan Sidwell already created a very simple patch against 4.5 that enables this via the --with-specs configure switch. This is already available in the code-base of the Ubuntu package, so the only thing missing was proper use of the switch. I implemented a small change to the build rules, that determines the Ubuntu version and package patch-level and then defines the macro as suggested in my initial mail to the GCC list. I can understand your standpoint. But I'm sure you can understand that I find this highly unsatisfactory. But what I would really like to discuss is what measures you're taking that this is not going to happen again? Are you looking into a macro that can identify the distribution (I'd be happy to support you in getting such a feature integrated upstream)? What is required, from my view as library developer, is really a bug-by- bug compatibility between compilers with the same version. Everything else is a nightmare to support. And yes, other distris are also patching their GCCs. So I'd be happy to get this discussion going for all distributions... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780551 Title: incorrect interface in avxintrin.h -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 780551] Re: incorrect interface in avxintrin.h
I agree that it is much nicer to be able to use feature tests/macros instead of compiler-version ifdefs. But library headers really don't have any other way to work around compiler bugs or use new compiler features. One can not expect from library users that they will correctly define all required feature macros. Regarding the development of distri compiler specifc code: I don't believe the macro would get much use other than the __GNUC_PATCHLEVEL__ macro gets. Are you afraid of developers trying to cripple a distri they don't like? Can you come up with a scenario where a developer would make use of a distri specific define resulting in breakage on other distris? I find this very hard to imagine. (Yes, there are developers that do lots of stupid things, but the only thing to keep them from breaking stuff is to have them stop programming. ;-) ) I understood you don't want to change the gcc 4.5.2 package at all? I'd be happy for any, whatsoever small update to Natty gcc-4.5 that makes it possible to work around the bug. So if you were to add the _MM_MASKSTORE_PS_NEEDS_NATTY_WORKAROUND define that would be a welcome help. I don't care much for how bad the ifdefs become. I can put that logic in an extra code section which defines my feature macros... But I'd hate for these things to only be fixable after a lengthy discussion on a bugtracker, which is why I'd really like to have a macro do determine the differences from the vanilla GCC release. These kind of incompatibilities happened before and will happen again.
Re: [Bug 780551] Re: incorrect interface in avxintrin.h
On Wednesday 25 May 2011 15:18:57 Andrew Stubbs wrote: Never ascribe to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence! I forgot who said (something like) that, but it's certainly true in programming. :) sure. Just checking what you meant by your previous statement. I know I've done things the lazy way, or misunderstood how to use things enough times myself, so I'm not going to trust others to be perfect. Yeah, I agree with that. But with that argument you can basically shoot down any progress, because somebody might not be able to understand and apply it correctly. That's why I asked whether you can come up with an example of how the availability of a macro, which identifies the distribution, could lead to additional bugs. I just can't come up with anything. The code is frozen for anything but bug fixes, and even those have to be serious ones, I think. Adding a macro to a header is probably OK (Matthias?), but updating to 4.5.3 is out of the question. Yeah, well. It's something I have never really understood about distributions. Upstream can be as throrough as they want in doing only bug-fixes in their patchlevel releases. Still there's this rule that the version number in released distributions may not change, even if it's all bug-fixes. So distribution users have to wait for the next distribution version for a fix (and new bugs: because often the minor or major version changed in the meantime) or use unsupported packages/compile from sources. I could add some sort of identifier to Linaro GCC, and Ubuntu GCC would pick that up. But, so would half a dozen other distros (mostly embedded, I think). Each then add their own patches on top of that, potentially. These patches will fix bugs, add features, add bugs, and change random things to taste. Does the Linaro identifier now mean anything? No, no more so than the GNU macros are working for you now. Understood. But then I'd just call this badly implemented. Every release (i.e. an update of a package is a new release; a different architecture OTOH is not a different release, because it's a well-defined difference) needs to be able to identify itself in some way. Concrete ideas: __GNUC_DISTRIBUTOR__: Ubuntu __GNUC_DISTRIBUTOR_VERSION__: 1104 __GNUC_DISTRIBUTOR_PATCHLEVEL__: 8 Those macros ideally would become part of GCC proper and the values be settable via configure switches. I believe this scheme would solve all my problems and be understandable enough to both packagers and developers.

Vanilla GCC 4.5.3 also has this source incompatible interface change in avxintrin.h. But, and this is very important, it has a different __GNUC_PATCHLEVEL__. Thus, code can use the correct interface with a simple #ifdef. Therefore, I consider the change in GCC 4.5.3 bad, but ok. (IMHO a source incompatible change should not have happened in a patch release of GCC.) All I'm trying to do, is to revert this one source incompatible change to avxintrin.h in the Ubuntu GCC. I'm now trying a different approach. I want to keep the patches in debian/patches unchanged but add another patch that reverts the problematic part of gcc-linaro.diff. This should be the patch: svn diff -c -168900 svn://gcc.gnu.org/svn/gcc/branches/gcc-4_5-branch But it doesn't apply right away. [Bug 557635] Re: Intel GMA X4500HD - LCD Brightness Control no longer works
This seems to be the problem: %lshal -l -u /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_backlight udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_backlight' [..] laptop_panel.brightness_in_hardware = true (bool) Thus PowerDevil/Solid only register the brightness key presses but don't actually set the brightness as they expect the hardware to do this. [Bug 581829] [NEW] misconfiguration results in error message: Can't open and lock privilege tables: Table 'mysql.servers' doesn't exist
Public bug reported: After cleaning the akonadi configuration in ~/.local/share/akonadi and ~/.config/akonadi the resulting default configuration results in the following entries in the MySQL error log on Akonadi startup: 100517 14:45:14 [Warning] Can't open and lock time zone table: Table 'mysql.time_zone_leap_second' doesn't exist trying to live without them 100517 14:45:14 [ERROR] Can't open and lock privilege tables: Table 'mysql.servers' doesn't exist AFAIU this is not fatal for Akonadi itself but it considers this as problematic, thus refusing to work properly (graying out KAdressbook or telling me that I don't have any writable resources). Additionally I sometimes get a report that no resource agents were found. Next time it's good again... I don't know if this might be related or if it's a race condition in Akonadi itself - and thus an upstream issue. Following behavior for me: - Brightness keys show the OSD but don't change anything. - Adjusting the slider in KDE4's battery applet does change the brightness - changing the power profile in the battery applet also changes the brightness (as would be expected from the point above) - volume keys work regardless of the use of the brightness keys both keys do emit X11 keycodes, i.e. xev shows XF86MonBrightnessDown/-Up and XF86AudioLowerVolume/... [Bug 55804] Re: /proc/kcore not openable
That's what I wrote in the top post: only that I lost data which I could have recovered if only I could have read /proc/kcore. It's just like grepping /dev/hda? if you deleted a file in error: I wrote a text and I couldn't get back to it (it was in a web browser text field and the browser didn't go back to the page where the text was entered) but I was pretty sure the text was still in memory (in utf16, but grepping for utf16 text isn't that hard). So the 30+ minutes and creativity for writing the text were permanently lost instead of recovered in a few minutes through reading /proc/kcore. [Bug 55804] Re: /proc/kcore not openable
in general, this does not need to be available What defines the need? I had a need for /proc/kcore yesterday and I had the need before. exposes memory that could contain very sensitive data Yes it does. But it's only exposed to the root user. And the root user can do anything to the system. Where's the added security in crippling /proc/kcore (and /dev/mem)? I'm not convinced disabling /proc/kcore adds security. It might make it a little harder for an attacker that got root rights to get to sensitive information but it won't prevent it in any case. On the other hand it disallows legitimate use of it and therefore cripples the system in an unnecessary way. I guess from now on I have to patch and recompile the kernel everytime Ubuntu releases a new image ;-( -- /proc/kcore not openable https://launchpad.net/bugs/55804 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-26-686 /proc/kcore is available, but opening it as root always returns -EPERM. It really should be readable as root - and it is in vanilla kernels and also in the kernels on previous ubuntu releases. If you found a security reason to to allow reading of /proc/kcore as root you could just as well remove the (pseudo) file. I don't see the added security - only that I lost data which I could have recovered if only I could have read /proc/kcore. ** Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- /proc/kcore not openable https://launchpad.net/bugs/55804 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
