[Bug 2012388] Re: X11 window (usually AnyDesk) at top-right of the screen is invisible and steals mouse clicks

2024-07-10 Thread Mauro Gaspari
I also confirm I am unable to reproduce the issue with the latest
updates from proposed repository.

Release: Noble Numbat
Package version:
- gnome-shell_46.0-0ubuntu6~24.04.1_amd64.deb
- gnome-shell-common_46.0-0ubuntu6~24.04.1_all.deb

Steps to recreate:
On Noble Numbat, I re-enabled legacy tray icons and I was able to recreate the
issue.
I then enbled the proposed repository and installed gnome-shell from it.
Rebooted and after logging in I was unable to recreate the issue. I no longer
see black rectangles when switching virtual desktops, and nothing is stealing
mouse clicks any longer.

I would like to thank everyone involved troubleshooting, fixing, and
backporting patches to Noble Numbat.

[Bug 1906792] Re: Chromium tabs freeze with two windows on Wayland (Xwayland)

2024-02-28 Thread Mauro Gaspari
I have the exact same issue as described by original report. Two windows
of the browser on different workspaces, only happens when I use Wayland
session. I collected more data on this:

Release: Ubuntu Noble Numbat 24.04 and Ubuntu Mantic Minotaur 23.10
Hardware: Dell Inspiron-16-Plus-7620, i7-12700H, 32GB RAM.
Browsers tested: Vivaldi (deb), Brave (deb), Brave (snap), Chromium (snap)

As suggested by @vanvugt , I switched one browser setting, and it
immediately solved the issue for me on all browsers affected.

chrome://flags/#ozone-platform-hint
Changed from default (always use x11), to auto (try wayland first, fallback to
x11).

It is quite easy to check that the setting is applied, by running this on the
browser: chrome://gpu/
Searching the text for "ozone" I can see the following:

--ozone-platform-hint=auto
--ozone-platform=wayland

I hope this helps. Please let me know if further testing is required.

[Bug 1974471] Re: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled

2022-05-23 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Quick follow up.

I installed Ubuntu 22.04 on same RaspberryPI, and I noticed a huge performance
difference with fractional scaling on Wayland.
On Wayland I was unable to find any lag or delay or performance hit. On Xorg
though, even Ubuntu 22.04 had the same performance issues as Ubuntu Budgie
22.04.

Thanks a lot for your expertise, Daniel. Much appreciated. We will make
a note on our readme for Ubuntu Budgie ARM.

I hope this helps someone down the line.

[Bug 1974471] Re: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled

2022-05-23 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Daniel,

Thank you. This actually makes a lot of sense. Also, even if there is no fix,
at least we will know what to tell our users if and when issues like this are
reported.
I am still going to test on Ubuntu on both Gnome and Wayland, and report if
there is any difference, so we can keep it all for the record under same bug
report.

[Bug 1974471] Re: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled

2022-05-23 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Daniel,

This is with Xorg fractional scaling on Ubuntu Budgie ARM64. We don't
have Wayland on Budgie DE, but I can flash Ubuntu 22.04 ARM64 on a spare
microSD and test. Give me a few hours and I will follow up on that.

Regarding input, yes I believe same issue as described on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1902436 . Mouse movements feel slower
and also delayed around one second from the moment I move my hand to
when I see the cursor moving.

[Bug 1974471] [NEW] mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled

2022-05-20 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Public bug reported:

Distribution: Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS
Kernel: 5.15.0-1007-raspi
Package: libmutter-10-0
Architecture: arm64
Version: 42.0-3ubuntu2 5.15.0-1007-raspi

On Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS raspberry PI, turning on fractional scaling causes
an issue where mouse movement becomes laggy and hard to control. This persists
even if a reboot is performed after changing scaling settings.

This was tested on Raspberry PI 4 8GB with 3 different mice. 2 USB wired, and
one wireless with USB dongle. Same results with 3 mice.
Disabling fractional scaling immediately solved the problem.

Same tests were performed on Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 on amd64 laptop, with
Intel CPU and Nvidia+Intel GPU. There was no issue with mouse
performance on amd64 laptop.

[Bug 1972007] Re: budgie-desktop issues after changing fractional scaling on 4K monitors

2022-05-20 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Testing of this new package completed on both amd64 architecture, using a
laptop with intel+nvidia, and arm architecture using raspberry PI4. Both
updated with jammy-proposed updated to may 20 2022.
budgie-control-center version 1.0.1-2

Tests performed step by step per test plan in bug description. Both
computers worked well, test results were exactly as expected, and budgie
applets did not have any issue. No regressions to report.

I found a bug only on raspberry pi caused by fractional scaling, but
since it does not affect applets, I will file it as a separate bug.

[Bug 1972007] [NEW] budgie-desktop issues after changing fractional scaling on 4K monitors

2022-05-06 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Public bug reported:

Affected systems: Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS
budgie-desktop version: 10.6.1-1

Using 4K monitor, default scaling is set to 100%. This is too small for
comfortably using or installing system. After changing to 125% or 150%,
budgie-desktop starts having issues with AppMenu. Some other Applets also have
issues.

It was noted that logging off and logging in after the change, solves
all issues. However there is no prompt for user to re-log after changing
settings.

[Bug 1733301] Re: indicator-applet-complete 1.18.0 icon scaling

2021-12-01 Thread Mauro Gaspari
After installing Ubuntu MATE 21.10, fresh install on a virtual machine, I can
see that clementine, vlc, steam icons seem to behave correctly out of the box.
All icons seem to be properly scaled.
Version of indicator applet complete is 1.26.0

I installed per your request libayatana-indicator 0.8.4-1ubuntu1 and its
dependencies, and restarted the VM. Still everything looks scaled well
and without issues.

[Bug 1922489] [NEW] cockpit machines: no settings nor VMs displayed on ubuntu budgie 21.04

2021-04-04 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Public bug reported:

This looks like a regression, which affects me on Ubuntu Budgie 21.04.
Workaround described in the above launchpad bug report solves the

[Bug 1901242] Re: virt-manager local directory storage failing

2020-11-11 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Hello Lukasz,

Thank you for your great work. I already tested this, enabled groovy-
proposed, updated and restarted system. I saw libvirt updates and apt-
cache confirmed version 6.6.0-1ubuntu3.1

After reboot, I created a local storage repository with virt-manager and
it worked right away. No more error messages. Is there anything else I
can do to help?

[Bug 1901242] Re: virt-manager local directory storage failing

Interesting workaround found to keep using virt-manager:

1. Install cockpit-machines
2. Login to https://localhost:9090
3. Create the storage pool from cockpit, on same ext4 file system

The storage pool is added successfully, and immediately available on
virt-manager too.

[Bug 1893302] [NEW] SDDM freezes on system boot

2020-08-27 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Public bug reported:

System Info:
OS: Ubuntu Studio Groovy Gorilla
Description:Ubuntu Groovy Gorilla (development branch)
Release:20.10
Kernel: 5.8.0-16-lowlatency
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (16) @ 3.700GHz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon VII

Package Info:

  Version table:

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What I expect to happen:
After computer completes boot, I expect to be able to select my user, enter my
password and login successfully in Plasma Desktop.

What happened instead:
After computer completes boot, SDDM appears to be frozen. Cursor does not blink
in the password field, as it should. Mouse still moves but cannot click any
icon. System is not frozen, I can drop to another tty, login, check logs,
reboot.
This does not happen every time I boot, I have not yet found a way to reproduce
the issue reliably, but I would say it happens around 30%~50% of the times I
boot.

[Bug 1799580] Re: Settings made by qasmixer are lost on next reboot

2020-07-29 Thread Mauro Gaspari
I noticed the same bug affecting me on 3 installs:

1. Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 with Ubuntu Studio tools. Desktop, USB audio interface.
2. Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 with Ubuntu Studio tools. Laptop, Internal Audio card.
3. Ubuntu Studio 20.10 daily. Desktop, USB audio interface.

I do not think the issue is specifically of QASmixer. I tried to
manipulate ALSA volume settings using alsamixer and and alsactl store,
both with normal user and using sudo. Volume settings persist in the
session, if I close and reopen QASmixer or alsamixer, but all volume
settings are reset on reboot.

[Bug 1876480] [NEW] Ubuntu MATE 20.04 Display issues with AMDGPU

2020-05-02 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Public bug reported:

I found this report on Ubuntu MATE forums, It describes the issue very well:
https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/20-04-display-issues-with-amd-rx560/21648

Some additional feedback:
- Same issue affects Xubuntu 20.04 and Ubuntu Studio 20.04. Workaround for XFCE
is mentioned in the link above.
- Same issue affects my PC that has a different AMD GPU. Radeon VII in my case.
Tested with Ubuntu Mate 20.04 and Ubuntu Studio 20.04 (XFCE).
- Ubuntu MATE 20.04 marco works well on my Intel GPU and Intel+Nvidia Optimus
computers.

I have found a temporary workaround as mentioned in the linked forum
post:

1. Boot live ISO, select safe graphics. Complete installation and shut down.
2. On first boot, Hit "Esc" key to show GRUB menu, then "e" to edit, insert
nomodeset at the end of the line that starts with "linux /boot/vmlinuz...".
Press F10 to boot.
3. Login and open "MATE Tweak".
4. Select the third item from left panel: "Windows".
5. In the Window Manager , switch to "Marco (No compositor)".
6. Reboot (nomodeset will not be persistent so next boot is normal graphics
mode).
7. Enjoy.

I am available if further details or troubleshooting steps are needed.

[Bug 1825717] Re: hplip issue during hp-setup - stuck at plugin install

2019-05-07 Thread Mauro Gaspari
I re-created the same issue on another install, this time Ubuntu-Budgie 19.04.
Same issue happened, same solution fixed it.

Detailed steps I followed to fix the issue:

1. Go to https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/gethplip .
2. Download latest version for Ubuntu . At the time of writing latest version
is 3.19.3 .
3. Download hplip-3.19.3.run file, remember to change permissions to make it
executable.
4. Remove hplip installed by your distribution repositories.
5. Download hplip-3.19.3-plugin.run and hplip-3.19.3-plugin.run.asc from
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/plugins .
6. run hplip-3.19.3.run in a terminal, follow instructions on screen.
7. During printer setup process, when asked, always use interactive mode
instead of gui. When asked for plugin, select path instead of download from
server, provide path including full name of hplip-3.19.3-plugin.run .

[Bug 1825717] [NEW] hplip issue during hp-setup - stuck at plugin install

2019-04-21 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Kubuntu 19.04
Installed hplip from repositories, available version is 3.19.1+dfsg0-1

When I start setup with hp-setup, this happens:
1. I am asked connection type. I select network ethernet
2. My printer is detected. I select it and hit next
3. I am told about the proprietary plugin to download. I confirm, accept
download. I enter my user's password. I get a confirmation that the plugin is
correctly Installed.
4. On next screen, I get a warning and cannot continue installation. I am told
this printer needs a proprietary plugin to work correctly. After this I am
stuck in a loop between points 3 and 4. I also tried to start hp-setup from
super user on command line. but no way around this issue.

What I did next, I manually downloaded hplip-3.19.3.run from HP website.
Removed version of hplip installed from repositories. Installed from
manually downloaded package, followed the very same steps. Everything
worked fine and printer is installed successfully.

I hope this information is useful.

[Bug 1778011] Re: PRIME Power Saving mode draws too much power

2018-07-14 Thread Mauro Gaspari
This bug also affects me.
I am running Kubuntu 18.04 on Gigabyte AERO14, CPU:i7-7700HQ (45W TDP),
GPU:Nvidia 1050Ti

I took a full system image with clonezilla, and tested Alberto Milone's
PPA. System working fine after the upgrade. I tested switch+reboot
around 20 times.

Test results:
No issue rebooting with or without switching GPU.
GPU Switching: Switching GPU is now much faster. Even if i use it from nvidia
gui, I get the popup window asking to reboot right away.
system shutdown/reboot after I switch gpu is fast. Usual 5~10 seconds, same
time it takes when I am not switching gpu.
Power usage - Nvidia mode: powertop reports around 30w idle (cpu load:2~3%, gpu
ops/sec:0)
Power usage - Intel mode: powertop reports around 20w idle (cpu load:2~3%, gpu
ops/sec:0) - Device stats report usage of 100% of the Nvidia 1050 in powertop,
not sure if accurate.

I hope it helps.

Cheers,
Mauro

[Bug 1733301] Re: indicator-applet-complete 1.18.0 icon scaling

2017-12-20 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Thanks for your reply. I have been busy but I am willing to provide all
information needed. I took a couple of screenshots to show and explain
the issue I noticed.

1. On my primary machine, I run Ubuntu-Mate 16.04 LTS. I have no problem with
icon size. See attached screenshot, that shows Steam Icon being properly scaled.
When I click on the 3 dots as required, I see "Notification Area 1.12.2.
However if i remove it from my panel, Steam and CloudStation indicators are
still visible. The applet that brings indicators is "Indicator Applet Complete
1.12.1". I tried removing and re-adding it and I can confirm.

2. On a spare machine (also tested on VM with same result), I run
Ubuntu-Mate 17.10. Icon size seems too big here. When I click on the 3
dots as required, I see "Notification Area 1.18.4. However if i remove
it from my panel, Steam and CloudStation indicators are still visible.
The applet that brings indicators is "Indicator Applet Complete 1.18.0".
I tried removing and re-adding it and I can confirm.

Note: Both my installations use default theme and default icons. Also per my
previous message, cloudstation and steam icons are perfectly scaled on Ubuntu
17.10 and Kubuntu 17.10.
I hope this information is helpful, and I am available for more troubleshooting
or testing if required.

[Bug 1725315] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in g_hash_table_lookup_node()

2017-11-05 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Per comment #9, I confirm it only happens on gnome-shell on wayland mode.
I tested thoroughly over the last few days and I did not experience a single
crash on gnome-shell on Xorg.Once I switch back to gnome-shell on wayland, the
frequent crashes start happening again.

Per comment #10, I tested the workaround: uninstall evolution-indicator
package, and I confirm it works. No more evolution crashes on gnome-
shell on wayland.

PS
I ran the tests mentioned above on 2 machines: on Virtualbox VM, and on
Hardware. Same results on both.

[Bug 1713020] Re: Ubuntu Dock extension cannot be disabled in the Ubuntu session

2017-10-01 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Just to clarify my comment.
If you do not want to see the custom "Ubuntu" session with Gnome extensions
that cannot be disabled, you can do the following:

1. from terminal, install gnome session: sudo apt-get install gnome-session
gnome-session-wayland
2. logout.
3. on login, click the gear icon, select Gnome instead of Ubuntu.
4. Done, you can now enjoy Ubuntu with vanilla Gnome session.

Couple of notes:

- I agree with comments by Joseph Jasson. Having said that, I understand
how Canonical is trying to help its user base with a smooth transition,
and I appreciate the effort. If "Ubuntu" session's extensions cannot be
tweaked it would be great if those few extensions could have their
on/off button greyed out or removed, just for clarity.

- Ubuntu-Gnome is no more as far as I understand, so Ubuntu 17.10 will
have to serve both Unity and Gnome fans. With this in mind, I believe it
would be great if gnome-session gnome-session-wayland could be installed
by default. This could help users switch to the desktop environment they
prefer.

I hope this helps
Mauro

2017-08-29 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Thanks for the clarification and for the link. It is very informative.

Just a quick question to close this request. So, by default I only see Ubuntu
and Ubuntu on Xorg.
Will gnome session be available in ubuntu desktop later down the road, or do we
need to install it manually using: sudo apt-get install gnome-session?

Thanks

[Bug 1677198] Re: OpenVPN not Working in 17.04 via "Import a saved VPN configuration"

2017-08-28 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Hello,
I had my share of issues with network-manager-openvpn, especially with profiles
exported from pfsense appliances, as those tend to inline some configurations.
I remember I had issues with Ubuntu 17.04 and 16.04 but as I am testing now, it
seems all profiles I have can be imported and used.

If you can share your configuration I might be able to help and run some
tests. you can hide your certificate files and hostname.

Tested on Ubuntu 17.04 - no issue
network-manager-openvpn and network-manager-openvpn-gnome 1.2.6-2ubuntu1

Tested on Ubuntu 17.10 - no issue

[Bug 1639768] [NEW] ocserv fails when using radius authentication

2016-11-07 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu release:
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release:16.04

Package details:
ocserv:
  Installed: 0.10.11-1build1
  Candidate: 0.10.11-1build1
  Version table:
 *** 0.10.11-1build1 500
500 http://hk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Description:

I noticed that ubuntu 16.04 LTS now ships with both packages radcli and ocserv.
I have been testing those packages and it seems both can install with no issue.
Ocserv works well, but when I switch authentication to radius, service fails to
restart with the following error:

Nov 07 19:21:52 HKVM-OCSERV01 ocserv[1449]: Unknown or unsupported auth method:
radius[config=/etc/radcli/radiusclient.conf,groupconfig=true]
Nov 07 19:21:52 HKVM-OCSERV01 systemd[1]: ocserv.service: Main process exited,
code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Nov 07 19:21:52 HKVM-OCSERV01 systemd[1]: ocserv.service: Unit entered failed
state.
Nov 07 19:21:52 HKVM-OCSERV01 systemd[1]: ocserv.service: Failed with result
'exit-code'.

I tested this on both amd64 and armhf platforms. They have the same behavior.
The package ocserv in order to have radius support, needs to be compiled after
radius libraries are installed in the system.
You can refer to the documentation I wrote on openconnect webpage, under
"requirements" paragraph:
http://www.infradead.org/ocserv/recipes-ocserv-authentication-radius-radcli.html

I hope the package can be re-created with the much needed radius
support. I am available to test new version if and when needed.

[Bug 606365] Re: unable to import config with inlined ca, cert, key or tls-auth

2016-05-01 Thread Mauro Gaspari
I just want to confirm this issue, exactly the same 5a54a wrote. This is
confirmed on ubuntu-mate 16.04 64bit.
Interesting enough, Kubuntu 16.05 64bit does not have this issue. There is some
problem at times importing profiles in Kubuntu, but trying again a second time
works well.

I also noticed a few more issues, confirmed on multiple OpenVPN profiles:

TCP Ports
if the port in the profile is selected to be TCP, network-manager does not
recognize that, and it is needed to manually go in network manager and select
TCP port. However same profiles work fine on windows OpenVPN GUI, also starting
OpenVPN from command line on linux works fine.
remote tcp-client - This line in the configuration is relevant.
network-manager-openvpn cannot interpret that (but works fine on anything else
including cli). If I manually change the profile and split 2 lines, it works on
network-manger-openvpn. something like this:
remote
tcp-client

SPLIT TUNNEL
if the profile is a split-tunnel configuration, network manager setting "use
only for resources on this connection" in "ipv4 - routes" is not ticked. The
connection tries to go full tunnel, and internet stops working. Also confirmed
that on windows OpenVPN GUI this problem does not exist, and also starting
OpenVPN from command line on linux works fine.

If separate bugs are requested, please let me know and I will do that.

sample of an OpenVPN profile (exported by PFSense appliance):
dev tun
persist-tun
persist-key
cipher BF-CBC
auth SHA1
tls-client
client
resolv-retry infinite
remote tcp-client
lport 0
auth-user-pass
ca -ca.crt
tls-auth -tls.key 1
ns-cert-type server

[Bug 1174936] Re: online-accounts-preferences crashes immediately when opened

2013-05-04 Thread Mauro Gaspari
I also have this issue. Oleksandr's workaround also helps, but if I launch
online-accounts-preferences from terminal, the error is displayed even if panel
opens.
When this happens, I noticed that my icq plugin does not allow me to modify my
account, the whole page is greyed out and the only thing I can do is remove the
account. if I remove and re-add the account, I am still unable to enter account
information. Not sure if it is related or a completely separate bug.

** Attachment added: icq fails to display account info
