[Bug 934291] Re: Deleting or stopping print jobs does not work

2013-03-19 Thread Michael Pacey
This is insane! The only way to cancel a print job in Ubuntu is to open
a terminal and use the cancel command!

I applied for a job at Canonical and was unsuccessful. I promise if
you'd employed me I would NOT have allowed this to happen!

Also, I'm going to have to use mpage to do two pages per side because of
the crazy way gnome printing works. What's going on? Mark Shuttleworth,
you went into space, did you come back?

[Bug 567585] [NEW] serverguide virtualization chapter has incorrect networking instructions

2010-04-20 Thread Michael Pacey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The ubuntu-serverguide (10.04.02) virtualization chapter says:

19.2.3.2.1.2. Modifying the libvirt Template to use Bridging
Because our appliance will be likely to need to be accessed by remote hosts, we
need to configure libvirt so that the appliance uses bridge networking. To do
this we use vmbuilder template mechanism to modify the default one.

In our working directory we create the template hierarchy and copy the
default template:

mkdir -p VMBuilder/plugins/libvirt/templates
cp /etc/vmbuilder/libvirt/* VMBuilder/plugins/libvirt/templates/

We can then edit VMBuilder/plugins/libvirt/templates/libvirtxml.tmpl to
change:

  interface type='network'
source network='default'/
  /interface

To:

  interface type='bridge'
source bridge='br0'/
  /interface

This is incorrect as the first stanza does not exist and is in fact
parameterized like this:

#if $bridge
interface type='bridge'
  source bridge='$bridge'/
#else
interface type='network'
#if $mac
  mac address='$mac'/
#end if
#if $network
  source network='$network'/
#end if
#end if
#if $virtio_net
  model type='virtio'/
#end if
/interface

so rather than making this copy and edit of the template, a flag needs to be
passed to vmbuilder. From vmbuilder --help:

  libvirt integration:
--libvirt=URI Add VM to given URI
--bridge=BRIDGE Set up bridged network connected to BRIDGE.
--network=NETWORK Set up a network connection to virtual network
NETWORK.

So it looks like this section needs to be removed and the remaining
instructions need to be modified to stipulate use of --bridge=BRIDGE.

Cheers

Michael

[Bug 485448] Re: I cannot open .docx files after updating to OpenOffice 3.1.1 with Karmic Koala

2010-01-24 Thread Michael Pacey
My father's computer is also affected by this. However none of mine are!
His is a 32-bit machine running karmic, I tested on my 64-bit machine
running karmic (Ubuntu Studio) and I could open the file he has a
problem with. So I thought maybe it was a problem with 32-bit but I can
also open it on my 32-bit netbook-remix eeePC, also karmic.

Tried reinstalling OpenOffice, did not help.

Tried creating a new user account on my dad's computer, in case it was
an issue with dotfiles, but this did not help either.

Next I'll look at installed fonts, I think.

[Bug 485448] Re: I cannot open .docx files after updating to OpenOffice 3.1.1 with Karmic Koala

2010-01-24 Thread Michael Pacey
Fixed! My dad's computer had an old version of odf-converter installed.
Obviously this is no longer needed as OpenOffice 3.1 can read docx
natively. And obviously it conflicts in some way with the built in
import filter. So I removed it and bingo, he can now open docx.

[Bug 475131] Re: Graphics display shuts off intermitantly

2010-01-19 Thread Michael Pacey
This (the original reported problem, not complete loss of video) affects
me too on an i686 machine.

02:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
(Secondary) (rev 01)

Linux carlos 2.6.31-9-rt #152-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT RT Thu Oct 15 05:01:14
UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

(I'm running Ubuntu Studio)

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=9.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=karmic
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 9.10

Only a problem in 1600x1200, which is my monitor's native resolution. So
I run it at a reduced resolution, but I'd prefer the native.

Nothing of note in any logs! It's as almost like the monitor cable gets
pulled for a few seconds and plugged back in.

[Bug 475131] Re: Graphics display shuts off intermitantly

2010-01-19 Thread Michael Pacey
Interestingly, this is not an issue if I use my card's VGA output rather
than the DVI-D port - but my monitor initially complained about
frequencies being out of range and I had to generate an xorg.conf and
edit the HorizSync and VertRefresh with lower maximum values. Changing
these figures has not fixed DVI-D though.

[Bug 403303] Re: power manager reports 1% battery even though it is full

Why is this bug low priority when 392467 got to be medium?

I just put Karmic UNR on an Asus Eee PC for a friend who is giving it to
his daughter as a Christmas present. Bit embarrassing that the otherwise
deeply inferior distro didn't have a problem with this.

[Bug 388963] Re: Wishlist: Ability to open same file in multiple evince windows

Hi Pedro,

Thanks for pointing me to the bugzilla.gnome.org page. One of the
comments there says that there is an option to Open a Copy within
Evince. And yes, there is! I don't know how I missed it, but this
resolves my issue. Cancel the wishlist, there is no problem here except
with me!

[Bug 388963] [NEW] Wishlist: Ability to open same file in multiple evince windows

2009-06-18 Thread Michael Pacey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I have a large PDF text with appendices. I need to switch back and forth
between the main text and the appendices, which is time consuming and
annoying. The natural solution would be to open another Evince window
with a view onto the appendices so I can switch between the windows
quickly, but this is not possible. I am aware of workarounds - make a
second copy of the file, or install a second PDF reader - but these
should not be necessary.

So, my wish is to be able to open a file in two separate Evince windows.
