[Bug 2081713] [NEW] passwd fails for local account if using systemd-homed and configuring pam with pam-auth-update

2024-09-23 Thread Mike Burgener
Public bug reported:

Dear All

Problem:

The passwd command fails for a local account added by adduser if using
systemd-homed and local accounts together when using pam-auth-update to
configure pam and selecting systemd-homed support in pam-auth-update.

Workaround:

It seems removing use_authtok from /etc/pam.d/common-password fixes the
issue. removing that line seems not to be the best Idea in my
understanding but works for the Moment.

Kind regards

Mike

[Bug 2055012] Re: When I upgraded from 22.04 to 24.04, DNS resolution went wrong.

2024-09-20 Thread Mike Chelen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 2054761 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2054761

Same issue occurred for me today on upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04. There
was some error during the initial upgrade, causing it to exit and it had
to be resumed. After the upgrade completed, `/etc/resolv.conf/` was
linked to `/run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf` however this file did
not exist. The package `systemd-resolved` was not installed or marked
for installation. To fix this, I installed the package resulting in
`/run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf` being generated, and after a
`sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager.service` DNS resolution worked
again.

Here is what I see in the relevant `main.log`:
```
So it seems like there was an unrelated error with the Firefox snap
installer. Perhaps the underlying problem is that `systemd-resolved` is
not properly reconfigured after upgrade errors?
[Bug 1987679] Re: os-prober leaves filesystems (lvm-thin, lvm snap) mounted
2024-09-20 Thread mike afheldt
Please, I am sure you are busy, but it is such a simple (and safe fix)
and has such strange and undecipherable consequences.
There are a couple of other bugs that I submitted around the same time, equally
trivial fixes that would also be nice.
I believe that I provide the (a) simple and safe solution for each one. I am,
and have been sick for the last 4+ years, but am in a bit of remission right
now and would be happy to be of assistance.
I use (depend upon) thin snapshots to protect myself against failed unattended
upgrades of which I have had a few in the last couple of years.
thanks
[Bug 2080763] [NEW] Super+Shift+3 keyboard shortcut on UK keyboard doesn't work when text input is expected in GTK applications
2024-09-15 Thread Mike Crowe
Public bug reported:
I run a Wayland Ubuntu desktop.
I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04 and noticed that my
Windows+Shift+3 keyboard shortcut to move a window to workspace 3 has
stopped working for gnome-terminal when the main terminal window has the
focus. Instead it just causes the a £ sign to be sent to the terminal.
The behaviour of the shortcut is similar in text-entry boxes of GTK-
using applications such as Firefox and gedit: a £ sign is inserted.
When a text-entry box does not have the focus in all these applications
the shortcut works correctly.
Other Windows+Shift+number shortcuts work correctly in all these
applications whether a text entry box has the focus or not.
The shortcut works correctly in KeepassXC (a QT application), Emacs (an
X11 GTK application that has its own input handling) and xterm (an X11
non-GTK application) even when text input is expected.
If I run:
 WAYLAND_DISPLAY= gedit
to force gedit to use X11 then the keyboard shortcut works as expected.
My only input source is set to "English (UK)" which implies that this
problem relates to the Shift+3 keystroke generating a different keypress
to other keyboard layouts.
If I configure an alternative input source of "English (US)" and use
that the the Windows+Shift+3 keyboard shortcut works correctly in all
applications whether a text input box is focussed or not.
This all implies to me that this problem as reported is specific to UK
keyboard layouts and applications using GTK (or some other Gnome library
on top of GTK) with Wayland.
For the avoidance of doubt, the keyboard shortcut I have configured is:
 $ dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/wm/keybindings/move-to-workspace-3
 ['3']
[Bug 2080740] [NEW] There is no way to add a UEFI boot partition on the Manually-Partition page of the installer
2024-09-14 Thread Mike Fairbank
Public bug reported:
On the Ubuntu 24.04.1LTS installer, on the Manually-Partition page,
there is no way to set up a partition to host the UEFI boot loader, if
it doesn't already exist.
When you add a new partition, the only formats available are EXT4, etc.
But what format should we choose for the UEFI boot partition?  There
doesn't seem to be one (or if there is, it's certainly not at all
clear).  This should be fixed.  It's a show-stopper.  It prevents you
getting past the manual-partition page, unless you are lucky enough to
already have such a UEFI partition on your HDD.
(I've also raised a related bug 2080739 about when this UEFI partition
is missing, the NEXT button on the manual-partition page is permanently
disabled.)
[Bug 2080739] [NEW] installer manually partition, next button is grayed out
2024-09-14 Thread Mike Fairbank
Public bug reported:
During the 24.04.1LTS installer, on the manually partition page, the
next button is greyed out if your hard-drive already had a legacy-boot
version of Ubuntu on it.  If there is not already a uefi partition on
your hard-drive, then the Next button is never enabled, and all the
options of choosing a drive on which to install the boot sector are also
greyed out.  Hence the only way to get past this page is to go back, and
choose "standard install" instead of "manual partition".  That
workaround works (but then it formats your whole hard drive, which is
not ideal!)
Also, there should be a way to create a UEFI partition from this screen,
but there isn't.
These are both showstoppers for encouraging new users onto Ubuntu.
[Bug 2078527] Re: sys.version from mod_python cannot be parsed by the python platform module
2024-09-03 Thread Mike Squire
Hello Lena,
Thank you for looking into this bug. I have created a minimal test case
that illustrates the problem and is completely independent of trac -
though it exposes the issue that causes trac to fail.
To install the test case:
1. Extract the attached archive python_bug_2078527.tar.gz into /opt/local/tmp
(you can put it somewhere else, but you'll need to edit the PythonPath
directive in the supplied apache2.conf file if you do).
2. Add "Include /opt/local/tmp/python_bug_2078527/apache2.conf" to the bottom
of the VirtualHost definition in /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf
(assuming the default location of this configuration file).
3. Run systemctl restart apache2
Now go to http://localhost/mod-python-bug-2078527 in a browser. You
should see this:
Python sys.version   3.12.3
platform.python_version()ValueError: failed to parse CPython sys.version:
'3.12.3'
If you go to http://localhost/mod-python-bug-2078527?hack_fix=1 you
should see this:
Python sys.version   3.12.3 (dummy, dummy, dummy) [dummy]
platform.python_version()3.12.3
I hope this helps!
Thanks again,
Mike.
[Bug 2078761] [NEW] Update Raspberry Pi Firmware
2024-09-02 Thread Mike Silva
Public bug reported:
Before release of 24.10, please pull the current stable firmware for the
Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 from the Pi Foundation.
The foundation is still making frequent security and stability
improvements in firmware, but Ubuntu falls woefully behind top of tree
for stable. I get that Ubuntu is not a rolling release, but then
seemingly no one remembers to pull latest before Ubuntu releases, as
upstream is separate from normal linux-firmware.
[Bug 2078527] [NEW] sys.version from mod_python cannot be parsed by the python platform module
2024-08-30 Thread Mike Squire
Public bug reported:
Ubuntu version: 24.04.1
Package version: 3.5.0.1-3build1
Python version: 3.12.3
I encountered this problem after upgrading from jammy -> nobel and
installing Trac 1.6. I do not believe this is a problem with Trac
however.
The trac.web.modpython_frontend handler supplied by Trac indirectly ends
up in platform._sys_version which requires sys.version to be of a
specific format: "X.Y.Z (buildno, builddate, buildtime) [compiler]", and
raises ValueError if it cannot be parsed.
However, setting the handler to mod_python.testhandler reveals that
sys.version is just "X.Y.X".
So the sys.version that is being set by mod_python is not compatible
with the standard python platform module.
The error that appears in the Apache log is:
...
File "/usr/lib/python3.12/platform.py", line 1108, in _sys_version ...
ValueError: failed to parse CPython sys.version: '3.12.3'
Adding this hack to the trac.web.modpython_frontend module resolves the
problem:
try:
sys.version.index(" ")
except ValueError:
sys.version += ' (dummy, dummy, dummy) [dummy]'
[Bug 2078514] [NEW] Unable to upgrade 22.04 to 24.04
2024-08-30 Thread Mike Robinson
Public bug reported:
The following message was received during distribution upgrade:
Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.
This was likely caused by:
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
try the upgrade again.
If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If
you want to investigate this yourself the log files in
'/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade.
Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'.
That is a rather vague message. No instructions are given on which
unofficial software or which PPA is causing the error. Telling end users
to sort through log files and expecting them to correctly diagnose the
problem is wishful thinking. Surely this should be done automatically or
more details given.
[Bug 2076570] [NEW] woke up disk full says syslog.1 full over 300gb 0 items.. trying to figure out why..
2024-08-11 Thread mike
Public bug reported:
full Attempting to call back into JSAPI during the sweeping phase of GC.
This is most likely caused by not destroying a Clutter actor or Gtk+
widget with ::destroy signals connected, but can also be caused by using
the destroy(), dispose(), or remove() vfuncs. Because it would crash the
application, it has been blocked and the JS callback not invoked.
[Bug 2067317] Re: fatal: cannot exec git-cola-sequence-editor' on git rebase
2024-07-31 Thread Mike Ludwig
Fyi, I am see same issue.  I am using Ubuntu 24.04
I lauched Git-Dag from Git-Cola and then selected 'rebase'.  I then
select a change to rebase to and get the following error:
fatal: cannot exec
'/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/bin/git-cola-sequence-editor': No such file or
directory
error: unable to start editor
'/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/bin/git-cola-sequence-editor'
Would be nice to see fixed so can rebase.
[Bug 2074089] [NEW] High CPU from gnome-shell when moving mouse
2024-07-25 Thread Mike B
Public bug reported:
Mouse starts stuttering/lagging. If I run `top` in the terminal, I can
see gnome-shell spike to 90%+ CPU usage when I move my mouse. If I stop
moving mouse, it will settle back down. Only 1 gnome-shell extension
installed (Unite), which I tried disabling, but stuttering didn't
change.
Rebooting seems to resolve the mouse stuttering for a while. Problems
seems to arise when uptime is around 7-10 days.
[Bug 2049562] Re: UBSAN: array-index-out-of-bounds vboxdrv
2024-07-14 Thread Mike
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 2037082 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2037082
Note- this is marked as "duplicate" but the original bug report is
marked as "fixed". As w-sky mentions, it's not actually fixed in the
current version. Some housekeeping needs to happen here to either open
the previous ticket back up or i suppose remove this as a duplicate and
open this up as an original ticket instead.
[Bug 2037082] Re: UBSAN: array-index-out-of-bounds with kernel 6.5 on Mantic
2024-07-14 Thread Mike
This is also still an issue for me. I'm just going to remove virtualbox
but others might not be able to do this.
Also why on earth are the sanitizers baked into release builds? Like,
cool that it catches stuff (i guess), but they absolutely reduce
performance and can trigger crashes on things that otherwise would not
have actually crashed. You generally only compile those in for testing,
yet here we are on release with the sans compiled in...
[Bug 2066938] Re: Applying a package profile leaves unnecessary file in sources.list.d
2024-05-29 Thread Mike Fry
Hi Mitch.
Yes, to produce the bug several time, all I did was apply a package profile to
several computers.
I have a profile that consists of several packages to be installed.  The
contraint is any version since I want the latest version.
The behavior consists in the landscape-client/jammy,now 19.12-0ubuntu13 amd64.
I don't see the version you referenced.  Here is my source.list for jammy
updates.
deb http://ubunturepo.epg.nam.gm.com/ubuntu jammy-updates main universe
multiverse restricted
Here is the unnecessary files.
:/etc/apt/sources.list.d# cat _landscape-internal-facade.list
[Bug 2051999] Re: Grub2 2.06 has upstream bug that results in Non-booting with ZFS after snapshot of bpool.
2024-05-18 Thread Mike Ferreira
@mate ---
I checked the changelogs of the current Grub2 packages for Jammy.
I don't see patches for this issue yet. The last updates for Grub2
packages for Jammy were in April, and were for ARM, and a CVE security
update by you. Because that was "Security", I understand that those took
precedence.
But is now 2 months since then, with no updates/patches.
You said 2.12 was patched, but current Grub2 in Jammy is still
2.06-2ubuntu7.2 amd64...
Any expected timeline for Jammy?
[Bug 2051999] Re: Grub2 2.06 has upstream bug that results in Non-booting with ZFS after snapshot of bpool.
2024-05-18 Thread Mike Ferreira
Those compatibility flags, mirror the pool create options I noted
above... With doing a snapshot of bpool, and Send'ing it 'somewhere',
even if that was to a flash-drive... Destroying the original bpool,
recreate the new bpool, then Receive, the snapshot back to restore it,
does fix that with less than 2GB of storage.
That is just one work-around. I've started (manually) making bpool's 3GB
on ZFS-On-Root installs, to allow more room for my snapshots...
Upgrading Grub2 to 2.12, from 2.12rc and previous, fixes the problem
also. There is 3-4 work-around listed in this report that works.
this. Your email address is gets a server error where the DNS record is missing
[Bug 2063962] Re: 24.04 UEFI install fails, BIOS install succeeds
2024-04-28 Thread Mike Perrin
This seems to be unique to the Q1900M board. I cobbled together another
system with an ASRock 970 Extreme 3 motherboard, Athlon II CPU and 8GB
RAM and the MATE UEFI install succeeded. Conversely a UEFI install of
Lubuntu, which uses the Calamares installer also failed on the Q1900M
system. So I don't know what the problem is but I know some things it is
not. It is not the hard disk because the install failed with a different
one. It is not memory size because it failed when I borrowed a memory
stick from another machine to get 8GB on the Q1900M.
After making two backups of my home directory and the disk image of my
target machine (An ASRock J5040-ITX board) I worked up the courage to
try 24.04 MATE there and it succeeded. It appears this is a peculiar
problem with my Q1900M test box (which had no problems with previous
Ubuntu releases). If no one else is experiencing a similar problem I
suggest we chalk this one up to no-see-ums and forget it.
[Bug 2023630] Re: cups-browsed - AppArmor profile missing rights for "/run/systemd/resolve/io.systemd.Resolve"
2024-04-28 Thread Mike Vastola
I was able to get around this by running the following
$ sudo mkdir /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/nss-systemd.d
$ echo -e '# vim:syntax=apparmor\n\n  abi ,\n
@{run}/systemd/resolve/io.systemd.Resolve rw,' | sudo tee
/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/nss-systemd.d/resolver
$ sudo systemctl reload apparmor
There may very well be better ways to do this, but this seems to work.
NB: FWIW, I believe this gives many applications the ability to use
systemd-resolved to resolve hostnames, but I can't imagine that being a
security issue.
[Bug 2063962] [NEW] 24.04 UEFI install fails, BIOS install succeeds
2024-04-27 Thread Mike Perrin
Public bug reported:
Ubuntu, Ubuntu-Cinnamon and Ubuntu-MATE all fail to install when using
UEFI but MATE succeeded when I tried a BIOS install. In all cases the
install selections were to take over the disk, minimal desktop and no
proprietary drivers or codecs. Hardware is an ASRock Q1900M Pro 3 quad
core Celeron board with 4GB RAM. Attached is a screenshot of the MATE
install log window when the failure occurred.
[Bug 1977491] [NEW] Update Samba in 22.04LTS to 4.15.7
2022-06-03 Thread Mike Silva
Public bug reported:
In Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, there is currently a regression in Samba 4.15.5 and
a new issue, both of which cause connection issues with macOS clients.
The regression causes segfaults with macOS client connections. The new
issue, breaks durable handles, which are crucial to Samba's support of
Time Machine over SMB (using vfs_fruit).
For the regression:
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14900
For the new issue:
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15022
This regression was fixed in Samba 4.15.6, see:
https://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-4.15.6.html
The new issue in 4.15.7, see:
https://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-4.15.7.html
** Affects: samba (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
Re: [Bug 1964652] Re: Settings program crashes intermittently. Will not shut down. Always happens when I am trying to set Wifi. Wifi does not start automatically
2022-05-15 Thread Mike Rehner
Unfortunately I wiped Ubuntu 20.04 and did a fresh install of Ubuntu 22.04.
Ubuntu 22.04 did not have any problems setting wifi and the wifi connects
automatically to the hidden network.
Thank you for your response
Mike
[Bug 1970025] [NEW] Tried to update Snapd from the GUI, it logged me out
2022-04-23 Thread Mike Eichler
Public bug reported:
This is a fresh install of 22.04 on X86_64, with Nvidia drivers, running
X11 (can't get Wayland, but there already seems to be a bug report about
that)
Steps to reproduce
1. launched Software Updater from the dashboard
2. it asked to update snapd, I confirmed by click
After a second the screen turned all black and after another second I
was presented with the login screen
I logged back in, ran Software Updater, the system was up to date
[Bug 1969421] Re: 21.10 to 22.04 upgrade- package dpkg 1.21.1ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade
2022-04-18 Thread Mike
Ok I figured it out. You can close this ticket unless you think others
might encounter the same issue.
I must have followed instructions like at
https://wiki.aleen42.com/qa/dpkg.html to rename  /var/lib/dpkg/info to
/var/lib/dpkg/info.bak, and it was choking on the directory because head
can't operate on a directory. I moved /var/lib/dpkg/info.bak somewhere
else and it fixed the problem.
The post install script /var/lib/dpkg/info/dpkg.postinst contains the following
code that will choke if there is a directory in /var/lib/dpkg/info/:
fixup_misplaced_alternatives()
(
  admindir=${DPKG_ADMINDIR:-/var/lib/dpkg}
  cd "$admindir"
  for file in *; do
# Check whether this is a known file we do not want to act on.
case "$file" in
alternatives|\
arch|\
available|available-old|\
cmethopt|methlock|methods|\
diversions|diversions-old|\
info|parts|triggers|updates|\
lock|lock-frontend|\
statoverride|statoverride-old|\
status|status-old)
  # Ignore known files just to make sure.
  continue
  ;;
*)
esac
# Check whether the file looks like an alternative state file.
mode="$(head -1 "$file")"
case "$mode" in
auto|manual)
  # Looks like a state file, we will handle this one.
  echo "Moving misplaced alternative state file $admindir/$file..."
  mv "$file" "alternatives/$file"
  ;;
*)
  echo "warning: unknown dpkg database file $admindir/$file is not a
misplaced alternative state... leaving as is" 1>&2
  continue
  ;;
esac
  done
)
[Bug 1969421] [NEW] 21.10 to 22.04 upgrade- package dpkg 1.21.1ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade
Public bug reported:
Decided to start my upgrade to 22.04 two days early (2022-04-19) from a
I am still seeing this issue in 4/2022 (as stated; when not using smb
bug #1725476 generates "bug 1725476 cannot be found".It appears the
duplicate bug is #1724609.
[Bug 1964037] Re: gnome-shell crashes (fatal error logged in create_fallback_offscreen) when attempting to enable second monitor on second GPU (Nvidia >= 495) in a Wayland session
2022-03-25 Thread Mike Pontillo
Thanks for your attention to this bug, Daniel.
For the record, I don't think a set up like this is particularly weird;
I'm seeing this issue on a laptop with embedded NVIDIA graphics. The
"second video card", in my case, is the integrated Intel graphics card.
Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but yesterday I saw a regression
that caused my second monitor to fail; the only workaround I found was
to downgrade to nvidia-driver-470 from nvidia-driver-510. (That is,
nvidia-driver-510 wasn't causing me too much trouble when I first
installed Jammy from the March 21st image; it took a day or two of
[Bug 1966318] [NEW] courier-mta rejects Yahoo mail with null MX dns records
2022-03-24 Thread Mike Wright
Public bug reported:
Builds from courier-mta sources prior to 2021 have two bugs:
1) parsing bug in the bofh badfrom check
2) rejects null MX records when validing the sending IP address against
the sender's HELO/EHLO identifier
#2 is causing Yahoo mail with null MX dns records to be rejected. Yahoo
is a major player in the email world and this should be considered a
priority
Recommend that new .deb binary be generated using courier-mta 2021
or later.
1) Bionic Beaver
2) courier-mta-0.78.0-2ubuntu2
3) expect all mail from Yahoo to be delivered
4) mail with null MX dns records are being rejected
** Affects: courier (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
[Bug 1965805] Re: Ubiquity failure - Error while installing packages Ubuntu Jammy
2022-03-22 Thread Mike Pontillo
Thanks for your attention.
For the record, I saw the same errors mentioned in this bug after the
Firefox install timed out, which is why I posted the screenshot. (I
thought it might provide additional detail about the root cause.)
After the snap install timed out, the entire install process aborted and
I had to manually revert the changes to the partition table.
(Also, I would personally consider it a bug if the installer cannot
gracefully handle the case where "the network is connected but the snap
store cannot be contacted".)
FYI: I was able to work around this by asking Ubiquity to do a minimal
install, not to download packages during install, and turning off WiFi
(just to be sure).
[Bug 1965805] Re: Ubiquity failure - Error while installing packages Ubuntu Jammy
2022-03-22 Thread Mike Pontillo
I'm seeing what might be the same issue with the Jammy live image.
Before I got the error, I saw that it was trying to install the Firefox
snap and was not able to reach the snap store. (For the record, the
machine _did_ have a network connection.)
[Bug 1959465] [NEW] Mudlet not respecting user-selected server data encoding setting
2022-01-28 Thread Mike VanCleave
Public bug reported:
When connecting to MUME with Force CHARSET negotiation enabled (box NOT
checked under Special settings), and UTF-8 selected for Server data
encoding in general settings, encoding is changed to ISO 8859-1 during
negotiation with the server. It appears that, during this negotiation,
the server offers several options, and Mudlet is choosing the first
compatible option in the list (ISO 8859-1) rather than the user selected
preference (UTF-8), which is also available.
I was able to use UTF-8 by turning Force CHARSET negotiation off and
manually setting UTF-8 in the MUD using the command line.
I think the expected behavior (at least the behavior I expected) is
that, if I have Force CHARSET negotiation on, and have chosen a
particular encoding, Mudlet would enforce that encoding with the server,
if it is available.
Here are the packets that are exchanged during the negotiation:
[Bug 1951733] Re: My screen freezes during a USB live session and I can't install Ubuntu
2021-11-21 Thread Mike Ferreira
I believe it to be a firmware issue... It should be move to another area
and filed against "something". This is not a question, nor a bug against
Launchpad...
This is a BUG.
But it "is" unknown just which piece, module, system, etc, "is" causing
his problem, to file it as a BUG against something specific. Please move
this to an appropriate place so that it does get attention, in some kind
of timely manner.
[Bug 1951733] Re: My screen freezes during a USB live session and I can't install Ubuntu
2021-11-21 Thread Mike Ferreira
This User needs to submit his logs and errors, and do any back-traces
you all think necessary. He has worked with us at UbuntuForums, it seems
to be a case were it occasionally gets an error where "it cannot claim a
resource." The specific errors that it is getting, on the hardware,
seems to affect. Some thoughts on this error vary from maybe being a
video issue, firmware, BIOS, the USB controller, etc.
This person's computer is "New and still under warranty." The Vendors
say that there is not a BIOS upgrade for it. The Vendor had him ship
back the computer to them, where they supposedly tested it extensively
"with Windows", but found no problem.
He can run 18.04 LTS... But has problems with anything newer.
I see this problem on the same or similar hardware, not just in Ubuntu,
but also in other Linux Distributions.
"I" asked this User to escalate his problem to Launchpad. Yes, he could
take this computer back and try to get his money back on it before the
warranty expires, but something it wrong that needs to be investigated
and resolved with this.
[Bug 1950492] Re: wifi stops working on Dell XPS 9310
2021-11-17 Thread Mike Lewis
This appears to be triggered by commit
4f73581836f031611b281c8c6017202f36afbf6b, the change is reported as a
bug in the 5.13 kernel as well and appears to have been brought into the
5.11 HWE kernel.
[Bug 1950492] Re: wifi stops working on Dell XPS 9310
2021-11-17 Thread Mike Lewis
Same problem here with Ubuntu 20.04 on a Dell XPS 15 9500, but in my
case it was triggered by update from kernel 5.11.0-38-generic to
5.11.0-40-generic.
Apt history shows the update as occurring last Friday morning, and the
next time I rebooted (the day after) the WiFi module stopped working,
message in dmesg as above. After the error, the WiFi module is not even
visible to the BIOS.
The only way to get the WiFi module to appear again is to remove the
back of the laptop and disconnect the battery, but if I boot Linux it
immediately is knocked out again.
[Bug 1574582] Re: HP lt4120 Snapdragon X5 LTE USB modem not recognized by network-manager
2021-11-15 Thread Mike
This is not a NetworkManager problem. It is also reported by me in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1950385
and it is probably kernel bug.
The problem is described by ModemManager's developer in our discussion:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mobile-broadband/ModemManager/-/issues/463#note_1157289
 as a broken USB communication.
According to diagnosis from kernel 5.1x the qmi_wwan module resets modem
firmware in endless loop:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mobile-broadband/ModemManager/-/issues/463#note_1157919
although it was worked flawlessly earlier in kernel 5.8.x
The workaround is to use udev script for a modem to switch it to the MBIM mode
which works ok under ModemManager & NetworkManager. Reboot. Recreate connection
profile for modem in Network Manager Mobile Broadband Settings for your GSM
Network Provider to make it binded with new MBiM devid config.
Tested on kernels 5.8, 5,11, 5.13.
Place the attached udev script file in: /etc/udev/rules.d instead of any
old one. It uses usb_modeswitch to do the "magic" correctly.
