[Bug 297289] Re: [needs-packaging] wxBanker

2008-11-17 Thread Mike Rooney
A setup.py is implemented in 0.4 which allows for easy
installing/upgrading, so I will up the milestone to 0.5. Hopefully going
from a decent setup.py to a package is easy with something like cdbs.

Re: [Bug 244838] Re: remove laptop-mode settings from /etc/default/acpi-support

2008-11-16 Thread Mike Rooney
Last time I tried this with Hardy, the disks would turn off, but if I tried
to use the computer after not having done so in awhile, such as after being
on overnight, any activity would cause the disk I/O to thrash seemingly
indefinitely and the machine was unusable until a hard restart.

Frantique, I can't confirm this with a clean Firefox profile. I can open

print again successfully.

Are you using any extensions besides ubufox? If so please disable them,
restart, and try again as it may not be a problem with an Ubuntu package
but instead a third-party extension.

There is no need to compile anything, just go to eclipse.org and
follow the appropriate download links (selecting Linux, naturally).

I think this could be a great improvement, too. For Jaunty I wouldn't
mind working with Dustin and creating a GUI for ecryptfs-utils, if
there is interest, that allows the user to set it up, mount/unmount,
and toggle configuration options (bug #257901). This would allow a
desktop user to go through the whole process without touching a
terminal. Granted [un]mount support in nautilus would be slick.

[Bug 251260] Re: Please upgrade wxwidgets2.8 to 2.8.8.1 version.

2008-10-26 Thread Mike Rooney
Is this the same as python-wxgtk2.8? It wouldn't SEEM like it is (it
seems like this is wxwidgets not wxpython), but Devid linked the
wxPython changelog, and I was going to file an upgrade request for
python-wxgtk2.8 to 2.8.8.1 until I found this bug.

I wonder if it might be appropriate to do 2.8.8.1 as -updates since it
does fix some definite bugs and regressions with the 2.8.8.0 release,
especially some moderately bad mistakes made in img2py including a
blatant keyword argument typo. Anyone using 2.8.8.0 is going to have to
misspell a keyword argument ("functionCompatibile") to use a feature of
img2py. If this is not the proper place for a wxPython (python-wxgtk2.8)
upgrade request, please let me know, thanks!

[Bug 248475] Re: invisible status does not work for google talk account

2008-10-17 Thread Mike Rooney
Apparently XMPP (which GTalk uses) does not support invisible presence,
so this is not an issue with pidgin, it just isn't possible with XMPP
accounts. See http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0018.html for more
information.

However if someone thinks it should at least warn or mention this fact
when going invisible, file another bug and link it here in the comments
and I will triage it appropriately as a wishlist bug and see if upstream
is interested.

Re: [Bug 63352] Re: Creative labs X-Fi sound card unsupported

> I never would have thought I'd need to use WINDOWS to get good sound.
> It's unfathomable, really.

Windows isn't giving you good sound, Creative is with drivers. Tell
Creative you are a customer and you want them to support Linux, or
vote with your wallet for a company who already does. The problem is
that as soon as users abandon Linux because of poor driver support,
they tell the companies that they don't need to be supporting Linux!
It says, "I'd like for you to have Linux drivers, but I'll still buy
it if it doesn't and will use a different OS if need be". Imagine you
are in the companies position; it doesn't sound very profitable or
useful to support Linux, does it?

I definitely understand the strong desire to have support here, but I
think a lot of the anger (and there definitely is unnecessary anger in
some of the comments here) is directed at the wrong place. Canonical
is providing a free product and doing a pretty impressive job of
reverse-engineering support for companies who ignore them, but they
can only go so far. Creative is the company that is taking your money
and not living up to your expectations, not Ubuntu, IMO.

For the people mentioning accessibility, is it just that you need
sound, say for the blind or vision-impaired? Can't a cheap PCI or USB
sound card solve the issue in a usable way? Sorry if my ignorance in
this area is causing me to miss something; I am just trying to
understand the issues, so please let me know.

[Bug 283896] Re: can't use an empty configuration

2008-10-16 Thread Mike Rooney
Sebastien, this is a real and perfectly valid issue. You can't just "not
use" gnome-panel; it is integrated into the desktop experience and
provides no way to remove it from startup since it isn't explicitly
there in the first place. This issue is if you don't want to use it,
there is no apparent way to do this, although the intuitive way would be
to just remove the last panel like any other panel. The bug, as such, is
that you can't remove the last panel like any other panel.

Typically you have to resort to a dirty hack or two to stop gnome-panel
from starting, and we are quite familiar with this in the AWN world.
This is definitely a common issue with users using docks such as AWN who
no longer have a need for any panels but lack a simple or clean way to
remove them.

** Changed in: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid => Confirmed

** Summary changed:

- can't use an empty configuration
+ Can't remove all (last) gnome-panel panels

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

- Since I want to use awn instead of gnome-panel I'd like to remove all
- gnome-panel panels. However when attempting to remove the last panel,
- the menu item is greyed out.
+ Users are able to right click on panels of gnome-panel and select
+ "Delete This Panel". However when there is only one panel remaining,
+ this option is grayed out. This wouldn't be a problem if gnome-panel was
+ an entry in sessions that could simply be disabled/removed to stop it
+ from starting up, but this isn't the case.
+
+ Many users of docks such as AWN have no need for gnome-panel but must
+ resort to dirty hacks to stop it from running (such as renaming /usr/bin
+ /gnome-panel, which causes upgrade problems among others).
+
+ The cleanest solution would just be to allow the user to remove any
+ gnome-panel, whether or not it is the last. Ideally this would still
+ allow the Alt+F2 launcher to work which is bundled with gnome-panel, but
+ a simple way to stop gnome-panel from starting would suffice.

2008-10-15 Thread Mike Rooney
Hi LCID Fire, thanks for using Ubuntu and thanks for taking the time to
file this bug report! As far as I know this is not a regression, as it
has never been possible to remove the last panel. You can remove panels
until you try to do it on the last one, at which point the option will
be grayed out as you say. I agree it would be a nice feature and will
Confirm the issue and mark it as Wishlist.

There are guides for doing it online however, or just ask in #awn on

[Bug 271229] Re: screensavers broken in intrepid with compiz

2008-10-15 Thread Mike Rooney
** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 278112
   Screensaver doesn't start

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: electricsheep
+
+ NOTE: Seemingly NOT a duplicate of bug 278112. This bug is different
+ than the original bug because the original bug is fixed with unchecking
+ "Undirect Fullscreen Windows", the one reported here, however, is not
+ fixed with that.

electricsheep won't run for me in fullscreen mode as a screensaver in
Ubuntu Intrepid with an ATI X800 All In Wonder video card with compiz
enabled and running (using open driver). I run a widescreen Dell LCD
monitor at 1680x1050. I don't know whether the bug is actually in
electricsheep, compiz, or some Xorg related package.

I can run it from a terminal prompt to have it come up in a window:
electricsheep --root 0 and it's fine. The installed desktop file
launches it like this: electricsheep --root 1 --zoom 1 With or without
zoom, the --root 1 option kills it. If in gnome-screensaver I can
preview the screensaver perfectly with no problems but when it trys to
run it flashes to black and then immediately quits, putting you back on
  your desktop.

Disabling compiz temporarily and switching back to metacity instead and
electricsheep works perfectly fine. I read a bit and (with compiz
enabled) tried turning the setting "Unredirect fullscreen windows" both
on and off with no effect on electricsheep.

I also downloaded mplayer and tried running electricsheep like this:
electricsheep --mplayer 1 Interestingly enough, that works with the
version of electricsheep currently in the repo somewhat... it blacks out
the screen, but runs in 4:3 resolution in my widescreen monitor whereas
running electricsheep normally without mplayer (and compiz disabled)
  fills the entire screen.

I've ALSO tried the latest PPA 's from here:
https://launchpad.net/~flam3/+archive
Same effects... runs great without compiz or windowed but won't run as my
screensaver... and this version from the PPA won't accept either the --zoom 1
or --mplayer 1 command line options.

I'd appreciate any help. I really love this screensaver.

[Bug 283391] [NEW] Does not expand ~/ in arguments

2008-10-14 Thread Mike Rooney
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-do

Perhaps related to bug 280540, Do does not expand arguments like gnome-
panel's launcher does.

For example typing "python ~/script.py" doesn't work in Do, while it
does from a terminal or the g-p launcher.

Is a generic replace on the command of "~/" with the users home
directory dangerous, for run commands? If not it seems like it could be
a good solution.

No, I think the point of the bug report is that rar files are
associated with file-roller, though if you try to open them
file-roller just gives you an error. Instead it should offer to
install unrar (or unrar-free). A new user is going to see this error

Re: [Bug 267376] Re: [Request] OpenOffice.org 3.0 in Intrepid ibex release

2008-10-13 Thread Mike Rooney
Hi Exsecrabilus, thanks for your input but I think you are missing two
or three key points.

1) Intepid did not ship any beta/RC version of OO 3.0, like they did
with Gnome (2.23), so comparing the two is not valid. If there are any
serious bugs we may not have time to catch them and this could result
in a disappointing and unpolished experience for OO users.

2) There are users just as vocal and adamant as you on the OTHER side,
who would yell and scream if Ubuntu shipped OO 3.0 with bugs, and that
it shouldn't have been pushed in past the feature freeze just to
appease a few people who could easily install it themselves (see #3)
if they weren't concerned with something as stable and thoroughly
tested. A large part of the appeal of Ubuntu to many users is that
when a release comes out, all the applications have been tested for
months already and have all the kinks worked out. If we start throwing
in completely new versions of major applications mere weeks before a
release, Ubuntu will lose a lot of stability and reputation.

3) You (and any other user) will be easily able to install OO 3.0
yourself via a deb/ppa/backport if you so desire. It is a great
candidate for a backport and will probably be backported soon after
release (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports for
more information).

This seems like a win/win to me, since users who want stability and
polish get it by default, and users like yourself who want more
bleeding edge can easily enable it in many ways as I mentioned above.
I don't really see the gripe. As such if the decision is to stay with
2.4 for Intrepid (only 6 months after all), I think it makes sense,
and OO 3.0 can be stabilized by Intrepid backport users and Jaunty
alpha/beta testers.

[Bug 282439] Re: Resizing text in Firefox takes 25+ seconds to take effect

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Rooney
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in firefox-3.0.

For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of
applications (including Firefox) have bug reporting functionality built
in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the
Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue. You
can learn more about this feature at

[Bug 280540] [NEW] does not properly expand ~/

2008-10-08 Thread Mike Rooney
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-do

Attempting to open a directory such as "~/" or "~/Desktop" doesn't work
as of recent times. Gnome-Do recognizes that it is a directory and
offers to open it, but it silently fails. The terminal output is:

Error showing url: Error stating file '/home/yelena/~/Desktop': No such
file or directory

It seems to be expanding it and then appending the entire entry.

In addition, the error perhaps contains a typo, where "stating" should
be "starting".

Thanks! :)

dieterv and anyone else who can duplicate this bug (I've only had it
happen once), you can help by removing the 'quiet' and 'splash' options
from your boot entry (I think you hit 'e' when the grub timer is going

some more output when it gets stuck, such as perhaps the step it is
getting stuck on. If you do this and post the output here, we will have

2008-10-06 Thread Mike Rooney
Hi everyone! This bug is indeed in progress and will be addressed quite
soon. The current wallpaper is NOT the final one. Here is the relevant
discussion from a recent #ubuntu-devel IRC log
(http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2008/10/06/%23ubuntu-devel.txt):

[13:00] kwwii: is that dreary wallpaper *really* the final one?
[13:00] Hobbsee: no
[13:01] kwwii: oh thank goodness. What's the new one like?
[13:01] kwwii: and when will it land?
[13:01] Hobbsee: it is one that everybody loves :p
[13:01] Hobbsee: asap

Sounds like it might be
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Earthenibex_wallpaper
or a derivation thereof. Thanks everyone for expression your desires and
opinions; it definitely has an impact with Ubuntu.

[Bug 267761] Re: Wireless on Atheros 5213A drops often, is slow, and ath5k_pci consumes large amounts of CPU

2008-10-05 Thread Mike Rooney
Thanks coubi64, I will Confirm thanks to your input.

As an update for Leann, after more use with the madwifi it is an
improvement but still a definite regression from Hardy. It is slower and
doesn't seem to get as strong of a connection; I have had to reboot into
my Hardy install to connect to lower signal networks or get faster
speeds.

[Bug 278732] Re: AWN Quit Logoff Applet No Longer Allows Shutdown or Restart

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 252795 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252795

As Mark says this has nothing to do with AWN and is an issue with the
Intrepid beta. There is a fix available in a PPA in the duplicate bug
which you can test however; it works for me.

[Bug 197297] Re: Doesn't pick up pictures from evolution contacts

2008-10-04 Thread Mike Rooney
Regarding the Ubuntu task, can someone try with Intrepid? It has
libevolution3.0-cil 0.17.5 and as such should allow for this to work. If
so, I think as Dave mirrored upstream, this is Invalid in Ubuntu and we
can mark as Fix Committed in libevolution3.0-cil.

Re: [Bug 252795] Re: pressing the "Power" button shows a logout dialog

2008-10-03 Thread Mike Rooney
Fair enough, I can understand the reasoning. It would be extra slick
if the Power Management option "Ask me" was then appropriately split
into two options, something roughly like "Prompt me with power
options" and "Prompt me with session options", since I imagine some
people only used the power button to logout or lock and might prefer
this option. I understand the UI is frozen, but it might be something
to consider for Jaunty. If anyone agrees I can make a wishlist bug;
let me know.

[Bug 252795] Re: pressing the "Power" button shows a logout dialog

2008-10-03 Thread Mike Rooney
Yes, it seems to work after a restart, showing the power options dialog
instead of the logout dialog. I still think having them all together was
nice, and some people will complain that they can't logout/lock from the
power button now, but this is surely better! Is there any page or
archived discussion regarding the separation of the dialogs? I assume
this was just an upstream Gnome decision?
