Re: [Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives no device media found

Looks like this one persists in Natty Beta. Worse, I see no option in
Natty to downgrade to the old version of udisks as was the case in
 Lucid.

I will note that some of us engineer types still rely on floppies to
record data. We do this because we are using older test instruments with
built in floppy drives. These instruments are super expensive and have
long service lives so its impractical to replace them as we do with
computers that are updated every few years. As a result there are many
labs that will be using floppies for many years to come. Please try to
get this function working properly again in Ubuntu. Thanks!

I agree with John.

[Bug 645818] Re: Unknown keyword in configuration file: gfxboot

The problem is incompatibility between Syslinux of Ubuntu Maverick and
vesamenu.c32 of Ubuntu Lucid as reported here:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=662557

Try replacing the file vesamenu.c32 on the USB disk drive with that one
/usr/lib/syslinux/vesamenu.c32 of Ubuntu Maverick system or use
UNetbootin than works fine.

cool. as soon as it gets into the repositories, I'll be happy to test it... my

thanks for having a look at this!

[Bug 305739] [NEW] trackerd should detect corrupt index and reindex

2008-12-06 Thread Mikele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

hi there. first of all, I am on Intrepid, with the stock trackerd from
the repos.

I think that corrupt indexes are the cause of most of the problems people are
experiencing with tracker, such as persistent 100% cpu usage, exponential index
size growth, no results returned by the search tool.
in my specific case, I had all the symptoms above after I filled up the disk,
and tracker was indexing at the same time. I got no error message whatsoever,
and from there on tracker became a memory and cpu hog, and returned no results.

deleting ~/.cache/tracker and reindexing made it.

now, I think that the index should be a bit more resistant to problems
such as the disk filling up, but in case it gets corrupted, tracker
should be able to detect it, and popup something like index got
corrupted, do you want me to reindex? instead of keeping trying to read
it blowing up the CPU

thanks, let me know if I must add something.

[Bug 260780] Re: two-finger scrolling produces spurious button 5 events

just wanted to report that the patch at

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=30;filename=dell-

works fine on my system. The author reports it to break 'trackstick emulation

It also seems less hackish than the ignore (1,5855) patch.

pops out signaling that enfuse is not present on the system.

Either enfuse is included in the repositories and in the dependencies of

[Bug 191127] Re: simple-backup-config does not check for validity of regex exclusion rules

2008-02-19 Thread Mikele
ok, finally I found 5 minutes to fix this. now the config GUI checks for
validity of the regex,
warns the user and doesn't add the regex if it does not compile. check if this
try-except
approach fits your programming style.

probably, since there is no logging facility (I read you are going to implement
one, how is
the progress?) also sbackupd should handle more gracefully bad regexs, probably
printing
a warning to stderr and going on ignoring the mispelled regex.

regex are powerful but quite cryptic to newbies... since this aims at being a
simple backup
solution, it should be a bit tolerant, as long as it is not issuing meaningful
error messages.

let me know what are your views about this, I can work it out myself as
well.

best regards

mc

2008-02-19 Thread Mikele
sorry, I imagine this is not the proper place to ask, but my knowledge of
launchpad is superficial at best. I realy like this software, is simple but
effective, and I'd like to help, as it seems simple enough for me to give
side contributions.
I have noticed right now that it have been forked to a new version, so
I'd like to know where I should put my efforts, on sbackup or on nssbackup,
and in case whether it is better I submit patches to the current version or
I download the code from the development trunk and I submit diffs to
that code.

best regards

[Bug 191127] [NEW] simple-backup-config does not check for validity of regex exclusion rules

2008-02-11 Thread Mikele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sbackup

cheers everybody. I am on Gutsy, using sbackup 0.10.4.
If one enters an invalid regex in the simple-backup-config dialog, no warning
is issued,
the flawed regex is saved to sbackup.conf file, and when sbackupd is launched,
it fails miserably.

the problem is made even worse by the fact that simple-backup-config is not
reporting any error message from the sbackupd process it spawns.

beside the fact that probably one should find a way to report some information
about what's going on, at least when the backup is launched from the GUI,
this particular issue should be fixed, as it could take time for the average
user to
understand what's going wrong (ok, maybe the average user is not using regex,
indeed...)

being a GUI flaw, the fix should be trivial enough for me to implement it, I
would like
to have some advice as where it would be more appropriate to post a patch, here
or upstream?

thanks,

michele

however, the daemon didn't prompt me to create a new default keyring when I

   then, I tried again the
$ killall gnome-keyring-daemon; gnome-keyring-daemon -d
logged out the wifi and tried again. this time I was prompted for keyring

[Bug 108643] Re: nautilus, media containing multiple partitions cannot be unmounted(with eject) (USB connected)

2007-07-10 Thread Mikele
Uhm... my poit was rather that not all USB devices (actually quite a
few) have a phyisically meaningful eject function, so that in
principle Nautilus (or hal or whatever) should display -and issue- an
eject command only on devices which are eject capable. I understand
the point for displaying eject instead of unmount, as probably
newbies have no clue about what mounting/unmounting means, and that
probably this is again an issue of finding a balance between user
friendliness and UI dumbification. but unless we are capable of
detecting if a device can be ejected, I think that umount is the right
guy to call behind the scenes. Anyway, install the backported package
to have everything working form the GUI.

weird, shmi85, on my T60 HIBERNATE_MODE=platform does the trick, and
many other success stories come from thinkpad owners.

first, I would try the unpatched kernel, for which Guilherme Salgado has

go to the download location in the shell, and issue the command
$ sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic_2.6.20-15.28_i386.deb

pretty easy, thanks to Guilherme.

since you state thate your sound problem are not fixed by a hard
shutdown, I would also check if the settings of the sound card are
screwed up (no sound could come from a muted channel, and hiss from a
feedback due to the microphone input too loud and not muted).

just issue
$ sudo alsamixer

play around with the levels and see if anything changes.

 HIBERNATE_MODE in /etc/default/acpi-support to:

as requested by csd. Unfortunately, although it worked for two days, I
suspended the machine earlier this afternoon (power-saving mode rather
than the powered down shutdown or whatever of hibernate) and now the
sound is no longer working, even after a completely shutdown and
restart. In addition, occasionally I'm getting an extremely high pitched
feedback-like whine from the machine and quieter and lower in pitch
whines slightly more frequently, usually when I move the laptop but not
always. In the acpi-support file, there's a line refering to the suspend
function and changing it from S3 to S1. I'm assuming that has something
to do with amount of power conserved and I was hesitant to fiddle with
it because I really have no idea what changing the values does.

I'd like to try using the unpatched kernel, since it seemed to work for
a lot of people, but I'm very new at running a new linux system and I
don't know how to compile and install a new kernel while leaving the
rest of the system (GUI settings, etc) unchanged. If anyone's willing to
help me out with the specifics of this operation, please feel free to
email me at shmi85 at yahoo dot com. Thanks!

[Bug 93360] Re: Dhcdbd: message_handler: message handler not found under /com/redhat/dhcp/eth1 for sub-path eth1.dbus.get.reason

2007-06-25 Thread Mikele
I confirm this problem on a thinkpad T60/feisty. These error logs
appears sometimes when I try to connect to some open access wireless
networs; NetworkManager applet shows the connection as active, but I am
not able to connect nor to ping anywhere. Only difference with
successful connection to other networs seems to be the above mentioned
error messages in daemons.log

Any fixes or workaround in the wild?
thanks

[Bug 107668] Re: Setting an invalid mount point can make a removeable media unaccessible

2007-06-21 Thread Mikele
thanks to nicolas for trying to make the interface less misleading; while you
are at it, if you discover why specifying additional mount options causes the
mount to fail, no matter what the option format, please post it here! (I
understand that probably this would be a bit more hard than tweaking the
interface, but just in case...)
thank you again!

seems fine. is there a reason why you create a copy of the string?

text = gtk_editable_get_chars (editable, 0, -1);
char *p;

while (*p) { if (*p=='/') *p='_'; ++p; }

should work as well, if textorig is not needed anywhere else

[Bug 108643] Re: nautilus, media containing multiple partitions cannot be unmounted(with eject) (USB connected)

2007-06-14 Thread Mikele
even if the discussion about this bug is getting somewhat phylosophical, and
after all the important thing is that the updated HAL
makes its way to all the people experiencing this bug, as it effectively solves
it, IMHO an external USB storage device _cannot_ be ejected,
so there are two issues: 0.5.8 is wrong in issueing an eject command (moreover,
when two partitions are present, one could wish
to umount just one rather than ejecting the device), and the eject command
should behave more meaningfully when issued upon a device
with two partitions on it, or on a non-ejectable device.
that said, i leave to you more experienced guys the decision about to whom bug
report belongs better.

2007-06-02 Thread Mikele
I can also report the same bug on my sister's Fujitsu Amilo laptop, with Feisty
2.6.20-16-generic. HIBERNATE_MODE=platform did not help, whereas it did the job
on my lenovo T60.
A shutdown heals the problem.
It seems this bug affect quite a lot of machines, out there

[Bug 116322] in feisty, gnomebaker cannot burn CD whereas wodim can

2007-05-22 Thread Mikele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnomebaker

I am running 7.04 Feisty, standard versions of gnomebaker and wodim from the
repository. I have a lenovo thinkpad t60.
when I try to burn a CD using gnomebaker it fails (output follows). the strange
thing is that I can blank a CDRW from gnomebaker,
and even weirder is the fact that burning the very same ISO from the command
line

wodim dev=/dev/cdrw driveropts=burnfree fs=14M speed=4 -raw96r -eject -v
xyz.iso

running gnomebaker as root, or setting both gb and woodim SUID (as the error
message seemingly suggests) didn't help.
since burning from the command line works fine, it seems it is gnomebaker's
fault, maybe some nonstandard parameter
used in calling wodim.

I found references to this same problem here and there in the forums, so I
thought to file a bug.
any help or hint is appreciated.

[Bug 107668] Re: Setting an invalid mount point can make a removeable media unaccessible

2007-05-09 Thread Mikele
I confirm the bug on Feisty.
I can add that the whole volume properties dialog is prone to lock up the
drive, and
poorly documented at best.
I tried to change the default mount options
(it is mounting my ext3-formatted external HD noexec, and that's definitely
not what I'd want to),
I cannot understand in which format I should use (comma serparated? space
separated?), anyway
I am doing wrong, and this also causes the drive not to mount.
Again gconf-editor adjustment is required.
At least a warning for the unexperienced user is definitely a must.

[Bug 70850] show all users checkbox is gone

2006-11-08 Thread Mikele
Public bug reported:

The user-admin dialog in Edgy doesn't show the
show all users checkbox anymore, and only the users with UID 1000 are shown.
I can see how this may be regarded as a feature, simplifying the interface,
but in some cases may be quite annoying.

* test-case (my case): I'm adding a PC to a network with NFS shares; some users
over the network have UIDs 1000, and I need these UIDs to be preserved for
NFS to work properly. When I change the pre-defined UIDs, those users are not
listed anymore, and I have to edit their properties via console.
* test-case 2: I'm just curious, or want to have a look to the complete list of
users in a graphical fashion. users-admin was a good tool for that, when it was
able to show all users.

**WORKAROUND:
sudo vi /etc/login.defs
change UID_MIN to 1

this is not very clean, but I guess that if one needs to change
automatically generated user-ids, he should also be able to take care
not to assign reserved userids to normal users.
