[Bug 1488336] Re: authentication failed

2015-09-23 Thread Mikko Pesari
I think a SRU (for Trusty) might be in order since organizations using
Office365 are probably large and stick to LTS (like ours).

[Bug 1488336] Re: authentication failed

2015-09-23 Thread Mikko Pesari
Downloaded source for Ubuntu package version 1.18.2-1, applied the
patch, compiled and installed to 14.04 which has version 1.17.3-1. Newer
version works fine.

[Bug 1335391] Re: etckeeper with git breaks update-manager

2015-09-22 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Am I then only one thinking that etckeeper should have post-install
script to request git user.name and user.email fields to be filled for
root if those are missing? I know how to do that manually but I guess
random etckeeper user may not know that those are needed and it would be
much better user experience to ask for those during etckeeper install.

[Bug 1483800] [NEW] install fails when debconf answers are preseeded

2015-08-11 Thread Mikko Pesari
Public bug reported:

The preinst script has a bug that prevents the package from installing
non-interactively even when the administrator has preseeded the debconf

[Bug 1464958] Re: chromium-browser does not run in guest account

2015-08-03 Thread Mikko Rauhala
This is still a problem. I'm having the exact same issue (though on
google-chrome-stable-44.0.2403.125-1 )

Adding

  /opt/google/chrome/chrome Cx -> chromium,
  /opt/google/chrome/chrome-sandbox Cx -> chromium,

to /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/lightdm_chromium-browser did not help (I
tried that in case it was a matter of yet more filename changes on
google's packaging).

google-chrome --no-sandbox works around the issue, with obvious
usability (manual startup or manual configuration of switch), stability
and security drawbacks.

[Bug 445333] Re: remember password on printing to windows printers does not work

2015-03-13 Thread Mikko Pesari
Works perfectly for me. With an empty keychain, Firefox prompts for
credentials and saves them in the keychain, and printing just works.
Gedit (GTK3 application) is then able to use the same credentials,
although they are a bit different from what GTK3 saves to the keychain.

[Bug 1389798] Re: Using Bluetooth PAN leaves broken resolv.conf

2014-11-07 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Okay, so now I verified that the nameserver was added to resolv.conf.
Then I rechecked before disconnecting and noted that the extra
resolv.conf entry had disappeared (without changes to network
configuration in the meanwhile). nm-tool reported the correct nameserver
address still, and it seemed to work through the local proxy (one
presumes). So the generated resolv.conf entry seems both unnecessary and
possibly transient, though as said, it has persisted beyond
disconnecting the Bluetooth PAN at least two times.

Everything working even without the entry indicates that it probably
shouldn't be generated at all.

[Bug 1389798] [NEW] Using Bluetooth PAN leaves broken resolv.conf

2014-11-05 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Public bug reported:

Having paired an Android phone, the network manager menu in Unity
displays the "GT-I9300 Network" appropriately and I can tether over the
phone's mobile broadband just fine.

However, the PAN's nameserver setting is put directly into
/etc/resolv.conf (instead of doing the dnsmasq thing) _and_ is left
there, like so, even after disconnecting and connecting to a different
(WiFi) network:

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver 192.168.44.1
nameserver 127.0.1.1

(The 127.0.1.1 part isn't there before connecting to WiFi, it is added
at that point, but the now-defunct BT PAN nameserver address persists.)

This greatly interferes with DNS queries.

4) Detach VGA cable
- Display setting switches to 1-display mode as it should (i.e. windows on
external display are moved to the laptop display)
- xrandr output is exactly the same as in step 2
- Right after detaching these messages appear in syslog:

== syslog ==
kernel: [ 172.974774] [drm:intel_dp_start_link_train] *ERROR* too many voltage
retries, give up
# line above repeated 6 more times

train DP, aborting
colord: device removed: xrandr-Lenovo Group Limited-VP-0799

5) Attach VGA cable
- External display is not recognized in System Settings -> Displays
- xrandr output is still the same
- Each time the cable is attached, this message appears in syslog 3 times:

== syslog ==
kernel: [ 219.441432] [drm:intel_dp_aux_native_read] *ERROR* too many retries,
giving up

Once the VGA cable has been detached the external display won't be recognized
even after a soft reboot, UNLESS the cable is attached while rebooting. These
steps apply only if the machine is fully powered off first...

[Bug 1381494] [NEW] Full backup may not back up all files on Samba share yet report success

2014-10-15 Thread Mikko Kortelainen
Public bug reported:

Due to a regression in smbclient apparently starting from version 3.6,
not all files may be backed up by a BackupPC full backup. Yet BackupPC
reports the backup as successful.

The first NT_STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION error in a particular directory
stops the backup for the given directory, so that subsequent files and
subdirectories in that directory are not backed up. The processing will
continue with the next same level or upper level directory. Depending on
the order, some files and subdirectories may not be backed up.

So for example, if a backup of a C$ share on a Windows host processes
files in alphabetical order, and C$/pagefile.sys gives the
NT_STATUS_SHARING_VIOLATION error, the C$/Program Files, C$/Users and
C$/Windows among other directories will not be backed up.

The backup is nevertheless shown as a full backup and not a partial one
in the BackupPC user interface. Looking at the error log, the user can
see NT_STATUS_SHARING_VIOLATION errors, but there is no indication that
the rest of the directory was skipped because of this. And a typical
Windows host will have a number of those errors just because of files
that are in use. So it is not immediately obvious that a potentially
large number of files were skipped. Only by browsing the resulting
backup, or perhaps comparing backup and source sizes, can the user
notice missing files.

A subsequent incremental backup may actually back up more files, as it
may exclude some of the ones with those errors. I actually came across
this bug by seeing incrementals back up much more files than full
backups. Incrementals get deleted after a week in the default
configuration, leaving partial full backups.

It is quite alarming to realize this bug may affect all users with the
default packages and default configuration who are backing up Samba
shares with locked files - practically any Windows target.

This is probably related to this Samba bug:

https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10605

That bug is tagged to Samba 3.6, but I have seen the same behaviour with
Samba 4.1.6 in Trusty. The best way to see this is to run the backup
command from the command line and see it die prematurely after the first
error in the root of the share.

A workaround to this issue is to downgrade smbclient to version 3.5.

[Bug 1350357] Re: Support disabling of user switching per seat

2014-09-18 Thread Mikko Pesari
Using lightdm 1.10.2, I tested setting allow-user-switching to false.
Now, every time I log out of a Unity session I get the "The system is
running in low-graphics mode" window. None of the options really help -
I have to "start lightdm" from console to get to the greeter.

[Bug 1365485] Re: Kernel BUG with multiple NFS4 kerberos mounts on boot

2014-09-04 Thread Mikko Rauhala
I'll just chime in (from the same site as Jani) that lacking a proper
fix, it would be nice if the boot-time automounting worked around this
by default by forgoing parallel mounts, or have the facilities to be
instructed to do so.

[Bug 1360102] [NEW] Unity device blacklist nonfunctional

2014-08-22 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Public bug reported:

Installing 14.04 in a classroom dual-boot environment, Unity shows icons
for the Windows partitions on the launcher, nonfunctional since they
require root to mount. Such extraneous icons only serve to confuse the
user.

Googling, I found out about the com.canonical.Unity.Devices blacklist
gsettings entry. I made a script that generates a schema such as this,
for internal drives:

[com.canonical.Unity.Devices]
blacklist=['F236BFEF36BFB349','1A98C11998C0F473','c251a534-47dd-4ecb-a62c-2ced6914ef4a','122357ec-3130-482f-b20e-a4c6522e0873']

Here's the corresponding output of blkid -o list
device fs_type labelmount point UUID
---
/dev/sda1ntfsSystem (not mounted)F236BFEF36BFB349
/dev/sda2ntfsOSDisk (not mounted)1A98C11998C0F473
/dev/sda3swap
c251a534-47dd-4ecb-a62c-2ced6914ef4a
/dev/sda4ext4 /
122357ec-3130-482f-b20e-a4c6522e0873

I put the file in /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas and ran glib-compile-
schemas on it. The entry _does_ show up in a user's session as evidenced
by gsettings get and dconf-editor. dconf-editor also has a documentation
line for the entry that indicates that this _should_ indeed prevent the
named drives from appearing.

However, the icons persist in appearing, even on a clean home directory
(no old user configuration to confuse anything).

Can this be fixed, or is there another way to prevent Unity from showing
local internal drives to users who have no means of accessing them?
Disabling drive icons altogether would be suboptimal but perhaps
workable too, though it'd be preferable that the removable drives would
get icons. However, even removing unity://devices from
com.canonical.Unity.Launcher favorites didn't prevent the icons from
appearing (though the same edit did succeed in removing other
application icons, so the setting itself went through properly).

[Bug 1023051] Re: gssd ignores RPCGSSDOPTS in /etc/default/nfs-common

Sorry, but I don't understand the reasoning behind this decision to
exclude gssd options from the default file. It already includes
"STATDOPTS" and setting "GSSDOPTS" here too would seem consistent. Isn't
this what the default file is for?

[Bug 1198283] Re: Huawei E3276 will not recognized correctly

2014-06-29 Thread Mikko Majuri
This bug still exists with (atleast) Xubuntu 14.10 LTS.

Huawei e3276 correct Vendor:Product is 12d1:1506, but it gets recognized as
12d1:14fe pretty often.
Sometimes a miracle happens and it gets recognized correctly but then usually
Ubuntu doesn't launch the connection manager .

2014-05-08 Thread Mikko Pesari
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 445333 ***

There is definite improvement in Trusty, since saving the credentials to
the keyring now works. However, they are only used if the user opens the
s-c-p queue window for the specific printer... Also, running
s-c-p-applet seems to release only one job from the queue and then stops
working.

[Bug 1264548] [NEW] nameservice abstraction denies access to sssd

2013-12-27 Thread Mikko Pesari
Public bug reported:

The sssd nss module tries to read cached data from
/var/lib/sss/mc/{group,passwd} as described in #1056391. In addition to
this, it seems that if cached data is not found, the module tries to
connect to the sssd daemon via socket at /var/lib/sss/pipes/nss.

My system is configured to get user and group data from Active Directory
through sssd. When CUPS is configured to use an AD group, it won't start
because it can't resolve the group due to AppArmor enforced profile:

For example:

# grep SystemGroup /etc/cups/cups-files.conf
SystemGroup "Domain Users"

# cupsd -t
"/etc/cups/cups-files.conf" contains errors.

# strace cupsd -t |& grep sss
open("/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnss_sss.so.2", O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = 5
open("/var/lib/sss/mc/group", O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = 5
connect(6, {sa_family=AF_LOCAL, sun_path="/var/lib/sss/pipes/nss"}, 110) = -1

My problem can be fixed by allowing read/write access to the nss socket
(perhaps pam should be allowed too for some other applications):

I'm having the same problem on my UX31A. Only the external monitor
works, the internal one stays blank. Cannot use the computer at all

the bug no 1195483 as this only appears with 13.10. Everything worked

[Bug 1255507] Re: Running unclutter without "-noevent" causes focus problems for Firefox and Thunderbird

2013-11-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
I believe that Firefox and Thunderbird are standalone programs running
on Ubuntu; there's no dependency on XULRunner and the directories
/usr/lib/firefox and /usr/lib/thunderbird seem to contain different
libxul.so implementations. As such, it may be that XULRunner is okay but
Firefox and Thunderbird are faulty.

[Bug 1255507] Re: Running unclutter without "-noevent" causes focus problems for Firefox and Thunderbird

2013-11-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
As you can see in the bug report, I'm still running precise (12.04) so I
cannot easily upgrade to unclutter version 8-19.

Reading the debian bug report I'm pretty sure that this bug is something
else because I haven't seen any extra CPU usage. The incorrect focus
movement seems to be single-shot process, as far as I know.

The only thing that goes wrong is that the keyboard focus is in
incorrect window (I don't know how Firefox/Thunderbird creates the
windows and how it's possible that the window manager renders focus
indicators in one window and keyboard input goes to another window. If
Firefox/Thunderbird does process wide input handling, then it does make
sense and the only thing going wrong is Firefox/Thunderbird internal
focus book keeping).

[Bug 1255507] [NEW] Running unclutter without "-noevent" causes focus problems for Firefox and Thunderbird

2013-11-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

It seems that the default configuration for "unclutter" causes Firefox
and Thunderbird (probably all XUL applications) to randomly lose focus.

Examples:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1231588
https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=111&t=117704&start=15
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1234470

The default configuration in `/etc/default/unclutter` should probably
include '-noevents' in addition to current flags in EXTRA_OPTS. Adding
'-grab' should be considered, too.

[Bug 1231588] Re: Firefox windows don't accept focus

2013-11-26 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
I guess this may be caused by package "unclutter" (which I do have
installed):

https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=111&t=117704&start=15
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1234470

I will try running it with '-noevents' and if that does not fix the
issue, I'll try living without it and seeing if that fixes the problem.

[Bug 1231588] Re: Firefox windows don't accept focus

2013-11-26 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
I have similar issues with both Firefox 25.0.1 and Thunderbird 24.1.1. I
have multiple extensions installed on both, but neither has a single
same extension (so either this may be caused by multiple different
extensions or something else is going on).

Additional info:

- I have been hit with this problem every now and then since around
Firefox 10 and Thunderbird 3. I think this is a problem in Ubuntu XUL
core because the problem is visible with both Firefox and Thunderbird.

- I have been hit with this problem using at least Gnome 2.x, Unity and
Cinnamon desktop environments so I'd guess this is not related to the
window manager. I haven't used KDE long enough to verify if this problem
is visible in that environment, too.

- Since I have reduced the system latency(*) I've hit this problem more
often; I guess it's some kind of race condition between some paraller
threads or processes doing something. The system is running on i7-3770k
with HT enabled (without overclocking).

[Bug 1220677] Re: pg_send_query(): Cannot set connection to blocking mode

2013-10-11 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
The justification for this fix is as follows:

- The patch is obviously safe (it does not touch code outside the
functions mentioned in the description and those functions are already
broken)

- The patch affects PostgreSQL library of PHP, no critical
infrastructure or kernel

- The bug may cause loss of user data due to losing database connection.
Actual data loss depends on PHP application code running on top of the
library and may or may not happen in practice.

** Description changed:

- (I think the package should be php5-pgsql but launchpad wants me to use
- "php5" for some reason.)
+ [Impact]

pg_send_query() fails because of an implementation error if connection

2013-10-02 Thread Mikko Tamminen
I am running the latest kernel, and the system feels almost alarmingly
snappy compared to before. Thanks!

[Bug 1070449] Re: "Login without password" option effectively locks super user out!

2013-09-05 Thread Mikko Saarinen
I disagree that this bug is greeter related (even if you set your new
password, you haven't told greeter to use it to login, but there is
still the option chosen to log in without one).

What this does, which is more serious for the new user, it's that it
disables the admin password and effectively locks you out of any
maintenance activities.

The logical way would be to inform PAM that this account may be used to
log in without password, but leave the user password otherwise intact so
sudo can still make use of it so the user still has access to elevated
rights when needed.

My two cents for this old bug, because I think it still affects the
current distribution too, though I can't test it at the moment.

[Bug 1220677] [NEW] pg_send_query(): Cannot set connection to blocking mode

2013-09-04 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

(I think the package should be php5-pgsql but launchpad wants me to use
"php5" for some reason.)

pg_send_query() fails because of an implementation error if connection
is done to remote host and query string is long OR transaction is very
long.

The problem is caused by the implementation not following the PostgreSQL
documentation at http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.1/static/libpq-
async.html#LIBPQ-PQFLUSH

"PQflush: [...] After sending any command or data on a nonblocking
connection, call PQflush. [...]"

Related PHP Bug: https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=65015
Patch:
https://bugs.php.net/patch-display.php?bug_id=65015&patch=pg_send_query_flush_buffer.patch&revision=latest
Test script (from PHP bug):
---
$len = 10; // This may need to be increased, depending on db server.
$sql = "select 1" . str_repeat(' ', $len - 8);
$con = pg_connect('host=db-host.example.com dbname=postgres user=postgres
password=password');
pg_send_query($con, $sql);
pg_get_result($con);
---

Note that the test script only fails if host is remote (connected using
TCP/IP).

perhaps?)

The system was originally installed from 9.10 install media and later

I have had to fix other issues by hand after the latest upgrade so this
*may* be upgrade related issue.

successfully launch firefox (with empty profile):

[Bug 1196433] [NEW] Enigmail is prompting for GPG password constantly

2013-07-01 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce (I'm guessing here)

1. Receive an encrypted message

Expected result:

My password is prompted if I try to open the message.

Actual result:

My password is prompted no matter which email message I'm currently
viewing. If I cancel the prompt, I get re-prompted within 1-120 seconds.
As a result, I have currently disabled the enigmail add-on for the
account I'm normally using because the modal password prompt is getting
in the way. As far as I know, the password prompt is displayed by my GPG
agent and the calling software should take the hint to not re-request
the password immediately again if I hit cancel.

Extra information:

I'm guessing that the prompting is caused by background indexing done by
Thunderbird. This is problematic for two reasons:

1. I cannot know which message is being decrypted so I cannot delete it,
or prevent indexing it (if at all possible)

2. If thunderbird can index it, TB will keep unencrypted index data for
the message -- which is highly unwanted because the message was
encrypted in the first place.

I'm not sure if updating to 1.5.1 would help
(http://www.enigmail.net/download/changelog.php#enig1.5.1).

I've hit this multiple times during last week. The cause for me might be
either graphics adapter driver (i915) or VirtualBox kernel driver

[Bug 1176327] Re: Compiz crashes on a daily basis, will not restart

2013-05-12 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Changing package to libgl1-mesa-dri due to the xorg-edgers driver
upgrade mentioned before eliminating the issue. I am not positive if I
should chalk it up to xserver-xorg-video-radeon instead but I get the
feeling it's an OpenGL side issue since Compiz does render through that.

Compiz has now run with the edgers driver without crashes for a week or
so for me (a duration unthinkable with the original raring driver),
though the edgers driver does have the occasional freeze (which it
recovers from), especially when a large window is being created.

I am still open to trying more conservative upgrades to the original
raring packages. I can also downgrade from the edgers repository and run
specific tests on the original raring driver on request. (Still not sure
why compiz had problems restarting after a crash though.)

** Package changed: compiz (Ubuntu) => mesa (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1176327] Re: Compiz crashes on a daily basis, will not restart

2013-05-07 Thread Mikko Rauhala
I tried upgrading to the radeon driver in the xorg-edgers PPA shortly
after my last message. Obviously the duration of the test is short, but
it has been stable so far. I'll mention how it goes. Meanwhile, raring's
radeon driver might be the culprit (though I still don't know why compiz
refuses to restart - IIRC I also tested running some GLX client,
possibly glxgears, after one of the crashes, and it started up, so I
don't think the driver state was at least completely borked).

This xorg-edgers driver version sometimes freezes the screen for a few
seconds though, so it's not ideal. It has recovered from the freezes so
far without other ill effects.

I am open to trying out specific suggested versions of the driver
packages.

[Bug 1176327] Re: Compiz crashes on a daily basis, will not restart

2013-05-04 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Crashed again during suspend for the night or resume (doesn't do that
every time either, possibly again triggered by the screensaver, but
can't be sure). Checked that my recollection on metacity being able to
start properly was correct. It starts fine. compiz --replace after
metacity is running still fails similarly.

Oh, by the way, the compiz output got snipped. The first attempt crashes
in a bus error as the following ones do. (Väylävirhe is bus error in
Finnish.)

[Bug 1176327] [NEW] Compiz crashes on a daily basis, will not restart

2013-05-04 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 13.04, compiz crashes pretty much on a daily basis.
At least once on making mplayer go full screen, and sometimes even when
the computer is just left alone (possibly triggered by screensaver).
Unity panels disappear as well.

I generally have a leftover undecorated terminal to try to do recovery
from, but compiz won't even restart, I have to kill my session and start
over from scratch (a reboot is not necessary, however). Killing the
leftover decorator and *unity* and *indicator* processes had no effect
in restarting attempts. Pending a solution, even a hint what needs
cleaning up for a clean restart of compiz without having to exit the
whole session would be welcome. IIRC I tried to start metacity once and
it started, though was less than fully useful.

Here's what comes out when trying to restart it; at first it seems to
think that Unity isn't hardware supported, but it is, on the radeon
driver: OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV770. That'll get
cleared up on killing the decorator.

Incidentally, the panel crash indicator asked if I want to report this
but then just sat there for a while and quit without doing anything...
This is manually through ubuntu-bug.

If I understood correctly the bug 1130690 is about setting defaults
settings correctly (namely, the PAPERSIZE environment variable). This
bug was about libpaper honoring LC_PAPER over PAPERSIZE (see rationale
in bug description).

Because this is rather more of a wishlist issue than a bug (and because
the hardware isn't on me at this point) skipping unnecessary log
submission. It's just the usual, new USB device noticed but not
registered to any driver.

[Bug 1102510] [NEW] Lacking USB ids for asix ethernet dongles shipped by Lenovo

2013-01-21 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Public bug reported:

Lenovo is shipping laptops with USB ethernet dongles with the common
asix chipset handled by the asix.ko kernel module, but the all new USB
ids (*sigh*) are missing from at least 12.04 LTS kernels. It would be
very convenient if you could add this id to the stock 12.04 LTS kernel,
adding support for a common dongle with minimal work. (I have also
verified that the dongle seems to work if it just identifies the ID.)

The USB id to be added for handling by the asix.ko driver is as follows:
Bus 001 Device 014: ID 17ef:7203 Lenovo

See also the same issue on OpenSUSE forum:
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/hardware/479678-lenovo-carbon-x1-usb-ethernet-dongle-not-working-ax88772b.html

[Bug 1091986] Re: ulatencyd causes random kernel crashes during boot

Does ulatencyd collect any data from the system that is used for

something...

[Bug 1091986] Re: ulatencyd causes random kernel crashes during boot

2012-12-19 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Additional info: once the system is running, I can remove the "exit 1"
from /etc/init.d/ulatencyd and then start ulatencyd process so this
seems to be some kind of race condition in the kernel. Some crashes have
kernel watchdog messages saying "Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu 1"
(sometimes the LOCKUP was on cpu 0).

Is it possible that the ulatencyd gets started before the system is
running on both cores (this system has dual core processor) and kernel
crashes with some feature that ulatencyd uses if all CPUs are not yet
up? Perhaps this really is a kernel bug that is triggered by ulatencyd?

[Bug 1091986] Re: ulatencyd causes random kernel crashes during boot

2012-12-19 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Additional info: I was able to boot into "recovery mode" and diagnose
the system from there. However, trying to run normal boot resulted in
kernel crash every time (I booted about 30 times while trying to fix the
system). The crash occured usually before the purple "Ubuntu" boot
screen was visible but one the system crashed in the lightdm greeter and
I was able to move the mouse cursor and move focus to password input
before the crash. I guess that the exact moment of the crash was
depending on what ulatencyd was doing during startup and during that
boot, ulatencyd was running slightly later than usual.

The system is installed on Intel 320 series SSD so the actual boot is
pretty fast. My monitor is quite slow to display the image after
resolution change so I'm not sure what the system was trying to display
the moment the crashes occurred.

[Bug 1091986] [NEW] ulatencyd causes random kernel crashes during boot

2012-12-19 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

I've been running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit with ulatencyd for months now
and after rebooting yesterday, I hit a very hard to diagnose kernel
crash. It seemed that random processes (usually Xorg, sometimes apache2,
mysqld etc.) caused kernel BUG and PANIC triggers. After trying all the
kernels I had installed it got clear that the problem was not caused by
kernel version.

I finally was able to detect that the problem was caused by ulatencyd
doing something early in the boot process that caused kernel to crash. I
fixed the problem by adding "exit 1" at the start of the
/etc/init.d/ulatencyd script to prevent normal startup of ulatencyd
without uninstalling it.

The system had been running for two months before the restart so
ulatencyd had probably collected lots of data during that time.

My guess is that ulatencyd causes some kind of race condition in the
kernel early in the boot process that causes kernel crashes.

I'll attach a couple of photos of the kernel crashes.

[Bug 1084956] [NEW] nm-applet goes unresponsive randomly

2012-11-30 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Public bug reported:

nm-applet sometimes goes unresponsive, generally after a couple of days
of intermittent laptop use (including suspends). The menu does come up,
but choosing an interface to activate doesn't do anything for either
wifi or mobile networks. Not even a visible attempt is made to connect,
nor is a failure reported.

Killing nm-applet and restarting it is a functional workaround (and thus
is also logging out and back in), so it's clearly the applet and not
network manager itself that's the problem. While there is a workaround,
this is likely to be very frustrating for users, especially those less
likely to come up with the kill/restart workaround.

Using the standard Unity interface, if that matters.

[Bug 1068341] Re: No way to specify correct dependencies for dkms packages

2012-10-25 Thread Mikko Saarinen
Can't you just make each new kernel version to be depended of it's header files
so you would always have them installed?
Not all need them, but wouldn't that be a small price to pay?

[Bug 1016759] Re: unity-panel-service crashed with SIGSEGV in __memset_x86_64() from memset() from g_slice_alloc0() from g_type_create_instance()

2012-10-23 Thread Mikko Saarinen
Ok

Can't be sure if this is the same bug, but when nvidia kernel modules
are in use, I get no top or side panels in desktop after I've logged in.
Only the mouse cursor over the default wallpaper. Right clicking opens
desktop properties window, so some functionality is still left.

With the free xorg nouveau drivers things work ok, but the left panel is
grey a little while after I've logged in, but soon turns to normal
colour (transparent?)

I've got GeForce GTX 660 Ti (GK104) if that helps out. Also I have pure
64 bit installation and haven't modified or installed anything yet.

How to check if my problem is caused by the same issue? dmesg or what?

[Bug 1070449] [NEW] "Login without password" option effectively locks super user out!

2012-10-23 Thread Mikko Saarinen
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 12.10 with the option to log my main user with a password.
Then I added two other users and changed all three accounts to log in without a
password.

This nulled my main user's password and stopped the ability to sudo and make
any system wide changes!
Also the password can not be set back on, as there is no valid password to
authorize any actions! In effect, you are completely left without a super user
for your computer and cannot install updates or programs or do a whole lot of
anything.

There is a remedy to this and it is to go to the terminal and typing
passwd, after which you can re-set your password. However this is not
clear to many users, and that's why the Users panel simply should not be
able to null your password even if you prefer to login without one.

Very critical to get fixed asap!

[Bug 1021069] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000020; EIP is at sysfs_do_create_link+0x23/0x1d0

2012-10-17 Thread Mikko Vänttinen
Hi, I have to say first that I'm new to linux and ubuntu especially (had
debian for a while). I'm running the same problem(Unable to handle
kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0020) with Wacom Wireless Pen
Tablet model: CTE-630BT. My OS crashes immidiedly when I connect the
tablet via Bluetooth. Anyone still looking for solution or is there a
fix available, because I didn't find one?

[Bug 971051] Re: no alt+tab in gnome classic session

2012-10-08 Thread Mikko Pesari
Thanks Arnulf, I made another workaround based on your tip.

We already distributed the file /usr/share/gconf/defaults/99-our-
defaults to workstations, so we can just override the default
active_plugins specified in 10_compiz-gnome.

That file in turn comes from the package compiz-gnome and I think the
package defaults should include staticswitcher.

[Bug 1050434] [NEW] UMTS connections require occasional reconfiguring

2012-09-13 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Public bug reported:

On occasion, network-manager fails to get an UMTS network connection,
and quickly refuses all future attempts to use the connection.
Reconfiguration of the interface (exactly the same as before) will fix
it; seems like nm may mistake a transient error for a permanent one or
something. Even removing the connection description from
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections and copying the exact same file
back, and attempting a reconnect will fix this particular situation.
(This is what I did also in this instance.)

Relevant syslog snippet around the attempt to connect to my provider,
Saunalahti:
