I would argue that upgrades from gutsy tribe to gutsy final is not a big
concern, though. Tribe releases are alpha releases for a reason. On
the other hand, if feisty to gutsy upgrades are broken, we should be
more worried and try hard to fix it before release.

Have you done any test of upgrading from feisty to gutsy (beta)? If
not, are you willing to do such tests?

The correct setting should have [EMAIL PROTECTED] Actually, I am

It seems you are not using the im-switch system to set up scim. Please

This is expected. Closing scim in XIM mode will affect other

[Bug 128458] Re: [FTBFS] Bashism in debian/rules

2007-10-02 Thread Ming Hua
Basically the Ubuntu fix relies on that /bin/sh is dash, because without
"-e", bash can't handle "\n", the escaped character:

(in bash)
$ echo 'from rebuildd.RebuilddConfig import RebuilddConfig\nprint
RebuilddConfig(True).dump()'
from rebuildd.RebuilddConfig import RebuilddConfig\nprint
RebuilddConfig(True).dump()

So if the package is built on a system with /bin/sh linked to bash, the
package will have a broken debian/rebuildrc file.

I don't know about POSIX, but I doubt "treat \n as newline" is POSIX sh
behavior as you claimed.

While the breakage won't happen for our buildds, and I agree that this
fix works for Ubuntu, it's not exactly better than the problem it tries
to fix -- it just changes bash-only behavior to dash-only behavior.
This particular FTBFS bug can probably be tagged "fix released" (I just
reopened because it's convenient), but I still believe this is a wrong
fix and should be re-fixed in future releases (most likely by a sync
with Debian).

I see that you've commented on Debian maintainer's blog, let's see what
he and other people say.

[Bug 147690] xdg-user-dirs: XDG user directories not recongnized after moving $HOME

2007-10-01 Thread Ming Hua
Public bug reported:

I'm new to this XDG user directory thing, so I may be overlooking
something here. But I always think that a false alarm is better than an
ignored problem, so here it is.

I did a fresh install of gutsy beta (Ubuntu i386 alternative). Since I
already have a Linux system on this computer, I want to reuse my /home
partition. But I don't want to mount /home at installation time,
fearing it would mess up those .xxx configuration files/dirs under the
default /home/minghua/ directory. So I just installed everything on one
partition.

After installation I logged into GNOME, found the XDG dirs created, with
the default names since I use en_US.UTF-8 locale. I can see them in the
"Places" menu on the panel. All good so far.

I logged out and rebooted to the other Linux system, mounted the Ubuntu
partition. Then I copied over the /home/minghua/ dir on Ubuntu
partition to my old /home partition, as /home/minghua-ubuntu/. I
changed the /etc/fstab file on Ubuntu partition to mount the correct
partition as /home, and changed /etc/passwd file to make me use the new
$HOME as well.

Now reboot back to Ubuntu. I can log in fine, and my $HOME is properly
set, my other settings are kept. However, I can't see the XDG dirs in
the "Places" menu anymore, although the dirs under /home/minghua-ubuntu/
haven't been touched. I can see, on the other hand, two entries of
"Documents" and "Music", but those point to the dirs with those name
under /home/minghua/.

So is XDG user dir supposed to work when $HOME is not equal to
/home/$USER? If yes, what have I missed?

2007-09-30 Thread Ming Hua
Gutsy now uses Debian's im-switch setting which sets QT_IM_MODULE=xim in
/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim. So this bug is fixed.

The /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim-immodule setting unfortunately doesn't
address scim-qtimm yet, but that's a separtate issue.

[Bug 143955] Re: autopkgtest gutsy scim-hangul: erroneous package!

2007-09-29 Thread Ming Hua
This is the debdiff for a new upload that fix this bug. Tested with
"debian/rules build; debian/rule binary" build process (similar to what
autopkgtest does) in a pbuilder chroot login, also tested installing the
built package. Tested to build in pbuilder as well.

The patch here is identical to the one in #128222. Maybe Ian can
sponsor this one as well? Thanks.

Also, Debian's new upload (0.3.1-1, new upstream, should be uploaded
soon) will include this fix as well.

Correct, no need to pass this one to Debian BTS. Actually Debian's
package has fixed this bug in version 0.5.7-2, even before it's reported
in LP. (It's a side effect of some tweaks in debian/rules.)

Ubuntu most likely won't want 0.5.7-2 though, as the only user-visible
change is a Dutch translation update.

As noted here and on the Launchpad bug page, this bug is a duplicate of
another bug.

Please read bug #66104 to see a workaround there. And please send any

The attached debdiff should fix this bug. I've tested using "dpkg-
source -x [...]; cd [...]; debian/rules build; fakeroot debian/rules

installing all the built packages using debi, but I didn't test running

good measure, the package is built with pbuilder as well.

2007-09-19 Thread Ming Hua
octave 2.9 recommends gnuplot. I don't see a problem here, because:

1. The plot feature is not essential for octave. It's one of the
important features, sure, but I can imagine some people who use octave
may not need/want to install gnuplot.

2. IIRC, the package management tools in gutsy should install
Recommends.

By the way, don't write gnuplot as GNUPlot, it has nothing to do with
GNU (I believe gnuplot predates GNU projet).

Indeed it's a broken dependency problem. But since
/usr/lib/scim-1.0/scim-panel-gtk belongs to scim package, you should
look at scim. Of course it doesn't depend on scim-gtk2-immodule either.

This is expected for non en_US locales. It's due to a change in gutsy.

[Bug 126374] Re: HOME END DEL keys not working

2007-08-20 Thread Ming Hua
Yes, I've read that upstream bug, however I don't quite believe what is
claimed there.

Can you please point out which Linux system has gnuplot compiled with
builtin readline and have HOME, END, and DELETE keys working? In the
upstream bug only the upstream developer can make it work in kconsole.
The upstream bug reporter uses Gentoo, and Debian and Ubuntu both have
this problem. It's a bit hard to imagine that all these distributions
have "broken configuration".

Anyway, I'm not going to argue on this point since it's not my bug and
it doesn't bother me.

"dpkg -l uim-hangul" on your system?

Also, please give more infomation about your system. Are you using
feisty (7.04)? How did you install scim and the Korean input methods?
More information can help diagnose the problem. Thanks.

Hmm, sorry, I somehow missed this mail.

Since the history file issue has been fixed in 4.2 by upstream, I assume
this is not the right place to discuss the patch anymore.

But yes, I am still interested in adding BSD readline-clone (I believe

I suspect you are using a non-en_US UTF8 locale, and haven't read the
documentation in /usr/share/doc/scim/README.Debian.gz (yes it's a bit
old, but the /SupportedUnicodeLocales part still apply to Ubuntu).

The zombie process is probably due to your using im-switch (Debian bug

[Bug 128222] Re: gutsy/amd64: ftbfs / autopkgtest failure

2007-07-25 Thread Ming Hua
This FTBFS is due to autopkgtest running "debian/rules build" without
running "debian/rules clean" first.

The clean target removes config.{guess, sub} file, then in conig.status
target the ln command assumes these files are not there. This can be
easily fixed by using "-f" option for ln, but since all buildd runs
"debian/rules clean" before building, and policy explicitly says build
target may need clean target to be run first, shouldn't autopkgtest be
less restrictive on this?

work.

The format is rather simple, just:
/SupportedUnicodeLocales =
where list is a comma-separated list of all locales.

This may not work. The locale of the application using scim is
important, too.

How do you know which locales have scim translated when scim is using

[Bug 93740] Re: [can-not-install] maintainer script failure

2007-07-21 Thread Ming Hua
I did an installation of jadetex on feisty (with only feisty and feisty-
security repos) when dealing with bug #122863. The installation was
successful without any problems.

The bug was reported before final feisty release. So maybe it's fixed
in the final release?

(The link and patch Gongyi gave don't mean much IMHO. They are from
2000, about jadetex 2.18 (feisty has 3.13) and teTeX 1.0 (feisty has
3.0) on Debian woody, after all.)

[Bug 122863] Re: package texlive-base-bin 2007-11 failed to install/upgrade: post-installation script spawns thousands of processes

2007-07-21 Thread Ming Hua
As explained, feisty -> gutsy upgrade works fine now. The reporter also
no longer consider this a problem anymore and agree to close this bug.
If anyone is still experiencing the same problem, please feel free to
reopen or file a new bug.

Alas, you are right. The email addresses are only visible to logged-in
users.

I've done a feisty->gutsy upgrade test.  I started from a minimal feisty
chroot, use only feisty and feisty-security repositories, and installed
xmltex and jadetex. Following are the versions of relevant packages:
tex-common 0.42
xmltex 1.9-11.1ubuntu1
jadetex3.13-7.1ubuntu2

Then I did a single "apt-get dist-upgrade" to gutsy, without any
problems. After upgrade the package versions are:
tex-common 1.9
xmltex 1.9-12
jadetex3.13-8ubuntu1

And of course, the TeX system was upgraded from teTeX to TeXlive.

So I think this bug is fixed in gutsy.

I have the package (and version) lists, apt-get logs available. But I
think a successful upgrade is not that interesting, so I'm not attaching
them.

[Bug 66104] Re: scim input freezes in various applications

2007-07-19 Thread Ming Hua
I seem to be experiencing more such keyboard input freeze in Debian's
1.4.6-1 (compared with previous 1.4.4 releases) as well. The new
upstream release 1.4.7 claims to have fixed such issues with firefox (I
don't know the details), and in my own testing, 1.4.7 indeed freeze much
less often than 1.4.6.

The 1.4.7-1 package was just uploaded to Debian unstable today. But
there are some significant changes in Ubuntu's package, so some
developer needs to do the merge work to bring 1.4.7 into gutsy.

Scim 1.4.7-1 was just uploaded to Debian unstable today. Please contact
some Ubuntu developer to merge with Debian to fix this bug.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the fast response.

First, Launchpad (the BTS, as well as other things, of Ubuntu)
automatically subscribe a bug reporter to the bug, so any reply to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] will be sent to the original reporter as well.
In Debian's term, no nnn@ and nnn-submitter@ differentiation.

If you still want to contact the bug reporter, you can get the email
address by first going to the bug page:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/texlive-bin/+bug/122863
Then clicking on the reporter's name (at the top of the page, after
"reported on ... by"), which leads to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/~shiyee
The click on the "Overview" tab and go to:
https://launchpad.net/~shiyee/
Now you can see the email address in the left panel "Confirmed e-mail
addresses".

I see. I am going to test a feisty->gutsy upgrade this weekend (if
nobody beats me) and report back.

[Bug 122863] Re: package texlive-base-bin 2007-11 failed to install/upgrade: post-installation script spawns thousands of processes

Debian TeX maintainers, this Ubuntu bug has the whold history available
at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122863.

As Norbert has said before in the thread, feisty does not have >= 1.0
tex-common, but 0.42 (I think you meant to say "resembles etch"). I
assume that could cause some problem during upgrade?

> We should really try to get exact version numbers (aptitude log?)

Unfortunately the reporter used apt-get and couldn't provide a clear
package version history. After reading the dpkg log provided, I think
the upgrade went as follows:

System at feisty:
tex-common 0.42
tetex stuff (version unclear, but I can check if needed)
xmltex 1.9-11.1ubuntu1
jadetex 3.13-7.1ubuntu2

During upgrade:
tex-common upgraded from 0.42 to 1.9
tetex stuff upgraded to dummy package, pulling in texlive
xmltex and jadetex didn't seem to be touched, probably because the
whole installation aborted
texlive-base-bin's postinst failed

After the failed upgrade:
xmltex and jadetex removed manually

Then the reporter says everything is fine.

Debian TeX maintainers, do you see any obvious problem with this upgrade
path? And do you want to investigate more (I understand very well if
you don't)?

Thanks,
Ming

[Bug 103482] Re: [can-not-install] postrm failure

2007-07-11 Thread Ming Hua
I am not convince this is an r-base-core bug.

So when r-base-core upgrades from 2.2.x to 2.4.x, the
/usr/lib/R/etc/ldpaths file is moved to /etc/R/ldpaths, and a symlink is
created. Yet somehow when r-cran-psy is upgraded, it can't find the
/usr/lib/R/etc/ldpaths file.

Shouldn't r-cran-psy Depends/Pre-Depends r-base-core (>= 2.4.0) then?

Dapper has 0.70-1, so this bug is still relevant. Whether it can be
fixed in gutsy or must be fixed in feisty-updates/dapper-updates, I
haven't investigated yet.
