[Bug 774978] Re: xserver crashes in RecordAReply when XRecord is enabled in syndaemon

2016-02-29 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
hi there,
we are in 2016 and the bug is still here
got this bug with Chrome, Firefox closing tabs ( in Mint 17.3 ), even with
Font Manager
I use a Radeon hd 5570 graphic card - 4gb RAM - Intel Quad Core Duo cpu.

on another machine running on 60bit architecture using the same desktop
configuration (but i7 cpu) I can't replicate this bug - can be this problem
related only for 32bit architecture ?

[Bug 602809] Re: add Mouse Click Debounce Feature?

2015-12-11 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
this is true
got an RAT7 (Mad Catz)
and right click sometime give 2 or 3 click events

a lot of peoples(and I really mean A LOT) using expensive devices (mice)
are deep into this problem

fundamentally incredible is the fact that all guru's talk about bad
hardware on the linux side, leaving the problem unsolved - on windows
they all use the same trick for all devices (using autohotkey).

spending many hours over the internet to find a linux easy solution, I found
that the ultimate solution is to patch the evdev driver.
how many peoples will rebuild evdev is my question ? - very few is my response
- people use Ubuntu / Mint for ease of use - geeks use Arch < those guys know
what to do but many Ubuntu users will leave the problem unsolved .. therefore
please add this patch into evdev mainline.

Thanks in advance ...

Re: [Bug 1316197] Re: cant compile version from SVN

2014-05-05 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin

This bug can be closed as invalid.

It is not a bug.

This version is not in the repositories yet.

It is not even a released version...

---

I can agree with that
but
can we get a solution for a working Font Manager ?
this is a must for designers and your Font Manager is ...as far as I've
tested, the best of breed.

I don't really know why distributions (I mean big names here) won't
sustain(financially or with manpower) such project which is a 'sine qua
non' for the linux ecosystem

on my view this project has the same relevance as Cairo or Pango ...

the problem with the version from Saucy repository is that for a fresh
linux install it works - once you put some fonts inside Font Manager crash
after loading the main ui ...

until the next version will come (at least for Ubuntu's row) can we get
some tips or how-to's about how to make it work again ? - this would be
gold

today It was ok - on my fonts folder were about 150 fonts
using Font Manager (file-manager from Saucy repository) I've installed some
more fonts from another folder - then at the next start File Manager
Crashed

this is what I get :

font-manager --version

=== a tip about how to fix this would be gold for many linux based
designers ..

thanks in advance for any help - and thank you and Alessio for keeping the
project alive

This bug was reported against a version which is not supported any more.
Developers are no longer working on this version so there will not be any bug

Can you please check again if the issue you reported here still happens in a

Again thank you for reporting this and sorry that it could not be fixed for

2012-07-04 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
...hmm I was thinking that for GNOME 3 technology they will improve
the toolkit, at least the basic functionality of the window layers ;)
Should be trivial to fix such problem in a windows 32/64 environment
but seems that is impossible with GNU tools ;)
now I'm really curios if EOG developers can fix this long standing
bug, which really make me to stop using EOG.

[Bug 446566] Re: Compiz not starting automatically on login

2011-05-29 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
I will subscribe to this bug for Natty - Ubuntu Classic

everything work ok after compiz --replace but then it will be no window
decorator - so also I have to use fusion icon OR displex indicator to
specify metacity as window decorator.

- still don't know why the visual effects functionality is dropped out
from Appearance Window - we suppose that any superior Ubuntu version
will act as an evolution not as an involution as in this case.

- I think is not a good policy to trow everything on Unity and to let
out other (big) user-base wishes ..and I mean Ubuntu Classic lovers.
They are still a majority ..at least Unity usability problems will be
fixed.

This is not good for marketing - please fix this that button and please keep
with the large user base not with minority.
I hope it will not be the case of too much critical thinking or too much
debates for just put that functionality back - Visual Effects - on the same
place on Appearance Window.
Ubuntu Classic will still stand long time after 11.4 ..peoples don't switch
to Unity just because ..they need good reasons and time for accommodation.

Thanks for listening

Re: [Bug 537262] Re: plymouth pid missing from OMITPIDS and terminated by sendsigs - PLEASE NO MORE CONFIRMATIONS/COMMENTS

2010-03-19 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
man - you have to understand - they report to developers after each
Plymouth upgrade because developers need feedback - also there is an
automated crash report tool.
if developers don't need this information again then they can update
crash reporting tool to be insensitive to this err. message.

Is simple - Developers don't need advocates for what they know better.

2010/3/19 MaskedDriver brifrey...@gmail.com:
Listen, people. The devs know there is a problem. It is set for High
Priority, and is due to be fixed by Beta2. Please stop yep me tooing
on here please. They'll fix it. Stay calm. Take a deep breath, and just
 wait. No more comments.

[Bug 417462] Re: Jockey-gtk is throwing up a box saying you are not authorised to perform this action

2009-11-24 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
It's not fixed in Karmic ..I installed Karmic today and Jokey trow me :
You are not authorized to perform this action.

On other computers with the same video card as mine it's working. I have
ATI Radeon 2600 HD.

Jokey and Network Manager in combination with Policykit are the the
second enemy of Ubuntu right now on my humble opinion.

...and I speak from the ground, I'm an active Ubuntu evangelist I
install Ubuntu on a daily basis - as far as I see the ATI drivers
problem seems to be gone - but policykit + printer drivers + Network
Manager (DSL in special) and sometime + Jokey ..they are the most
frequently problem.

Hope to see a global solution soon for Policykit - Ubuntu need to
progress in order to reach audience, and also in order to keep peoples
who spent a lot of time on promoting Ubuntu.

[Bug 269010] Re: nm-system-settings crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2009-08-08 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Until 7 August ..all OK with my network.
Then after upgrade - network Manager won't work at all ( upgrade was for Karmic
- on 7/8 August )

my connection is DSL - so, fortunatelly I can connect using pppoeconf
utility.

But the point is ..network manager is unusable and this is bad. This
kind of problems should be history now..

For example I use Karmic Koala now and this bug is alive again.

What should I do to repair my problem ?

..my Apport submit this bug - maybe is useful to see the command line
responses ..

from my side ..that problem is gone. I forgot about it from ..7.10 I

The bug just dissappeared for me at some point... I had all forgotten
 about this!

Nothing special about my installation... If I remember correctly, I was
using 7.10 alpha version. At least the locale was Finnish UTF-8. I
remember seeing the bug even when using the live CD, and after
installation and updates of that time, too. I silently blame the early
 alphas for the bug.

I wish I had time to grab the 7.10 CD and put it to test... Mabye later
 this week...

Re: [Bug 253076] Re: No X with current kernel (downgrade fixes it)

2008-10-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
UPDATE - Problem Solved.

I put the radeonhd video driver and voila ..it works.

But the problem is ..in the court of update-manager === Update Manager
must know to choose the right driver - Else, thousand of complains will put
the internet optical fiber on fire around the globe right in the first day
after Ibex launch ( I think the this situation is specific for all HD Radeon
Cards ).

I have an Radeon HD 2600 Pro with 512Mb RAM - so the Update Manager must
know in some way to put the right video driver automatically.

So no downgrade on my case - just the right driver.

[Bug 258381] Re: Blank screen when using usplash and kernel = 2.6.25

2008-10-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
UPDATE - Problem Solved ( at least for me )...

I put radeonhd video driver instead of Update-Manager chosen driver.
It works.

But the problem is still HOT because the Update-Manager ( during upgrade
process ) don't recognize my RadeonHD so he chose for me a wrong driver
then the blank screen and the rest

If this will be not solved ...a lot of Ubuntu Hardy machines (with
RadeonHD) ..upgrading to Ibex will have the same problem.

Re: [Bug 46520] Re: Grub installs to wrong drive's MBR in default install. No way to change in standard installer.

2008-10-10 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
it's merely a problem regarding - next upgrade always do some regressions
where is supposed to be plain ground and clean states - I mean is so hard to
quantify every good step forward ( then the next step to be a real progress
) - instead of reinventing the wheel each time ? following development of
Ubuntu for few years I have the bad impression that every step is reinvented
( ? MS money here ?? ).

So we have now better kernels ( better drivers ), tabs on Nautilus but I
can't set my video card to put 75 / 85 Mhz on my screen not 60Mhz - amximum
for now ( I can do that in 7.10 ), and STILL I can't clearly know where the
Grub will stay.

Also we see no measure is taken agains Grub default instalation AND Grub
User Experience ( is so hard to detect hard drives and to make a noob
friendly - step by step ( explanations... ) guide ), no problem I'll
do a Blueprint for that. I'll make this problem public on forums and blogs.
Maybe someone will see that and help us to help Ubuntu to become human
friendly.

Sorry devs.( if some dev. read this ) but as a friend of Ubuntu I think that
something serious is to be done - to broke a glass on this case. Like your
dutty - but not for money, I work for Ubuntu too. I install desktops for my
friends and their friends all for free ( ...time here ), I recomend - and
install servers sometime ( as in the city-hall of Nasaud - Romania ), and In
general I do my own war with local zealots from PC shops, magazines.

[Bug 253076] Re: No X with current kernel (downgrade fixes it)

2008-10-10 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
I have 2.6.27 - problem is still here

I do an upgrade from Hardy to Ibex 2 days ago
everything goes fine ...but after the splash for boot loader was gone the black
screen step up and won't die.

Please see my last comment on
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/258381 -
xserver errors attached.

So I do a lot of 'tricks' to get back my Gnome but no any chance (
recovery mode, xfix ..etc ).

Yesterday I do an upgrade from CLI, (some 38 packages was on the
upgrade list) and today I observed I can't use Ctrl + Alt + F2 to get my
CLI interface. A blank screen with an clipping cursor is all I got.

The single place where I can give commands to Ubuntu now is the root
console (recovery mode).

My machine : Intel CoreDuo 2 (6mb internal cache), Gygabyte Chipset, PCI
Expres X16, ATI RADEON HD 2600 Pro 512Mb RAM, 2GB RAM memory.

the question is if I can recover my installation without reinstalling
Ubuntu from CD ( I have a lot of usable things on /opt - htdocs for
example - but I don't have enough space to copy for save all my needed
stuff - I can start apache and and I can dump out my databases but
there are a lot of other things and too little space so save them all -
I know it's a beta software but I can't imagine I can't start Ubuntu in
a way or other... ).

Any help appreciated.

Re: [Bug 46520] Re: Grub installs to wrong drive's MBR in default install. No way to change in standard installer.

2008-10-09 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
well seems to be chronic ...

2008/10/9 Doug Wright [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have confirmed that the same behaviour is seen in Intrepid (20081009 /
AMD64 Server). My workstation has the following hardware -- which
differs in chipset than the original with the disks listed in physical
 order:

 MB: Abit KV8Pro

 PATA1: 1x 80GB and 1x 120GB disks
 PATA2: 1x DVD drive
 SATA: 2x 120GB disks

I have attached the output of some commands (uname, lspci, dmesg, fdisk)
from Intrepid, as well as from Gentoo and GParted Live for comparison.
It seems that in Ubuntu, Grub is seeing the correct order for the disks,
but the order the the kernel provides to it during the install is
incorrect. This probably only affects systems that have integrated PATA
and SATA controllers provided by a single chip with both types being
 used.

My guess is that Ubuntu is the only one (of theses three atleast) that
is solely relying on the new 'libata' module. The others still have
 /proc/ide populated.

Let me know if there is any thing else I can provide for you.

hmm - just upgraded from Hardy to Ibex - upgrade OK - after reboot - just a

attached my .xsession log.

dpkg tell me all ok, `xfix` can not do anything, xorg.conf is 'dpkg-

I have 2.6.27-6 generic kernel

some directions from here ??

Re: [Bug 46520] Re: Grub installs to wrong drive's MBR in default install. No way to change in standard installer.

2008-09-14 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Sam - to ensure - I will never get into this situation ( yep I was in your
situation too - my Ubuntu install wrote on MBR over XP loader - so I can't
boot any OS ).

If you have XP - U can recover XP boot with a bootable win98 floppy with :
fixmbr command afer the floppy boot is complete OR from your Windows CD (
details here :
http://amazingrando.wordpress.com/2007/04/05/fixmbr-is-your-friend/ )

on the linux side :
I'm afraid you have to reinstall Ubuntu from an Ubuntu Hardy CD

if you want to protect your data on linux partitions for further troubles -
do partitions as I do - a boot partition ( first ), a swap partition (
second ), a root partition ( third ), and finally a home partition.

so you need to mark them at the manual partitioning phase, like that:
1 = /boot
2 = /swap
3 = /root
4 = /home

my /boot has 500mb
my /swap has 2000mb
my /root has 65% from rest of space
my /home has 35% from rest of space

if you have doal boot - U have to put Grub over XP loader where XP is
installed ( on the partition where XP is located ). Grub will recognize XP
loader and will offer you as a boot option.

Also if you have a /home partition your data is safe ...even if your linux
is gone - you can install other linux and after boot your data will be there
...

2008/9/14 Sam Brightman [EMAIL PROTECTED]

As I said above, upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy left me with a machine
 that would not boot.

nope
HARDY is OK - For me - but this is not a general rule - I'm not the
comparison element, so the this bug should be investigated because seem to
be critical

Morgan - the point is that an kernel upgrade ( so an Ubuntu upgrade ) will
rewrite your boot menu, even is customized - your problem can be from
menu.lst too ( but sure ..can be from the wrong MBR location as you suggest
here )

My menu.lst was customized but an recent upgrade rewrite my menu.lst so for
next boot I can't see my XP installation on grub list so I need to repair my
menu.lst by hand. This is a potential bug too - because on the upgrade

Help. I'm writing in from Ohio, in the United States.

I recently attended a cookout with an Acer Aspire One with Ubuntu by my
side. When asked what it was, I said it was a notebook with Ubuntu,
which is a type of Linux, which is an operating system. The general
reply was that their computers ran Dell operating systems.

Please send men in Human-themed suits to aid these poor people who
didn't even realize that there were other options beside Windows (honest
 - they thought Mac's were just Windows boxes with prettier cases.)

Please... I don't know how much longer I can last with my efficient

Re: [Bug 203317] Re: gnome-panel needs a nice background image

2008-03-23 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
U right,
mine is a quck dirty. Generally we need a better solution with some
more options regarding theme applied to WM and gnome-panel - today
situation is more like a very quick solution [ to choose a file than
set as BG for Gnome Panel - it can be a transparent PNG indeed ], we
need something integrated with Themes Preferences, so the BG
transparency could be set in some kind of individual mode - shared from
Compiz OR from Metacity - depend on your WM engine.

xl_cheese wrote:

I noticed in the Gnome 2.24 objectives is to include themeing of the
panel which I assume becomes part of the gtk engine and gtkrc.

[Bug 201966] Re: Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9b3 and 1.9b3.

2008-03-13 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 201938 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201938

This false bug is because xulrunner and firefox has not the same version
on your upgrade time. So you upgrade when on repos was only xulruner
present. After firefox come in repos too - after upgrade all works
again.

Solution1 : wait for new firefox on repos.
Solution2 : search for firefox 3 beta 4 on they site - download - extract it on
a folder under your home dir. For example on ~/firefox, then make a link from
firefox file inside the folder to Desktop.

This will not break, any previous Firefox instalation. Ucan keep this
solution until new Firefox === with Xullruner version will touch the
repos. Then you delete ~/firefox OR U can keep it for other problems
like that.

The big solution - to avoid unnecessary reports - will be to put those
packages on repos when they are ready - not one now and other after 5
hours, OR to hide xulrunner until firefox is ready too.

by far, dcherryholmes - is not a FGLRX problem.

is a Compiz Problem. Paths are wrong. So take a look in /usr/bin/compiz
( sudo gedit /usr/lib/compiz )

at first block, You will see :

COMPIZ_BIN_PATH=/usr/local/bin/ # For window decorators and compiz
PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/local/lib/compiz/
GLXINFO=/usr/bin/glxinfo
KWIN=/usr/bin/kwin
METACITY=/usr/bin/metacity
COMPIZ_NAME=compiz # Final name for compiz (compiz.real)

The correct Block must be contain the correct paths ( without word
'local' and in the last row, compiz is compiz.real):

COMPIZ_BIN_PATH=/usr/bin/ # For window decorators and compiz

GLXINFO=/usr/bin/glxinfo
KWIN=/usr/bin/kwin
METACITY=/usr/bin/metacity

Down there ( somewhere around line 58 ), you must have this block :

# blacklist based on the pci ids

2008-03-04 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Ok Duncan, first is not my text - it's the proposal that bug report tool
offer me.

I think was OK on his way.

Second - It's about a Metabug ( yes ...which is also in package
***... is a metabug which require a final resolution, I'll speak about
that later on this mail), so I'm not reporting about my problem. I'm not
asking for help ...regarding your solution, I can do that without fill
in bug reports - but this is not the proper solution. Imagine mr. Duncan
you tell that to a beginner - he will ask you beck probably what is
...kernel.

So my report is there in hope is be useful for something.

Now about the metabug - is present from first Ubuntu.

Maybe a packager does something wrong.

But is not OK for peoples to see this bug too often.

And this is happening almost each week for a package or 2. Is not an
Open Office error.

Is a decision to take = so if the same package is there = we should
interrupt the upgrade process ? - what if our program take count on the
library presence and continue upgrade process ( if is THE SAME library
what's the real problem ? - do not copy the file but give to installer
option TRUE when he check paths and libraries - so the upgrade process
can continue). OR if is the same file - OVERWRITE THE FILE and GO ON (
you can check the file version using checksum, numbering system, file
length, etc ) - BUT NOT BROKE A PROCESS BECAUSE ONE OF THE NECESSARY
FILES IS ALREADY THERE.

This is my message and please take count on that.

About the specific part of the bug - I can delete the file from it's
location and from dpkg index so after that Upgrade will work OK - no
necessary to upgrade my kernel ( which may work or not ...).

Regards,
Sorin

2008-03-04 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
ok Steve,

U tell us ...Silently overwriting files is not a sound practice,
because the files are almost always not the same, so overwriting them
would make for even worse bugs.

I agree is not a good practice to silently kill non convenient output
-but- and is a BIG but which in many cases is not considered .. is to
obvious, let's talk a bit about this bug on the last 2 months ... in 99%
of last cases ( as on my experience ) was the same file name and version.

If you read carefully what I wrote there about file control ( there are
few methods - including parsing file content [as brute force] ) you can
realize that must be not so hard to find a method to see if is the same
file with the same content - OR not.

Now - if is the same file - the same content - I don't see the reason to
not overwrite.

So I not recommend that as a best practice - but if we have an evidence
- why we should stuck on the problem instead of going forward.

Now the second point. If is not the same file - User can choose what to
do. OR if we don't consider here so smart users - then a rule (or more)
must be defined ( regarding the same filename = to keep the bigger
version / to keep the larger file / or some... ).

Enfin - this can be good for both parts - for the distro and for the
independent programmer. If you made a program distributed by others you
will enjoy idea to put a RULE file on your package - that can be
interpreted by the mister Update Manager - to see what he can do in
any case. It's about a simple file where - case 1 - do that, case 2 -
overwrite, case 3 - delete older file put the newest, case 4 - phone
home ...etc.

That's the point - not to ignore this bug ( is too often repeated,
search bug reports from the last 2 years ...). So please consider a
possible solution eventually ONLY for the case where we have SAME
VERSION - SAME NAME - SAME CONTENT ( generally python scripts from
different sources put the same files in site).

An we just walk forward a bit.

..On my opinion of course.

Anyway, that's my message - from time to time is good to go somewhere
on a higher point to see what's here down - just to not forget the big
picture.

 Folks,

This bug is not about kernel issues, and it's been fixed in hardy.
Please try to upgrade to the most recent version of the affected

you are still having problems upgrading the named package.

Sorin, you are mistaken about this not being an OpenOffice.org bug. It
is; the packaging system's behavior when two packages have conflicting
files is not spurious, it is a carefully considered design decision
which is crucial to the reliability of the running system. File
overlaps unfortunately do happen from time to time in development
releases, but these are always bugs in the packages in question that
need to be resolved before we release - and we have a report that helps
us identify file conflicts so we can do exactly that. Silently
overwriting files is not a sound practice, because the files are almost
always not the same, so overwriting them would make for even worse bugs.

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-03-02 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
In addition to Mark...

Well it was a time when I was tired by reporting bugs and receiving back
messages like - your report has multiple keypoints inside - please make
a detailed report for each one and send him to the corresponding team ...

Pretty annoying yeah ? - maybe 5 from 100 will follow the recommended
way.

Because I don't like to renounce, In I tried to adapt to their
(imperfect in my mind) model and guess what.

We adapt both. Yes - in time I learn Linux (becoming a linux geek) and
they learn from their inevitable(for a new baby born)
mistakes(communicational + other nature).

So I can see the empathy working here - they work hard to adapt and
improve communication with users ( bug reporting, patching, wish lists,
etc ) - and we realize that the things are in change pretty fast, and we
are a part of this process. My tired face is not automatically set from
now one when I see a problem - instead I know if I report that problem -
if is a true problem - they will solve that as soon as they can.

Now Ubuntu is a Linux territory where the battle for the future of
computing is on it's big fires. Bugs, flame wars, frustrations,
brilliant but unseen ideas - all are here (it's a place where Natural
Selection Live) and is normal for an concept who want to change in
better a part of this world.

After my first steps I understand they know about imperfections - but
any problem has it's own time, and things are changing fast here.

For example : I prepared some screen shoots and some txt files to report
2 nasty bugs form me ( after each login - a pop up with language EN_US
did not exist ... and a bug regarding fglrx and impossibility to set a
default screen resolution ..from gconf OR xorg.conf - because always
Ubuntu choose the biggest resolution for me and was nasty ...). Before I
was able to send my reports - after a daily upgrade I see they where fixed.

So mr. Adrian or other like - solution is not to blame or to numbering (
time wasted activities ) - solution is to help if you can OR to wait for
a better future coming in a batter day (hoping until then that a brave
soul will win all nasty battles for you).

About M$ bug - don't forget M$ has over 70.000 employees - and they do
What ?. Innovations ? - ah yes Innovations - they all like to talk about
that(all time if I remember well)- but I'm waiting on the last 100 years
or some too see some really new ...(I think I'm a bit blind here or my
memory lost some RAM, sorry this is my fault) - Better software ?
..please tell me one or 2 pieces. Hardware yes - I read an old Morse
code message talking about M$ hiQ PC components (mouses, keyboards,
audio systems) - and I believe that.

But about software - they never listen final client, simply M$ user -
because - in their vision not the client should make rules for the
future - only M$ rules, M$ standards, world can be a M$ world or can not
be at all...

Or according to my vision - peoples / clients / users must dictate
Software Future not a people or 2, from some dark office.
The first affirmation is the Ubuntu way. Maybe not perfect yet - but
it's an idea that's OK to die for.

I remember I wrote mails / sign petitions few years as a webdesigner to
complain about IE big problems. No M$ ear hear.

When Firefox rise, what we see ? - a Galactic Revolution. All M$ peoples
that can carry a gun( even some womans ..it's a legend now), start to
work on IE 19 / 24 to erase the enemy.

Or this is not a sign of a big, respectable company(and I know what i
say).

I was nothing until Firefox, then automatically M$ hear my voice ...
loud and clear an we become instantly friends - we change our phone
numbers, and we call each other by nicknames (Don' ask me now for Bill
phone nr. - I promise him to keep this number secret [ free only for IE
users ..but their number decrease as the seconds gone ..I don't remember
to see any one here ...from the last week ]).

So in 3 words - I prefer to die on the light side - with all their
imperfections - instead of being a gray slave for a dark master.
Certainly, here I feel I'm in life.

I have bugs - yes, but I have freedom also.
Dark side slaves (still)had bugs, But they had walls around also.

Which is better ?. Think about liberation now ...

Well that said - back to killing / reporting bugs / writing blueprints
/ make wish lists / drink coffee /..and so - cigar pause is over.

;)

he still has his right points.

we advanced in manny points - on other points - we are in the past.

we need to change some structural concepts. Nautilus for example [take a
look at pathFinder on Mac OR to Dolphin on KDE4 to see where the modern
file managers go..]. Gnome simplicity does not mean 'hi integration of
functionalities' ..yet.

[ Also Nautilus take sometime 5-7-8 seconds to open a small folder.
Nautilus open quick a big ntfs partition and slow a desktop folder.]

Gnome in general must offer advanced functionalities - then let user to
choose from - not to offer some 'ready made'layouts by a group which
think for the masses. So gnome must be more, more configurable.

By default Gnome UI design is not 'user driven' but 'Gnome devs.
driven'. there are different functional needs for different groups of
users, we need to give them all - then they choose what they need and
hide the rest.

This is a thinking level that Gnome / Ubuntu / linux in general must
reach in order to touch the normal user (for enterprise level situation
is different).

Also - Printing system - is much better than in the past 2 years but
still not completely integrated into desktop - here are a lot of new
drivers too. On Hardy for example I have 3 icons for print (Gnome
Control Center) - Printing, Printing and Default Printer. This is
confusing for an average user (an XP user for example). Why not a single
icon ( Printers / Faxes / Scanners ) with an UI where user can choose
step by step all things he / she need.

Multimedia. Wrong Players. I use compiz now in my Hardy up to date. The
only player which can play well almost any multimedia file (music or
video) with compiz enabled or not.

Totem the default player is less usable.

Other video player does not work OK with compiz, only MPlayer - until
you do some Pro settings.

But simply users don't know to do those settings. They expect to click
and play.

So I can't understand why the wxVLC is not default video player in
Ubuntu.

Rhythmbox default music player - is poor compared with the death Listen
or with Exaile.

Why no one can see that - and reinvent Listen ?. I use a beta version
0.6 - not on the repos' which work perfect. Why this version is not on
the repositories ?

Screen and Graphics is broken on Hardy, Videocard detection - broken,
language settings are broken, keyboard detection and sound are broken
too, device detection are in someway strange and worst than into Gutsy
(on Gutsy all of these work OK).

A lot of things - now in alpha stage - must be fixed JUST to work as in
Gutsy, until the final release so ...too lite space for new
functionalities / features that will add Ubuntu on the 50% of world
desktops.

I just started a big list of needed changes on structure / UI /
fundamental metaphors / + mockups.

Finally I am curious if this huge effort will count somewhere in the
devel land.

..we will see, anyway I keep the fight but I have a moderate opinion,
because a lot of things are ...just not OK.

it's time to make a review if anything has changed regarding this bug.

To draw a resume: Ubuntu has nothing achived in this last year.

I guess you see what you want to see... I am sure my perception is
slightly biased as well, but I still have some points to counter.

 1) Have you tried printing lately? With Gutsy, cups made a huge gain.
Now most HP and Xerox printers are auto-detected, even on the LAN, and
installed with no searching. See me do thins with my laptop has
prompted a few Wins at client sites with me saying nothing.

 2) If your screen is ugly, you have a problem. My screen looks better
than most Windows screens, and fonts render correctly in everything.
No, nothing has been compiled. This is all with packages in repositories.

 3) This year I have been able to engage business to a level I never have
before, in considering Linux desktops for non-technical users. I have
several Proof of Concepts out that should convert into roll-outs. And I
have been selling Ubuntu Guest PCs quite well for some time now.

 4) Drivers have changed quite a bit as well. Along with the CUPS stuff
above, nVidia drivers are auto-detected, and installed by clicking a
bubble that pops up. Several NICs work this way too. Trying to view a
file without a codec prompts you on what codec to install and how.

Now this has not yet translated to a 50% market share, but it has made
the platform much more viable for people that don't care about
computers. And showing how easy my life is without Windows is the best
advertising. Do you know how impressive it is to print out my invoice
at the client site on their printer without looking for a disk or asking

2008-02-06 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
As in many other situation you can right click on the music file and -
play with [ ... list ... players ] / or Add to [ ... player ...]
playlist

Ideally is to set default actions for any file from something like
Preferred Applications like - ON CLICK = play in Listen/Exaile/etc.. ON
DOUBLECLICK = Enqueue on Listen/Exaile/etc ...ON MOUSEOVER = Preview
audio / video[on a miniwindow] ON RIGHTCLICK = Show contextual menu
... ETC.

This way once all actions can be set for entire system ...all OK. No time or
nerves wasted.
You install a new player ? - no problem - go to update filetype actions.

This must be - something very general - system wide - that can set
filetype options for a lot of circumstances(not just open with). User
driven process. Not every new installed app. automatically register
itself as default.

Set and forget.

It it not an dist-upgrade is a simple upgrade.

I consider this one a metabug - because is present since Ubuntu 6 ( then
I saw him first time ).

Now it's here in Hardy. And it's a showstopper bug. A non geek can not
deal with. And stop. That's why I consider this one as a META bug.

Also is not a specific for a specific software package - I meet this bug
on a lot of upgrades - here is about how Update Manager can deal with a
duplicate file which try to overwrite an existing file. Overwrite or Not

[Bug 182408] package libflickrnet2.1.5-cil 25277-5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-01-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Public bug reported:

I have to report this bug - knowing that it was already reported because
I am not sure (there is not a way to be sure that my collected data
about this bug will be added to an earlier report ... ) that my traces
will come here on other way.

so my fundamental question is not about 'this' particular bug - but
about its expansion in space and time - someone must kill this
'overwrite problem' forever somewhere on the main code - not just
patches for particularly packages - I mean there must be a way / a
decision which can properly fix this problem. Else I fee the progress
will be slow, very slow, this bug is here from ancient times.

Too much deja vu - so I'm asking you to send this message to
decisional power (regarding Ubuntu development) and to sustain this
point on benefit of all.

Thank you.

[Bug 180409] Re: bugs in fglrx - blank screen - artifacts

2008-01-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
A new Day - A new Experience - I manually installed ATI fglrx driver
from AMD website - I mean ati-driver-installer-8.443.1-x86.x86_64
because I don't need the artifacts on my screen from fglrx coming from
Hardy repositories (this is a known problem - no fglrx from repo' - no
artifacts - and I still wondering on that). Please see my attachments
with screenshoots.

The problem is when Ubuntu must do an upgrade. Update-manager see
8.443.1-1 lower than 1:7.1.0-7-11+2.6.24.4(from repo).

So my Ubuntu want to upgrade to a lower version.
Is pretty unbelievable why Synaptic could not see the difference - because of
the numbering system. Please do a numbering conversion patch - because now this
problem hold on place a lot of other upgrades such as Compiz upgrades or other
upgrades related to fglrx packages.

Thank you.
