[Bug 714982] [NEW] Lag kills pulseaudio applications

2011-02-07 Thread Nicholas Coltharp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I'm running 10.10 on a pretty low-power netbook. Often, when I open an
application or do something similarly CPU-intensive, there will be some
lag on media applications that I'm running. In the case of Pulseaudio
applications like Banshee or video chat in Empathy, this lag will often
kill whatever is going on -- for example, my song will stop playing and
Banshee will skip ahead to the next one, or my Empathy video chat will
get disconnected.

I'm not sure if this is due to a bona fide crash in Pulseaudio or
something else, but it's really annoying.

[Bug 341952] Re: ath5k locks up system in jaunty - ath5k phy0: noise floor calibration timeout

2009-05-26 Thread Nicholas Coltharp
I'm having a similar problem.

I'm using an Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI
Express Adapter (rev 01) with the ath5k module. Every now and then, my
system freezes, but I don't know if that's the wireless's fault.
However, it DOES always happen right when I'm trying to connect, so I
think I have reasonable suspicion.

Furthermore, every so often, my ethernet simply refuses to connect. It
will detect the networks, but it won't be able to connect to any of
them, and I get the same messages that you posted. When this happens,
resetting only makes the problem worse: all of the networks become
invisible.

The ONLY way that I have found to fix this problem is to restart, hook
the computer up to a network physically, log in, wait for the network to
connect, and then unplug. Then, for some reason, my network works again.

[Bug 360180] [NEW] Lancelot launcher bugs up if a Favorite is added

[Bug 358918] [NEW] System fails to start

2009-04-10 Thread Nicholas Coltharp
Public bug reported:

Using the Jaunty beta with a Toshiba A135-S2386.

Occasionally--I'd say maybe 1/5 of the time--when I turn my laptop on,
it simply fails to start. It goes through GRUB, usplash, and the init
script--it says that it's starting kdm--and then, after the text is
gone, the screen goes black.

Now, normally, there are little static bars that announce that X is
starting up, and then it takes me to the login screen.

When this bug occurs, the screen simply stays black and nothing happens.
No keys or key combinations induce any reactions.

[Bug 356827] [NEW] Rosegarden does not recognize sox installation

[Bug 308303] Re: Rosegarden should depend on timidity

2009-04-07 Thread Nicholas Coltharp
I have not yet gotten sound working with Rosegarden (it's much more
difficult than Windows counterparts!); however, this is basically
correct.

The only problem is that there are two options.

Timidity is one, and Timidity depends on Freepats, which is a set of
free-licensed soundfonts. Probably the most complete (or only) free
soundfont set, but is still incomplete.

The other option is Fluidsynth. My understanding is that Fluidsynth
CANNOT work with Freepats, and needs non-free, third-party soundfonts,
which can be found on various websites.

So for easy and painless setup, Timidity is probably the best option,
but supposedly would result in a lower quality than Fluidsynth with a
third-party soundfont would.

[Bug 356763] [NEW] Kpilot configuration version lower than stored version

2009-04-06 Thread Nicholas Coltharp
Public bug reported:

Using the Jaunty beta.

Whenever I run kpilot, it writes to the console the mysterious message
KPilot configuration version 520 newer than stored version 0.

Graphically, once I get past the General Setup screen, a screen pops
up that says The configuration file for KPilot is out-of-date. Please
run KPilot to update it. The details section reads:

The configuration file is outdated. The configuration file has version 0,
while KPilot needs version 520. Please run KPilot and check the configuration
carefully to update the file.
Important changes to watch for are: Renamed conduits, Kroupware and file
installer have been made conduits as well. Conflict resolution is now a global
setting. Changed format of no-backup databases. Calendar, ToDo, and Contacts
conduits are now using KDE4's Akonadi server and require valid Akonadi
resources to sync.

The error makes no sense to me, since I _am_ running KPilot.

[Bug 342418] [NEW] KNetworkManager won't connect automatically

2009-03-13 Thread Nicholas Coltharp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

Working on a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.10. I can connect to my home
network, but KNetworkManager won't connect automatically when I start
up. It's not a huge thing, but it's an annoyance--especially for apps
like the Weather Plasmoid, which by default checks the forecast every 30
minutes, and won't display anything at all if the network doesn't
connect as soon as I log in. In GNOME, it would automatically connect to

[Bug 331388] [NEW] System freezes randomly

2009-02-18 Thread Nicholas Coltharp
Public bug reported:

Running Intrepid on a Dell Dimension 8400.

Just like the title, my system has been locking up completely randomly
but frequently. It has already happened about five times tonight. When
it freezes, my mouse is still responsive, but nothing else. Ctrl-Alt-
Backspace does not work. It requires a hard reset.

It began happening after I installed Kubuntu. I thought that KDE might
be the reason, so I switched back to GNOME. But it keeps happening here,
too.

Every time the error occurs, kern.log logs this:

Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason [xx] on CPU0.
You have some hardware problem, likely on the PCI bus.
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue

I put [xx] there because I have different codes--b1 most recently, but
last time, it was a1, and a0 before that.

Can anyone help? This is a huge problem, especially because my laptop's
BIOS decided to go berserk just two days ago.

[Bug 310512] [NEW] linux-rt does not support Atheros wireless

2008-12-21 Thread Nicholas Coltharp
Public bug reported:

Hi, running a Toshiba Satellite A135 with Intrepid.

I downloaded the linux-rt kernel in order to get support for Rosegarden,
which requires a higher system timer resolution than the vanilla kernel
gives. However, when I restarted and booted up with the rt kernel, it
didn't detect my network at all.

For wireless networking, lspci gives:

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x
802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

09:06.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

It's pretty essential that I have use of the Internet (especially
because Rosegarden _still_ won't play sound), so does anyone know why
this might not work? I don't _think_ it has anything to do with the
restricted modules, because the Hardware Manager lists my wireless
driver (Support for Atheros 802.11 wireless LAN cards) as free.
