[Bug 1968368] [NEW] System sets my output device to my microphone

2022-04-08 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

When I plug in my Samson Go Mic microphone, Ubuntu sets my Output Device
to "Speakers -- GoMic compact condenser mic," and I can no longer hear
any sound.

I can manually switch to "Speakers Built-in Audio," and then all is
fine. But the setting will not be sticky. After I unplug the microphone,
the Output Device will again switch to the microphone.

What I expected: When I plug in my microphone, Ubuntu should not change
my Output Device, and sound output should continue as usual. And if I do
have to change the setting manually, the change should stick.

The issue is discussed here:
https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/18-04-my-output-device-is-set-to-my-microphone/16613

Using pavucontrol to make the changed setting sticky, as suggested
there, seems to work for me. But this is a workaround.

may not be working consistently. But I haven't done a careful test.

[Bug 1944576] [NEW] Copy/paste still fails in LibreOffice

2021-09-22 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

I am still running into the bug reported in Bug #1879968:

"In Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 there was a bug that caused copy and paste
operations to fail pretty often: the text that was pasted was not the
text that was just copied. See the long discussion at bug #1852183. The
bug was recently marked closed, since the package mutter -
3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 landed in focal-updates and makes the bug occur
much less frequently.

"Unfortunately the bug still exists, and is not difficult to reproduce."

For me the bug still exists: "Copy" in LibreOffice Writer now fails
invariably.

Using Ubuntu 20.04, I have four possible ways to log in:

  1. Wayland
  2. Ubuntu
  3. Gnome (vanilla Gnome session, using Wayland)
  4. Gnome on Xorg

The bug occurs in all four.

The bug occurs whether I use CTRL-C or use "Edit --> Copy" from the
LibreOffice menu.

("Paste," by the way, is not a problem. I can paste whatever is in the
clipboard. The problem lies with "Copy.")

I am not able to say whether the fault lies with Mutter, with
LibreOffice, with both, or with something else.

[Bug 1025388] Re: Internal mic stops working when plugging in headphones

2020-10-22 Thread O Gopal
For a fix that worked for me, see
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1218136/internal-microphone-doesnt-work-
when-using-headphones/1285982#1285982.

The fix:

 1. Run

  sudo apt install alsa-tools-gui

  hdajackretask

 2. Select the appropriate sound card up top in Select a codec.

 3. Then make the Black Mic (headphone jack) override Not connected.

 4. Lower right corner, select Install boot override.

 5. Then reboot and test.

[Bug 1889991] Re: Highlight for the task switcher is too subtle

2020-10-20 Thread O Gopal
I'm sure the highlight *is* perfectly visible, perhaps for a vast
majority of users. But not for me. (And I doubt I'm alone.)

I agree that orange would be jarring. For me the highlight in previous
versions worked perfectly well.

Is there a workaround, an easy way an individual user can override the
change and restore the highlight to what it was? (I've tried switching
themes, but that doesn't seem to affect the highlight.)

This change has been ported upstream. Does that mean that upstream has
accepted it?

I appreciate the efforts of your design team to provide the best
experience for the majority of Ubuntu users. But at the end of the day,
I need something that works for me.

Yes, if you can find a solution in a previous design, I would be most
grateful.

Thank you.

Cordially,
O Govinda

Thank you for responding.

This is certainly a dupe of bug 1869008. I don't know how to check the
version number. I tried 'dpkg -s ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu' but got the
message that such a package is not installed. I haven't seen any other
places listing Thunderbird as supported.

[Bug 1859160] Re: Snapd fails to delete obsolete dev-loops, thus causing delay at lockscreen

2020-01-14 Thread O Gopal
Here you go, Zygmunt.

These are the outputs of losetup and "system-analyze blame" before and
after deleting "dev/loop10."

It appears that after the deletion the deleted item reappears as
"dev/loop20."

Over the course of a couple of days, my logins from the lockscreen have
slowed again. I don't have the technical background to know what's going
on, but - - - here's the output.

[Bug 1859160] [NEW] Snapd fails to delete obsolete dev-loops, thus causing delay at lockscreen

2020-01-10 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

It appears that when installing new versions of software, snapd fails to delete
the dev-loops for older versions.

With Ubuntu 18.04 running on an X-1 Carbon Thinkpad (5th Generation)
with an SSD, my logins after the screen locked became slow. There would
be a delay of maybe 10 to 15 seconds before the login would complete. So
I updated to 19.10. Same story.

Running "systemd-analyze blame," I saw a lot of time-using entries for
"dev-loop[number]."

Running "losetup-a," I was able to see that some of the loops pertained
to obsolete versions of software, especially prior versions of gnome.

After I used "losetup -d" to delete such loops, my logins are quick
again.

>From what I've read online, it seems that snapd fails to delete such old
loops and this is what causes the delay.

What I expected:
My login would be practically instant.

What happened:
My login took 10 to 15 seconds.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:
The problem occurred consistently, with every login from the lockscreen. When I
first installed 18.04 this did not occur.

By the way, when I tried to report this issue using Apport ("ubuntu-bug
snapd"), I received the message "The problem cannot be reported. This is
not an official Ubuntu package."

[Bug 1633922] [NEW] Chosen input source not persistent with IBus and m17n

2016-10-16 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

I am using two input sources: English and sa-IAST (m17n) (which is used
for transliterated Sanskrit).

In my experience, the input source sa-IAST doesn't remain persistent, or
"sticky," between applications, and it won't automatically start in an
application either.

For example:

If I am in gedit and my language is set to English, I can use the app
indicator to change to sa-IAST, and the input source will work as
expected. But if I then switch to LibreOffice Writer, the app-indicator
will still indicate sa-IAST, but sa-IAST will no longer work. Only if I
switch back to English and then use the app indicator to switch back to
sa-IAST does sa-IAST again work.

And regardless of which application I'm in, if my input source is set to
sa-IAST the application ignores it. Only after I switch to English and
then use the app indicator to switch back to sa-IAST does the
application "get it."

Unlike switching to sa-IAST using the app indicator, using a key
combination (like alt-space) to switch to sa-IAST doesn't activate the
sa-IAST input source. When I use the key combination, the language
displayed by the app indicator changes, but the behavior of the keyboard
doesn't.

Just for a test, I installed "Hindi (phonetic (m17n)) (IBus)." I saw the
same behavior pattern for this input source as well.

As another test, I installed "Hindi (Bolnagri)," and it works fine.

[Bug 1345671] [NEW] Reinstalling Ubuntu wipes out connection info one might have expected preserved

2014-07-20 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

I keep /home on a separate partition.

I upgrade by performing a fresh install.

Expected behavior: My internet connection passwords, like most of my
other settings, will be stored somewhere in /home and so will be
preserved.

Actual behavior: The passwords are saved in /etc/NetworkManager/system-
connections, so a fresh install wipes them out.

Though I suppose the actual behavior is intended, for the unsuspecting
it can be a trap.

[Bug 993440] Re: No suspend option for critical battery state in power settings UI

2013-10-28 Thread O Gopal
Unless I enable hibernation, when power drops critically low Ubuntu
offers only one option: sudden death. And I don't find that out until
after installation. (More precisely: I find out the first time I reach
the low-power threshold and Ubuntu suddenly just quits.)

And if, then, I'd want hibernation and haven't already made a swap
partition big enough to accommodate it, I now have to monkey with my
partitions.

Not friendly.

I'd like the Suspend option.

[Bug 1096763] [NEW] GoldenDict doesn't consistently take focus

2013-01-06 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

When I come back to GoldenDict from elsewhere, using show main window
from the icon in the Unity panel, the Look up box doesn't consistently
take focus.

To explain:

When I first open GoldenDict, the look up box is in focus. To look up
a word, all I need to do is start typing.

If I then close (but not quit) GoldenDict and then return to it by
clicking show main window from the icon in the Unity panel, the look-
up box will again be in focus. All I need to do is start typing.

But if I close GoldenDict, do something else (like click on a file in
Nautilus), and then return to GoldenDict as before (by clicking show
main window from the icon in the Unity panel), what then? GoldenDict's
main window is shown. Perhaps whatever I last typed into the look-up box
may still be there and greyed out, as if it had focus. But GoldenDict
itself does *not* have focus. Rather, focus seems to remain with the
program used in the interim. So first I have to click somewhere in
GoldenDict's main window, and only then can I type the word I'm seeking.
This is contrary to my expectations.

What I expect:

I expect that when I activate GoldenDict's main window, GoldenDict's
look-up box will have focus, and all I have to do is start typing.

No scenario occurs to me in which this is not what I would expect.

That aside, thank you for this exceedingly useful program.

[Bug 991762] [NEW] The way Skype is labeled makes it needlessly hard to find

2012-04-30 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

In the Software Center, Skype is labeled, in large bold letters, VOIP
and instant messaging client. And beneath that, in smaller roman type:
Skype.

This, I suggest, is backwards. If someone is looking for Skype, that
makes it needlessly hard to find. A sign for a payphone should not read
coin-operated public telecommunications device.

The labeling should be reversed, with Skype big and bold and the
description small and roman.

[Bug 991767] [NEW] Notice of failed download provides no feedback for completed action

2012-04-30 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

Suppose on install you tick the box to include Fluendo and such extras.
And suppose that during the install your net connection breaks and the
extras fail to download. A window will come up--Information available
--telling you of the failure, in several languages. Excellent! And a
button will offer Run this action now.

But after you press the button to run the action, you will receive no
feedback to tell you whether the action has succeeded or not, and the
window will staysopen, with the same message and same option to Run
this action now.

This is confusing.

Expected behavior: Once the action has completed, the user should see a
notice telling him so. And either the original window should close or
else the Run this action button should be greyed out, leaving only the
option Close.

[Bug 991833] [NEW] Notice of action needed seems to provide no way to act

2012-04-30 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

(Note: Any info in attached files here refers to a fresh install, not
the one reported here, which was an attempted upgrade from Oneiric.)

During install:

I exited all programs but neglected to turn off x-screensaver. My fault.
So the install routine, while configuring libc6, opened a window that
said:

---

x-screensaver and x-lockmore must be restarted before upgrading. One or
more instances of xscreensaver or xlockmore have been detected on this
system. Because of incompatible library

   ok

---

But no response seemed possible. Neither escape nor clicking on ok
had any result.

Expected behavior: Either a way to take action should be made clearly
apparent, or the user should be told, in effect, Sorry, nothing you can
do. Start over.

(Also: Perhaps, to protect the installation process from dummies, the
user should be warned in advance to turn off all screensaver programs.)

[Bug 991841] [NEW] Using task switcher seemed to interrupt installation

2012-04-30 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

(Note: attached info refers to a fresh install, not the one reported
here, which was a failed upgrade from Oneiric.)

While upgrading from Oneiric to Precise, I saw a notice of calculated
changes (how many packages would be installed, replaced, etc.) and
advice to close all open programs.

I used alt-tab to see what programs, if any, might be open.

The notice, with its option to continue, then disappeared and never came
back.

The task switcher showed that the upgrade program had two windows. But I
was only able to access one, a small Distribution upgrade window,
showing the progress of the upgrade. But there was no apparent way
forward; no further progress was possible. (I aborted the upgrade.)

Expected behavior: The task switcher should have worked normally, and I
should have been able to continue the install.

[Bug 991852] [NEW] Where are you? is a potentially misleading question

2012-04-30 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

The question Where are you? can elicit the wrong response when the
user is located in a country other than his usual country of residence.

Ubiquity asks Where are you? But the user is not told why the question
is being asked or what the consequences of the answer will be.

The only visual cue on the page is a dominant map, showing a time zone.
A naive user might therefore very well assume that the answer he gives
will determine the time zone to be set for the system. He has no way to
know that in fact it will determine all his localization settings --
currency, date format, spell checking, and so on.

When I installed Precise, I did so from Madrid. And because this wasn't
my first install and I'm American, I lied and answered New York. Then,
after install, I simply adjusted the timezone, and all was fine.

But earlier, on a previous version, while in South Africa, I truthfully
answered Johannesburg. And when I wound up with South African rand as
my currency, a South African spell checker, and so on, I was confused.
New to Ubuntu, I also didn't know how to change the localization
settings. (Language support didn't seem an obvious choice.)
Confusing!

Expected behavior:

A page with a big visual of a time zone and the question Where are
you? will use my answer to set the system's time zone. (And maybe it
will tell me that after installation I can easily change it in such-and-
such place.)

If my input will be used to determine localization settings, I might be
asked Where do you live? I might see a graphic showing signs for
dollars, pounds, rupees, yen, and so on. And perhaps Hello or
Welcome in a smorgasbord of languages. And I might be told Ubuntu
will use your answer to set the defaults for your currency, language,
and other regional settings. After installation you can easily change
these.

In System settings, I might also see Languages and regional settings
rather than Language support, which doesn't adeuqately convey what
settings this option makes available.

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric running-unity staging

** Description changed:

This problem started for me within the last 2 weeks or so (though this
may be related to my traveling in a hot African summer climate).

The most annoying aspect of the behavior is that instead of gracefully
suspending or shutting down, the system just abruptly turns off -- in
  essence, crashes.

I am an ordinary user and cannot provide technical information about
  which packages might be involved.

- Ubuntu version is 11.10 64-bit. All packages are up to date. ThinkPad is
- T420s using integrated graphics (not NVDIA).

[Bug 933453] [NEW] ThinkPad T420s overheats and crashes under 11.10

2012-02-16 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

This problem started for me within the last 2 weeks or so (though this
may be related to my traveling in a hot African summer climate).

The most annoying aspect of the behavior is that instead of gracefully
suspending or shutting down, the system just abruptly turns off -- in
essence, crashes.

I am an ordinary user and cannot provide technical information about
which packages might be involved.

Ubuntu version is 11.10 64-bit. All packages are up to date. ThinkPad is
T420s using integrated graphics (not NVDIA).

[Bug 835951] Re: state of bluetooth should be remembered

2011-12-18 Thread O Gopal
The interface offers no apparent way to make this setting sticky. But it
should, perhaps as an option in the Bluetooth preferences dialogue.

There's a manual fix for this posted at
http://ubuntucomputing.posterous.com/how-to-disable-bluetooth-on-
startup-ubuntu-tw.

But that's a harder way to do what the interface should make easy.

[Bug 903706] [NEW] Setting wrong resize options gives false error message about permissions

2011-12-13 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

On the Resize images dialogue, I want to change the scale. So I type
in a number--say 30. Then I click Resize.

Resulting error message: '[Name].JPG' cannot be resized. Check whether
you have permission to write to this folder.

But the problem has nothing to do with permissions. Rather, though I
wanted to change the Scale options, I didn't click the radio button
for it. So the Select a size option was still selected. *That* was the
actual error. When I reenter the desired percentage and click the
Scale button, all works fine.

So we have a misleading error message.

Additionally (underlying the human error that led to the error message):

Expected behavior: When I enter a new value for Scale, the selected option
will automatically change to Scale.
Actual behavior: It doesn't. The selected option remains Select a size.

And a fine point: Ideally, the value entered in Scale would be sticky
-- that is, the next time this dialogue box appears, it would retain the
last-entered value.

[Bug 901949] [NEW] Screensavers wrongly classed as technical items

2011-12-08 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

Users without advanced technical skills may typically want to install
some sort of screensaver--for example, a photo slideshow. If they search
for screensaver in USC, they will not find any apps for screensavers,
unless they click on Show 39 technical items. Perhaps some of these
items really are technical. Others, however, seem like they are not.

What I expect to happen: Search for screensaver in USC and find screensavers.
What happens: No such apps display unless you click on Show 39 technical
items.

Themes and tweaks would seem a sensible place to find screensavers.

If installing, for example, xscreensaver involves first uninstalling
gnome-screensaver, better to include instructions on how to do this (or
include an automatic option to do it) than to make a commonly desired
item difficult to find by classifying it as a technical item.

[Bug 877927] [NEW] Punctuation grammar errors in ubiquity slideshow

2011-10-19 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

In the first slide, this text:

This version consolidates the Unity desktop interface; a brand new way. . .

Should fix 2 errors by saying:

   . . . interface, a brand-new way. . .

In the Shotwell slide, this text:

Connect a camera or a phone to transfer your photos, then it's easy.
. .

should say:

Connect a camera or a phone to transfer your photos. Then it's easy.
. .

(Fixes a comma splice.)

In the Banshee slide, this text:

With advanced playback options and the Ubuntu One music store built
in, it's simple to queue up the perfect songs

should say:

. . . built in, you can easily queue up the perfect songs

(In the existing text, using it as the subject of the sentence creates
confusion.)

In the slide about getting help, this text:

You'll be sorted in no time.

should be:

You'll be sorted out in no time.

(As far as I know, for this purpose just sorted is contrary to English
idiom. At least to an American ear, it sounds utterly wrong. Sort out
is standard.)

[Bug 762918] Re: Natty Screensaver freezes system after some period of inactivity

2011-06-02 Thread O Gopal
Similar pattern with 11.04 on a ThinkPad x61s. Screensaver sometimes
freezes (using pictures folder). I'm not playing video underneath, so
that doesn't seem related for me.
