2021-11-22 Thread Oli D
Hi everyone,
i followed your thread and
i've the same error as reported above on my Raspberry Pi 4 with ubuntu server
20.04.
Now I can confirm that the above pull request solved the (and my) problem!
I changed the package on my system, applied the patch/fix manual with the
GitHub PullRequest fix and my install worked!!!.
So please merge the GH PR and everything will be fine.

Here's my steps and output:

[Bug 1550779] Re: [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun - Xorg glitches

2018-04-28 Thread Oli
I am running Ubuntu 18.04 since about a month. No problems so far, until i made
an update 2 or 3 days ago. Since then i have the same problem. Messages in
dmesg with underrun, flickering screen etc.
It happens all the time. This happens on my htpc so i am not able to watch TV
longer than 5-10 minutes, then it starts again with flickering.
I also tried that rc6_enable-workaround, did not help.
Any help is appreciated!

[Bug 1552216] Re: Laptop hangs during second time it suspends

2016-03-29 Thread Oli
Sorry, Christopher, I disagree with that assessment of the situation.

This when the Jan said the Live image worked. That isn't an indication
that this is now fixed, it's an indication that the Live image works. It
works for me too. On a technical level, that in itself is a clear
indication this is related to the graphics stack.

This bug is still valid IMO. I'll shut up if Jan says this is fixed for
them now (in a proper install) but otherwise I think this has just been
improperly triaged.

[Bug 1552216] Re: Laptop hangs during second time it suspends

2016-03-29 Thread Oli
I see the same behaviour on a 16.04 desktop with a Nvidia 970.

Before this I was successfully suspending many times per session using
14.04 with a Wily HWE stack so I think that excludes 4.2 from directly
being the problem. I have since disabled timed suspend but if the
monitor has been turned off (via DPMS), first-time manual suspend
fails.

The 16.04 Live image also suspends fine. That uses Nouveau though.

So I think the common factor between us is the proprietary Nvidia driver
and Maxwell (we're on different generations but, still). I've tried
versions 358 and 364 of the driver but both are broken for me on 16.04.

Unfortunately I upgraded to my 970 (from a 580) about the same time I
upgraded to 16.04 so I can't rule out it being just a Maxwell issue.

You get anywhere with this?

[Bug 1550923] Re: 16.04's virtualenv uses Python 3 but python executable is Python 2

2016-02-29 Thread Oli
Sidebar: /usr/bin/python seems to be the implicit default too, even for
this Python3-based version.

Thanks for staying with me in such a calm manner, Barry. I can get on
board with that but I'm still seeing real-world problems with the
outcome. It's probably something unrelated to Python 3. When it comes to
pip+source packages that have to be built it can't do it. I don't know
why. You can repro on a fresh computer:

sudo apt install virtualenv python-virtualenv python-dev mercurial
/usr/bin/virtualenv -p /usr/bin/python2.7 test-venv
./test-venv/bin/pip install
hg+https://bitbucket.org/bittner/django-apptemplates/#egg=django-apptemplates

You'll see a hairy error about "ImportError: No module named
_markerlib". Activating doesn't make any difference. I've had this
problem with quite a few packages now.

If you install python-pip and then run `sudo pip install virtualenv`,
and use /usr/local/bin/virtualenv to create the environment, you can
install everything. The versions of pip used appear to be the same. I'm
honestly unsure what's causing this issue.

[Bug 1550923] Re: 16.04's virtualenv uses Python 3 but python executable is Python 2

2016-02-29 Thread Oli
Oh if it were that easy. `python -m virtualenv` does not work. Python2's
virtualenv couldn't be called as a module.

And that's the problem. I don't disagree with a want to move away from
Python 2, but there are many developers and organisations that are still
managing their upgrades from 2-to-3, who maintain multiple environments
with both versions. I have dozens of virtualenvs on my server.

Changing how a basic tool like virtulenv is packaged (indeed, in
practice it ISN'T packaged for Python 2 now) just annoying. The easiest
fix is `sudo pip install virtualenv` which supplants the whole thing and
means you have to use the full path for the Python3 version.

If you still haven't seen how silly the state of this is, just look at
pip (python-pip, /usr/bin/pip). It's still Python 2!!

So no. You could break all the things, break all the people, or put
things back to how they should be. A wontfix here really only serves to
make Ubuntu (and Debian) worse.

[Bug 1550923] [NEW] 16.04's virtualenv uses Python 3 but python executable is Python 2

2016-02-28 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

So we're drifting into complicated territory.

 - Python 2 is still the default?
 - Package: python-virtualenv is Python2
 - Package: virtualenv is Python 3 and replaces python-virtualenv
 - Therefore you can't install both

The Ubuntu-Python packaging team needs to decide what takes precedence.
Allowing the names to conflict like this is confusing, unneccessary and
a little bit evil.

For the sanity of devops, I would plead that virtualenv remain a Python
2 binary, the "virtualenv" package be thrown into the sun and
python3-virtualenv changes its binary to virtualenv3 (or people use the
module directly like they have forever `python3 -mvenv ...`)

Bug #1503774 is another regression for this. It's missing the pyvenv
scripts and docs that 3.2.0 shipped.

[Bug 1503774] [NEW] SRU version (3.4.3-1ubuntu1~14.04.1) missing pyvenv scripts

2015-10-07 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

pyvenv is a script that 3.4.0 ships. It's just a convenience wrapper and
documentation around `python3 -m venv` but it's still something that
people use.

Removing it mid-LTS is a regression.

Additionally, 3.4.3 seems to be missing the pyvenv script and
documentation that routes through to python -m venv. It's not the end of
the world, but certainly a regression.

[Bug 1500768] Re: python3.4.3 SRU break requests

2015-10-07 Thread Oli
The update and reversion has left people beached on 3.4.3. Apt doesn't
automatically downgrade people back down. They're just orphaned on an
obsolete version.

I understand that this is a WiP and this has been done to stop more
people hitting this issue, but is there a good way to downgrade to the
last version temporarily?

[Bug 1240848] Re: ~/.cache/upstart takes up around 70GB of space due to unity and mediascanner

2014-08-03 Thread Oli
This isn't limited to Unity. Just found my start-kde.log had swollen to
several gigabytes because of a V4L bug that VLC had been spewing out for
several minutes.

Upstart needs to be more clever about repeated messages. syslog can, for
example, munch quick duplicates and say "Line repeated x times"

[Bug 1218641] [NEW] dhclient uses 100% cpu when ipv6 is not igored

2013-08-29 Thread Oli Wade
Public bug reported:

When network manager is set so "automatic" or "automatic (addresses
only)" for ipv6, dhclient is observed to use 100% CPU.

There are no apparent errors in the syslog. Setting ipv6 to "ignore"
solves the problem.

When it is not ignored, ipv6 addressing seems to complete (both dhcp and
sac); when it is ignored only the sac address gets configured.

Typical "top" output without ignoring ipv6:

[Bug 1030643] Re: Complete system freeze

2012-07-30 Thread Oli Gaymond
Hi,

I had a look through the details on the Capturing OOPs page, and had a
look in my kernel log. I wasn't able to find anything useful and I don't
yet have a possible trigger for the crash with which to test. With the
infrequency and without knowing what will trigger the crash, I don't
think I'll be able to do any reliable testing with other kernels.

Feel free to close the bug and if I have it happen again (and can find a
trigger to cause it) I'll re-open it.

Thanks

[Bug 1030643] [NEW] Complete system freeze

2012-07-29 Thread Oli Gaymond
Public bug reported:

System completely froze (no response to input devices, or ssh) and
required a hard reboot.

I was previously affected by an Ivy Bridge graphics bug that also
resulted in a full system freeze, but the trigger for that freeze (GPU
related work) seems to have been fixed with the recent release of Kernel

I filed a bug for this against Chromium.

It's not obvious to me that this is a Chromium bug as I don't remember
the issue occurring with an update in Chrome, but it did coincide with
several Ubuntu updates i.e. perhaps something changed in the underlying
code that Chrome calls.

[Bug 1019914] Re: Audio is skipping every ~1 minute .

2012-07-12 Thread Oli Gaymond
Hi, I'm also affected by this bug. Anecdotally this also appears to be
related to Chrome for me. If I close Chrome, then listening to music is
fine (Spotify). With Chrome open, I get occasional stuttering of the
system audio. Chrome being open affects audio not just from Chrome (e.g.
Youtube) but also other apps like Spotify, even when there should be no
audio coming from Chrome.

Not sure if it's related, but I am occasionally noticing Chrome
'sticking' for a fraction of a second for example when scrolling on a
page. The 'sticking' does not appear to be related to anything specific
on the page, and like the audio appears more like some regular event
being triggered.

I tried filing a separate bug report but after several hours launchpad
timed out 'processing'.

2012-06-10 Thread Oli
Hi all, I created a PPA based on Rock's patch for my bug report
(#974242):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oli/compiz-place-patch
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I was also suffering from this bug and the patch seems to deal with both
problems at once. Give it a test and let me know if you have any
problems.

[Bug 974242] Re: Compiz edge detection code is moving windows against my will

2012-06-08 Thread Oli
Seeing how easy it is to create a PPA, I have just done this:
https://launchpad.net/~oli/+archive/compiz-place-patch

It has built for 32bit Precise but there's a 4-hour wait for 64bit
Precise. When it's ready you can install the PPA and just upgrade to the
package like so:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oli/compiz-place-patch
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I'll try to keep up with the releases as they come in but this should do
for initial testing.

2012-06-07 Thread Oli
Urgh, obviously the line `patch -p1 < ~/Desktop/fix-974242.patch` isn't
supposed to look for your desktop - If you're following my instructions
to the letter, just use `patch -p1 < ../fix-974242.patch` (or fix the
path yourself).

[Bug 974242] Re: Compiz edge detection code is moving windows against my will

2012-06-07 Thread Oli
Just to echo the others: an hour of testing in, and I've nothing but joy
to report. This patch makes Compiz/Gnome-Fallback usable. Things behave
as you would expect: windows aren't jumping all over the place or
getting stuck, and, per the other bug, the panel isn't getting in the
way of fullscreen applications.

@monjurul@88 it's a bit hectic:

sudo apt-get build-dep compiz
sudo apt-get install devscripts
wget
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/974242/+attachment/3141645/+files/fix-974242.patch
apt-get source compiz
cd compiz* # you might want to replace the *
patch -p1 < ~/Desktop/fix-974242.patch
dpkg-source --commit
debuild -us -uc

That should dump a whole collection of debs in `..`. After that just
install the ones you need with `dpkg -i`.

If you're using nvidia (pointedly the xorg-edgers PPA version) you might
have problems compiling things that link to /usr/lib/libGL.so* so I just
moved those files to my desktop, ran the `debuild -us -uc` command again
and after that, moved the libGL files back.

The bigger question is, how do we go about nominating this patch for
immediate inclusion in Ubuntu so people aren't forced to download half a
gig just to compile this in?

Why didn't I think of that?! No, on 3.2.0-23-generic it's also
connecting slowly.

Does that mean bcmwl-kernel-source is responsible?

[Bug 993443] [NEW] Wireless takes a lot longer to come up (BCM4313) since kernel update

2012-05-02 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Been using 12.04 on this laptop for a while and the most recent Kernel
update (3.2.0-24.37) now means it takes about a minute before the
wireless turns on (AKA starts looking for access points and auto-
connecting).

Before, this would be happening as the laptop booted. The desktop would
load and it would connect to our AP in just a few seconds.

This might be a red-herring misfiling because bcmwl-kernel-source was
also upgraded to 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu6.1 but I didn't think it was
used for the 4313. Please feel free to retag if I'm wrong.

[Bug 974242] Re: Compiz edge detection code is moving windows against my will

2012-04-30 Thread Oli
I have tracked this down to the Place Window plugin. Disabling the
plugin releases a window from its edge-captivity and while it's turned
off future border clashes don't ensnare windows. That would be great if
it wasn't so necessary. Compiz is near-unusable without it so that's
only ever a temporary fix.

And this is testing with the precise-proposed version, 0.9.7.6-0ubuntu1.
It was the same before trying -proposed.

[Bug 973366] Re: Minimising applications go to the wrong window list (with Compiz)

2012-04-16 Thread Oli
I have found that enabling the "Keep previews of minimized
windows"-workaround in CCSM fixes this.

I'm not sure if that should be turned on by default or if my
configuration was just *that* non-standard. Either way, this is enough
for me.

[Bug 974242] [NEW] Compiz edge detection code is moving windows against my will

2012-04-05 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

My screen is Nvidia Twinview setup and I'm using Gnome Classic with
Compiz.

I have found that since updating to 12.04 windows have two detrimental
regressions.

 1. If I place a window between the first and second monitor (so it
overlaps both), the window is forced back over. I can understand this
for off-screen windows but between-monitors is silly. And there should
be an option for turning this off if there isn't one already.

 2. If I place a window half-off the bottom of the screen, all hell
breaks loose. Firstly it snaps back up so it's all on the screen (makes
sense if you like that sort of thing), but after that, there's no way to
detach it from the bottom of the screen. As soon as you do (and then
click anywhere) it snaps back down so the bottom of the window is back
at the bottom of the screen.

The same is true with the top (if you move a window too high up (say
holding alt and left-click-dragging the bottom up). I've found no way to
work around this other than to close the window and start again, or
restart compiz.

The first is a dual-screen issue, the second might affect everybody; but
they definitely seem related.

[Bug 974084] [NEW] Center speaker incorrectly mapped

2012-04-05 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

My onboard sound device:
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio
Controller [8086:3a3e]

As of an upgrade to Precise I've noticed that the center channel tries
to come out of the subwoofer and vice versa. In my 5.1 setup these are
both on the same cable.

I have checked that the volume is up and have tested with speaker-test
with pulseaudio disabled.

[Bug 973437] [NEW] Some applications showing up under wrong (and non-existent) package name

2012-04-04 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

I searched for Dia today in the Ubuntu Software Center. The top two
results were:

 - Diagram Editor (no icon, subtitled "dia", with stars)
 - Dia (proper icon, subtitled "Edit your Diagrams", no stars).

The first works fine (apart from there being no icon). The second gives
the following message:

Not found
There isn’t a software package called
“dia-gnome-gnome-gnome-gnome-gnome-gnome-gnome-gnome-gnome-gnome-gnome” in your
current software sources.

I'm not sure why they're separate but I suspect there's been a packaging
error at some point. The first needs an icon and the second needs to not
exist :)

[Bug 973366] Re: Minimising applications go to the wrong window list (with Compiz)

There's a lot of jargon around the window-applet/WMs so I've drawn a
very simple explanation of what's going on.

[Bug 973366] [NEW] Minimising applications go to the wrong window list (with Compiz)

2012-04-04 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

I have two screens in Twinview. On each screen there is a Gnome-Panel at
the bottom, each with its own window-list applet. Simple enough. If I
open a window and move it over the second screen, the window list
(correctly) updates.

But if I then minimise the application, it and its window-list entry
move over to the primary screen. Restoring the application from the
primary window-list applet moves it back to the second screen.

Steps for reproduction:

 - Prereqs: gnome-panel, compiz, two screens in Twinview
 - Create a new panel on second screen
 - Add Window List applet to new panel
 - Open any new window and move over to second screen
 - Minimise the window (in any way)
 - Glory as the window-list entry moves over to the primary window-list-applet.

I should point out that this only seems to happen with Compiz. I admit I
have very little understanding about how the window-list applet
interfaces with the WM to get the lists of applications so this could
very easily be a Compiz issue as much as it is a Gnome-Panel issue.

Feel free to call me an idiot for filing it in the wrong place.

[Bug 973201] [NEW] Scroll bars have no contrast in some windows

2012-04-04 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

I am not using the overlay scrollbars. They are disabled.

The scrollbars on some windows (Nautilus, Update Manager, Image Viewer,
USC, palimpsest, etc) seem to have very little contrast. In Firefox the
scrollbar track (aka trough) has a dark line on both sides. The slider
fits inside the track. In nautilus (et al) the slider appears to be too
large, and not outlined. The effect is a very hard to find slider.

I've attached a screenshot showing the comparison between Nautilus and
Firefox.

Ambiance has the same issue and this is with 12.04

2012-04-02 Thread Oli Wade
Happens also on Ubuntu 11.10 (x64); opening from a terminal the message
"Not enough memory" is displayed. There are a number of "pulseaudio"
messages in the syslog.

After following the advice in the thread linked in the skype community,
disabling the login sound seems to have helped somewhat and this has not
occurred so often (today was the first time for a while).

/etc/update-motd.d/99-footer will still pull in /etc/motd.tail if it
exists.

I don't see any reason why this would change or why this requires
documentation to be removed and/or changed.

[Bug 776067] [NEW] Applications fail to get correct geometry when hidden/shown with Compiz

2011-05-02 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I apologise for the cryptic title. I'll try to explain. I use the
"Classic" gnome-panels desktop with Compiz. Several applications provide
Notification area icons that if clicked will toggle the visibility of
the application (gwibber, banshee, liferea, etc).

When Compiz is used, each visibility cycle (from visible to invisible to
visible) moves the window to the right by 7px. I suggest that something
in the Window Manager is reporting or storing an incorrect z,y
coordinate.

This is constant for all applications that provide Notification Area
icons to toggle visibility. Standard minimising/maximising does not
illicit this bug. Things work as they should under Metacity, hence I'm
filing this against Compiz.

[Bug 765794] Re: Many "standard" panel applets not available

2011-04-30 Thread Oli
I found that the bonobo configuration files for the applets weren't
being loaded (hence they weren't available in the add-to-panel
dialogue).

I edited bonobo-activation-config.xml to look something like this:

/usr/lib/bonobo/servers
/usr/local/lib/bonobo/servers

And everything but the clock works again. That's another issue for
another day.

But why is a better question. I have a whole load of config files that
appear to have moved to dbus in brand-new installations. Why didn't my
upgrade port these applets to the new system?

2011-04-20 Thread Oli
To answer your question though, this is with a Clearlooks theme but it's
apparent (just slightly more subtle) with both "standard" Radiance and
Ambiance themes. This is an upgrade so I can't say how standard standard
is.

[Bug 766452] Re: Gnome Panel shows resize handle

2011-04-20 Thread Oli
I flipped out and filed another bug because these handles really ruin
Ubuntu. They're almost *everywhere* and they look awful. Here's the
other bug showing three different applications:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/767142
http://imgur.com/AJsmJ.png

And here's the panel on its own:

[Bug 767142] Re: Resize handles spoil almost every application

2011-04-20 Thread Oli
** Description changed:

I'm using Natty in Classic mode with Clearlooks. The new overlaid resize
grip ruins the finish on about every single application I have. Here's
- Terminato above Nautilus, above Liferea: http://imgur.com/AJsmJ.png
+ Terminator above Nautilus, above Liferea: http://imgur.com/AJsmJ.png

But it also hits Gwibber, Firefox... Basically anything without a lower
  status panel.
+
+ I also see similar gunk with other themes.

I'm struggling to see how backporting this from GTK3 (as I read) was
ever a desirable idea. Is there any chance this patch can be ripped out
and kicked into touch or is this something I'm going to to have to do
  for myself?

[Bug 767142] [NEW] Resize handles spoil almost every application

2011-04-20 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

I'm using Natty in Classic mode with Clearlooks. The new overlaid resize
grip ruins the finish on about every single application I have. Here's
Terminato above Nautilus, above Liferea: http://imgur.com/AJsmJ.png

But it also hits Gwibber, Firefox... Basically anything without a lower
status panel.

I'm struggling to see how backporting this from GTK3 (as I read) was
ever a desirable idea. Is there any chance this patch can be ripped out
and kicked into touch or is this something I'm going to to have to do
for myself?

[Bug 766452] [NEW] Gnome Panel shows resize handle

2011-04-19 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Related: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
panel/+bug/702879

This bug appears to be back. I'm getting ugly little resize handles on
my Gnome 2 panels.

Normally I'd be a little more verbose when adding a bug but I really
don't know what else I can say than: There are resize handles on gnome-
panel. They do nothing and look awful.

I suppose I could say: The backported resize handles look awful
everywhere. Please drop the patch.

[Bug 765794] Re: Many "standard" panel applets not available

2011-04-19 Thread Oli
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Just upgraded to Natty from a Maverick install. On setting it to Classic
Mode (I want the old Panel/Applet setup for now), things kick off. I get
several "Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?"
dialogues for very standard applets (nothing special) including:

  WindowListApplet
  ClockApplet
  NotificationAreaApplet

More than that, they're not available in the Add to Panel dialogue,
suggesting they're not even on the system.

I'm really struggling without the WindowListApplet and I think I'm going
to have to get something like DockBarX or use Docky's panel mode until
  this is fixed.

2011-04-15 Thread oli z
i deleted /usr/share/doc because i dont need all that documentation (have less
space...)
would be nice if the installation still works because i dont think this is a
big failure if the documentation is missing, so the installation should not
abort, but it does
