[Bug 1882781] Re: Gnome 3.36.2 leaking in 20.04

2020-06-17 Thread Omega
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1856838 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1856838

I haven't been running any of the weather widgets for a while now and I
had to do another reset of gnome just to get window animation speeds
back to normal.

This issue is definitely present on a vanilla configuration.

[Bug 1882781] [NEW] Gnome 3.36.2 leaking in 20.04

2020-06-09 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

I've noticed lately that the performance of the UI in Gnome 3.36.2 seems
to decay with uptime.

The most obvious manifestation is that over time, window animations have
a delay and feel "sticky". Applications themselves seem unaffected. When
I tell gnome to switch workspaces, there's about a half second to full
second delay before the animation happens. This also applies to things
like pressing the meta key to show all my windows or pressing alt-tab.
Each one appears to share the same delay.

I'm running a fairly unremarkable desktop setup using vanilla gnome on
Ubuntu 20.04.

My research on this issue seems to indicate that there were memory leak
issues in 18.xx versions of the OS, but that those were supposedly
fixed. The only thing I can conclude at this point is that a new issue
has emerged, there was a regression, or the original fix didn't work.

The animation delay is sapping productivity to the point that I
eventually have to reboot my system. The gnome-shell process definitely
leaks over time as it starts around ~300mb and if left for a day will
sit at ~600mb or more.

---

Regarding my overall hardware and nominal state of my system, I'm
experiencing this issue even as I'm creating this question. I'm running
the stock/vanilla gnome desktop, not the ubuntu customized one.

My system has 32gb of RAM, only 6gb of which are in use currently. My
CPU usage fluctuates across 12 vcores up to 20% max. I have an RTX 2060
for my GPU.

At least as best as I can tell, I see no issue with the amount of
resources gnome-shell is getting right now. 😉

---

There also appear to be other accounts of this same issue building up
since the release of 20.04. It's clear that this is a widespread issue:
https://www.reddit.com/r/gnome/comments/fxffcd/gnome_shell_336_in_ubuntu_2004_still_leaks/

I would treat this with some urgency as for regular users this bug
renders the OS completely unusable.

[Bug 1508573] Re: X11 keeps booting in failsafe mode due to xorg.conf having the nvidia set as primary GPU.

2016-03-05 Thread Omega-xis
hi there.

I managed to fix this by installing the nvidia-prime package and tweaking the
bumblebee config files a little.
this is weird though since on previous versions of ubuntu the installation of
the nvidia-prime package used to break bumblebee, but the same thing that
breaks it apparently fixed it too. My Geforce GTX840M still can't run on the
nvidia itself (using prime-select) but bumblebee works, so it's not a big deal
anymore. Bumblebee is however broken when I put my laptop to sleep mode, since
the discrete GPU is turned off but doesn't get back on again. a reboot fixes
this, but that's for another bug.
Do you still need the xdiagnose information? because I will happily provide it
for you since I've had so many issues with hybrid graphics before and I really
want this solved once and for all! I guess vulkan will fix this soon.

[Bug 1447267] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 AMD64 MSI 970 Gaming USB3.0 does not work

2016-01-05 Thread Omega
I am not sure how to help in your scenario. When I made the setting
adjustment I was not only able to use the existing USB 3.0 port, I was
able to get the USB 3.0 speeds. Did you validate zero transfer speed
difference between a USB 2.0 versus a USB 3.0 device? Is there anything
else you need to enable or configure on your machine to enable USB 3.0
specifically?

Regards,

[Bug 1447267] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 AMD64 MSI 970 Gaming USB3.0 does not work

2015-12-01 Thread Omega
Hello Tommy_CZ,

The workaround you provided was a success.
I was able to mount a USB 3.0 device and validated approximately 2x the data
transmission speed.
So USB 3.0 is now working for me.

Thank you for your support as I had nearly accepted the fate of using
USB 2.0 on this machine, and this is great.

I have no idea why: [GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="iommu=soft"] solves the problem- or
what 'iommu=soft' represents either.
I would like to know more about it or find a more permanent solution.

Thanks again--

there is a workaround to this.
install the nvidia-prime package and type
"sudo prime-select intel" this will force the intel GPU.

I am not the first and only to experience this bug.
Many other users of this motherboard who choose to use Ubuntu as their primary
operating system encounter this bug- however, I appear to be the first to go
through the effort of initiating a ticket.
Please help.

[Bug 1310781] Re: bad bignum encoding for curve25519-sha256 at libssh.org

2014-05-06 Thread Omega Weapon
I've just come across a knock on effect of this bug when configuring the
Ubuntu SSH server for curve25519-sha...@libssh.org key exchange only,
and using the latest Debian package openssh-client to connect.

Because Ubuntu's SSH server version doesnt match 6.6.1, the Debian SSH
client disables curve25519-sha...@libssh.org completely, getting rid of
the (presumably) most secure algorithm available:

==

debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_6.6.1p1 Debian-4
debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_6.6p1
Ubuntu-2ubuntu1
debug1: match: OpenSSH_6.6p1 Ubuntu-2ubuntu1 pat OpenSSH_6.5*,OpenSSH_6.6*
compat 0x1400
...
debug2: compat_kex_proposal: original KEX proposal: curve25519-sha...@libssh.org
debug2: Compat: skipping algorithm "curve25519-sha...@libssh.org"
debug2: compat_kex_proposal: compat KEX proposal:

The compat value being hit is in compat.c:100.

[Bug 1301588] [NEW] Allow job serialisation to be customisable

2014-04-02 Thread Omega Weapon
Public bug reported:

Currently the upstart service definition launches anacron with '-s',
which serialises its jobs - this defeats part of the purpose of running
it for me (cron.daily/weekly/monthly will serialise jobs just fine
courtesy of run-parts) - I have submitted a similar bug to Debian where
its easy to update the '/etc/default/anacron' to fix the behaviour and
get parallel jobs (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=743448).

I'm not familiar with upstart, so I've simply edited
'/etc/init/anacron.conf' in place on my server - please can anacron's
job serialisation be made configurable?

Thanks

[Bug 1280633] Re: Unable to export aufs mountpoint - qword_eol: fflush failed: errno 22 (Invalid argument)

2014-02-15 Thread Omega Weapon
Sigh, took me all day to work out that this is due to aufs not providing
a filesystem ID - add any old fsid to the export options, e.g:

/mnt/omegafw_aufs_backup/
omega1(rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check,fsid=1337)

and suddenly it works!

This is also mentioned in aufs' documentation:

http://aufs.sourceforge.net/aufs3/man.html#Exporting%20Aufs%20via%20NFS

Hopefully now when someone gets the 'qword_eol: fflush failed' useless
error message they'll know what to do.

[Bug 1280633] [NEW] Unable to export aufs mountpoint - qword_eol: fflush failed: errno 22 (Invalid argument)

2014-02-15 Thread Omega Weapon
Public bug reported:

Exporting the following aufs mountpoint (which is mounted):

==

/mnt/omegafw_aufs_backup
omega1(rw,sync,mountpoint,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)

and then mounting on a client machine results in the following error on
the server:

=

qword_eol: fflush failed: errno 22 (Invalid argument)

I have enabled debugging, the following is output:

A normal trivial nfs export worked (a disk with a few directories on
it).

The aufs filesystem bridges 4 disks which maintain 1780822
files/directories, so is pretty large. Its possible that rpc.mountd
can't cope, which is suggested in this Red Hat bug which appears to be
semi-ignored:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=812364

I'll be trying to do the same thing in Samba now.

[Bug 1236850] [NEW] qtcreator opens 5 new "not responding windows" when clicking the "develop"-tab at the home screen

2013-10-08 Thread Omega-xis
Public bug reported:

terminal output:
void DBusMenuExporterPrivate::addAction(QAction*, int): Already tracking action
"Follow Symbol Under Cursor" under id 135

this message occurs when clicking the "develop" tab at qt-creator's home
screen, at the same time it opens up 5 new windows that don' t respond
to anything, you can use the first created window to program, it works
perfectly fine, but it's pretty annoying having 5 bogus windows, which
apparently all belong to a single proces, since the windows can't be
induvidually killed, and they disappear when closing the first created
(responding) window.

[Bug 1186671] [NEW] ASUS G75 Backlight Controls not Working

2013-06-01 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

The F5 and F6 keys on my ASUS laptop are supposed to be able to control
my LCD backlight brightness when used in conjunction with the "fn" key.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be working.

Would love to see this fixed.

[Bug 1184735] [NEW] Segfault on sending email

2013-05-27 Thread Omega Weapon
Public bug reported:

Squirrelmail: 2:1.4.23~svn20120406-2
Description:Ubuntu 13.04
Release:13.04

Since upgrading from 11.04 or 11.10 to 13.04, I have found that sending
an email through squirrelmail fails. The HTTP connection associated with
the page fetch is closed immediately - looking in the apache log I see
the following:

=

[Mon May 27 20:16:02 2013] [notice] child pid 1240 exit signal
Segmentation fault (11)

=

Each attempt to send a mail is met by a segfault (is this actually php
segfaulting!??).

So far browsing mail works fine, no other obvious issues.

I have tried downgrading to 1.4.22-1 and 1.4.20-1ubuntu0.1, same failure
- I don't want to fiddle with the PHP install so have left it at that.

[Bug 1174101] [NEW] Only way to bookmark is through hotkeys.

2013-04-28 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

The only way I can add a bookmark currently is through a totally un-
hinted and undocumented hotkey (ctrl-d).

This should show up in the menus somewhere or at least be achievable by
dragging a folder to the sidebar.

I also think it would be *less* confusing if the bookmark list was
blended under the "Places" heading. Otherwise I have to scroll past
Devices just to see folders I've personally configured to be promptly
available. This would stop the feature from contradicting a good UX
because obviously the user would want the deliberately-made bookmark to
be more readily available than other items.

[Bug 852190] Re: 7392:7811 Edimax EW-7811Un USB dongle won't connect to networks (rtl8192cu module)

2013-04-28 Thread Omega
@Mikewhatever - There are only 40 people who have logged onto Launchpad
and complained about it.

I can guarantee you far more than 40 people are actually affected by
this. Most of which just throw their hands up and go on to speak ill of
Ubuntu and Linux.

Your response - while seemingly rational - abandons all intuition.

[Bug 1172511] [NEW] Ubuntu 13.04 won't boot with nvidia GTX670MX

2013-04-24 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

Attempts to boot a current image of Ubuntu 13.04 result in a black
screen after a period of CD/USB loading activity. The system becomes
unresponsive and doesn't recover until I do a hard reset.

I can get to a console by passing "nomodeset" as a kernel option, but
once at the console (only as a result of x failing to start), I'm
basically stuck.

This is on an ASUS G75-VX with an nVidia GTX670 MX. I have no reason to
believe this card uses Optimus, so I doubt that's the issue.

With only a day left, I'd hate to see six months of missed opportunities
for Ubuntu because what might be a simple configuration change to enable
VESA installations to happen still is missed. At least let people get
installed so that they can try updating!

[Bug 1165761] [NEW] Gnome settings keeps resetting my key bindings

2013-04-07 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

I configure my number pad for desktop switching navigation, but gnome

I have no idea why it keeps doing this, but all I do is reconfigure the

permanently instead of being constantly reset without my consent.

2012-12-17 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1083212] [NEW] Windows keep sneaking onto the wrong workspace.

2012-11-26 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

Every time I maximize or snap a window to an edge of the screen, it
seems like compiz ends up accidentally assigning it to more than one
desktop.

So, if I have the default 4 desktops and I maximize in desktop 1, the
window shows up in desktop 2 and 3 because the shadow around the edge
spills over to the other desktops.

This is annoying and it seems like compiz isn't clipping windows to the
right desktop based on the one they're maximized in. Instead, it's
calculating membership of desktop based on whether the window happens to
be rendering pixels in it.

This can create some VERY confusing situations where the desktop
experience just feels totally broken.

[Bug 902557] Re: Wireless not working in 12.04 for rtl8192ce (RTL8188CE)

2012-05-29 Thread Omega
Ubuntu 12.04, using an ASUS PCE-N15 with the RTL8188CE chipset.
Connects to the network but the connection is very flakey.
Intermittent dropouts.

Best way to test is with streaming audio. I get constant dropouts,
especially when browsing at the same time.

For reference, an 802.11g wifi *bridge* plugged into my ethernet has
been performing better in the same spot!

[Bug 1001684] Re: UEFI Support Completely Broken

2012-05-19 Thread Omega
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 924622 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/924622

This bug is not a duplicate of the one referenced.

The other one is referencing a video issue, mine is referencing the
inability to install to UEFI-based systems!

Please read my description more carefully.

This is what I'm talking about when I say that the triage process is
broken in the Ubuntu community. You guys just aren't internalizing the
problem descriptions!

** Description changed:

My initial circumstance is that I was upgrading a perfectly-functioning
- dual booting (Windows 7 & Ubuntu 11.04) machine.

+ The 11.10 install that I did in 2011 went without a hitch and safely
detected that I was UEFI and installed accordingly. When I tried to
upgrade this installation, 12.04 - for some reason - decided that I
shouldn't be able to boot both my Windows and my Ubuntu systems!

Frustrated - but ever diligent - I reinstalled Windows 7 (in UEFI mode)
  and Ubuntu 12.04 fresh.

Windows 7? No problem. Installed, was done as UEFI and I was off to
  the races there.

Ubuntu 12.04? Forget it. It seemed to think that torching my GPT+UEFI
boot partition would be a great idea and reinstalling it with some kind
of MBR+GPT grub tool would be a better idea.

Great. So now I have been forced to downgrade to MBR booting and I've
completely lost access to my Windows 7 install.

This is an enormous regression and if it can be solved is not even made
slightly apparent through the Ubuntu 12.04 installation interface.

Get your act together guys, my support for your project hangs by a
thread at this point. I'm sick of the regressions and sloppy
  triage/testing/QA!

[Bug 993799] Re: lightdm freezes when logging in with password

2012-05-04 Thread Omega-xis
something strange happened.
i switched the display manager to KDM (dpkg -configure)
after a reboot and logging in using KDM it started to ask all kinds of
passwords for unlocking keyrings etc.
so I concluded that wasn't a huge success so I switched it back to lightdm and
strangely the bug vanished

so i'll mark it as invalid...

[Bug 971758] [NEW] compiz makes games lag

2012-04-02 Thread Omega-xis
Public bug reported:

when I play trine / trine2 / shadowgrounds / shadowgrounds survivior /
oil rush / amnesia the dark decent while compiz enabled, they suffer
heavily from video lag, lowering the graphics will not work! it happens
every time since I upgraded my pc to ubuntu 12.04 beta2

logging in to gnome-classic (no-effects) is my current workaround to
play these games, games like xonotic / open-arena / cogs and most wine-
games are not effected by this bug...

my laptop also doesn't suffer from this bug but that's explainable since
my laptop has an optimus-card, so compiz runs on an intel HD3000 while
the games run on my Nvidia-GT540M. so the games are not affected by
compiz...

most people will disagree with me, but I don't want to log-out unity and
log back into the gnome-panel environment every time I want to play a
game...

[Bug 956839] [NEW] crash when right-clicking something

2012-03-16 Thread Omega-xis
Public bug reported:

exactly what the discription said:
when i want a context menu of e.g. nautilus or right-click for a quicklist menu
on the unity-bar it suddenly crashes and restarts, after a few tries it will
fail to restart leaving me without a window manager :-( i often restart unity
from terminal (ctrl+alt+F1 --> DISPLAY=:0 unity --replace) but rigfht-clicking
wil crash it again.

the only time it doesn't crash is when I right-click in a virtual
machine...

[Bug 954296] Re: network speed drops after a certain amount of time

2012-03-14 Thread Omega-xis
update: today i've shifted my pc 10 inches and placed one antenna onto
the metal frame of my desk, and the other one layed down on the floor,
for some reason i was able to manage a stable 1,4MB/s connection for
over an hour after that speed dropped again maybe 20 inches will do
it?

[Bug 954296] [NEW] network speed drops after a certain amount of time

2012-03-13 Thread Omega-xis
Public bug reported:

I cannot access the internet in any way until I reconnect with my access
point, after reconnection I only have about 40 seconds to
download/upload stuff or the speed will drop to 800 bytes a second. the
pc reports i'm still connected, but I cannot load any page or download
anything. this is only the case with THIS computer (linksys WMP600N
dual-band PCI network card) it didn't happen before the 12.04 upgrade
and it DOES happen with a different wireless adaptor, although my laptop
(also ubuntu 12.04) doesn't have this issue.

i've added a picture of my system-monitor showing the network speeds
just after (re)connection
