[Bug 1927850] [NEW] update-manager package changelog contains non-conformant date

2021-05-09 Thread Ori Avtalion
Public bug reported:

Reported for update-manager 1:21.04.8, but this applies to many earlier
versions.

The update-manager deb package changelog file contains this non-
conformant date:

  Thu, 24 April 2014 14:58:38 +0200

It should be changed to:

  Thu, 24 Ap 2014 14:58:38 +0200

The date prevents the correct parsing of the file. For example,
aptitude-changelog-parser produces this error:

  aptitude-changelog-parser: warning: changelog(l781): invalid
abbreviated month name 'April'
  aptitude-changelog-parser: warning: changelog(l781): cannot parse
non-conformant date '24 April 2014 14:58:38 +0200'

** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1551623] Re: [SRU] package gconf2 3.2.6-3ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: dependency problems - leaving triggers unprocessed

2020-04-12 Thread Ori Avtalion
I'm seeing the "Could not install 'gconf2'" error during upgrade from
19.10 to the 20.04 beta.

The crash reports says the error is "dependency problems - leaving

[Bug 1836659] Re: Ubuntu 18.04's ibus package breaks password fields in Firefox again

2019-07-31 Thread Ori Avtalion
The same bug existed in the older version. This is not a regression.

The patch for the release does include both of the relevant fixes:
input-sources: do not grab keyboard with set-content-type
input-sources: avoid unneeded status icon re-creation

I'm not sure if me not encountering the latest issue I mentioned was due
to chance, if the master branch contains some other fix.

I don't know if you should hold up the release because of this issue. As
a multi-layout user it constantly annoyed me and I was glad to finally
get it fixed.

[Bug 1836659] Re: Ubuntu 18.04's ibus package breaks password fields in Firefox again

2019-07-31 Thread Ori Avtalion
Looks like the version I tested still has issues with layout switching
(unrelated to the password field issue in this bug). When I switch from
e.g. English to Hebrew, the indicator shows the other layout but when I
type I still get English.

With the latest gnome-flashback master branch I didn't experience this
glitch (based on several weeks of testing.)

Whoops!

OK, tested with:
  gnome-flashback 3.30.0-1ubuntu6.1
  gnome-flashback-common 3.30.0-1ubuntu6.1
  gnome-session-flashback 1:3.30.0-1ubuntu6.1

Looks good!

[Bug 1836659] Re: Ubuntu 18.04's ibus package breaks password fields in Firefox again

2019-07-30 Thread Ori Avtalion
Tested on disco with
gnome-flashback 3.28.0-1ubuntu1.4
gnome-flashback-common 3.28.0-1ubuntu1.4
gnome-session-flashback 1:3.28.0-1ubuntu1.4

(Note that disco's regular version is 3.30, so I had to downgrade)

I can confirm that the password field does not cause the ibus indicator
to restart constantly.

I did find another bug with the password field, but I'll report it to
gnome-flashback separately after more testing with gnome-shell:
If I'm on a password field, I can't change the layout to anything other than
English.

Will this be available in disco as well?

Besides breaking password fields, the commit also fixes an issue I had
sometimes with layouts not switching at all, until I restart ibus.

[Bug 1258778] Re: IBus input candidates not shown in GNOME Fallback session

2015-10-11 Thread Ori Avtalion
Are you sure this is fixed in 14.04?

I'm still not able to add IBus input candidates in GNOME Fallback's Text Entry
settings.
I had to resort to manually editing the settings through dconf-editor, as
described here: http://askubuntu.com/a/512259

Having done that, the language is added to the indicator in the panel,
but switching via the hotkey doesn't work: It changes the indicator to
the IBus layout, but the keyboard presses are those of the previously-
cycled xkb layout. Selecting the input method by clicking the indicator
with the mouse works fine.

Note: It works fine in 15.04, but 14.04 is an LTS release, and a fix
would be appreciated.

[Bug 447692] Re: Ctrl + Alt + F1 etc. fail to send me to console

2015-08-20 Thread Ori Avtalion
I began having this problem after installing a new graphics card:
GeForce GTX 750 Ti.

I agree that it's just a display problem - the console itself works
fine, just doesn't show up.

I may need to play with some grub settings to fix this.
Another related effect: The computer seems to wait for the graphics card when
shutting down. Only does so after several seconds of inactivity followed by a
beep.

[Bug 1423877] [NEW] shut down dialog shuts down when pressing cancel

2015-02-20 Thread Ori Avtalion
Public bug reported:

I'm using gnome-panel on 14.04.

When choosing Shut Down... from the menu, a dialog pops up asking me if I
want to shut down.
If I press Cancel or press the 'x' button on the window, the system still
shuts down.

The dialog window should respect my choice :)

[Bug 1418420] [NEW] Confusing title for Java package caused by _get_application_for_package

2015-02-05 Thread Ori Avtalion
Public bug reported:

Using version 0.196.12

Recently, a bunch of Java 6 packages needed to be updated on my machine:
icedtea-6-jre-cacao
icedtea-6-jre-jamvm
openjdk-6-jre
openjdk-6-jre-headless
openjdk-6-jre-lib
tzdata
tzdata-java

Update-Manager has decided that the name for the openjdk-6-jre package should
be OpenJDK Java 6 Policy Tool.
It then decided that openjdk-6-jre is the representative package of that group,
so the entire update was under a drop-down named OpenJDK Java 6 Policy Tool.
(See screenshot)

Upon cursory inspection of the code, it seems like the function
_get_application_for_package picks a representative name for a package
based on the applications it provides. (Those that have a .desktop file)

This logic seems faulty. The Java Policy Tool is not a good
description for that package, or for the group. It should use the
description of openjdk-6-jre which is OpenJDK Java runtime, using
Hotspot JIT. Also, it's odd that the Java Policy Tool requires a 38MB
update. That program is rarely used.

I don't have a suggestion on how to improve the algorithm itself to
detect whether a desktop application provided by a package should be its
description or not.

[Bug 831768] Re: aptitude cannot handle conflicts with multiarch enabled

2011-10-23 Thread Ori Avtalion
Thanks everyone for confirming the bug. I don't think there's any more
need to report it.

If you have any other useful information, please provide it.

Otherwise, please don't turn this bug report into a rant.

This is the first ubuntu release with multiarch enabled, so it's not
that far-fetched that there will be problems with non-core tools (such
as aptitude, as helpful as it might be).

Shahar, it's very likely that all of the multiarch bugs are due to the
same problem, yes.

provided in the alternate CD, the following errors are printed:

The process then exits.

This seems related to the multiarch dpkg changes in oneiric.

Oddly enough, after the first time I got the message, I tried running
the script again, and it worked fine (I cancelled it later when it was
downloading packages). On every later re-run, it failed on the same
error.

You are correct, Bryce! Thanks :)

Unsetting the key fixed the glitches for me:

[Bug 802747] [NEW] window redraw glitches caused by ubuntu patch

2011-06-27 Thread Ori Avtalion
Public bug reported:

There are several metacity bugs related to glitches / artefacts. I'm not
sure if this is a duplicate or not, but I have some more information.

Using the ubuntu's patch to metacity 16-capture-before-unmap.patch causes the
glitches to appear.
I reported it in the patch's original bug that tracks its development:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-2d/+bug/696864

To reproduce one of the problems related to border redraw (copied from
the bug report above):

Using the Human theme, go to a clean desktop and open several terminals.
they will tile. Now hold alt-tab to quickly change the focus between
them. The focus rectangle will move between the windows, and when it
will disappear, the edges of the window decoration will be removed, and
not redrawn.

I have a feeling this is a cause for many glitches in metacity related
to window redraw. Since I can't consistently reproduce all of those
glitches, I have no way to be sure, but removing 16-capture-before-
unmap.patch from metacity *does* make the ones I noticed go away.

[Bug 546966] [NEW] autoconf's mktime test gets stuck, takes too much CPU

2010-03-25 Thread Ori Avtalion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autoconf

Using autoconf2.59 2.59-1 on lucid amd64.

When running the ${ac_cv_func_working_mktime+set} test, the conftest
tool starts taking up a lot of CPU and doesn't stop.

To test:
$ apt-get source gawk# for example. happens with other source packages
such as cabextract
$ cd gawk-3.1.6.dfsg
$ ./configure

The bad test will kick in after printing checking for working
mktime...

[Bug 543799] [NEW] package has .desktop file that errors and does nothing

2010-03-21 Thread Ori Avtalion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs22

The binary package emacs22-bin-common 22.2-0ubuntu8 comes with the
desktop file /usr/share/applications/emacsclient-emacs22.desktop

The file specifies the Exec key with the command:
/usr/bin/emacsclient.emacs22 -a emacs22

Running the command yields the error:
/usr/bin/emacsclient.emacs22: file name or argument required
Try `/usr/bin/emacsclient.emacs22 --help' for more information

The desktop file itself is also confusing because the emacs22 binary
package already comes with the emacs22.desktop file which executes the
command /usr/bin/emacs22-x

Also, from the two files' descriptions, which are Emacs 22 (X11) and
Emacs 22 (client) it's hard to understand the difference between them.

[Bug 441397] [NEW] crash after trying to eject a mounted ntfs partition

2009-10-03 Thread Ori Avtalion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Using 2.28.1-0ubuntu1 on Karmic.

I have an ntfs partition mounted using ntfs-3g.
When using totem to play a media file on that partition, the Movie menu has
an Eject option.
Clicking it triggers a crash.

The core dump doesn't have much info, but it seems to crash in
/usr/lib/gio/modules/libgioremote-volume-monitor.so

I think the Eject option should be disabled for drives it makes no
sense to eject.

[Bug 355998] Re: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

2009-05-05 Thread Ori Avtalion
Thanks for the info, Hank.

The bug was already confirmed for the Sansa (the device I have). I was
asking Josef about the Gigabeat, because perhaps it had a similar bug in
libmtp. (which was probably fixed already)

Perhaps you should file a new bug for the problem of copying files after
mounting in MTP mode.

[Bug 355998] Re: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

2009-05-04 Thread Ori Avtalion
Hi Marcus,

It has been established that the bug manifests in the original Sansa
e200 firmware, and that the solution solves it. (The same is true for
the rockbox firmware)

Also, the USB product ID provided by the rockbox firmware is exactly the
same one provided by the original firmware. I have just verified this
again on my own device, and have also discussed this with rockbox
developers a few weeks ago.

What may confuse you is the fact that the original Sansa firmware allows
for two modes of operation: MSC and MTP. In each of those modes, a
different product ID is reported. (This factoid, too, was again just
verified by me)

Rockbox's firmware uses the MSC product id, since it doesn't support
MTP. Thus it provides the SAME functionality as the original firmware
using the same product ID.

If I have failed to convince you, please explain why you think it's a
rockbox bug.

2009-04-25 Thread Ori Avtalion
Josef, 2352 is 930 in hexadecimal, so that's more of a hack than a fix.

I think your edit simply disabled gphoto's assumption that your device
runs in MTP mode (it's probably running in MSC mode).

Does your device have the option of switching between those two modes?
Can you please change it to MTP mode, connect it to the computer, and run lsusb
again?

Martin,

I have spoken with Marcus Meissner, a libgphoto2 developer, and was asked to
file a bug in libmtp.
The music_player.h file is maintained in libmtp and synced in libgphoto2, as
clearly evidenced in the logs:
http://gphoto.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gphoto/trunk/libgphoto2/camlibs/ptp2/music-players.h?view=log

[Bug 337342] Re: GUI designer doesn't work

2009-03-09 Thread Ori Avtalion
The git snapshot c0f2f81c6817a6a1639d27d15b8b58f64b848e5e from which the
package was created doesn't have that feature when compiled in jaunty.

The latest snapshot does.

It was fixed by this commit:

[Bug 332624] [NEW] Inconsistencies when windows change their icon

2009-02-21 Thread Ori Avtalion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Using metacity 1:2.25.144-0ubuntu1 in jaunty.

When a window changes its icon, the window list panel applet updates
with the new icon, but the icons in the window decoration and the
alt+tab window switcher display the old one.

Restarting metacity fixes the inconsistency and displays the same icon
everywhere.

There are many ways to reproduce this. Here are a couple, just to
confirm it's not specific to applications:

1) Open up a new white canvas image in GIMP. The icon in the window list
changes to a white rectangle, but the window decoration stays as the
gimp logo. Fill the white canvas with black to see the icon in the
window list change. Still no change to the window decoration icon. Kill
and run metacity again to see the icon change.

2) Open a chat window in Pidgin. Ask the person to change status to
Away. Notice the window's icon change in the window list, and not in
the decoration.

3) Start OpenOffice and open a document. The icon in the window list
should change to a document, while the icon in the decorator will be the
OpenOffice logo.

[Bug 332624] Re: Inconsistencies when windows change their icon

2009-02-21 Thread Ori Avtalion
I have isolated the bug to a specific revision of metacity and filed a
bug upstream.

As to the importance of this bug, it makes pidgin a bit less usable:
I have several chat windows open which several of them has the online icon,
and one has the away icon. I want to send the away one a message, so I
click alt+tab and look for it, but it shows no window with the away icon. Then
I either tab one by one and check the window title, or use the mouse.

Another effect caused by the bug:
Apps that don't set an icon (such as gitk) will have a black page icon in the
window decoration and a generic window icon in the window list.
