I can confirm this in all ubuntu versions from 8.04 to 10.04. According to SCIM wiki: http://www.scim-im.org/wiki/faq/general/why_xim_apps_does_not_work If we cannot use scim in xterm, this is because scim XIM support module not loaded use the following command: scim -d -c socket -f x11 -e socket as normal user will start scim XIM module, then xterm can now input in SCIM. Re: [Bug 555184] Re: default chinese font isn't ttf-wqy-microhei
In fact, Fang Qian has written a gtk+ based gui application for this. Though I personally think it is way too overkill to write a gui application for this simple task, a less-than-5-line CLI script is enough for this. Re: [Bug 475240] Re: ttf-wqy-microhei ttf-wqy-zenhei break Korean fonts
For a long time when wqy was not present in ubuntu, Chinese text does not look good in en_US.utf8. Because they are shown as Korean or Japan font. So, if this change is reversed, should Chinese users report the bugfix itself as a bug? The point is: when locale is en_US.utf8, only *one* of CJK fonts will look good. If you put a Korean fonts as the highest priority, then Chinese and Japan text will not look good at en_US.utf8. If we put a Chinese fonts as the highest priority, then Korean and Japan text will not look good at en_US.utf8. If we put a Japan fonts as the highest priority, then Korean and Chinese text will not look good at en_US.utf8. The point is you should set the locale in order to raise your font to the highest priority. Otherwise, in en_US.utf8 no one could decide which one in CJK should be the highest priority. Or there may be another solution: make a unique font which looks good in all CJK characters... [Bug 206018] Re: ttf-wqy-zenhei and other Chinese fonts got mixed up where the same style is expected
This is not a bug, nor does it being a wishlist. Sans font family and Serif font family are different font family, in Chinese, they refers to “有衬线” and “无衬线” font. Song Ti and Uming are typical type of Serif font family, i.e. “有衬线” font. Hei Ti is the typical type of Sans font family, i.e. “无衬线” font. If the web site specifies different font family within the same page, we should display as is, this is really the correct behavior, not a bug. IE6 in WinXP cannot display both sans-family chinese font and serif- family chinese font in the same webpage, this is a bug. [Bug 229578] Re: ttf-wqy-zenhei makes libqt4.4 to render all fonts unantialiased
I am using the SIMHEI.ttf, STXIHEI.ttf, STZHONGS.ttf as the mono, sans, and serif fonts, all of them has absolutely no embedded bitmap, the preference of them are only second to bitstream families. such configuration works perfectly in 7.04 and 7.10. My observation now is that SIMHEI and STXIHEI got wqy-zen-hei bitmap, STZHONGS got non-antialiased without bitmap, all of them occur at 12pt and 14pt. other sizes not tested. It seems that wqy-zen-hei bitmap is mapped to all sans-style fonts, not the wqy-zen-hei font alone. and similar, uming's no-aa settings is applied to other serif-style fonts. After one-hour-read of the fontconfig document and lots of changes in my fontconfig files, I get all I want: the above three fonts all show anti-aliased without any bitmap font at all. Since things *do* get right after some configuration change, I think it is unlikely to be the issue of Qt. Of course, your mind may vary, and probably both Qt and the font configuration has problem. -- Sincerely, Pan, Shi Zhu. > The rendering of *Chinese* text with bitmaps is correct and not a bug. > The other Chinese font (AR PL UMing *) from the ttf-arphic-uming package > also has embedded bitmaps enabled for the same reason as WQY ZenHei has. -- ttf-wqy-zenhei makes libqt4.4 to render all fonts unantialiased https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I am here to emphasis that, this does not only happen in QT4, but also in QT3. Because it *does* happen in all of my QT3 applications. i.e. fonts are affected for applications which does not use wqy-zen-hei at all. and this is the case for both QT3 and QT4. I can confirm it, on Kubuntu 8.04 KDE359 fresh install and upgrade everything to the newest version, ttf-wqy-zenhei will render ALL chinese text as non-antialiased (i.e. bitmap) even if the fonts is not ttf-wqy-zenhei. [Bug 206018] Re: ttf-wqy-zenhei and other Chinese fonts got mixed up where the same style is expected
I don't know whether WQY is the best font or not. But I know it is much better to use a sans-serif-style font as the default screen font than a serif-style one. Yes WQY is not perfect, and IMO it is far inferior than the STXIHEI (华文细黑) and SIMHEI (黑体), but we can improve it, can't we? And it is at least much better than continuing with a serif-style font as the default screen font. Someone thinks that the blurry font is bad for children learning Chinese, Yes, and I personally think any font below 16pt is too bad for children to learn, I seriously suggest those who has children to use a huge font for them. That's a good practice anyway. I don't think there will be much people second your point. Using a serif style font "Sont Ti" as the default screen font is ugly and many people could not accept it any more. That is the reason both "Microsoft" and "Apple" had switched to sans-serif style font "Hei Ti" as the main screen font. Apple is the first, Microsoft Windows Vista is the second, why not Linux do the switch? I agree that there's no need to change font just for showing something different from Windows. But you should know that Windows vista use san-serif style font "Ya Hei" as the default screen font NOW! For LTS, I think the WQY is actually tested more that uming, why? Because many people around me will install WQY immediately after they install the ubuntu linux. [Bug 105376] Re: Kubuntu 7.04beta Alt. CD install not create a new user.
I had just downloaded and test under 7.04final release cd, this problem seems to have been solved. [Bug 105376] Re: Kubuntu 7.04beta Alt. CD install not create a new user.
I am using the default installation method... not sure if it's OEM one. Since the 7.04 final version is released, I am downloading the final version and see if the problem solved or if I had missed something during the installation. I'll come back after I had tested with the 7.04 final version. -- Kubuntu 7.04beta Alt. [Bug 105376] Kubuntu 7.04beta Alt. CD install not create a new user.
Public bug reported: install Kubuntu 7.04beat Alternative CD, English, fresh install. After the installation the system boots and prompt me to input user and password. But, during the whole installation process, I've never been prompted to create a new user and set the password. So I cannot access the system after doing a fresh install. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Kubuntu 7.04beta Alt.
