[Bug 671898] Re: Suspend quirks incorrect for Sony Viao PCG-FX190

2010-11-20 Thread Pat Double
This file supercedes the previous quirks db file. With the previous one
I noticed that after some usage with resume (could be several minutes),
the kernel would lock. I haven't had trouble with this setup and have
used it quite a bit after resume.

Note that this file will need to be modified as it is likely too
specific with respect to the machine selection, but I don't have the
experience to decide what is important or not.

[Bug 671898] Re: Suspend quirks incorrect for Sony Viao PCG-FX190

2010-11-09 Thread Pat Double
Attached two files I needed to get suspend working. Perhaps there is a
better way to do this but I did not see it.

74chvt changes to a console VT before suspend (and back after resume).
Otherwise resume doesn't always work.

20imagesize reduces the hibernate image size. The max memory on this
model is 512MB, hibernate rares works without this config. If there's a
better way, I'd be happy to see it.

[Bug 300685] [NEW] gufw text should be updated to read firewall

2008-11-21 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gufw

It would be nice to change the user visible text of gufw that references
gufw to be firewall. For example, the tray icon tool tip says Gufw
enabled - Deny all. For the average user it would make more sense to
say Firewall enabled - Deny all. I see two other places that could be
improved: File | Gufw log menu item and the Edit | Preferences...
dialog has entries for Gufw logging and ufw logging.

[Bug 284408] Re: jockey does not offer fglrx for ATI Radeon Mobility 9700

2008-10-22 Thread Pat Double
It seems there is some confusion about what the driver claims to
support. In some documentation the Mobility 9700 is supported, in others
it is not listed. I visited ATI's site and the Mobility 9700 is
available in the driver selection and it goes to Catalyst 8.10.

In a previous note the lspci output reports my card as a 9600 M10. In
the Xorg.0.log it reports as:

Chipset: ATI Radeon Mobility 9600/9700 (M10/M11) NP (AGP) (ChipID =
0x4e50)

Should upstream be contacted to determine if they intend to support the
Mobility 9700 ? Up to Catalyst 8.9 the card has been supported. I have
not tried 8.10 because I am using Intrepid.

[Bug 284967] [NEW] System Log Viewer does not show history for /var/log/syslog

2008-10-17 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

There are five logs shown in my log viewer, auth.log, daemon.log,
messages, syslog and Xorg.0.log. auth.log, daemon.log, messages and
syslog have historical files such as syslog.0, syslog.1.gz, syslog.2.gz,
etc. For auth.log, daemon.log and messages I can see more than the
current date in both the calendar in the bottom left and in the log
list. For syslog I only see the current date. I do have the files in
/var/log and they have the same permissions as /var/log/syslog and
/var/log/auth.log*.

[Bug 280159] Re: Intrepid 2.6.27-6 fails to boot with white screen

2008-10-14 Thread Pat Double
Actually 2.6.27-6 does not fix this. It appears to be the v86d package.
I had installed it about the time the kernel upgrade occurred. I removed
this and I have performed several cycles and have not had a problem.
With v86d the behavior varies, sometimes I get the white screen,
sometimes I get a usplash screen but with strange colors and
resolutions, once I did get the correct splash screen.

Booting fails with generic 2.6.27-6 kernel on Intrepid. I have an ATI
Radeon Mobility 9700. The grub screen shows and then when I choose to

[Bug 279605] [NEW] Volume pop-up leaves artifacts on dual head config

2008-10-07 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

When I use hot keys to adjust the sound volume with a dual head
configuration, an artifact is left on the secondary head when the pop up
goes away. My primary head is the laptop display (LVDS) and is to the
right of my second head (DVI-0).

When my cursor is on the second head and I adjust the volume the pop up
displays on the second head correctly and nothing displays on the
primary head and there are no artifacts. When my cursor is on the
primary head and I adjust the volume the pop up displays on the primary
head and a rectangle the size of the pop up but using the background
color displays on the second head. When the pop up goes away, the
rectangle remains on the second head. If I minimize and restore a window
or otherwise cause a redraw the artifact goes away on the second head.

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 beta, updated as of this writing. I am using the
GNOME desktop.

I'm sorry but I no longer have those files. I had to restore my 8.04

when fglrx support xserver 1.5. Possibly for 8.10 beta.

[Bug 212400] Re: Resume from suspend to ram stopped working, system unresponsive

It cannot fix it because fglrx is not compatible with Xorg server
version 1.5. The open source radeon driver works with my Radeon Mobility
9700 for suspend, but the performance is noticeably slow and there are
other strange things with respect to clone mode, etc. We'll have to wait
until fglrx support Xorg server 1.5.

2008-08-21 Thread Pat Double
I am not sure if this should be a separate bug, but my upgrade failed
due to rarian-compat post install script failing when running upate-
xmlcatalog. Here's the script:

#!/bin/sh
set -e
# Automatically added by dh_installxmlcatalogs
if [ $1 = configure ]; then
update-xmlcatalog --add --type uri --id
http://scrollkeeper.sourceforge.net/dtds/scrollkeeper-omf-1.0/; --package
rarian-compat --local /usr/share/xml/scrollkeeper/dtds/catalog.xml

update-xmlcatalog --add --type uri --id
http://scrollkeeper.sourceforge.net/dtds/scrollkeeper-omf-1.0/;
--package rarian-compat --root

fi
# End automatically added section

I am unfamiliar with management of the xml catalog but it looks like the
same id is being added twice. I modified the update-xmlcatalog calls to
append || true so I could complete my install, not the best, but
otherwise I would need to restore from backup.

[Bug 225671] [NEW] Initial folder sharing says I need the priviledge until after logout

2008-05-02 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

I am using GNOME on Hardy. I am attempting to use the file manager
(Places - Home Folder) to enable sharing for a folder. This is the
first time I have shared a folder so I am prompted to install the
necessary packages. I do so, but then I am told I need privileges in
order to create a user share. I actually do have the privileges but I
need to logout and back in after installing the packages in order for
the system to recognize it. This should at least be notified to the user
to logout and back in after installing the sharing packages.

[Bug 221362] [NEW] gtimelog defaults do not work

2008-04-24 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtimelog

There are defaults in gtimelog ($HOME/.gtimelog/gtimelogrc) that cause
functionality to not work on standard installs of 8.04. The examples I
have are:

mailer = x-terminal-emulator -e mutt -H %s
editor = gvim

I think the editor should be editor since this alternative is
managed by Ubuntu and is set to something that exists. gvim is not
installed by default nor do I intend to install it.

For mailer, mutt is not installed by default. It would be good to
use evolution since this is installed by default. I have not figured out
how to tell evolution --component=mail to include the file argument %s
as the message body, but I'm sure some else can.

With the current defaults the edit timelog.txt function does not work
and the daily reports do not work.

[Bug 219197] [NEW] gnome-panel looses location of locked items

2008-04-18 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have the default gnome panel applets in the top right corner of my
panel. These used to stay in place pretty well. It seems now when I
reboot they will be re-arranged. I can move them back and lock but a
reboot will re-order.

I think the problem may be the persistent screen size settings. I have a
1920x1200 laptop panel and an external 1680x1050 LCD at work. When at
work I use 1680x1050 clone mode. Otherwise I use 1920x1200. When I login
from work with my last dimension setting at 1680x1050, gdm starts at
1920x1200 and then resizes while logging in. Perhaps the resize confuses
the panel. I don't remember this happening if I reboot from 1920x1200
into 1920x1200.

[Bug 218675] [NEW] kteatime-kde4 does not display tray icons correctly with Human icon set

2008-04-17 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kteatime-kde4

I have kteatime-kde4 installed using Ubuntu GNOME. I do not have a full
KDE4 install. The packages I selected are kteatime-kde4, yakuake-kde4
and systemsettings-kde4. When I change the icon set from Oxygen to Human
the tray icons for kteatime-kde4 show a document icon, not the tea cup
icon. If I switch back to Oxygen they are displayed correctly.

I assume the problem is that Human does not include icons for kteatime-
kde4. It seems that either there should be a fallback, such as to
Oxygen.

[Bug 218196] [NEW] smartd.conf needs appropriate config default such -d sat

2008-04-16 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smartmontools

Installing smartmontools does not work out of the box. In most cases the
desktop version of Ubuntu uses the SCSI layer to communication with ATA
devices. That requires -d sat to be specified in /etc/smartd.conf. It
would be nice if that were already there when I install the package. I
understand not all systems may be the same. Perhaps the installer could
detect what is appropriate?

[Bug 217798] [NEW] tsclient should recognize Xephyr for XDMCP login

2008-04-15 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tsclient

Please forgive my ignorance if I am mistaken, but I believe Xephyr is a
superior alternative to Xnest. I think tsclient should recognize Xephyr
for XDMCP logins in addition to Xnest. I installed xserver-xephyr but
tsclient did not recognize it. Unfortunately the arguments to Xnest and
Xephyr are not the same.

[Bug 217526] Re: firefox offers to install a java plugin, but clicking next does nothing

2008-04-15 Thread Pat Double
I am having the same problem but a little different setup. I have sun-
java6-jdk and sun-java5-jdk installed. I visited a site using the Java
plugin which prompted me to install the missing plugin. I am given four
options: GCJ, Sun Java 6, Sun Java 5 and GCJ (IcedTea). I selected Sun
Java 6, clicked next and a screen briefly should something with a Finish
button then closed. The page reloads with the same prompt to install
missing plugins.

There are plugin files in /usr/lib/jvm, but nothing in /usr/lib/firefox.

[Bug 217232] [NEW] guidedog menu item does not show in GNOME

2008-04-14 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: guidedog

guidedog puts it's .desktop entry into
/usr/share/applnk/System/guidedog.desktop which is a deprecated
location. KDE will still read these, but GNOME apparently does not and
so there is no menu entry for guidedog after installing.

[Bug 217238] [NEW] kde4 applications do not run from menu in GNOME

2008-04-14 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-kde4-desktop

I am running a fairly default Ubuntu 8.04 beta install, using GNOME. I
do like some apps that are KDE such as Yakuake. AFAIK, Synaptic only
presents yakuake-kde4, which is OK with me, so I installed it. The menu
entry will not start yakuake however because /usr/lib/kde4/bin is not in
the path. This is even after a reboot. Also the menu icon does not show.
This happens with other KDE apps as well so I do not think it is
specific to yakuake-kde4.

It seems that the full /usr/lib/kde4 path would need to be included in
kde4 .desktop entries.

[Bug 199522] Re: Dim on idle does not brighten with activity

2008-04-14 Thread Pat Double
This is still broken for me. When I am on AC and the LCD dims and I move
the mouse the undimmed value is less than full. I have not tried to
inspect or change anything in gconf-editor, but I don't think I should
need to. Using the keyboard to adjust the brightness back up works,
although a dim-undim cycle causes the brightness to be one notch less
than full again. If I should file a separate report please let me know.

[Bug 216506] [NEW] synaptic prompted to remove old kernel but did not do so

2008-04-12 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

I installed Hardy Beta and then upgraded. The kernel was upgraded and
the Update Manager prompted me to remove outdated packages, listing the
2.6.24-12 kernel. I clicked the button to remove and it appeared to do
something. However, the outdated kernel is still present in the package
manager, in /boot and in the boot loader screen.

/var/log/dpkg.log shows no attempts to remove the outdated kernel.

[Bug 216517] [NEW] blacklist of snd-intel8x0m prevents slmodem driver availability

2008-04-12 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

The black list of the snd-intel8x0m module prevents my modem from being
detected. If I comment out the blacklist entry jockey will prompt me to
install the restricted driver.

I realize there is a comment in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist stating that
it might interfere with snd-intel8x0. Is this still the case, or could
there be a way in jockey to detect cards that are supported by this
module and unblacklist if the user chooses? It took my a bit of time to
find the problem and I am very familiar with configuring linux distros,
I can't imagine a non-technical user knowing to look at
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.

[Bug 216527] [NEW] ondemand governer fails to up speed after long running nice process

2008-04-12 Thread Pat Double

When using the ondemand governer it gets into a state in which it stays
at the lowest frequency. CPU usage will not increase it. It seems to
happen when a log running niced process runs. Even after the process is

and then setting the governer back to 'ondemand'.

[Bug 213025] Re: No window-decorations in compiz with GeForce MX 460 and Hardy [while Fedora 8 worked]

2008-04-12 Thread Pat Double
I am having this same problem. I installed via Ubuntu Hardy Beta CD. I
enabled the restricted ATI driver through Hardware Drivers (jockey).
Update Manager updated compiz and replaced some packages. The reason
this is broken is that I do not have /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator. I
believe this file is part of compiz-gnome. The only packages I've
installed manually are postgresql-8.2 and powertop. I think there is
something missing in the Ubuntu UI to include compiz-gnome.

[Bug 207157] Re: dbus does not start automatically in Hardy

2008-04-11 Thread Pat Double
I performed a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.04 and beagle as follows:

1. Install Kubuntu 8.04 Beta desktop CD to a clean hard drive.
2. Use Adept to perform all updates with default repos.
3. Install package beagle.

Upon login to my KDE session the beagle log shows the same error. The
dbus address variable is not defined.

Am I correct in assuming that installing beagle and using KDE is a valid
use case and this should be fixed? It seems my above test shows it is
not a misconfiguration specific to my install.

[Bug 215140] Re: compiz wrapper script references /usr/local

2008-04-10 Thread Pat Double
I don't have the file /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager present. I did a
search on packages.ubuntu.com and could not locate the package that
contains this file. Note that this is a Hardy upgrade from Kubuntu
Gutsy. Perhaps some package is missing that Gnome would have had?

[Bug 215140] Re: compiz wrapper script references /usr/local

2008-04-10 Thread Pat Double
I did some more digging:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -S /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager
diversion by xorg-driver-fglrx from: /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager
diversion by xorg-driver-fglrx to: /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager.ubuntu
compiz-core: /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls /etc/xdg/compiz/
compiz-manager.ubuntu compiz-manager.ubuntu.dpkg-new

xorg-driver-fglrx moved the file with no replacement. Why would it do
that? I cannot run /usr/bin/compiz out of the box like that.

2008-04-10 Thread Pat Double
Yes, I have used envy. I thought uninstalling and re-installing would
fix everything. Could you please tell me how to remove the diversion
permanently from my system?

I am seriously considering re-installing Hardy from scratch after
release, I think I may have played with my install too much.

Thank you for your time.

[Bug 215100] Re: Crash reports are not displayed on kubuntu Hardy

2008-04-10 Thread Pat Double
I have both KDE3 and KDE4 installed, but I use KDE3. Even before KDE4
was installed I never have seen the dialogs. I found /var/crash while
reviewing my backup policy and traced down apport, otherwise I would
never have seen the reports.

[Bug 214677] [NEW] bitpim ownership not applied from /etc/default/bitpim

2008-04-09 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bitpim

The /etc/default/bitpim file is supposed to allow one to configure the
ownership of devices that bitpim handles. These are not being applied in
my case and therefore bitpim cannot access the phone. I tracked the
problem down to /lib/udev/bpudev. The following code snippet (lines
31-37) causes the problem.

# udev fires off a whole bunch of devices, most of which we don't need.
# By visual inspection, the one that we want has the same Kernel No and
# SYSFS{devnum}.
# XXX - this appears to fail for removals. :-/
if [ $2 != $3 ]; then
 exit 2
fi

I changed /lib/udev/bpudev to log the arguments and it turns out that no
device message has argument 2 and 3 the same. I will attach the log.

[Bug 207087] Re: Suspend doesn't work with shipped /etc/default/acpi-support (Hardy, fglrx)

I have a Mobility Radeon 9700 and suspend to RAM fails on the second

the above configuration (except for the laptop mode setting) and it did
not help.

I set /sys/power/pm_trace to 1 and got this:

[Bug 214092] [NEW] Suspend to RAM fails in second resume cycle for Hardy, fglrx, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700

2008-04-08 Thread Pat Double
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fglrx-kernel-source

I have an up-to-date Hardy install on a Dell XPS Generation 1. The video
card is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 using the restricted fglrx driver. I
can suspend to RAM with multiple cycles OK with the open source ATI
driver, but it causes other problems with my video card in relationship
to clone mode, etc. ATI claims fglrx supports suspend/resume and the
last time I tried hibernation with fglrx it worked. However, suspend to
RAM has never worked right.
