[Bug 1776686] [NEW] missing accountsservice.pc ?

2018-06-13 Thread Patrick Welche
Public bug reported:

Just tried to build gdm 3.28.2 from source on ubuntu 16.04.4.

Configure fails with:

configure: error: Package requirements (gobject-2.0 >= 2.36.0
gio-2.0 >= 2.36.0
gio-unix-2.0 >= 2.36.0
accountsservice >= 0.6.35
xcb
) were not met:

Package 'accountsservice', required by 'virtual:world', not found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

According to apt, the following are installed:

accountsservice/xenial-updates,now 0.6.40-2ubuntu11.3 amd64
[installed,automatic]
query and manipulate user account information

gir1.2-accountsservice-1.0/xenial-updates,now 0.6.40-2ubuntu11.3 amd64
[installed]
  GObject introspection data for AccountService

libaccountsservice-dev/xenial-updates,now 0.6.40-2ubuntu11.3 amd64 [installed]
query and manipulate user account information - header files

libaccountsservice0/xenial-updates,now 0.6.40-2ubuntu11.3 amd64
[installed,automatic]
query and manipulate user account information - shared libraries

Neither /usr/lib/pkgconfig nor /usr/share/pkgconfig contain accountsservice.pc
=> I am assuming that it is missing.

Yes you did ;-) You used variable NEWNAME set to "ubuntu", variable NEWUID set
to 1000, and variable DESC set to "Ubuntu".

Cheers,

[Bug 1629107] Re: rpc.yppasswdd dumps core

2016-09-30 Thread Patrick Welche
When creating a new nis user, we add a line of the form:

$NEWNAME:x:$NEWUID:1000:$DESC:/home/$NEWNAME:/bin/bash

note the x. Before updating to ubuntu 16, we would then run yppassswd to
change the password.

We found a work around: in ubuntu 16, if you replace the x with a
password, then (restart rpc.yppasswdd after it crashed) the password
change works. (no shadow file in operation)

[Bug 1611069] [NEW] missing symbols using gtkmm-3.0-dev

2016-08-08 Thread Patrick Welche
Public bug reported:

Trying ubuntu 16.04.1, and development seems hard...

Trivial test program:

$ cat app.cc
#include

int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
auto app = Gtk::Application::create(argc, argv, "uk.ac.cam.bpi.app");
Gtk::Window window;
window.set_default_size(200,200);

return app->run(window);
}
$ cat Makefile.am
bin_PROGRAMS = app
app_SOURCES = app.cc
app_CXXFLAGS = $(GTKMM_CFLAGS)
app_LDFLAGS = $(GTKMM_LIBS)
$ cat configure.ac
AC_INIT([app], [1.0])
AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR([build])
AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR([m4])
AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE([-Wall foreign])
AC_PROG_CXX
PKG_CHECK_MODULES([GTKMM],[gtkmm-3.0])
AC_CONFIG_FILES([Makefile])
AC_OUTPUT

First surprise:
Package gtkmm-3.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.

gtkmm-3.0-dev was installed using apt install, and put in
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig, so I have to set PKG_CONFIG_PATH?
Shouldn't pkg-config know that that is where -dev packages put .pc files
by default?

$ echo $PKG_CONFIG_PATH
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig

then compilation fails with:

g++ -I/usr/include/gtkmm-3.0 -I/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gtkmm-3.0/include

Puzzled as -lgtk-3 and -lglib-2.0 appear, and apt install
libgtkmm-3.0-dev seemed to install the necessary packages.

Just tried the exact same example code above on NetBSD-current/amd64,
and it succeeds with:

I don't think that this has anything to do with which version of ubuntu one is
using.

problem seems to be reported here:

suggest that it really is a USB2 camera?

[Bug 1014749] Re: can't read uvcvideo (usb video / webcams) devices

2012-07-12 Thread Patrick Welche
I bought a dirt cheap unbranded PCI USB card:

0a:00.0 USB controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82x UHCI USB 1.1
Controller (rev 50)
0a:00.1 USB controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82x UHCI USB 1.1
Controller (rev 50)
0a:00.2 USB controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 (rev 51)

Connecting the camera to it gets me a 640x480 image with cheese and
guvcview. Slightly odd:

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:09a1 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Communicate MP/S5500

Is the camera really a USB 1.1 device? (I doubt it)

So, the problem really is with the driver for Intel X79 series chipset
USB.

2012-07-07 Thread Patrick Welche
Unfortunately

Linux flotta 3.2.0-27-generic #43 SMP Sat Jul 7 15:15:28 CST 2012 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

didn't fix my bug. I still get libv4l2: error turning on stream: No
space left on device

I haven't looked at the linux drivers. I have found a problem in another
OS which may be similar in which a uvcvideo driver asks for a contiguous
chunk of memory with which to transfer the frame. As kernel memory gets
fragmented this becomes difficult until an EIO. The solution being
investigated there (seems to work) is to teach ehci's usb_mem allocator
about multiple extents (no longer need contiguous)... On the other hand
it doesn't quite feel the same, as there the first few frames are always
captured, but here I have never succeeded in capturing a single frame.

Thanks!

[Bug 1014749] Re: can't read uvcvideo (usb video / webcams) devices

2012-07-04 Thread Patrick Welche
To quote from my original bug description above:

These cameras work on other computers running 10.04 - if I had to
guess, this is the only computer I have with USB3 ports - so is it a USB
controller driver issue?

so I agree.

The other bug involves an Intel 6 series chipset, whereas this one is an
X79 series chipset. I suspect that may be why your bug shows hope in a
kernel regression for which some bissection can be done, whereas this
box doesn't work with ubuntu 10.04 either.

Just for good measure I spent a week getting windows 7 running on it,
and windows is capable of displaying a webcam image, so the hardware
isn't at fault... (I think this again points at the USB controller
driver...)

[Bug 1014749] [NEW] can't read uvcvideo (usb video / webcams) devices

2012-06-18 Thread Patrick Welche
Public bug reported:

Attempting to read /dev/video0 for USB video device gives:

libv4l2: error turning on stream: No space left on device

from the video4linux library, and the video4linux ioctl fail with e.g.

VIDIOC_STREAMON - Unable to start capture: Device or resource busy

I wrote a test program and find that Control ioctls such as
VIDIOC_G_FMT are successful: I can query the format which the camera
provides, so the connection with the camera seems OK.

Reading the frame, however seems impossible.

(cheese and guvcview are also unable to display an image, so it isn't
just my programming - and my program does work on a laptop which runs
NetBSD, so no ubuntu testing there)

I tested the following cameras
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:09a1 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Communicate MP/S5500
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0471:2038 Philips (or NXP)
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 041e:406d Creative Technology, Ltd

(I also tried with ubuntu 10.04)

Most similar bugs have been solved in the past by installing new kernels -
the above was tried with the most recent at the time of this report:
 3.2.0-25-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 23 20:30:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux

This computer has USB3 ports as well as USB2 ports - I have tried a
variety - apport should show the Logitech plugged into a USB2 port.

These cameras work on other compurters running 10.04 - if I had to
guess, this is the only computer I have with USB3 ports - so is it a USB
controller driver issue?

[Bug 839573] Re: blank main window oneric beta1 live cd - unity OK

2011-09-15 Thread Patrick Welche
I did run apport-collect from a VT (as nothing other than the dasher
icons appear, cf screenshot), and that is what I meant by terminal
windows are fine. Should have said tty? Try it out: apport-collect will
mumble about launching a browser and that's as far as it gets - yes,
from a VT.

I find please send me the log file called foo.log a perfectly
acceptible question, and exactly what I am happy to provide. (I don't
find log files a waste - I do find run this script that we hope works
everywhere a waste)

You don't mention if you have proprietary drivers Well, from the
subject of the bug, and the way to repeat: all I did was boot the beta1
CD. You tell me if it contains proprietary drivers.

FWIW I just booted an opensuse 11.4 + gnome 3 CD on said box and can use
it without problems.

No doubt you will say open another bug as this is a separate problem,
but the point of all this originally was simply to fsck a duff ext3fs
disk. The oneric beta1 cd failed to detect the SiI3124 SATALink based
sata card the disk was plugged into. Opensuse did detect it, I ran fsck,
now I can send the disk off under waranty, and I don't need to worry
about any of this any more :-)

[Bug 839573] Re: blank main window oneric beta1 live cd - unity OK

2011-09-13 Thread Patrick Welche
I have popped screenshots up at
http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/prlw1/computing/bug839573.html
which I think fit the description above.

I know all about ReportingBugs - apport-collect will fire up a web
browser and ask for confirmation. Considering the nature of this bug,
how am I meant to see the request?

Just asking me sensible questions also avoids having tons of useless
detail attached to bugs were we can't see the wood from the trees...

[Bug 839573] [NEW] blank main window oneric beta1 live cd - unity OK

2011-09-02 Thread Patrick Welche
Public bug reported:

Hard to tell if it is a duplicate of 755459. It seems to be the opposite
of 745996!

Easy to reproduce:

Boot a oneric 32-bit live CD. Terminal windows are fine. The graphical
window shows the top menubar, and left side seems to be populated. If
you move the mouse over what appear to be icon positions (just see 2
inward pointing triangles) their tool tips appear. The icons themselves
don't appear. If for instance you launch the dasher, all the icons and
the dasher window are fine. Say you run firefox from that dasher window,
the firefox menu options will all appear on the top menubar - you can
open new window, but no window appears. Nothing appears in the large
main white region (desktop?) framed by the icon list on the left margin
and the menubar at the top.

The PC has a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra (rev. 0xa1) graphics card.

[Bug 728510] Re: Version 8.83.5.1 of maintenance release uCode for Intel® 5000AGN Series Wi-Fi Adapters

2011-06-28 Thread Patrick Welche
I just upgraded some lucid boxen, saw the ChangeLog pointing to this
bug, and checked the following:

wget
http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-5000-ucode-8.83.5.1-1.tgz
tar xzvf iwlwifi-5000-ucode-8.83.5.1-1.tgz
sha1sum iwlwifi-5000-ucode-8.83.5.1/iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode
22bf6093ed8204027cc3207c739d2cab9cc92ea3
iwlwifi-5000-ucode-8.83.5.1/iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode
8d94177b509be3fb653ce8ba0c633244e4abf5f3 /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode

So the microcode at the page mentioned in the bug description is
different (or has changed in the meantime?) to the microcode which ended
up in the patch.

[Bug 800640] [NEW] gnome3-team ppa: mutter aborts

2011-06-22 Thread Patrick Welche
Public bug reported:

I am trying to use gnome 3 with ubuntu, so have installed:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3/ubuntu natty main

I believe that the reason I have no joy is because:

 mutter --replace
**
Cogl-glx:ERROR:./cogl-texture-rectangle.c:163:_cogl_texture_rectangle_set_wrap_mode_parameters:
 assertion failed: (can_use_wrap_mode (wrap_mode_s))
Abort

I assumed that this may be because clutter prefers 3D hardware
acceleration, and my graphics card is an Intel 865, i.e., not exactly
new. However, I just tried an opensuse gnome 3 live CD, and it works
(http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Medias/images/iso/GNOME_3.i686-1.3.0-Build1.3.iso)

Thoughts?

[Bug 796336] Re: 2.6.32-33-generic iwlagn firmware broken

2011-06-13 Thread Patrick Welche
I just grabbed

http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-5000-ucode-8.83.5.1-1.tgz

and was surprised to find sha1sum:

22bf6093ed8204027cc3207c739d2cab9cc92ea3
iwlwifi-5000-ucode-8.83.5.1/iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode
8d94177b509be3fb653ce8ba0c633244e4abf5f3 /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode

Replacing the package distributed microcode with the one from
intellinuxwireless didn't help. The excellent analysis in comment 4
shows why that obviously wouldn't have helped, but this suggests a third
possible error...

[Bug 796336] [NEW] 2.6.32-33-generic iwlagn firmware broken

2011-06-12 Thread Patrick Welche
Public bug reported:

With 2.6.32-32 (which is what I am using to write this using wireless, so all
of your automatic data gathering will have happened with the working kernel),
the Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100
works. After the upgrade to 2.6.32-33 it doesn't because:

2.6.32-32 iwlagn:
firmware: requesting iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode
loaded firmware version 8.24.2.12

2.6.32-33 iwlagn:
firmware: requesting iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode
Driver unable to support your firmware API. Driver supports v5, firmware is v0.
Could not read microcode: -22

Which suggests that the firmware in iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode is broken...

[Bug 637747] Re: dasher crashed with SIGSEGV in Dasher::CDasherModel::HandleOutput()

2011-01-27 Thread Patrick Welche
Comment #14 makes sense: the dasher package was compiled to use the
accessibility bus. It communicates with other programmes using it, so
that is the way it delivers characters to e.g. gedit. If the
accessibility bus is switched off, it can't. dasher can be built after
configuring with --disable-a11y to not use the accessibility bus, but to
use libXtst instead.

Comment #17 is worrying - and of course, I can't reproduce it: I just
had dasher running with the cursor all the way to the right and left it
running for over 20minutes outputting into gedit. This was on a core duo
laptop - just mentioning that given TimerEvent in your backtrace. In
the source head we have since made simplifications in that area, so
RecursiveOutput has actually already been removed, but AFAIK those
changes weren't actually bug fixes, just refactorings. What hardware
have you got? (Still assuming there is some sort of event race
condition...)

[Bug 579181] Re: Newline (¶) only selecta ble after punctuation or space

2010-09-13 Thread Patrick Welche
As you have found out, English text tends not to contain strings like
\win 1\para, so adding such strings to your training text helps. Having
Language model adapts as you write turned on and writing such strings
teaches dasher about them. And another option is to try a higher value
for smoothing (also on the Language tab in preferences). A higher
smoothing value reduces the strength of the predictions, so low
probability symbols such as the Paragraph symbol end up being allocated
a higher probability than they deserve.

(Anyway, this isn't really a dasher bug as such, so in the strict bug
sense, can be closed...)

Newer dasher has had to use gtk_show_uri to display help now, thanks to

[Bug 539814] Re: tar/gnulib bug prevents bootstraping Lucid on Dapper, causes Lucid upgrade to abort on older linux kernels (e.g. in a chroot or Xen VM)

2010-07-28 Thread Patrick Welche
I have just hit this problem upgrading from hardy 8.04 to lucid 10.04,

partially upgraded system, and a

aptitude safe-upgrade

gives

Tar version is 1.22-2, and /bin/tar is the same as the binary on another
working 10.04.1 system
gnulib is not installed - same as on another working 10.04.1 system

One difference is that the working system has:

 ldd `which tar`

whereas the broken one has:

[Bug 585853] Re: [Lucid] Not possible to use xdm, only can use gdm

2010-05-30 Thread Patrick Welche
Now I see how I was lucky in 7:

If you run gdm, kill it, then xdm will work.
Somehow gdm manages to initialise drm, ie avoids:

(EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version.
(EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master.

So simply, I had a some stage run gdm = xdm thereafter, no matter what
I tried, would work.

Any clues anyone? (This is an intel (xdriinfo says i965) which I think
means that the X driver needs kernel support. What stumps me, is that
gdm works, therefore the kernel support must be there, and the driver OK
- but what is the difference between the way gdm calls Xorg and the way
xdm calls it?)

[Bug 585853] Re: [Lucid] Not possible to use xdm, only can use gdm

2010-05-29 Thread Patrick Welche
Making Xorg setuid (with hindsight obviously) didn't change anything.

The

(WW) xf86OpenConsole: setpgid failed: Operation not permitted
(WW) xf86OpenConsole: setsid failed: Operation not permitted

of the original report is definitely the cause. Looking at a copy of
xorg I happen to have, i.e., not necessarily the one used in ubuntu, I
see that in xorg-server/dist/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/lnx_init.c, the
calls to setpgid() and setsid() are enclosed in an if(!KeepTty) block.
Adding -keeptty to /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers gets me an xdm login prompt and
avoids the hang. This isn't the answer, as -keeptty isn't meant for
usual operation, and again makes me wonder how gdm is treated
differently - as the call is made by the same server in each case.

[Bug 585853] Re: [Lucid] Not possible to use xdm, only can use gdm

2010-05-27 Thread Patrick Welche
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xdm

Bug discovered after upgrading an xdm-using 8.04.2 LTS x86_64-desktop
laptop to 10.04 LTS, but now repeated as follows.

  Take default gdm-using 10.04 LTS x86_64-desktop laptop
  aptitude install xdm
and set xdm as the default window manager
  restart

You will now see the ubuntu white/red dots animation, and that's as far as
things go.
ctrl-alt f1 gets you a log in prompt
  ps ax | grep dm
shows nothing - so this isn't the same as the both gdm and xdm run bug.

  In fact
  ps ax | grep -i x
  returns nothing.

Extras: x.org x server v 1.7.6, intel graphics controller. According to
kern.log
  fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device
  ... drm Initialized i915
vga16fb: not registering due to another framebuffer present

so things should be set for X to start, namely drm Initialized looks
  hopeful

Yet running xdm -debug 2 from vt1 shows
  ...
  /usr/bin/X :0 vt7 -nolisten tcp -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/...
(all OK)
  ...
(EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version.
 Failed to become DRM master.
failed to get resources: Bad file descriptor
 Kernel modesetting setup failed
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a useable configuration.
  Also surprising as:
  drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
   open result is 9 (OK)
  (Chipset GM45)

So, how come X thinks drm isn't setup, yet the kernel thinks it is?

  Work around: put gdm back as default with dpkg-reconfigure {gdm|xdm}

Now comparing Xorg.0.log in broken xdm and working gdm cases, xdm has:

xf86OpenConsole: setpgid failed: Operation not permitted
xf86OpenConsole: setsid failed: Operation not permitted

and later drmOpenByBusid returns nothing as opposed to pci::00:02.0

So, why the permission denied? apparmor not treating xdm as well as it
  treats gdm?

(no ubuntu-bug -p xdm included, as I am writing this on a working single-boot
NetBSD/i386 laptop)

[Bug 585853] [NEW] [Lucid] Not possible to use xdm, only can use gdm

2010-05-26 Thread Patrick Welche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdm

Bug discovered after upgrading an xdm-using 8.04.2 LTS x86_64-desktop
laptop to 10.04 LTS, but now repeated as follows.

Take default gdm-using 10.04 LTS x86_64-desktop laptop
aptitude install xdm
and set xdm as the default window manager
restart

You will now see the ubuntu white/red dots animation, and that's as far as
things go.
ctrl-alt f1 gets you a log in prompt
ps ax | grep dm
shows nothing - so this isn't the same as the both gdm and xdm run bug.

In fact
ps ax | grep -i x
returns nothing.

Extras: x.org x server v 1.7.6, intel graphics controller. According to kern.log
fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device
... drm Initialized i915
vga16fb: not registering due to another framebuffer present

so things should be set for X to start, namely drm Initialized looks
hopeful

Yet running xdm -debug 2 from vt1 shows
...
/usr/bin/X :0 vt7 -nolisten tcp -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/... (all
OK)
...
(EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version.
   Failed to become DRM master.
failed to get resources: Bad file descriptor
   Kernel modesetting setup failed
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a useable configuration.
Also surprising as:
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
 open result is 9 (OK)
(Chipset GM45)

So, how come X thinks drm isn't setup, yet the kernel thinks it is?

Work around: put gdm back as default with dpkg-reconfigure {gdm|xdm}

Now comparing Xorg.0.log in broken xdm and working gdm cases, xdm has:

xf86OpenConsole: setpgid failed: Operation not permitted
xf86OpenConsole: setsid failed: Operation not permitted

and later drmOpenByBusid returns nothing as opposed to pci::00:02.0

So, why the permission denied? apparmor not treating xdm as well as it
treats gdm?

(no ubuntu-bug -p xdm included, as I am writing this on a working single-boot
NetBSD/i386 laptop)

** Affects: xdm (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 404214] Re: jaunty cups postscript failure (hardy success)

2009-07-28 Thread Patrick Welche
Pascal, I wonder however whether you have read the bug report. Your
comment looks like a knee-jerk reaction. The error is what comes out of
the printer, not what cupsd writes in the error log. Thinking about it,
next time I am in the lab, I should try raw printing. The question
really is, if the file is correct postscript, what is cups doing to it?
It must be changing what is sent to the printer, otherwise all systems
be they hardy or jaunty should behave in the same way (as it is the same
printer with its postscript interpreter and the same postscript file in
all cases).

[Bug 404214] [NEW] jaunty cups postscript failure (hardy success)

2009-07-24 Thread Patrick Welche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

In brief same file, same printer, same HP PPD, file prints on hardy, but
doesn't with jaunty.

Grab a postscript level 2 file such as

http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~radford/ftp/mixmc.ps

Setup a HP LaserJet 4000N with default postscript driver:
*FormatVersion: 4.3
*FileVersion: 1.1.2 X
*LanguageEncoding: ISOLatin1
*LanguageVersion: English
*PCFileName: HP4000_5.PPD
*Product: (HP LaserJet 4000 Series)
*ModelName: HP LaserJet 4000 Series
*ShortNickName: HP LaserJet 4000 Series
*NickName: HP LaserJet 4000 Series Postscript (recommended)
*PSVersion: (2014.108) 1
*Manufacturer: HP

/etc/cups/lpoptions contains:
Default is2/d
Dest is2/s sides=one-sided
Dest is2/d sides=two-sided-long-edge Duplex=DuplexNoTumble
Dest is2/b sides=two-sided-long-edge Duplex=DuplexNoTumble number-up=2
page-border=single
as on hardy sides=two-sided-long-edge is recognised, but not on jaunty where
the Duplex=DuplexNoTumble is necessary (the two should be equalivent, no?)

Now lpr -P is2/b mixmc.ps. Under hardy 8.04.3 (32-bit i386 desktop), you get a
copy of an interesting paper.
Under jaunty 9.04 (tried 32-bit desktop and 64-bit server) you get

ERROR: undefined
OFFENDING COMMAND: \

STACK:

/
/bracketleft
...

(all updates current of today on all systems involved, i.e., default versions)
(other postscript files work for both - on jaunty this postscript file appears
correct when viewed with gs and gv)

** Affects: cups (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 152504] Re: system-config-printer won't accept password

2009-02-28 Thread Patrick Welche
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 302158 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/302158

I am in the (ldap) group lp_admin (not lpadmin, as that group is defined
locally, and its numerical value can differ from computer to computer),
and the computer's /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file has

SytemGroup lp_admin

Yet, I too have this infinite what is your password @localhost loop.

[Bug 125749] Re: apt-cacher clear obsolete deb packages error

2008-07-05 Thread Patrick Welche
Not solved for me on gutsy 7.10 with apt-cacher installed on Thursday 3
July 2008:

% sudo rm /var/cache/apt-cacher/packages/*Packages*gz

gzip:
/var/cache/apt-cacher/temp/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_edgy-updates_main_source_Sources.gz:
 unexpected end of file
Error processing
gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_edgy-updates_main_source_Sources.gz in
/var/cache/apt-cacher/packages, cleanup stopped.
Remove the file if the repository is no longer interesting and the packages
pulled from it are to be removed.

So, the underlying problem seems to be that edgy packages are .gz, newer
packages are .bz2, and if you have a few edgy clients edging their way
towards being updated thanks to the nice new apt-cache you get an
unhappy apt-cacher?
