[Bug 638434] Re: Freeze on Toshiba NB300 without external interrupts
Just to summarize the available options as I understand it. Maverick with no options at all doesn't boot/function without constant keypresses. With intel_idle.max_cstate=0 the system boots and functions but with enough freezes to make activities like playing music a waste of time and the system generally gets stuck during shutdown and doesn't power off. With nohz=off or setting the CPU to 'Always Low' in the BIOS the system functions normally but with reduced battery life or slower speed and reduced battery respectively. Surely this should be mentioned on the release notes for the release candidate. If people upgrade their Toshiba NB300/305/310 series laptops the systems won't boot anymore. The Lenovo S10-3 gets a section in the release notes but the Toshiba problem is surely just as serious (there just doesn't seem to be a fix on the cards as yet). -- Freeze on Toshiba NB300 without external interrupts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/638434 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 638434] Re: Freeze on Toshiba NB300 without external interrupts
Yes. That about sums it up. Without intel_idle.max_cstate=0 the system is totally frozen unless you constantly provide keypresses, mouse movements, network activity, etc. With intel_idle.max_cstate=0 the system will work but with regular enough freezes to be very frustrating. Actually I also spoke too soon. There are still freezes. The machine seems to boot fine but often won't shutdown without keypresses to help it along. [Bug 638434] [NEW] Freeze on Toshiba NB300 without external interrupts
Public bug reported: After upgrading to Maverick the computer freezes unless a key is pressed or mouse moved. On boot the screen goes blank and disk activity stops. Holding down a key like Alt allows the boot to progress and the splash screen appears. Releasing the key causes the boot process to freeze (after about 1 second) until a key is pressed and held again. It seems any key work for this process. Once booted the problem persists. Even in a VT you can see the freeze because unless keys are pressed the cursor stops flashing. Connecting to a network improves the situation and the machine freezes less often. Presumably because of the interrupts caused by the network device. For example setting up a 0.5 second ping to a remote machine seems to stop the system hanging entirely. Playing audio also demonstrates the freeze. After a few seconds the audio gets stuck in an endless loop, at least until a key is pressed. Moving the mouse also unfreezes the system, as does pressing the power button, unplugging or plugging in a USB bluetooth dongle. All this suggests to me that hardware interrupts unfreeeze the machine, otherwise it's totally frozen. Booting up with the old Lucid kernel which was left in the boot menu makes the problem go away and the system seems to run fine. I don't see anything useful in the dmesg output. At least nothing obvious. I was expecting to see things like soft lockup messages but there are none. I have also tried the mainline kernel 2.6.36-999-generic and see the same problem as the Maverick stock kernel. Adding nohz=off to the kernel commandline seems to solve the problem but apparently this ruins the battery life (I haven't run like this for long enough to find out) I hope this is enough information. I resolved it by doing sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic linux-restricted- modules-2.6.27-7-generic linux-image-generic linux-restricted-modules- generic linux-generic followed by sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic linux-restricted-modules- generic linux-generic I had to reboot and then visit the 'Hardware Drivers' tool afterwards to make it reinstall the Nvidia driver but now everything seems to be fine. -- package linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic 2.6.27-7.15 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/291209 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The people on this thread seem to be suffering the same problem http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5871839 -- [hardy] F-Spot can't adjust paper size and ignores printer setting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281670 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 281670] Re: [hardy] F-Spot can't adjust paper size and ignores printer setting
I also can't get anything to print correctly from F-Spot. I just brought home an HP Photosmart C3180. I have tried all option combinations I can imagine under F-Spot and the print config dialog and I get the exact behaviour you describe above. The printer first refuses to print because it doesn't believe the paper is the correct size. When I override this warning I get a corner printed with the rest of the image cropped off. It's as if the image hasn't been scaled down to fit. I have successfully printed using the HPLIP gui tool although this has scaled keeping the aspect ratio correct and this has resulted in white margins top and bottom. I intend to see if I can resolve this but even if I can using the HPLIP tool is a pretty horrible workaround for printing photos. This is using Hardy, I haven't tested Intrepid but the post above suggests that won't help. -- [hardy] F-Spot can't adjust paper size and ignores printer setting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281670 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238817] Re: Evince and XPDF no longer print UK Royal Mail online stamps correctly
Thanks for the speedy response! I've clearly not explained myself properly as you seem to have got the wrong end of the stick. The PDF file should render differently on screen to when it is printed. The on screen rendering should contain a 'watermark' (for want of a better word) but the printed out version shouldn't. The 'watermark' in this case is the word SAMPLE in bold written across the whole image. The previous (Gutsy) version of XPDF displayed the 'watermark' on screen but it was absent once printed. This is the correct behaviour. The current versions of both XPDF and Evince include the 'watermark' in the printed copy and this is incorrect behaviour, it should be absent. If I have still failed to explain myself this blog posting I found should make it more obvious. http://www.mealldubh.org/index.php/2008/01/30/uk-royal-mail-stamps-on-linux-lovers/ Thanks for your time. -- Evince and XPDF no longer print UK Royal Mail online stamps correctly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238817 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238817] [NEW] Evince and XPDF no longer print UK Royal Mail online stamps correctly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evince The UK Royal mail provide a service where you can print your postage online. It provides you with a PDF file which you print out and attach to your envelope. The problem is that on screen the PDF appears with SAMPLE written across the middle of it, with a note that this won't appear in the printed version. Unfortunately it does appear in the printed version making the label useless. Both Evince and XPDF as provided with Hardy exhibit this behaviour, however the version of Xpdf provided with Gutsy worked correctly (ie the label printed without SAMPLE written across it) but evince as provided with Gutsy didn't print at all. I was going to get the official Adobe Acrobat reader but there isn't a x86-64 version so that's not really a valid workaround for my machine. I have logged this against evince because I think the default PDF reader should be able to cope with these files, although I guess it's also a regression against Xpdf. Just to be clear, the royalmail site does allow you to download a sample before you pay and print the real thing, but this attachment is the final paid for version not the sample. ** Affects: evince (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Evince and XPDF no longer print UK Royal Mail online stamps correctly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238817 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 156541] Re: switching compiz viewports causes citrix ica client to be lost
Interestingly I don't find this a problem any more. Appologies for forgetting to come back and say this! This was a problem for me on Gutsy but now I'm on Hardy it's not anymore. However... I have switched to a Nvidia graphics card from an onboard intel one and I now have two monitors in twinview. I guess these changes could have made a difference. I'm also running the 64bit version of Ubuntu, although the citrix client I'm running is only available in a 32bit version. The citrix client I'm using is version 10.6.115659. I don't know which version I was running on Gutsy. I'm running the desktop cube (although only with two sides so it's more a desktop plane really) and I can switch between the sides and I don't loose my citrix windows. However I do loose my Lotus Notes running under Wine! My solution for this is to stick it on the widget layer and set it to be on all workspaces. I guess I should log the wine+compiz problem. -- switching compiz viewports causes citrix ica client to be lost https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156541 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 63418 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/63418 I've just seen this bug for the first time after upgrading to 2.6.20-16. The last thing recorded in /var/log/messages is information about the fglrx driver being loaded. For the moment I think I'm going to have to revert to the 2.6.20-15 kernel because the computer is unusable. X starts but the splash loading bar doesn't display and all disk activity stops. You can still move the mouse pointer but that's all. You can't kill X or switch to a VT. -- soft lockup detected on CPU#0! when booting from feisty-desktop-i386 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/80502 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
