[Bug 329012] Re: Add ipmisensors module to ubuntu kernel

2011-08-16 Thread Paul van Genderen
I have the same issue, can I do this? It says:

You are not the reporter of this problem report. It is much easier to
mark a bug as a duplicate of another than to move your comments and
attachments to a new bug.

Subsequently, we recommend that you file a new bug report using "apport-
bug" and make a comment in this bug about the one you file.

Do you really want to proceed?

[Bug 787316] Re: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)

2011-06-28 Thread Paul van Genderen
I get this:

The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 182094 error_code 8 request_code 15 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Not sure if it's the same bug or not. Might also be a duplicate of
#552630.

[Bug 723014] Re: New window tracking system breaks in the case where windows try to restack relative to destroyed windows that were never mapped

2011-06-06 Thread Paul van Genderen
Either this hasn't been fixed yet or there's another issue which hasn't
been properly triaged yet. It occurs rather frequently, even inside the
text box where I'm writing this comment right now. It's as if there's a
hidden-but-always-on-top U-shaped window, but it could be a box as well.
I wanted to make a screencast but I could only click the istanbul icon

[Bug 327082] Re: Totem crashes on loading files

2011-06-06 Thread Paul van Genderen
This is still an issue in Ubuntu 11.04 amd64 (fully updated) but the
request_code is different so I'm not sure if it's the same bug.

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 93 error_code 2 request_code 133 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I could not break on gdk_x_error, will look into it later.

[Bug 263837] Re: VMWare Server on kernel 2.6.27-2-generic: cannot compile vmmon module

2011-05-23 Thread Paul van Genderen
I Googled my way here too and I want to add that with kernel 2.6.38, the
minimal supported version is 3.1.4 build-385536. Older versions can be
installed but fail to compile the kernel modules. On 2.6.32, the minimal
version that should work is 3.0.1.

Old virtual machines are *not* carried over, you need to open then
manually.

[Bug 658924] Re: Synaptic hangs several minutes (de)selecting or listing packages

2011-04-22 Thread Paul van Genderen
Upon investigating this a bit further, it seems the issue has to do with
the sort column and in particular the "package in main"/supported/logo
column. When sorting with this column, synaptic behaves excruciatingly
slow. Use any other column to sort and it's back to normal.

Eric M. Smith: Please try this and see if it helps, thanks.

[Bug 658924] Re: Synaptic processing appears to be infinite loop.

2011-04-22 Thread Paul van Genderen
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

3 minutes is inherently finite, or infinitely less then infinite.
However, I can confirm this at least for 10.04 and even on a package
without dependencies. Selecting "sl" for installation took 3 minute 1s.
Also, selecting a large list such as the "All" section takes even longer
for me: 3m14. The 13 extra seconds might be the time it takes to
populate the list with the search results.

I'm attaching my /proc/cpuinfo, to Eric M. Smith: please attach your
/proc/cpuinfo as well. (You can find it under "filesystem".)

Lastly, what is this "search cache" you speak of? The only cache that's
speeding up package searches is the disk cache AFAIK.

[Bug 724206] [NEW] update-grub lists CentOS but doesn't add it to grub.cfg

2011-02-24 Thread Paul van Genderen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

After installing CentOS in an empty space on the disk without choosing
to install the boot loader (old Grub), running "update-grub" on Ubuntu
lists CentOS:

Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-3-generic-pae
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-3-generic-pae
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic-pae
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-24-generic-pae
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Found CentOS release 5.5 (Final) on /dev/sda4
done

But in /boot/grub/grub.cfg, CentOS isn't listed and doesn't show in the
menu during boot. The partition layout is as follows:

1 Primary ext4 Ubuntu /
2 Primary Extended (added by the Ubuntu installer)
3 Primary ext3 CentOS /boot
4 Primary ext3 CentOS /
5 Logical swap (shared)

By default, CentOS creates 2 partitions. One for /boot and one LVM PV
with a VG for / and swap.

I've attached the output of sfdisk -l /dev/sda and cfdisk -Ps /dev/sda.

[Bug 653910] Re: package nvidia-current 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04 failed to install/upgrade: error: unknown field ‘ioctl’ specified in initializer

2011-02-04 Thread Paul van Genderen
Here's what I did:

Remove 3 lines from /usr/src/nvidia-current-195.36.24/nv.c (see attached
diff), run `sudo dkms build -m nvidia-current -v 195.36.24`. If that
works, run `sudo dkms install -m nvidia-current -v 195.36.24`.

Now, if you're still in an X session, log out, switch to a virtual
console, log in and run `sudo service gdm stop` (or whatever dm you
happen to be running, if at all). Unload the old module if it's still
loaded (`sudo rmmod nvidia`) and load the new one with `sudo modprobe
nvidia-current`. Now run `exec sudo service gdm start`, `startx` or
whatever floats your boat. If this is too difficult, a plain restart
should suffice, too. If the package manager had errors, you can run
`sudo apt-get -f install` or `sudo dpkg --configure --pending` and it'll
run dkms for you as well. Just don't restart X until the new module is
loaded and you'll be fine.

This is using package nvidia-current version 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04.
I'll try to make a debdiff shortly.

[Bug 538839] Re: when "do-release-upgrade" aborts, no instructions are given for how to complete the upgrade

2011-01-29 Thread Paul van Genderen
My botched upgrade is actually Just Fine now. Here's what I did:

1. sudo dpkg --configure -a
2. sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
3. Then I downloaded lucid.tar.gz with wget
'http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid-proposed/main/dist-upgrader-all/current/lucid.tar.gz'
4. I extracted it in /var/tmp (warning: it dumps everything in the current
directory).
5. I commented out line 352 from DistUpgradeView.py (return False)
6. ran sudo ./lucid and let it complain ;)
7. cleaned up /var/tmp (sudo rm -rf /var/tmp/*)

Hope this helps!

[Bug 702677] [NEW] Installing openssh-blacklist removes custom blacklist

2011-01-13 Thread Paul van Genderen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openssh-blacklist

>From ssh-vulnkey(1) in package openssh-client:

>/usr/share/ssh/blacklist.TYPE-LENGTH
>If present, lists the blacklisted keys of type TYPE (“RSA” or
>“DSA”) and bit length LENGTH. The format of this file is
>described above. RSA1 keys are converted to RSA before being

>keys are computed differently, so you will not be able to find
>them in the blacklist by hand.
>
>/etc/ssh/blacklist.TYPE-LENGTH
>Same as /usr/share/ssh/blacklist.TYPE-LENGTH, but may be edited
>by the system administrator to add new blacklist entries.

I use this to blacklist (potentially) compromised or otherwise unwanted
keys. This includes anyone whose account got removed (for whatever
reason).

openssh-blacklist installs its list in the aforementioned /usr/share/ssh
directory and has no configuration files. When a custom blacklist exists
and this package is installed, it will move the file, e.g.:

>Obsolete conffile /etc/ssh/blacklist.RSA-2048 has been modified by you.
>Saving as /etc/ssh/blacklist.RSA-2048.dpkg-bak ...

These are the top two entries in the changelog:

>openssh-blacklist (0.4.1) unstable; urgency=low
>
>  * debian/openssh-blacklist{,-extra}.preinst: Correctly clean up old
>/etc/ssh blacklist entries (Closes: 483549).

The fix of this bug ( http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=483549 ) probably was correct back then; here's
the same manual page as before but from 2008 (openssh-client
1:4.7p1-8ubuntu1.2):

>/etc/ssh/blacklist.TYPE-LENGTH
>If present, lists the blacklisted keys of type TYPE (“RSA1”, “RSA”, or
> “DSA”) and bit length LENGTH.
>The format of this file is described above.

It doesn't mention /usr/share/ssh, nor does it mention anything about
editing this file. However, it seems the preinst script was never
updated to reflect the new manual page. Likely because they aren't from
the same package and these two packages have different maintainers.
Furthermore, most Debian users are unlikely to be affected by this bug
because the openssh packages on Debian recommend the blacklist packages
rather then suggesting them (to free up CD space).

[Bug 659056] [NEW] Input gone during upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10

2010-10-12 Thread Paul van Genderen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

At some point during the upgrade, I could no longer use the keyboard and
mouse. I dug up an old PS/2 Keyboard but that didn't work either.
Luckily, I was prepared for this by using screen so I could finish the
upgrade over ssh. Also, `sudo X :1` took the monitors out of sleep mode.

When I run `sudo cat /dev/input/event4` I can see garbage from the USB
keyboard and when I do that with /dev/input/event5 I see garbage from
the PS/2 keyboard. Also, /dev/input/mice shows garbage when I move the
mouse.

I also tried remoting in using vino and x11vnc but that failed,
apparently something I did caused X.org to hang in a busy loop and
clients can no longer connect. I wanted to run another X.org instance so
I ran X -configure and the command it gave me. That didn't work and I
could only kill it from another shell (^C and ^Z did nothing). The old
config wouldn't work because the nvidia kernel module is older then the
X.org driver.

I guess the steps to reproduce at this point are:
1. Install Ubuntu 10.04 and log in
2. Run `do-release-upgrade -d` and let it do its job
3. Unplug keyboard (and mouse)
4. ? (go do something else)
5. Plug keyboard back in (sorry, no profits in this procedure)

I'm not sure if 3 and 5 are neccesary but I switch between PC's using a
monitor as USB hub for my input devices.

[Bug 504771] Re: [empathy] the font and the font size cannot be changed

2010-09-02 Thread Paul van Genderen
The expected behaviour (from my POV) is that it can be changed through
Appearance Preferences. Either "Application font" or "Document font",
depending on what you consider a "document".

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2010-08-20 Thread Paul van Genderen
Assuming you've changed the resolution in startupmanager, edit the file
/etc/default/grub as root $(sudo gedit /etc/default/grub) and look for a
line that says vga=xyz, e.g.:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=" splash vga=795"

Then remove the vga argument (so it's just "splash" in this example) and
save. Now run sudo update-grub2

2010-08-20 Thread Paul van Genderen
Hi Serge,

Thank you for your insights. I did aptitude full-upgrade and was indeed
annoyed by hung apt/dpkg processes running without a terminal attached.
Also, there were whiptail processes stuck in an endless loop.

Unfortunately, the entire system kind of crashed (only ping from outside
worked) and I wasn't able to recover from this. I have no idea why, but
it's probably unrelated. I've also removed update-notifier for the time
being, but I'm not sure anymore if it had anything to do with this.

Since you've seen this before, I think it would be best to mark this one
as a duplicate.

When munin-node is removed, the configuration files are kept as usual.

[Bug 616403] [NEW] /var/log/boot.log is incomplete

2010-08-11 Thread Paul van Genderen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

On my system (running Ubuntu 10.04.1), boot logging seems to stop after quotas
are enabled. I don't see most of the boot process, including these:
 * Avahi
 * Bind
 * Cherokee
 * Cron
 * Cupsys
 * isatapd
 * Memcached
 * Mysqld
 * Postfix
 * Samba
 * Snmpd

I tried enabling bootlogd (package sysvinit-utils/initscripts), but that
has never worked for me (this is correct according to the m anual page).

Udev is complaining, but I had already removed the file it complains
about.

The release notes says "On all systems the boot output can also be found
in /var/log/boot.log.", and I've enabled the server task just in case.
Of course, Alt+F7 doesn't work on a desktop since X.org is using it.

First, I installed the package "startupmanager" (like so: sudo aptitude

set colour depth to 24 bits. Enable "Show boot splash" and press Close.
