Also, selecting a large list such as the "All" section takes even longer for me: 3m14. The 13 extra seconds might be the time it takes to populate the list with the search results. I'm attaching my /proc/cpuinfo, to Eric M. Smith: please attach your /proc/cpuinfo as well. (You can find it under "filesystem".) Lastly, what is this "search cache" you speak of? The only cache that's speeding up package searches is the disk cache AFAIK. ** Attachment added: "cpuinfo" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/658924/+attachment/2081661/+files/cpuinfo ** Summary changed: - Synaptic processing appears to be infinite loop. + Synaptic hangs several minutes (de)selecting or listing packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/658924 Title: Synaptic hangs several minutes (de)selecting or listing packages -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 653910] Re: package nvidia-current 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04 failed to install/upgrade: error: unknown field ‘ioctl’ specified in initializer
Here's what I did: Remove 3 lines from /usr/src/nvidia-current-195.36.24/nv.c (see attached diff), run `sudo dkms build -m nvidia-current -v 195.36.24`. If that works, run `sudo dkms install -m nvidia-current -v 195.36.24`. Now, if you're still in an X session, log out, switch to a virtual console, log in and run `sudo service gdm stop` (or whatever dm you happen to be running, if at all). Unload the old module if it's still loaded (`sudo rmmod nvidia`) and load the new one with `sudo modprobe nvidia-current`. Now run `exec sudo service gdm start`, `startx` or whatever floats your boat. If this is too difficult, a plain restart should suffice, too. If the package manager had errors, you can run `sudo apt-get -f install` or `sudo dpkg --configure --pending` and it'll run dkms for you as well. Just don't restart X until the new module is loaded and you'll be fine. This is using package nvidia-current version 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04. I'll try to make a debdiff shortly. ** Patch added: "e.g. root@ubuntu:/usr/src# patch -p0 < ~/Downloads/nvidia-current.diff" https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/653910/+attachment/1829452/+files/nvidia-current.diff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/653910 Title: package nvidia-current 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04 failed to install/upgrade: error: unknown field ‘ioctl’ specified in initializer -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I use this to blacklist (potentially) compromised or otherwise unwanted keys. This includes anyone whose account got removed (for whatever reason). openssh-blacklist installs its list in the aforementioned /usr/share/ssh directory and has no configuration files. When a custom blacklist exists and this package is installed, it will move the file, e.g.: >Obsolete conffile /etc/ssh/blacklist.RSA-2048 has been modified by you. >Saving as /etc/ssh/blacklist.RSA-2048.dpkg-bak ... These are the top two entries in the changelog: >openssh-blacklist (0.4.1) unstable; urgency=low > > * debian/openssh-blacklist{,-extra}.preinst: Correctly clean up old >/etc/ssh blacklist entries (Closes: 483549). > > -- Kees Cook Thu, 29 May 2008 09:37:50 -0700 > >openssh-blacklist (0.4) unstable; urgency=low > > * Relocate blacklists to /usr/share/ssh (Closes: #481283). > > -- Kees Cook Wed, 28 May 2008 11:36:00 -0700 The fix of this bug ( http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=483549 ) probably was correct back then; here's the same manual page as before but from 2008 (openssh-client 1:4.7p1-8ubuntu1.2): >/etc/ssh/blacklist.TYPE-LENGTH >If present, lists the blacklisted keys of type TYPE (“RSA1”, “RSA”, or > “DSA”) and bit length LENGTH. >The format of this file is described above. It doesn't mention /usr/share/ssh, nor does it mention anything about editing this file. However, it seems the preinst script was never updated to reflect the new manual page. Likely because they aren't from the same package and these two packages have different maintainers. Furthermore, most Debian users are unlikely to be affected by this bug because the openssh packages on Debian recommend the blacklist packages rather then suggesting them (to free up CD space). $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Release:10.04 $ apt-cache policy openssh-blacklist openssh-blacklist: Geïnstalleerd: 0.4.1 Kandidaat: 0.4.1 Versietabel: *** 0.4.1 0 500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ** Affects: openssh-blacklist (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/702677 Title: Installing openssh-blacklist removes custom blacklist -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 659056] [NEW] Input gone during upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg At some point during the upgrade, I could no longer use the keyboard and mouse. I dug up an old PS/2 Keyboard but that didn't work either. Luckily, I was prepared for this by using screen so I could finish the upgrade over ssh. Also, `sudo X :1` took the monitors out of sleep mode. When I run `sudo cat /dev/input/event4` I can see garbage from the USB keyboard and when I do that with /dev/input/event5 I see garbage from the PS/2 keyboard. Also, /dev/input/mice shows garbage when I move the mouse. I also tried remoting in using vino and x11vnc but that failed, apparently something I did caused X.org to hang in a busy loop and clients can no longer connect. I wanted to run another X.org instance so I ran X -configure and the command it gave me. That didn't work and I could only kill it from another shell (^C and ^Z did nothing). The old config wouldn't work because the nvidia kernel module is older then the X.org driver. I guess the steps to reproduce at this point are: 1. Install Ubuntu 10.04 and log in 2. Run `do-release-upgrade -d` and let it do its job 3. Unplug keyboard (and mouse) 4. ? (go do something else) 5. Plug keyboard back in (sorry, no profits in this procedure) I'm not sure if 3 and 5 are neccesary but I switch between PC's using a monitor as USB hub for my input devices. Hi Serge, Thank you for your insights. I did aptitude full-upgrade and was indeed annoyed by hung apt/dpkg processes running without a terminal attached. Also, there were whiptail processes stuck in an endless loop. Unfortunately, the entire system kind of crashed (only ping from outside worked) and I wasn't able to recover from this. I have no idea why, but it's probably unrelated. I've also removed update-notifier for the time being, but I'm not sure anymore if it had anything to do with this. Since you've seen this before, I think it would be best to mark this one as a duplicate. -- package samba-common 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: subproces installed post-installation script gaf een foutwaarde 1 terug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/619773 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 616404] [NEW] package munin-node 1.4.4-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subproces installed post-installation script gaf een foutwaarde 1 terug
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: munin When munin-node is removed, the configuration files are kept as usual. But the upstart job is never disabled, so upstart keeps trying to run munin-node even though it's not installed. This causes an error in the post-installation script when it's reinstalled. [Bug 616403] [NEW] /var/log/boot.log is incomplete
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: plymouth On my system (running Ubuntu 10.04.1), boot logging seems to stop after quotas are enabled. I don't see most of the boot process, including these: * Avahi * Bind * Cherokee * Cron * Cupsys * isatapd * Memcached * Mysqld * Postfix * Samba * Snmpd I tried enabling bootlogd (package sysvinit-utils/initscripts), but that has never worked for me (this is correct according to the m anual page). Udev is complaining, but I had already removed the file it complains about. The release notes says "On all systems the boot output can also be found in /var/log/boot.log.", and I've enabled the server task just in case. Of course, Alt+F7 doesn't work on a desktop since X.org is using it. ** Affects: plymouth (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- /var/log/boot.log is incomplete https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/616403 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver
Here's what I did (worked for me): First, I installed the package "startupmanager" (like so: sudo aptitude install startupmanager). It should appear in the Gnome menu under System > Administration > StartUp-Manager. From there, select a resolution and set colour depth to 24 bits. Enable "Show boot splash" and press Close. -- Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/563878 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
