[Bug 1288572] Re: Nvidia driver does not work in Ubuntu GNOME trusty "14.04" (Optimus laptop)

2014-05-25 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
What does "Fix Released" mean?

I just finished a fresh clean install of ubuntu-gnome, and I hit this bug.
If I install the nvidia-331 drivers, then I cannot login to my laptop any more.

The fix in #77 didn't work for me :(

So, what exactly has been released? which new packages?

Thanks

2010-06-02 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
Console switching with Ctr+Alt+F? doesn't work, I have tried this many times.
I have no screen saver active. I just ask for the screen to go blank when
inactive.

I don't know what REISUB is. Please explain and I'll test it.

I run my desktop with Compiz effects set to "normal". I will test with
compiz disabled and I'll report back.

[Bug 584407] [NEW] [Intel G35 on P5E-VM Mobo] No output on VGA port after idle period

2010-05-22 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Problem Description
-
In pre-Lucid days, up to Karmic, I've always been able to move my monitor out
of sleep mode by moving the mouse or pressing any key. I can't do that anymore
after I upgraded the system to Lucid LTS 10.04. Following an idle period on my
PC, and after the monitor goes into sleep mode, I can't get any more video
output on my VGA port, no matter what I do.

The computer remains alive however, I can ssh into it from another
machine and work with it normally. Using this remote terminal I can
restart GDM and I can hear the PC working and the "drumming" noise of
GDM starting, but there is no video output. The only way to get it back
is by rebooting the computer.

Solution
--
Following Ubuntu's "troubleshooting xorg freezes" guide, I added the line

Option "DPMS" "Off"

to the monitor section of my xorg config file and everything is fine
now, well, without the DPMS feature :-(

Other Info:
-
Bug #509186 reports a similar problem with the G35 chip set. However, I see no
errors in my Xorg log files.

2009-11-28 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
Well, I just realized that you don't need to create a symlink. Instead

sudo touch /etc/apparmor.d/disable/usr.bin.evince
sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor restart

should be sufficient.

[Bug 447292] Re: AppArmor does not allow access when @{HOME} is not /home

2009-11-28 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
Well, the @{HOMEDIRS} trick didn't work for me. My home directory is in
a NFS share "/net/aires/homes" so I changed tunables/home to read

@{HOMEDIRS}=/home/ /net/aires/homes/

and followed the change with

sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor restart

... and still the evince PDF reader was getting denied access to my home
directory.

My only solution was to disable the evince profile:

cd /etc/apparmor.d/disable
sudo ln -s /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.evince
sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor restart

Now evince works well (I can print again!)

[Bug 403408] Re: Grub 2 problem, error: no such device

2009-11-08 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
It just happened to me. ACER Ferrari 3400 laptop, an old one running
8.04 before. I decided to install everything anew, just Ubuntu, no other
OS on the hard drive. I ended up editing /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib
as suggested in this thread to fix the problem.

This is a really annoying bug with karmic. And I agree, why not give
this bug a high priority? In fact, I just noticed that it hasn't even
been assigned to anyone yet!

[Bug 269611] Re: intrepid ibex - xorg fails to load psb module: (EE) module ABI major version (1) doesn't match the server's version (4)

2008-10-23 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
I'm testing a prototype Atom-based tablet PC to see if we can get Ubuntu
running on it. 8.04.1 handles the display well but fails to detect the
hard drive. 8.10 beta detects the hard drive but fails to load X :-(

Any chance this is going to be fixed before 8.10 release? The little
activity here tells me that the answer is no, but I just want to ask.

Is there any additional information that may be required to address this
bug?

2008-10-08 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
My machine still freezes often but my hopes for the LTS status of 8.04

I hope that https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-

to be fixed.

Any updates on the fix for the Intel driver? Will it be part of

[Bug 38915] Re: Logout proces hangs

2008-10-08 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
If by the ATI driver being "the one confirmed [to] cause of this
problem" you mean the *only* one to be confirmed to cause this problem
then please take a look at bug 229043. That bug deals with the same
problem on an Intel G35-base mother board. Even though the title of the
bug reads "freezing when shutting down" it is in fact about "freezing
when logging out". It's not closed yet unfortunately.

The Intel driver has also been identified to have this problem (see
comment 41) in the bug report. I hope this will get fixed soon in the
light of the LTS label of the 8.04 release.

I'm being hit by this bug during my testing of Intrepid's beta-1 image.
This should be considered a regression since the 8.04.1 live CD has no

[Bug 229043] Re: System freezes when login out

2008-05-11 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
Marcelo,

Attached you will find the xorg config file that I use to force the VESA
driver to load.

1. For the BusID value in the "Device" section use the command "lspci"
and look for the ID associated with the "VGA compatible controller", or
something similar.

2. In the "Monitor" section update the frequency values to match your
monitor, or for testing purposes I believe you can just comment them
out.

It would be interesting to see if the freeze dissapears for you as well
using the VESA driver.

[Bug 229043] Re: System freezes when login out

2008-05-11 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
I'm connected via VGA only. Support for the HDMI port still needs work
by the X team, but that's another story.

Attached you will find the files you requested. Note the following:

~$ cat kern.log |grep -c segfault
10

GDM seems to be crashing ... but only when using the Intel driver.

I installed the XDM window manager to test the logout process. It didn't
crash the first time I logged out. However for some weird reason I
cannot login again (I get the login window again after attempting to
login for the second time). Tried with other user accounts and the same
happened, I was able to login/logout once ... but not a single crash,
which is good.

Let me know if you want me to run any other tests.

Thanks.

[Bug 229043] Re: System freezes when login out

2008-05-10 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
Jean-Baptiste,

You are assuming that this bug is somehow related to ACPI but I believe
it is not. As I said in my original message, changing my xorg.conf file
to use the VESA driver eliminates the problem. I just tried again login
in and out 10 times in a row and my PC never froze. I can't do the same
when the Intel driver is loaded.

But I did the excercise of booting with "acpi=off" anyways. I'm sorry to
say that it doesn't change anything for me. My PC still freezes upon
logout.

[Bug 229043] [NEW] System freezes when login out

2008-05-10 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
Public bug reported:

This bug report started as a comment in the thread associated with bug
38915 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/38915), but as suggested
by Sitsofe Wheeler I'm opening a new bug report here.

Problem: 7 out of 10 times my PC freezes when I logout from my Ubuntu
session. I get a black screen and my LCD says that there is no video
input. Ctrl+Backspace and Ctrl+Alt+Del keyboard salutes don't work, and
remote ssh sessions into my machine die; the only way out is a hard
reset of my PC. As far as I can say nothing is logged in either the
syslog or the X log files.

Environment:
  * Ubuntu 8.04 running on an ASUS P5E-VM mother board with the Intel G35
(3500) chipset and 2 GB of RAM.
  * My home directory is not local but NFS-mounted from another machine running
Ubuntu server 8.04.
  * My xorg.conf file is the barebones one created by running "sudo
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg"; it
has no mention of a specific driver or monitor details; I guess these days
everything X-related is found
 dynamically as X takes over.
  * My PC was upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy. While on Gutsy, my video chipset
was not well supported, I
couldn't enable desktop effects for example, but I never experienced these
freezes.

Things that I have done include:

1. Booted Hardy with the Feisty kernel. No changes.
2. Created a brand new user with a local home directory (not NFS-mounted) and
tried login in and out. No changes.
3. Tried turning off desktop effects. No changes
4. Modified my xorg.conf file to force X to use the VESA driver ... success, no
more freezes after logout.

Of course with this last option I get a sub-optimal desktop but this
makes me conclude that the problem is X-related. My first call would be
to blame the new Intel driver in xorg.

2008-04-29 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
I just upgraded to Ubuntu Hardy and found myself in the same situation.
After I logout my computer freezes and my only way out is a hard reset.
Things that I have done include:

1. Booted Hardy with the Feisty kernel. No changes.
2. Created a brand new user and tried login in and out. No changes.
3. Modified my xorg.conf file to force X to use the VESA driver ... success, no
more freezes after logout.

Of course with this last option I get a sub-optimal desktop but this
makes me conclude that the problem is X-related. My first call would
have been to blame the new Intel driver in xorg since I have an ASUS
P5E-VM mother board with the Intel G35 (3500) chipset. But several
people report the same problem with non-Intel chipsets/boards so the
problem is probably deeper than that, but definitevely X-related.

[Bug 61211] Re: "Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them in the Multimedia settings." is a really unhelpful error message

2007-11-03 Thread Pedro I. Sanchez
This may sound silly but I was hit by this annoying error message until
I enabled "Software Sound Mixing (ESD)" under
System->Preferences-->Sound-->Sounds Tab. The sound recorder didn't work
for me without this option. Now everything is fine!

Using Gutsy!
