A footnote to my comment #36 above: Just installed LO4.0.1 from http://www.libreoffice.org/download as before, and can report that the icons which appear in the Unity launcher and the Application Switcher are much improved. Not perfect, though - successive programs of whatever filetype are marked as being of the same type as the first file to be opened, but it seems functional. [Bug 739184] Re: [Libreoffice] Mnemonics do not work in Unity
For those who need menemonics (alt+...) but are not fussed about the HUD, this might be an acceptable workaround (on Quantal, certainly; might well work on Precise and Raring). It's the best solution I have found. Removed/purged LibreOffice, and then installed LibreOffice4 from http://www.libreoffice.org/download, NOT a version packaged for Ubuntu/Unity. This is how things stand now: DO work: - Looks as intended! Since this version is (I presume) unaware of Unity, there is no global menu integration attempted, so libreoffice-gtk does not need to be removed (which ruined the appearance and broke things) - Mnemonics work perfectly! DON'T work: - HUD does not work for LO4 (of course, but works for other applications) - Yet another version of incorrect icons appearing in the Unity Launcher bar ('XSLT-based filters' with a '?' icon appears in place of specific LO icons) I now use the Compiz Ring Switcher in place of the Unity application switcher, so am less dependent on the icons being meaningful (though I did change the XSLT-based filters icon for a default LO one, which is a subtle improvement). Hope someone finds that helpful. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/739184 Title: [Libreoffice] Mnemonics do not work in Unity To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/739184/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 739184] Re: [Libreoffice] Mnemonics do not work in Unity
Just confirming this affect me as well on 12.10, 64 bit. Removing libreoffice-gtk leaves such an unappealing environment to work in I choose to remove all global menus (sudo apt-get remove indicator- appmenu). I use menemonics in all applications - especially in LibreOffice. THe HUD is a nice idea, and one I was looking forward to, but in practice I have never once used it. A fully working menu with mnemonics is absolutely essential, and would be my #1 priority.
[Bug 1069898] Re: regression: cannot open network scanner with error "unable to read device-id ret=-1"
@Damian I presume you used Andrea's ppa. She sent me a .deb which I installed instead of the libsane-hpaio in the Quantal hplip package. It worked for me and Piedro and I've had no further problems. [Bug 1021693] Re: gtkpod window does not fit correctly in unity when maximized
Sorry to report that this bug is not fixed in Quantal. With Global Menus, the visibility of the Left Hand pane of the dock arrangment needs to be much wider than necessary (about a third of the window width) to avoid losing its LH side. This seems to be the opposite of what is required - the RH side should be lost in a narrow pane configuration (but would therefore be visible using scrollbars - which are not available if the LH side disappears). However, because of problems with Libreoffice integration, I prefer not to use global menus for the moment (sudo apt-get remove indicator- appmenu, logout/in). In this situation, *in addition* to the problem described above, although the menus themselves fit the space available, the window itself spills over beneath the Unity launcher, or off the available window. Not sure if my attachment(s) are attached, but the problem is easy to see. ** Attachment added: "gtkpod-without_global_menus_maximised.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtkpod/+bug/1021693/+attachment/3429381/+files/gtkpod-without_global_menus_maximised.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1021693 Title: gtkpod window does not fit correctly in unity when maximized To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtkpod/+bug/1021693/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1064962] Re: [SRU] Global menubar items do not work when opening a document directly from nautilus with no LibreOffice instance running
I have added Luc's ppa as in #99 above and can confirm that menus can now be accessed in pre-existing documents opened from Nautilus, Dash etc. However, comment #103 goes too far in saying 'libreOffice Global Menu now works perfectly': The menu can be accessed *only* by using the pointing device or 'indicator menu' shortcut (Alt+F10 is the default, I think), which leaves two problems (related, I imagine) remaining: 1) Pressing ALT (with or without a shortcut key) fails to show the menu 2) HUD does not function within LO These problems seem to apply to any LO documents - whether new or opened from Nautilus, etc. Not being able to use ALT to show the menu is a major stumbling block for me, since it breaks the system-wide pattern of menus and shortcuts, which is by far the fastest way to to do frequent tasks. Back to my preferred workaround (sudo apt-get remove indicator-appmenu). Although that denies me the use of HUD in *all* applications (since the global menus issue is still unresolved), I can use Alt-based shortcuts in LO, which is more important. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1064962 Title: [SRU] Global menubar items do not work when opening a document directly from nautilus with no LibreOffice instance running To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bamf/+bug/1064962/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry to hear that. I've looked in Synaptic and it shows the installed version as '3.12.6-3ubuntu4', so the system has installed the @hotzeplot file 'believing' it to be a reinstallation of the repo's one. I see that yours reports it as coming from a ppa (3.12.6-3ubuntu4ppa1) - does that mean you added Andrea's ppa as a software source? [Bug 1069898] Re: regression: cannot open network scanner with error "unable to read device-id ret=-1"
@Piedro Hi. I'm fairly sure I uninstalled ALL versions of hplip, then installed only the version in the repos - not the website version. I used gdebi (if you've not got it, get it from the repos - it is a far quicker way of installing .debs) to install Andrea's .deb. It pointed out that I was RE-installing that package, but let me do so without further complaint. Since it bears the same version number as the one in the repos, I have had no problems updating etc. I wonder if you are still using the website version of hplip (3.12.10a)? If so, Andrea's version of libsane-hpaio (3.12.6) would appear to the package manager as an outdated version, and could be the cause of the errors. [Bug 1026426] Re: LibreOffice Unity integration (launcher and switcher) is broken
@Francisco: Exactly! How much revenue has Canonical lost through driving away users over the past year or more? How much would it have cost them to pay a programmer for a few days work to fix this? @Marcos: BTW, Quantal works reliably with LO - *as long as you disable global menus for all applications*; otherwise there are still major problems. However, if you can live with no global menus, it is very slick. @Anybody: Is there a place where we can vent this frustration usefully - where someone from Canonical will read it and perhaps take note? [Bug 1026426] Re: LibreOffice Unity integration (launcher and switcher) is broken
This comes too late for me - I upgraded to Quantal recently, mostly in the hope of this bug being fixed. To my immense relief, it was, but in Quantal there is another extremely critical bug combined with other serious problems. (Fortunately, however, in Quantal there is a workaround: disable global menus in ALL applications, but that is a small price to pay for actually being able to Get Things Done.) I know this is not the place for making complaints (particularly since I am no longer using Precise), but in response to #101 and #39, I agree, and find it inexcusable that such critical bugs have been allowed to persist for so long (and that in QQ, equally serious bugs should appear in a new release). However, there is a general point: Ubuntu makes lofty claims about its being user-friendly, better, slicker, faster and - wow - free. However, a lot of money is put into the project (and I am very grateful - don't get me wrong), but some of it, at least is clearly misdirected. If volunteer-programmers do not have the time or skill to fix these absolutely *critical* bugs (affecting EVERY user, remember - even Mark Shuttleworth, unless he uses a Mac...), then a tiny portion of that money should be invested to sort these things out - BEFORE a new release goes live, or within a few days of release at the latest. I speak as a deeply-committed fan of Ubuntu, but I am embarassed by this state of affairs, simply cannot recommend it to others (I used to, daily), and spend too much of my time attempting to fix things I do not have the technical ability to solve. Unless the attitude towards reliability in core applications changes, it will continue to be a case of: free, as in 'free to waste your time tinkering and writing bug reports'. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026426 Title: LibreOffice Unity integration (launcher and switcher) is broken To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bamf/+bug/1026426/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Apologies - I think my remarks about the visibility of the menus hold true, but I am experiencing cases where a previously existing document (opened as the FIRST document from within the LO 'White Window' ), displays menus which although VISIBLE, do not FUNCTION... The workaround MAY be to open a blank document in the first instance, THEN open an existing one in any manner you choose. @Lance: Even where the menus are gone to pot, I have had no difficulty simply saving my changes using Ctrl+S. That should be much less cumbersome than creating new documents all the time. I really hate to moan, but I cannot be alone in finding this excruciatingly embarrasing (never mind tedious)... [Bug 1069898] Re: regression: cannot open network scanner with error "unable to read device-id ret=-1"
I finally got it working, although apt complains. Andrea Rota does in fact give the solution above, though I missed it as well: "if i downgrade this single package to libsane- hpaio_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_amd64 from Precise i can scan ok" I found a copy of that file (here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise- updates/amd64/libsane-hpaio/download), but then ran into difficulties installing it. Synaptic or Apt either forced me to remove the other HP files (hplip and dependencies), or if I installed this file alone, they then insisted that this file be upgraded to the latest version - which was not the point. The answer, I eventually discovered, is to have hplip fully installed, THEN force the installation of this single .deb, using the command: sudo dpkg -i libsane-hpaio_3.12.2-1ubuntu3.1_amd64.deb During the process you have to choose between keeping the later version or insist (correctly) on installing this apparently dodgy earlier one. In fact, I did this after running the latest version of HPLIP (which I downloaded from here: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip- web/install/install/index.html). I'm not sure if I gained anything using this latest version (which probably only supports more printer models, rather than offering more features - though it does offer installation of fax facilities, which is not something I have had before), but do note that if you try it, it requires that an existing version of HPLIP be already installed. [Bug 1064962] Re: Global menubar items do not work when opening a document directly from nautilus with no LibreOffice instance running
To help those needing to have a reliable workaround, it is this: If NO Libreoffice documents are currently open, ensure that you open an EXISTING file from the general LibreOffice 'White Window'. Then the menus should be displayed. This works for me, whereas minimising restoring etc. produce no benefit. In case this is of help tpo those searching for the bug, I think the problem can be distilled thus: Two scenarios - A) If first LO document to be opened already EXISTS, menus will NOT be displayed. Subsequent documents (even of other LibreOffice types) WILL display menus. B) If first document opened is a NEW document, opening further EXISTING documents of the same type will force the first to close (with the offer to save it if file contents have changed) but the menus will then be displayed for all remaining LO documents. NB: Opening an EXISTING document from within the general LO 'White Window' causes menus to be visible in that and subsequent documents. Opening an EXISTING file from within a NEW document (of any type) seems to behave in the same way (with a curiously low importance given to the new document involved). General: Once things have gone wrong, and menus are hidden, etc, the icons already pinned to the Unity Launcher start to show a variety of bizarre results on right-clicking (Calc even showed up as a launcher for a Launchpad version of a browser window...), offering to be locked to the Launcher when they are already etc. With the workaround above, LO is usable. However, Alt STILL fails to bring down the application menus... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1064962 Title: Global menubar items do not work when opening a document directly from nautilus with no LibreOffice instance running To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bamf/+bug/1064962/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

To be honest, I didn't check for the 'schema' complaints when I re- checked 2.1.1, but the instant crashing when adding folders or selecting preferences was still very much the case. I would recommend trying to compile the source code, which is to be found at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gtkpod/files/gtkpod/. Never having successfully compiled anything before, I found the pages whose links I posted on 2012-06-14 very helpful (esp. the first two). Use the Synaptic Package Manager to install the various packages required to get the plugins to work. The versions of libraries etc. ending with '-dev' seem to be required for this purpose. I can't remember exactly which packages I installed (it was late...), but I followed my hunches at each stage - you get quite a lot of feedback at the end of the './configure' process. If I knew how to create a .deb I would post it here, but my level of expertise is not quite up to that. @High Tech: I'm happy to post anything useful, but am not sure precisely what you need. I have been compiling the program in /usr/local/src/gtkpod-2.1.2versionxxx (running the commands (all sudo): ./configure, then make, then make install). Compressing the directory gives a tarball of around 15MB, which I attach. If you need another version, or something else, let me know. I have compiled all the recent releases, and am using the version from June 12th. It crashes not infrequently, but this could be due to the fact that I only now have got the internal player working (based on Gnome Player, which was previously missing from my system), and so could well be the culprit. The instructions I followed for preparing my system for the compiling were from: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo and http://gtkpod.wikispaces.com/Compiling+and+Installing and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingSoftware I had trouble working out which dependencies were needed for the various plugins, but have finally managed to get most working. [Bug 842566] Re: Libreoffice and unity integration broken.
Success at last :). I installed all three debs and now the bamfdaemon runs. The problem before was that after killing the daemon, the (first) replacement version of bamfdaemon had been quite simply failing to start, so it's not suprising that no window management was functioning. I note that when I compiled the daemon myself it was 541.2KB in size (the same as the file I first downloaded from Paolo Stivanin, so apparently correct), but the latest one now residing on my system is much smaller, at 134.8KB, which is far closer in size to the original version of bamfdaemon (130.7KB). Very glad to have this working. Still cannot see what I might previously have done to break anything, though. Out of interest, I reverted the changes (result: system still working) and then installed ONLY the bamfdaemon*.deb. That gave me a working system, so the problem clearly lay with the intermediate (514.2KB) version of bamfdaemon, which would not start. I have since installed all three debs again to be on the safe side. [Bug 842566] Re: Libreoffice and unity integration broken.
I don't think I have any unusual localisations, but this is much wider problem: it's not just in LO that window titles are missing when using the updated bamfdaemon- it's in ALL applications (along with app- switcher not working and window buttons missing), and the system is made absolutely unusable. (Do have a look at my previous post on what works and what does not. Essentially, using the old daemon everything worked, and with the updated one nothing does.) I am reluctant to make major changes I cannot easily undo, but let me know exactly which packages to add and I'll have a go. As mentioned before, the problem (LO not appearing in launcher, etc.) had pretty much gone away, but I had news of your fix, so I checked it out. Verdict = utterly broken, rather than fixed, I am afraid. Very grateful for all efforts at fixing this, of course. However, I have experienced a general improvement recently, possibly combined with the loss of the globalmenu in LO (it is now back in the traditional place - by design?). [Bug 842566] Re: Libreoffice and unity integration broken.
Disappointed footnote to my post above: CORRECTION! Despite that all being the case earlier this morning, ALL LO documents (MS or OpenDoc.) now fail to appear in the App Switcher and the Unity Launcher. Sorry about that. [Bug 842566] Re: Libreoffice and unity integration broken.
MS v. OpenDocument filetypes (with workaround): I find that behaviour is different for .ods and .xls / .xlt files I can confirm Xavier Guillot's experience (post 1). Here are some detailed observations of my own - all involving LO 3.4.3, CALC, on Oneiric 64bit, Unity 3D. These relate to applications listed as running in both the Application Switcher (and the instances of their open files) and the Unity Launcher In GENERAL (there could be exceptions): 1) MS .xls and .xlt file types are usually shown correctly, with GREEN CALC icon 2) Open Document .ods files are almost always identified by a general WHITE (general) LibreOffice icon (v occasionally by the green icon, which is correct). They rarely show up at all *when opened first* (before any other LO document). IF one does, it is when the file is opened very shortly (less than 10s or so) after closing the last LO document - i.e. before the application has completely closed. 3) if an .xls or .xlt file is already open, an .ods file has a hugely increased chance of being shown, but always(?) under a WHITE LibreOffice icon 4) When an .ods document is not listed at all, both the window buttons and title are missing from the menu bar. Further tests show that LO WRITER documents follow a similar pattern (.doc = good, .odt = bad), although the application (IF listed) is always shown as the BLUE icon, rather than the general white one. Apologies for tedious detail, but I hope this helps point someone towards a solution. WORKAROUNDS: 1) You can get to an unlisted file using super+W, and close it with alt+F4, Ctrl+Q or through the file menu. and finally... 2) If I am right about .xls and .doc files get listed correctly, the (temporary) solution is to use MS rather than native Open Document filetypes. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/842566 Title: Libreoffice and unity integration broken. [Bug 868400] Re: Synaptics touchpad stops working
My 2 pennyworth: Wishing to extend the time syndaemon disables the touchpad, I configured a 'startup application' consisting of "syndaemon -i 2 -d -K -t ". The option to 'disable the mouse when typing' (in the mouse settings) was still checked, and as soon as I started typing, the cursor froze. System monitor showed 2 instances of syndaemon running, which seems to have been the issue. Fixed it by unchecking the 'mouse setting option', leaving my startup command to do the job alone. Seems OK so far. Does ANYONE know where the default settings for syndaemon can be changed, avoiding this workaround? I cannot find them anywhere! PS Possibly relevant is that the cursor (using a touchpad) froze both times I started Oneiric for the first time after a clean install. A USB mouse worked fine, and the problem went away on second start up each time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/868400 Title: Synaptics touchpad stops working To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/868400/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 367822] Re: resume (after suspend) broken on ASUS W3V - Jaunty
Sorry, no news of any kind from me - I have decided to stick with 8.10 for the life of this laptop and to remember to check that any future machines I buy do not have ATI graphics. -- resume (after suspend) broken on ASUS W3V - Jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367822 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 367822] Re: resume (after suspend) broken on ASUS W3V - Jaunty
That is interesting, and will no doubt be useful to the people who might be able to provide a solution to this. It would seem that either we have different problems, or, IF we have the same problem, it is not directly caused by the new ATI graphics driver. (Incidentally, I am not certain that suspend/resume was reliable in versions earlier than 8.10, as I moved to Ubuntu full-time only last summer, and cannot be sure that my earlier experiments tested the suspend feature.) I am at the limits of my expertise, now. [Bug 367822] Re: resume (after suspend) broken on ASUS W3V - Jaunty
** Description changed: ASUS W3V laptop - suspend/resume regression Resuming from suspend results in completely blank screen, keyboard useless. Have to shutdown using power button. Happens every time. Hibernate/resume works reliably. Have been using Ubuntu since 7.04, and suspend/resume has worked until now. Upgraded to the finished release of Jaunty but was given warning that some system degradation might be expected since "3rd party graphics drivers were not compatible with this release" (or some such). Google Earth is now broken, which is consistent with that warning, but I am not qualified to know whether this resume issue is related to the graphics driver. I have not experience the faster boot times that are reported (they seem as before under 8.10), though probably not related to this problem. 'System Information' seems to give too far much info. Please let me know what is needed. Without a fix for this, I'll have to go back to 8.10 P + + UPDATE May 6th: Have dug around for likely causes, and suspect a + graphics driver problem. At the failed 'resume' various combinations of + keys (function keys, control, etc) cause the screen to light up, go + purple, grainy etc, but not create any discernible image. + + The Graphics card is reported as: + "VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M24 1P [Radeon Mobility X600]" + which is on the ATI 'older and no-longer-supported' cards list (i.e. condemned). The proprietary driver, which works just fine with 8.10, is NOT compatible with 9.04 (hence the warning before upgrading). I have reverted to 8.10 until an Open Source driver is sorted out which works with 9.04. -- resume (after suspend) broken on ASUS W3V - Jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367822 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
