[Bug 695842] Re: Cannot install on HP Proliant DL385 G7 - dual RAID controllers

2011-01-13 Thread Peter Matulis
Same for the Maverick test.

Note that CentOS 5.4 installs fine using both controllers as well as
using LVM and MD.

[Bug 695842] Re: Cannot install - unable to execute installed post-installation script: Permission denied

2011-01-12 Thread Peter Matulis
Upon further testing with scenarios with permutations on the following:

- installation to disks involving one or two controllers
- inclusion of LVM
- inclusion of MD (software RAID)

my hypothesis is that the installer is simply getting confused by the
dual controllers.

Some observations:

a) When installing to disk involving one or both controllers and a
combination of LVM and MD then package installation fails.

b) When installing to disk involving both controllers and no LVM nor MD
then package installation succeeds but the system does not boot (which I
presume is because GRUB installation failed).

c) When installing to disk involving a single controller (2 test
installs; RAID 0 and RAID 6) and no LVM nor MD then both package and
GRUB installation succeeds. Still, the installer detects controllers in
wrong order and complains.

I am working on getting the partman syslog installer logs to the last
scenario.

Other info:

I've also hit this ('partman-lvm/device_remove_lvm' not having effect).
However, it doesn't manifest itself on KVM guests.

[Bug 692647] [NEW] Network bridge does not come up upon boot

2010-12-20 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bridge-utils

On a fresh (vmbuilder) install of Maverick (server 64-bit) I cannot get
a vanilla bridge to come up upon boot using the standard configuration
method (via /etc/network/interfaces [1]). A manual restart of the
networking service gets it to work:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

I have resorted to putting the above command in /etc/rc.local and that
works for now. I would, however, also need to start any network-
required services there as well.

[Bug 692647] Re: Network bridge does not come up upon boot

2010-12-20 Thread Peter Matulis
Weird. Either there was a recent update or there was a wicked delay for
the bridge to come up because it's working now (with a delay of around 5
seconds). I will try it again soon on my similarly plagued Karmic
machine.

[Bug 692587] [NEW] Cannot update crontab PATH variable via PAM

2010-12-20 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cron

In Lucid I cannot update the PATH variable via PAM using:

~/.pam_environment
/etc/security/pam_env.conf

Seems that cron supports the pam_env module but leaves out the capacity
to alter PATH. Can we please pull in this feature? Also, only the
Maverick crontab man page refers to this stuff:

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/maverick/man5/crontab.5.html
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/man5/crontab.5.html

[Bug 692647] [NEW] Network bridge does not come up upon boot

2010-12-20 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bridge-utils

On a fresh (vmbuilder) install of Maverick (server 64-bit) I cannot get
a vanilla bridge to come up upon boot using the standard configuration
method (via /etc/network/interfaces [1]). A manual restart of the
networking service gets it to work:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

I have resorted to putting the above command in /etc/rc.local and that
works for now. I would, however, also need to start any network-
required services there as well.

I mentioned this issue in bug #687631 but this is a more basic issue and
it requires a bug of it's own.

[Bug 688703] [NEW] [lucid] netxen_nic driver and ethernet bonding broken at boot time

2010-12-10 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

A HP Proliant DL360 G6 system running Lucid 64-bit (only certified by
Canonical for 9.04 64bit and 10.10 32bit [1]) is using a dual-port
netxen_nic-based ethernet device.

When ethernet bonding is configured via /etc/network/interfaces [2] the
bonded device appears to exist [5] but does not work. Upon restarting
the networking service [3] the device works as expected. The bonded
device also works when configured manually [4]. This used to work with
Hardy.

Apport information from the affected system is forthcoming.

[Bug 664264] [NEW] GID is not defined upon user GDM login

2010-10-20 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

The GID variable is not defined upon user GDM login for the bash shell.

I've tested this on Ubuntu releases 9.04 to 10.10 and the behaviour is
the same. I've tested the Zsh shell and I don't see this (GID is
defined).

I believe that this variable should be assigned a value when the user
logs in without having to manually cook something in initialization
files (id -g).

Yes, I have -proposed enabled. But my understanding is that this

[Bug 625284] [NEW] 5 second delay between print jobs

2010-08-27 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

In Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 (CUPS 1.3 and 1.4) when sending multiple print
jobs there is a 5 second delay due to CUPS waiting for confirmation that
the previous job was completed. This is fine but the documentation says
that when using the AppSocket (JetDirect) protocol this behaviour can be
disabled by using the 'waiteof' option appended to the device URI:

$ lpadmin -p printername -u allow:all -E -v
socket://192.168.0.1:9100?waiteof=false

This backchannel wait time is supposed to be removed from CUPS version
1.4.4 (Ubuntu 10.10). Would it be possible to backport this change to
9.10 and 10.04?

[Bug 621185] [NEW] Network module atl1c 1.0.1.0-NAPI not available in Lucid

2010-08-20 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Network module atl1c 1.0.1.0-NAPI is not available in Lucid.

Acer Aspire D260 netbooks require the atl1c network module. The version
of the module in Lucid 10.04.0 (1.0.0.1-NAPI) does not support the
onboard card [1]. There is a newer version (1.0.0.2-NAPI) in linux-
backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-21-generic which does but results in
unstable behaviour. I have tested extensively with version 1.0.1.0-NAPI,
which is available in linux-next and I am happy with the behaviour.

[Bug 597337] [NEW] lsb_release should show history of release upgrades

2010-06-22 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lsb

Currently (Lucid), lsb_release only shows information about current
system status. It would be nice (wishlist) if we could keep track of
the last fresh install and all intervening release upgrades.

Current output to lsb_release -a (omitting ugly LSB Version output):

---
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release:10.04
Codename: lucid
---

Suggested output:

---
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Release history: jaunty, karmic-dev, karmic, lucid-dev, lucid
Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release:10.04
Codename: lucid
---

Not sure if we can break 'release-dev' into parts:

release-alpha1
release-beta

and so on.

Also not sure if this can create confusion if users upgrade manually
(editing sources.list and then 'apt-get dist-upgrade').

[Bug 557300] Re: tomcat6 package should fully support running as a different user

2010-04-09 Thread Peter Matulis
I just tested this on a fresh Hardy install (tomcat55) and it also does
not work:

==
# dpkg-statoverride --add ubuntu ubuntu 755 /etc/tomcat5.5

# dpkg-statoverride --list
ubuntu ubuntu 755 /etc/tomcat5.5

# aptitude install tomcat5.5

# ls -ld /etc/tomcat5.5/
drwxr-x--- 4 tomcat55 adm 4096 2010-04-09 17:23 /etc/tomcat5.5/
==

Here is the same with a fresh Intrepid (tomcat6) install:

==
# dpkg-statoverride --add ubuntu ubuntu 755 /etc/tomcat6

# dpkg-statoverride --list
ubuntu ubuntu 755 /etc/tomcat6

# apt-cache madison tomcat6
   tomcat6 | 6.0.18-0ubuntu3.3 | http://archive.ubuntu.com
intrepid-updates/main Packages
   tomcat6 | 6.0.18-0ubuntu3.3 | http://security.ubuntu.com
intrepid-security/main Packages
   tomcat6 | 6.0.18-0ubuntu3 | http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages

# aptitude install tomcat6=6.0.18-0ubuntu3

# ls -ld /etc/tomcat6/
drwxr-xr-x 3 ubuntu ubuntu 4096 2010-04-09 17:43 /etc/tomcat6/
==

Then, still on Intrepid:

==
# aptitude purge tomcat6

# dpkg-statoverride --list
ubuntu ubuntu 755 /etc/tomcat6

# aptitude install tomcat6=6.0.18-0ubuntu3.3

# ls -ld /etc/tomcat6/
drwxr-xr-x 4 ubuntu ubuntu 4096 2010-04-09 18:04 /etc/tomcat6/
==

So I'm not sure how to interpret this. Anyone?

[Bug 551855] [NEW] [hardy] Support for NC522SFP Gb network card is broken

2010-03-30 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 8.04 the module

netxen_nic

exists but does not work. It can be loaded manually but that's all.

This affects, at least, the following HP/NetXen Gigabit network
controller:

NC522SFP
103c:705b NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/networking/nc522sfp/index.html

It has been proven to work, at least, in Ubuntu 9.10.

Attached is a compressed tarball (info.tar.gz) containing the following
files:

dmesg-910.txt
lspci-910.txt (includes several invocations of lspci)
system-910.txt
lshw-910.txt
dmesg-804.txt
modinfo-804.txt

Please provide support for the above card in Ubuntu 8.04.

[Bug 513848] Re: [karmic] CPU load not being reported accurately

2010-03-12 Thread Peter Matulis
Here are new screenshots for Jaunty and Karmic. Each test ran for a
good 25 minutes. I've also added a Karmic screenshot for 'top' showing
(some of) the threads associated with the single Java process. In
addition, I have copied my recent post (2010-03-10) to kernel-
t...@lists.ubuntu.com :

Can anyone tell me whether the Karmic kernel has implemented a different
way of what it considers a process (as opposed to threads)?

I have a situation where CPU load is zero on Karmic but considerably
higher in Jaunty and earlier.

The scenario is a single java process with many threads. The system has
4 cores and only one java process should logically produce a negligible
CPU load but why was this not the case with earlier kernels? Has
something changed in Karmic that would explain what I'm seeing?

[Bug 503008] Re: Dovecot-auth doesn't close sockets

2010-03-03 Thread Peter Matulis
I've only managed to use this parameter with Ubuntu 8.04 . Otherwise,
the error above is thrown.

[Bug 503008] Re: Dovecot-auth doesn't close sockets

2010-03-03 Thread Peter Matulis
Hmmm, the default shipped with 8.10 is

dovecot-imapd 1:1.1.4-0ubuntu1.3

but an updated 8.04 has

dovecot-imapd 1:1.2.9-1ubuntu3

Why does this parameter work with the older version?

And @Gaylord, why aren't you running the latest available with 8.04
anyway?

[Bug 503008] Re: Dovecot-auth doesn't close sockets

2010-03-03 Thread Peter Matulis
Strange. I built a Hardy virtual machine and 1.2.9 was installed.
Indeed, the archives do say 1.0.10. I'll have to determine what
happened with my VM. At any rate, if the error is thrown then that
version doesn't support the parameter.
