[Bug 763052] Re: Ubuntu can't boot on nvidia GeForce GT240 with nouveau drivers
Tried again the actual nouveau driver, with the same result: The screen displyed only some relics of former activity, no work possible in Ubuntu. REISUB properly restarts. The worst: A restart into recovery mode freezes at the stage, where a selection is expected (resume of boot, start in text mode etc.). No input is accepted, REISUB shows no response. I modified the grub booting line (pressing 'e') and replaced "quit splash" by nomodeset and was able to enable the non-propriety driver again. [Bug 425979] Re: Holding shift fails to display grub2 menu
Encounter the same with a forgot-the-name desktop PC (Intel Core i3 530) on Precise. Even if I set GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=20 (plus update-grub), the boot continues without delay as if no hidden wait would happen. Neither SHIFT nor ESC makes a menu appear, and in the case of a non-zero hidden timeout neither any other key. I returned to a GRUB_TIMEOUT=1 in order to be able to react in the case of a defect on Precise. This really works. Live CD also wouldn't help, as it comes with a not working nouveau graphical adapter, and only the alternate CD really starts. o.pet...@volny.cz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/425979 Title: Holding shift fails to display grub2 menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/425979/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hello, tried the patch in Precise, without any effect on behaviour. [Bug 763052] Re: Ubuntu can't boot on nvidia GeForce GT240 with nouveau drivers
Now I can positively confirm, that the problem was given by a Nouveau driver. According to the receipt #19, I removed the Nouveau driver, restarted for sure, allowed the Nvidia propriety driver (to run Ubiquity in 3D), and everything is going fine now. I was just confused by the "install" parameter, which made no sense to me, but I trusted for a while, until I decided to uninstall it. Thanks a lot!!! Anyway, the bug still persisted until yesterday, and if there is some priority to make the Nouveau driver run with this card, I would be really happy to help as a testing case. [Bug 763052] Re: Ubuntu can't boot on nvidia GeForce GT240 with nouveau drivers
After filing a new bug #973789, I came to the result, that the causes for my trouble (Precise install additionally to Lucid only through the alternate CD, now it runs only in rescue mode) is the graphics driver (I have a GeForce GT 240), for details see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/973789 Maybe there is an additional problem, as my trial to install the proprietary NVidia driver, working in graphical rescue mode, failed. Now I don't know how to continue: repeat the install from scratch according to Eduard's recommendations, or replace my actual driver by an appropriate one? But what is the actual driver, and which one to use now? nouveau is said to be not working on boot (#21), but it is recommended to install nouveau (#21), and the final target is apparently to end up with VESA (which I think is the driver in my rescue environment). Sorry for my beginner's kidding, but I have tried to install the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver by several ways. For the time being I still work on Lucid, but I am eager to update to Precise. Thanks a lot! [Bug 973789] Re: Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot
Regarding the fact that I do have a NVidia GeForce GT240, the symptomatics desribed above might be linked to a misfunction reported in bug # 763052. It seems that I can work in recovery mode due to the nouveau VESA driver, which was there without my involvement (as recommended in the second bug, so no need to install xserver- xorg-video-nouveau). After a recommendation I have tried to install the restricted NVidia driver, but without success (see the attached jockey log file). ** Attachment added: "jockey.log" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/973789/+attachment/3085684/+files/jockey.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973789 Title: Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/973789/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 973789] Re: Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot
Inbetween I have tried the alternate CD, also beta, downloaded 4/15. Install ran without disruption. Previous OS get started without trouble. First start (and any further) of Precise began with a blank violet screen (for a second), followed by an introduction screen (20 secs?), with four horizontal bars in violet-black-violet-black, separated by tiny dotted coloured lines, which slightly move (seemingly a reminder of the moving dots of the welcome-screen). Then a completely black screen without any sign of life. CTRL+ALT+PrtScrn+REISUB shuts the system down. In recovery mode, the system boots correctly and enables a glimpse into Ubiquity. I updated everything, but a full start rendered the symptoms described above. I enter some logs which may help with finding the problem. Can add any more, of course. Two months ago I had also problems with install, then of the 11.10 version, and to a completely different computer for a friend, but with the same monitor. It has seemed to me a problem of the intel video card, which didn't cope with my new monitor BENQ GL 2240, and after a reduction of the screen size, the system worked fine, without these strange effects (stripes across the screen, disappearing letters etc.). With my friend, my installation works without problems, with another monitor. ** Attachment added: "Xorg.0.log" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/973789/+attachment/3068389/+files/Xorg.0.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973789 Title: Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/973789/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 973789] Re: Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot
Just a low quality (sorry) picture (screenshot is not possible of course) from my forth boot from the install CD. You can see different segment of my Lucid-desktop. It is probably the last screen before the switch-off before the trial of the install CD, because you can see the lower part of the switch-off window on the right up section. And possibly it is just the content of the graphic card, so Precise finally doesn't take this information from the Lucid partition on the hard disk. ** Attachment added: "screenshot (cell phone) from the install process" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/973789/+attachment/3025499/+files/Precise%20install%20entry%20screen.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973789 Title: Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/973789/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 973789] [NEW] Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot
Public bug reported: Sorry for filing it with "ubiquity", but the bug is linked to the install process of the beta version of Precise Pangolin, and I had to choose a package for Apport. Steps: 1 downloaded live CD from http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ by April 2nd, 2 boot with live CD 3 ubuntu loading page appears, dots moving 4 funny welcome page appears: parts of my standard Lucid Lynx desktop, strangely shifted across the wallpaper. Let's say, the upper left quarter at the lower right, etc. system goes on working for a while, then freezes. no input, even not the REISUB sequence. why does the live CD install take info from my harddisk??? 5 switch off power, new boot, I repeat steps 2 + 3 6 very colourful screen with many pixels, as if taking a random bitmap and displaying by the graphic card. comp seems to work for some seconds (CD player active), no input accepted 7 the same like steps 5 + 6 I see no chance to intervene, i.e. to make a mistake. Where can I find logs to post? Those in the /var/log/installer are very old. Can I stop the process? No hurry, I'm safely and happily working on Ubuntu 10.04 and open for testing. [Bug 453444] Re: /var/log fills up with "all normal" messages @ about 575/sec fill up the available space
Hello, just a useful hint on how to get into the system: After some time of working with the quite slow Karmic version (now I know why) and a regular shutdown, the next day I couldn't run Ubuntu any more. After entering the password and some minutes of intensive working, the system returned to the login form and so on. The login form was without colours and without selection bars at the bottom. In the recovery mode I could get up to a command line and was able to see files. This bug showed me, what's going on (thanks!). After some hesitation (I'm no expert) I have backuped the huge files "syslog", "messages" and "kern.log" and replaced them by tall or empty ones (e.g. sudo cp syslog.1 syslog ). The second start after this was completely successful. Now the system is still slow and after some time it gives warnings about stuffed root disk --> shutdown, clean up the logs and re-run. [Bug 222852] Re: Mystery power button events on resume
I have the same problem, unable to work in Ubuntu. Possibly it was caused after a TAR installation of an ica Client from their download site. In the Czech wiki, this is recommended even if Citrix offers only SuSe and redhat solutions (as "Linux"). But maybe I've overseen something, because finally it didn't work. The problems arised from the next (?) reboot. No matter. Now I've no idea how to get back into. I've tried to remove user related settings (.gconf, .gconfd, .config, .gnome2), no improvement. I've entered gconftool-2 --set "/apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/power" --type string "nothing", no change. Even the gnome-power-manager directory didn't appear. I've tried also to generate the XML file at this location, no change. Re: [Bug 172508] Re: non western character disappears in oo writer
Hello, thank you for your response. Inbetween I have switched to worse bugs which forced me to leave Ubuntu. After an actualisation from mid January, without any further reasons, Ubuntu freezes within five to ten minutes. I've tried some tips I have found in hte forums, but I'm not so common with Linux to go in deep. I suppose the time won't be enough to upgrade to hardy, because already during loading it is supposed to freeze. Furthermore I have a very lot to do, so there is no time to trial and error with further installations. But I have not lost faith, right when I'll start to gain some spare time I will try to migrate back. Thanks for your effort, continue with your work, guys, it's the only choice to get rid of Linux as an expert system. It's no more far! Re: [Bug 183450] Re: system crashes after 3-8 minutes
Dear Mr. Bacher, thank you for your initiative. I just want to tell you that before I have raised my "bug report", I have gone thoroughly through the reports of other members of the community on ubuntuforums.org and tried out anything which is accesable to my knowledge of Linux/Ubuntu (which isn't much). I don't know what is Nvidia, apic, smp, compiz, inbetween I've learned what is REISUB, kernel, GRUB etc. Going through the discussions is uneasy: * You have to find out which user (within a certain discussion) has the same trouble like you, because some have problems with their sound card, some with a dual core, and within one thread, and their solutions match different conditions. During the discussion you have to filter out those participants who share your problem and ignore the other ones. Sometimes you learn later on that also a "co-patient" has differing symptoms from yours. * Mostly I have no idea how to realize the suggested solution, it is like "I have installed the 6.22 kernel and got rid of the freeze", but where do I find that? And a week after the user rejoins the debate stating that it didn't help anyway. Following your recommendation I have checked also the solutions presented on launchpad.net/support. The comparision with other members of the community has strengthened my feeling that it's really a bug I'm confronted with. From the bugs listed there the following resemble most to my case (with comments about the differences): * Bug 5537 has different symptoms (mouse still running, additional strange behaviour I don't experience) * Bug 23525 has different symptoms (drive going mad) * Bug 18942 and 13252 looks the same, but it is already "answered" (without solution) * Bug 25485 has different symptoms (mouse still running) * Bug 11848 has different symptoms (freeze right after start) * Bug 14634 has different symptoms (freezes much less regularly) I'm firmly persuaded, that my freezes come from something very basic. My system has been running perfectly for three months, and the freeze occured suddenly without any change from my side (as I know). The point of no return happened on Jan 14. I have just clicked the "recommended software update" asterisk, and after two hours intended to leave my office. I've forgotten something, so I rebooted the machine, and from then I have these crashes within ten minutes after start, without any exception. I'm sure it is something basic, because I don't need to run any applications, just logging in and watching the screen, and the system hangs within 5-10 minutes, reliably. In the following weeks I had a lot work to do so I just intermediately switched back to the XP partition, reloading some data there. From that date I'm using the internet surface instead of Evolution for mailing, which is not comfortable neither fast. Chaos is rising concerning which version of my files are more actual - the ones on Windows or on Ubuntu). Frequently I need something from a mail stored in the Ubuntu partition in Evolution, which means a reboot to Ubuntu and another one back to Windows, and to be fast before Mr. Freeze comes. I hope something can be done to enable my return to Linux, I don't know what to say to friends and my wife who are sceptic anyway to this. Sorry for bothering you, but I really don't know what to do. I do have openoffice.org 2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3, but the bug still hasn't fixed. [Bug 172508] Re: non western character disappears in oo writer
The thing happens really only if * a file has been founded in oo (CTRL-N)AND * something has been pasted containing un-western characters After the first operation, starting a new document, everything is consistent. Documents are stored and loaded without loss of charatres. After pasting something containing only western characters, everything goes all roight. After pasting just a single non-western charcter, THE WHOLE FILE is "infected" by the non western character of the pasted input. This doesn't matter immediately, but only after saving and reloading the whole file. Lots of non-western characters disappear. The problem occurs independently of formation. If I paste-special without formatting, the same happens. Even if I store the text to be pasted into a plain file, copying from it results in the error. I have also tried storing a document not founded under oo as a 'ott' template, but the error continues. For the time being, I have to have some blank document (founded in Word) stored at some place, and any new doc I have to clone from this, because CTRL-N causes data loss. This happens similarloy to a friend who is running oo under Windows, I've just seen him replacing odd copyright signs by our special characters. [Bug 172508] non western character disappears in oo writer
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org I'm using oo writer in Ubuntu 7.10, but the problem occurs also to a friend in oo under Windows (don't know which version). A oo writer document written in Czech sometimes (don't know under which conditions) is opened, and several Czech characters (finally only a small subset) change to unreadible other chars (e.g. U+00FD, y with accent, changes to U+00A9, the (c) copyright sign). Find and Replace restores the original state, but this is no solution. I've tried copy and paste-special without formatting into a completely new file. but the next time (or at some later time) the y+accent again disappears. Font changing doesn't help, neither in recovering ad hoc the original state, nor in saving the characters properly. Originally I had the text written in "Times;Times New Roman", but even when I store it with FreeSans or FreeSerif the problem reoccurs. It seems to me, that this happens only to documents created under oo. I have lots of documents imported from Word, which behave completely normal. Who could help me? I haven't found this library in Synaptic. On the given address there is already a file with this name, but anyway it doesn't work. [Bug 155671] OpenOffice.org crashing when opening this document
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org I have received a document in .doc format and didn't manage to open it in OOo Writer under Ubuntu. When I've opened the file (from somebody else) in Word and re-saved as "Word 6.0" (before it was just "Word"), it blew up from 1.6 to 5.0 MB, but was fully readable in OOo. So to me there is no primary need to have it "cracked", but maybe there is a hint in detecting other bugs. Originally I have added my crash to bug #140622, which seemed similar, but Chris Cheney recommended me to opena separate bug as there are different reasons for crashing. I quote the history: Zamox, (bug #140622) The quick solution to this problem is to just install openoffice.org meta package and/or the openoffice.org-base package. Something that writer needs to display the document is in the openoffice.org-base package. I intend to track down more of these related issue during UDS next week. Peter, Your problem doesn't seem to be resolved by installing openoffice.org- base so you should open your bug under a separate bug number. I will be marking this bug as a duplicate of bug #52847. [Bug 140622] Re: OpenOffice crashes when opening this word document
Adding another file causing OOo writer to crash (Ubuntu). No matter of hurry, just another file to be analysed. I've opened the file (from somebody else) in Word and re-saved as Word 6.0 (before it was just "Word"). It blew up from 1.6 to 5.0 MB, but was fully readable in OOo. Good luck!
