Hi Martin,

There is requested new patch. Tried to implement all your suggestions,
and in the way rewrote almost all alsaload. For me it now looks more
compact and makes more sense. Tested it, works for both ALSA and slamr
scenarios (can't test slmodemd modem:x scenario though). Bear with me,
as it is my first patch for Bash script :)

[Bug 298424] Re: sl-modem-daemon init.d script looks for information about ALSA modem in wrong place

2009-02-16 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
I have to correct my statement in this bug report :)

Actually, script works right, but only when modem is as major device. It
doesn't look for modems as subdevices of cards. For that,
/proc/asound/cards won't show you any information, but aplay -l will.
Therefore I added additional check in alsaload method in init.d script
for situation when there is no modem string in /proc/asound/cards, but
there is such string in aplay -l output. This check then takes row from
output, extracts card and subdevice numbers, and create ALSA device
address, e.t. hw:0,6 and passes it to slmodemd as needed.

Patch is for debian/sl-modem-daemon.init file.

[Bug 162006] Re: SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all

2008-12-26 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
If someone still listens to this bug - short resume of current situation:
* Starting somewhere with Feisty Linux kernel started to remove old IDE drivers
and replaced them with PATA drivers (nice way to introduce regressions, as it
seems);
* Alan Cox (re)wrote HighPoint group of drivers during that process, including
shiny new one pata_hpt37x;
* In result, new driver can't find hard disks connected to lot of controllers,
web is full of such reports for some two years;
* It feels like no one cares, because you should use better [tm] SATA
controllers instead of this broken cruft (partly I agree);

Returning to technical side of problem, with boring and extensive
testing I have come to conclusion that problem is wrongly detected bus
speed. New pata_hpt37x gives me 66Hz for my controller (details see in
lspci output attached above), but Dapper, which has last working version
of old IDE driver, indicates it uses 33Hz bus speed. As it's mentioned
in this b.k.o bug report
(http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7703), controllers shouldn't
really use 66 Hz bus speed if there is another controllers down the road
on PCI bus.

Something is broken within detection of bus speed. I will propably ping
upstream (Alan Cox) myself, but if someone can help me with getting this
fixed - you are welcome.

[Bug 197946] Re: [hardy] 'Connection Information' is greyed out in pop-up menu when right clicking on Network Manager applet

2008-12-01 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
FMartins, this problem you get in Hardy? Did you dist-upgrade or clean
install?

For me it is clear that bug is NetworkManager incompatibility with
/etc/network/interfaces, because it happens when static interface is
defined using /etc/network/interfaces settings. There is no such problem
when you use NetworkManager Edit Connections Editor.

So question is - how to treat it? It is wrong for NetworkManager not to
show info about what is defined in /etc/network/interfaces? If yes, how
to fix that? What Ubuntu devs plans for /etc/network/interfaces? It will
be abandoned? Or NetworkManager will have proper integration with that?

For me, it is not a issue, more like policy decision.

[Bug 298424] [NEW] sl-modem-daemon init.d script looks for information about ALSA modem in wrong place

2008-11-15 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Public bug reported:

This is very similar to bug in Jockey (aka Hardware Drivers):
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jockey/+bug/295158

Issue is that /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon detects if there is ALSA modem
automatically. However, for some reason this is broken beginning with
Hardy (or maybe even before that), at least for my card, because it
looks for modem information in /proc/asound/cards. However, indication
that my computer has ALSA modem you can find *only* doing aplay -l,
which gives indication that subdevice is modem and it's ALSA address (in
my case hw:0,6).

my /proc/asound/cards is:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf470 irq 16

and aplay -l is:
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Headset [Logitech USB Headset], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

So please fix so sl-modem-daemon init.d script would look into aplay -l
results, if it's available (alsa-utils package). It is installed by
default for almost all Ubuntu and Debian distribution scenarios.

[Bug 295158] Re: Jockey doesn't find Si3054 Modem (winmodem trough ALSA)

2008-11-07 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
my /proc/asound/cards is:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf470 irq 16

About /etc/default/sl-modem-daemon - yes, it is strange. By default,
this file has such look:

# NOTE: settings in /etc/defautls/slmodemd are used too

# set this to 1 to never run the daemon from the init script
# you can set it if you have an USB device, than the init script won't
# be started at boot (but when the USB device is plugged on)
DONTSTART=0

# This is the default configuration for the slmodem driver daemon
# running on Debian systems.
#
# Edit device node and country code here ...
#
# possible country codes are:
#
# USA
# GERMANY
# BELGIUM
# etc.
#
# use 'slmodemd --countrylist' to check out other countries
#
#
#SLMODEMD_DEVICE=slamr0
#SLMODEMD_COUNTRY=GERMANY

SLMODEMD_DEVICE=auto
SLMODEMD_COUNTRY=USA

#
# Additional options for slmodemd, see slmodemd -h output for details.
# Do NOT set country or device name here!

OPTS=

# force the start of the daemon even if old type modules seem to be
# installed (set it to 1)

FORCESTART=0

# set this to not see any hints of the init script on startup

# BEQUIET=1

# set this to not create the /dev/modem symlink

# NOSYMLINK=1

But to get card working I must provide device name just like this (skipping
most of the part):
SLMODEMD_DEVICE=hw:0,6 instead of SLMODEMD_DEVICE=auto

I just checked /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon and your suspicions are
confirmed, it greps same /proc/asound/cards. So it is bug in two places,
init.d script for slmodemd and jockey, caused by something that has
changed output in /proc/asound/cards.

Sorry, missed Radeon in the end of comment :) So what driver you use
for it? Fglrx or ati? Try 'lsmod | grep fglrx' in Applications

This irky behaviour is also in 8.10, but in smaller scale. On Hardy is
almost impossible to set right volume, in Ibex you can at least try. But
it still jumps up and down.

[Bug 273560] [NEW] usb audio output has annoying clicks when keyboard/mice/touchpad is used and Desktop Effects turned on

2008-09-23 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Public bug reported:

Intrepid Ibex, up to date 23.09.2008

1. Plug in USB Headset
2. Launch Rhythmbox
3. Play your favorite song, very light, maye classic
4. Move cursor very fast
5. Hear lot of annoying clicks
6. Open Applications = Accesories = Gedit
7. Write text and hear click in phones everytime you press key

Post Scriptum: this is only when Desktop Effects are turned on. When
they are off, no cliks. That propably means problems with PCI latency
stuff or ati video card.

Video controller: ATI Technologies Inc M56P (Radeon Mobility X1600),
using newest open source ati driver

[Bug 162006] Re: SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all

2008-09-03 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Hi, I tried this controler again with Intrepid Ibex Daily Live CD, kernel:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.27-2-generic #1 SMP Thu Aug 28 17:20:02 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Short answer is - pata_hpt73x doesn't see hard disk anymore at all. At
boot, SATA RAID message shows hard disk is found, and old distro still
sees it. I attach dmesg and lspci --vvnn for additional information.

[Bug 197946] Re: [hardy] 'Connection Information' is greyed out in pop-up menu when right clicking on Network Manager applet

2008-05-25 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
I have to clarify bug, because something has changed.

Original behaviour mentioned in this bug is gone, I can choose
Connection Information when I use NM for choosing and connecting to
WiFi. However, it is greyed out when I have manual configuration in
/etc/network/interfaces or via G-S-T network-admin.

FMartins, 'Unlock' button is new auth. thing, aka PolicyKit. Therefore
you don't have to use gksudo to enter password.

In fact, this is connected to somehow global differences between NM and
G-S-T.

[Bug 162006] Re: SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all

2008-05-15 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Hi Leann,

Finally got myself to test Hardy again against my computer.
Unfortunately nothing changes. However, I produced shot with photo cam
(as it is kernel messages which are hard to dump to text file) to see
reset and I/O messages in console while I am trying to copy stuff from
one directory to another. I tried to copy to the same disk and to
different one - the same problems.

I am thinking that it is IRQ conflict. I will remove additional SATA
card and try then again. If it will work, I will know source of problem.

[Bug 228255] [NEW] Firefox error pages broken in Latvian translation

2008-05-08 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Public bug reported:

There is something wrong with firefox latvian language pack.

Steps to reproduce:
Open System-Langauge support.
Install Lat tvian and choose Latvian as the default language.
(Restart).

Launch firefox and enter some invalid URL.

Instead of error page you get this:

XML Parsing Error: error in processing external entity reference
Location:
jar:file:///usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9b5/chrome/toolkit.jar!/content/global/netError.xhtml
Line Number 10, Column 3:  %netErrorDTD;

The same is displayed when invalid SSL certificate window is displayed.

The workaround is to disable firefox language pack from

[Bug 152681] Re: Connection Information should display the name/IP of DHCP server

2008-04-21 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
I still experience this problem when I have static configuration in
g-s-t. Seemingly then NetworkManager thinks that it doesn't handle this
connection and therefore it isn't active. Of course I can dig connection
info from g-s-t, but it is two clicks versus approximately five plus
entering password.

It is of course matter of integrating NM with g-s-t stuff, but it is
still a bug - from user point of view, so I will change status to New.

[Bug 185854] Re: Setting static IP in Network Settings doesn't produce correct data

2008-04-13 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
I tested deb provided by hyperair (big thanks) and however it has wrong
depencies (cairo2 version doesn't fit with Hardy), but --force-all
cures/b0rks any problems :) Anyway, it would be strange if cairo would
affect this :)

So I tested in various situations and shortly - it works and I don't
even experience bug what Kjell Braden saw - everything updates just
normally.

I tested several situations:
1. Open network-admin, roaming mode is on, /etc/network/interfaces has only lo
entry
2. Press unblock, auth stuff
3. Double click on Wired interface
4. Check out 'Enable roaming mode' checkbox and configure interface according
to your needs
5. Click OK
6. Vola! /etc/network/interfaces has auto eth0 (under interface configuration,
but who cares for now) and interface is up and running

After this, I run second test:
1. Open network admin, roaming mode is disabled, /etc/network/interfaces has
address you configured before
2. Press unblock auth stuff
3. Double click on Wired Interface
4. Change address to new one
5. Click OK
6. Vola! /etc/network/interfaces has new ip with still auto eth0 enabled AND
new address is up and running (not like bug expierenced by Kjell Braden, as far
as I understood)

I will do additional line of tests, but this bug seems to be fixed by
this patch. Thanks to Kjell for fix and hyperair for deb!

[Bug 185854] Re: Setting static IP in Network Settings doesn't produce correct data

2008-04-13 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
If you will read comments on bug mentioned above, you will see that NM
static interface configuration is purely SUSE/Redhat thing, as they use
service system to control services/settings. It's totally ignores other
distro configurations (Debian, Gentoo, etc.). So it is just not the
standard way of doing things (tm). G-s-t, however, has system backends
for each sytem.

NM should keep their stuff integrated with network-admin, not compete,
because we need one blessed tool of configuring network.

[Bug 197985] Re: [Hardy alpha5] network configuration alteration on update

2008-04-13 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
This could be related by this bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-tools/+bug/185854
as it also caused by dropping 'auto eth0' when manually configuring
network interfaces.

Question to original submitter - did 'auto eth1' disappeared just after
update or you did some switching between roaming mode and manual
configuration when you hit a bug?

If so, this bug is definitely duplicate. Luckily, it seemingly will be
fixed before release.

[Bug 185854] Re: Setting static IP in Network Settings doesn't produce correct data

2008-04-13 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Count. about testing:
It is interesting that there is some other bug - or implications of same bug -
which can be triaged like this:

1. Open network-admin, you have manually configured IP address
2. Unblock, auth. stuff
3. Uncheck Wired Interface checkbox
4. It reappears!
5. /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 line is gone
6. Uncheck checkbox again
7. It stays clean!
8. /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 line is still gone (as intended)
9. Check checkbox for Wired Interface
10. It stays checked as intended, and auto eth0 reappears in
/etc/network/interfaces, however now it has at least 5 empty lines between
interface configuration and auto eth0 (cosmetic bug, but strange anyway).

It is not dangerous as this bug, but something very very fishy happens
there and this feels like can be triggered from something else.

Also notice that this behavior is for both - standard and patched debs,
so patch still must go in, at least to fix default behaviour. This could
be easily separated bug.

Actual results: Authorize password usage dialog appears, is highlighted,
but not focused, giving impression to user that Evolution has hanged.
If user don't accept this dialog or do something about it, Evolution
appears black shadowed, as it would be hanged or busy.

Expected results: Authorize password usage dialog appears, is
highlighted and has focus. User interacts with it and life goes on
without confusion.

This is very similar bug to

[Bug 188349] Re: [Hardy] Unable to save manual network configurations using network-admin

2008-03-04 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
I can add additional scenario to this. As Islam pointed out, error
message appears only after second opening of network-admin. However,
interesting is that manual configuration of PPP is silently dropped even
in first time. In second time it ends with already mentioned error
message.

1. Open network-admin
2. Authentificate to change settings
3. Double click on PPP device, enable this connection and create settings.
Press OK;
4. Configuration is disabled and some data lost
5. Exit network-admin, Launch it again
6. Try to configure PPP again
7. Get error message

However I think it could be easily two different bugs, I will probably
know better after some debugging tomorrow.

[Bug 193661] Re: [hardy] network-admin doesn't save PPP device settings and silently drop them

2008-02-28 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
I got this bug in Hardy. Yet, what is more interesting, now after week I
can't change even wired network settings, as they got dropped silently
too, in similar behaviour.

Question is - do this happens on clean install? I have Hardy from Alpha
3 and have updated it regularly. As I know, usually such strange bugs
usually appears when buggy updates happens.

My testing session with gst guys at #gst channel in freenode suggest
that system-tools-backends with policykit is to blame. Changes don't get
authorisated, even if authorisation with user and password is successful
in the begining.

I will try to do this with clean user and clean install and then will
confirm is this really a bug.

[Bug 138746] Re: CalDAV calenders do not work

2008-02-05 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
KraetziChriZ, RSCS is deadly easy, just follow installing instructions
on their webpage (http://rscds.sourceforge.net/installation.php),
actually you have to issue just few commands under user 'postgres' (this
is how postgres authentification in command line works) and you are
done. Also Postgresql on Ubuntu when installed is configured and all in
fact you need is to change permissions in pg_hba.conf, which is kinda
good, because you can't be careless about security. Keep in mind to add
requested row in manual as first, because default is to deny any kind of
access from local box without having local user.

But RSCDS didn't work with Evolution for last few versions. However, I
came up with a fix after long and stubborn debbuging sessions, which is
very easy one (if you are not afraid from fixing and compiling new e-d-s
deb for you or want to enable it for other distro, follow here
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=514487). I will push it to be
included in 2.22.

Testing RSCDS with fixed Evo, it is a bliss. True integration with rest
of bunch - Thunderbird with Lightning, Sunbird, etc.

Keep in mind that what CalDAV server you use is important, because their
support for various clients and technology differs heavily. Most of free
software caldav clients won't work reliably with Apple Calendar Server,
because it extensively uses their extentions, and so it is very fragile
and verbose (It doesn't like time zone stuff time to time). Also for
some reason only Basic auth works with it. RSCDS, however, works with
Diggest without big problems, and you can enable SSL there too, as it
uses Apache as HTTP engine.

[Bug 91043] Re: Install Brasero by default

Nero argument is not serious, as most people don't care about what

integration, and don't have additional bloat. And no, I don't need burn

Including it in default is fine, but Nautilus CD burner should be still

[Bug 27014] Re: evolution bug, Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2008-01-10 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
As this bug is rather important for Evolution, as it shows up very frequently,
involved people probably would like to know this:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2008-January/msg00057.html

Fragment from this
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213072
= Error Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync
87 dups total, 10 in the last 30 days.
Sankar works on a workaround to silently resync the folder summary,
without displaying a confusing error message to the user. this will
hopefully be included in 2.21.90.

So there is hope that this bug will be gone for Hardy. That would be a
bless.

[Bug 162006] Re: SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all

2008-01-08 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Ok, here we go - test with linux-image-2.6.24.

1) I tested with daily Live CD 01-08-2008 (2.6.24-2-generic), it loaded
ok, then I tried to select partitions on disk on that controller and
format them. Result was total freeze which I could end only with reset.
Freeze started slowly, as box were getting overwhelmed by malicious
data. After reboot I got borked GRUB at MBR, as it seems tried to write
partition table and failed. I have to mention that Live CD with Gutsy
kernel, it also crashed, but it didn't succeed in writing anything in
hard disk. See dmesg attached for Live CD dmesg with information about
devices;

2) Then I tried your suggested method in last comment. I got
linux-image-2.6.24-3-generic. Result is:
* Slower reading, as mentioned. However, it didn't crash or stopped, I can boot
it all the time. Just slowly reading and writing, andwriting is also ok, no bad
data or freeze;
* Strange errors from CD-ROM device (/dev/hdc), which could be part of
problems. For example, when I booted in kernel, message about CD with data and
music appeared, however there was no CD in device. Also attached
dmesg-hardy-hdd.txt for dmesg dump;

I can do any other tests, as I leave this kernel installed for now. Just
tell me what you need.

Maybe it's just a guess, but there where similar regressions for
HighPoint controllers in 2.6.22, which where fixed in 2.6.23. Maybe you
should try to compile 2.6.23 Debian style (with deb generation) and then
report back if it works or not.

First useful Google hit was

are some doc on Ubuntu wiki too for this.

[Bug 162006] SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all

See commit 64a8170975947978ea4094dd6c4b1f41119d6ae6

I submited this bug for reference purpose, because I hope with Hardy
release this bug will be gone, but this should be checked. Of course, if
someone could backport fix mentioned above to Gutsy 2.6.22 kernel, that
would rock, but I guess it would be not that high priority.

[Bug 162006] Re: SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all

2007-11-11 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
I must correct myself:
1) Fix mentioned in previous comment refers to Very Experimental pata_hpt371x
driver, which is disabled in Gutsy kernel (symbol CONFIG_PATA_HPT37X);
2) Therefore bug is for old driver 'hpt366' (symbol CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HPT366);

[Bug 156688] Can't change amount of video memory trough Screens and Graphics preferences caplet

2007-10-24 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Public bug reported:

1. Open System = Administration = Screens and Graphics
2. Choose Graphics card tab
3. Video memory drop menu is inactive and set to automatic all the time, for
all drivers

Purpose of this feature imho is for example onboard graphics card for
laptops, where video card uses operative memory as video memory. For
intel Xorg by default uses 16 MB, which is far less to run some descent
game.

[Bug 27014] Re: evolution bug, Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2007-10-21 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
I suggest to add some kinda checking before launching Evolution and do
kill -9 for all Evolution proceses (alarm service and data server - they
both will get restarted so it's not a reason to worry about them). It
have worked for almost all situations in recent appearances of this bug
for me (under Feisty and Dapper). It could help to fix this really
annoying bug at least in workaround level.

However, in mean time, I have decided to do more investigation and even
possibly try to fix that bug in Evolution level (or get some ass kicked
to deal with it). Whish me luck :)

[Bug 152958] [gutsy] No booting from Live/Alternative CD without hw-detect/start_pcmcia=disable

2007-10-15 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Public bug reported:

1. Burn recent Live CD (15.10.2007)
2. Put in CD/DVD drive
3. Reboot
4. Choose to start Ubuntu Live CD
5. Status bar appears, nothing happens. In ALT+F1, few errors about PCI and
Floppy appears, but nothing significant.
6. Reboot computer again
7. This time, choose F6 to modify launch string to add
'hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false'
8. Everything loads just fine and I can install Ubuntu

This error I have got for last three releases on various computers. What
is reason of this bug? Does anyone cares to fix it? What data is needed
for diagnose it?

Computer is Celeron D 1.8 Ghz with 512 MB, DVD/CD-RW combo.

[Bug 152416] GNOME panels are smaller than detected and set resolution

2007-10-13 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Public bug reported:

1. Install Gutsy RC with Alternative CD
2. Install GNOME
3. Login as new user
4. Problems:
a) GNOME panels are set to width in 1024 pixels
b) System = Preferences = Screen Resolution also shows width 1024 pixels
c) Actual screen resolution is 1280x768 (which is also monitor's resolution)

So panels are smaller that actual screen resolution and Screen
Resolution app also lies about it.

this is snippet from lspci concerning graphics chipset:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS/940GML and 945GT
Express Memory Controller Hub (rev 03)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
