[Bug 298424] Re: sl-modem-daemon init.d script looks for information about ALSA modem in wrong place
I have to correct my statement in this bug report :) Actually, script works right, but only when modem is as major device. It doesn't look for modems as subdevices of cards. For that, /proc/asound/cards won't show you any information, but aplay -l will. Therefore I added additional check in alsaload method in init.d script for situation when there is no modem string in /proc/asound/cards, but there is such string in aplay -l output. This check then takes row from output, extracts card and subdevice numbers, and create ALSA device address, e.t. hw:0,6 and passes it to slmodemd as needed. [Bug 162006] Re: SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all
If someone still listens to this bug - short resume of current situation: * Starting somewhere with Feisty Linux kernel started to remove old IDE drivers and replaced them with PATA drivers (nice way to introduce regressions, as it seems); * Alan Cox (re)wrote HighPoint group of drivers during that process, including shiny new one pata_hpt37x; * In result, new driver can't find hard disks connected to lot of controllers, web is full of such reports for some two years; * It feels like no one cares, because you should use better [tm] SATA controllers instead of this broken cruft (partly I agree); Returning to technical side of problem, with boring and extensive testing I have come to conclusion that problem is wrongly detected bus speed. New pata_hpt37x gives me 66Hz for my controller (details see in lspci output attached above), but Dapper, which has last working version of old IDE driver, indicates it uses 33Hz bus speed. As it's mentioned in this b.k.o bug report (http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7703), controllers shouldn't really use 66 Hz bus speed if there is another controllers down the road on PCI bus. Something is broken within detection of bus speed. I will propably ping upstream (Alan Cox) myself, but if someone can help me with getting this fixed - you are welcome. -- SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162006 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 197946] Re: [hardy] 'Connection Information' is greyed out in pop-up menu when right clicking on Network Manager applet
FMartins, this problem you get in Hardy? Did you dist-upgrade or clean install? For me it is clear that bug is NetworkManager incompatibility with /etc/network/interfaces, because it happens when static interface is defined using /etc/network/interfaces settings. There is no such problem when you use NetworkManager Edit Connections Editor. So question is - how to treat it? It is wrong for NetworkManager not to show info about what is defined in /etc/network/interfaces? If yes, how to fix that? What Ubuntu devs plans for /etc/network/interfaces? It will be abandoned? Or NetworkManager will have proper integration with that? [Bug 298424] [NEW] sl-modem-daemon init.d script looks for information about ALSA modem in wrong place
Public bug reported: This is very similar to bug in Jockey (aka Hardware Drivers): https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jockey/+bug/295158 Issue is that /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon detects if there is ALSA modem automatically. However, for some reason this is broken beginning with Hardy (or maybe even before that), at least for my card, because it looks for modem information in /proc/asound/cards. However, indication that my computer has ALSA modem you can find *only* doing aplay -l, which gives indication that subdevice is modem and it's ALSA address (in my case hw:0,6). my /proc/asound/cards is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0xf470 irq 16 and aplay -l is: List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: Headset [Logitech USB Headset], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio] Subdevices: 0/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 So please fix so sl-modem-daemon init.d script would look into aplay -l results, if it's available (alsa-utils package). [Bug 197946] Re: [hardy] 'Connection Information' is greyed out in pop-up menu when right clicking on Network Manager applet
I have to clarify bug, because something has changed. Original behaviour mentioned in this bug is gone, I can choose Connection Information when I use NM for choosing and connecting to WiFi. However, it is greyed out when I have manual configuration in /etc/network/interfaces or via G-S-T network-admin. FMartins, 'Unlock' button is new auth. thing, aka PolicyKit. Therefore you don't have to use gksudo to enter password. In fact, this is connected to somehow global differences between NM and G-S-T. -- [hardy] 'Connection Information' is greyed out in pop-up menu when right clicking on Network Manager applet https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197946 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Leann, Finally got myself to test Hardy again against my computer. Unfortunately nothing changes. However, I produced shot with photo cam (as it is kernel messages which are hard to dump to text file) to see reset and I/O messages in console while I am trying to copy stuff from one directory to another. I tried to copy to the same disk and to different one - the same problems. I am thinking that it is IRQ conflict. I will remove additional SATA card and try then again. [Bug 152681] Re: Connection Information should display the name/IP of DHCP server
I still experience this problem when I have static configuration in g-s-t. Seemingly then NetworkManager thinks that it doesn't handle this connection and therefore it isn't active. Of course I can dig connection info from g-s-t, but it is two clicks versus approximately five plus entering password. It is of course matter of integrating NM with g-s-t stuff, but it is still a bug - from user point of view, so I will change status to New. ** Changed in: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- Connection Information should display the name/IP of DHCP server https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152681 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 185854] Re: Setting static IP in Network Settings doesn't produce correct data
I tested deb provided by hyperair (big thanks) and however it has wrong depencies (cairo2 version doesn't fit with Hardy), but --force-all cures/b0rks any problems :) Anyway, it would be strange if cairo would affect this :) So I tested in various situations and shortly - it works and I don't even experience bug what Kjell Braden saw - everything updates just normally. I tested several situations: 1. Open network-admin, roaming mode is on, /etc/network/interfaces has only lo entry 2. Press unblock, auth stuff 3. Double click on Wired interface 4. Check out 'Enable roaming mode' checkbox and configure interface according to your needs 5. Click OK 6. Vola! /etc/network/interfaces has auto eth0 (under interface configuration, but who cares for now) and interface is up and running After this, I run second test: 1. Open network admin, roaming mode is disabled, /etc/network/interfaces has address you configured before 2. Press unblock auth stuff 3. Double click on Wired Interface 4. Change address to new one 5. Click OK 6. Vola! /etc/network/interfaces has new ip with still auto eth0 enabled AND new address is up and running (not like bug expierenced by Kjell Braden, as far as I understood) I will do additional line of tests, but this bug seems to be fixed by this patch. [Bug 185854] Re: Setting static IP in Network Settings doesn't produce correct data
If you will read comments on bug mentioned above, you will see that NM static interface configuration is purely SUSE/Redhat thing, as they use service system to control services/settings. It's totally ignores other distro configurations (Debian, Gentoo, etc.). So it is just not the standard way of doing things (tm). G-s-t, however, has system backends for each sytem. [Bug 185854] Re: Setting static IP in Network Settings doesn't produce correct data
Count. about testing: It is interesting that there is some other bug - or implications of same bug - which can be triaged like this: 1. Open network-admin, you have manually configured IP address 2. Unblock, auth. stuff 3. Uncheck Wired Interface checkbox 4. It reappears! 5. /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 line is gone 6. Uncheck checkbox again 7. It stays clean! 8. /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 line is still gone (as intended) 9. Check checkbox for Wired Interface 10. It stays checked as intended, and auto eth0 reappears in /etc/network/interfaces, however now it has at least 5 empty lines between interface configuration and auto eth0 (cosmetic bug, but strange anyway). It is not dangerous as this bug, but something very very fishy happens there and this feels like can be triggered from something else. Also notice that this behavior is for both - standard and patched debs, so patch still must go in, at least to fix default behaviour. KraetziChriZ, RSCS is deadly easy, just follow installing instructions on their webpage (http://rscds.sourceforge.net/installation.php), actually you have to issue just few commands under user 'postgres' (this is how postgres authentification in command line works) and you are done. Also Postgresql on Ubuntu when installed is configured and all in fact you need is to change permissions in pg_hba.conf, which is kinda good, because you can't be careless about security. Keep in mind to add requested row in manual as first, because default is to deny any kind of access from local box without having local user. But RSCDS didn't work with Evolution for last few versions. However, I came up with a fix after long and stubborn debbuging sessions, which is very easy one (if you are not afraid from fixing and compiling new e-d-s deb for you or want to enable it for other distro, follow here http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=514487). I will push it to be included in 2.22. Testing RSCDS with fixed Evo, it is a bliss. True integration with rest of bunch - Thunderbird with Lightning, Sunbird, etc. Keep in mind that what CalDAV server you use is important, because their support for various clients and technology differs heavily. Most of free software caldav clients won't work reliably with Apple Calendar Server, because it extensively uses their extentions, and so it is very fragile and verbose (It doesn't like time zone stuff time to time). Also for some reason only Basic auth works with it. RSCDS, however, works with Diggest without big problems, and you can enable SSL there too, as it uses Apache as HTTP engine. -- CalDAV calenders do not work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This is because of Unicode locale (issue 'locale' command in terminal to see settings), which propably uses non-fixed fonts, so it ends up borked. [Bug 27014] Re: evolution bug, Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync
As this bug is rather important for Evolution, as it shows up very frequently, involved people probably would like to know this: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2008-January/msg00057.html Fragment from this http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213072 = Error Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync 87 dups total, 10 in the last 30 days. [Bug 162006] Re: SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all
Ok, here we go - test with linux-image-2.6.24. 1) I tested with daily Live CD 01-08-2008 (2.6.24-2-generic), it loaded ok, then I tried to select partitions on disk on that controller and format them. Result was total freeze which I could end only with reset. Freeze started slowly, as box were getting overwhelmed by malicious data. After reboot I got borked GRUB at MBR, as it seems tried to write partition table and failed. I have to mention that Live CD with Gutsy kernel, it also crashed, but it didn't succeed in writing anything in hard disk. See dmesg attached for Live CD dmesg with information about devices; 2) Then I tried your suggested method in last comment. I got linux-image-2.6.24-3-generic. Result is: * Slower reading, as mentioned. However, it didn't crash or stopped, I can boot it all the time. Just slowly reading and writing, andwriting is also ok, no bad data or freeze; * Strange errors from CD-ROM device (/dev/hdc), which could be part of problems. For example, when I booted in kernel, message about CD with data and music appeared, however there was no CD in device. Also attached dmesg-hardy-hdd.txt for dmesg dump; I can do any other tests, as I leave this kernel installed for now. Just tell me what you need. ** Attachment added: dmesg-hardy.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11221102/dmesg-hardy.txt -- SATA disk attached to HPT371N controler is very slow or don't work at all https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162006 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Maybe it's just a guess, but there where similar regressions for HighPoint controllers in 2.6.22, which where fixed in 2.6.23. Maybe you should try to compile 2.6.23 Debian style (with deb generation) and then report back if it works or not.
