Hi Leann, I just installed the karmic package linux-image-2.6.31-9-generic. Booting it led to a blank screen, but that's probably because I forgot to disable kernel modesetting. I'll try that again. Also, I am attaching a syslog of a typical freeze. I don't see anything unusual before the freeze, so I am only including the output of Alt-SysRq-Q,W,M after/during the freeze. I would prefer a solution that adapts the actual behaviour to the documentation. User settings in /etc/sysctl.conf ought to take precedence over package settings in /etc/sysctl.d/. Switching the order in /etc/init.d/procps should do the trick. It still is unfortunately. It hadn't happened for a long time and then another freeze occured a couple of days ago. I am not sure if the system was under heavy load, though. I am currently using a kernel.org kernel version 2.6.30.5. If you want the kernel configuration or anything else, let me know. It turns out that this happens when my computer sends a GRE-encapsulated PPP packet with a payload length of 1417. The MTU of the network interface ppp0 is 1412. I believe the VPN gateway accepts packets with a payload length up to 1416. (How can I verify that?) I am not sure whether pptp or pppd is the culprit here, but I suspect pppd. Ah, I see where I went wrong.
Environment variables set in ~/.profile need to be exported in order to
be present in x-session-manager and all its descendants. (Whereas they
will be present in login shells even when they are not exported.) The
line 'PATH=~/bin:${PATH}' (no export) and the fact that everything
worked as expected when logging in on the virtual console made me think
that those variables did not need to be exported.
After adding the appropriate export commands everything works fine.

I assume you refer to the following in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables: In order to set environment variables in a way that effects a user's entire desktop session, one may place commands to set their values in one of the hidden script files in the user's home directory. The more common such files are outlined below. ~/.profile - This is probably the best file for placing environment variable assignments in, since it gets executed automatically by the DisplayManager during the startup process desktop session as well as by the login shell when one logs-in from the textual console. This would indeed resolve this issue, if only it were true. gdm does not, in fact, execute ~/.profile. Since this differs from expected and documented behaviour, I am reopening this bug and assigning it to gdm. I might be having the same problem. While playback of mp3 and ogg files works fine, enabling the crossfader (and restarting rhythmbox) increases rhythmbox's CPU usage from single digits to about 20 or 30%. This is more pronounced for certain audio files than for others--though I haven't been able to discern a pattern yet. Also, starting other applications or opening other windows sometimes causes audio playback to stutter. Under hardy, this is reversed, i.e. I need to press and hold the left Alt key, then press the right Alt key. I think the problem is that CONFIG_X86_TSC is not set in the kernel configuration. Nautilus: Open a window in list view, click on a file (or folder) and quickly click on the file above it. (You need to be rather quick to do this within the double-click interval. You can increase this interval in System - Preferences - Mouse.) This opens the second file. 2. Compiz Expo applet: Hit Super-E to activate the Expo applet. Click on a workspace and quickly click on an adjacent workspace. (You don't have to be quite as quick for this one, as the default double-click interval for the Expo applet is longer.) This activates the second workspace and quits the applet. In both cases, the first click is accepted as a single click (the file or workspace is selected), the second click is accepted as a double- click on the second object (the file is opened, the workspace becomes active). This is not the expected result, as a double-click should only be registered when two clicks occur on the *same* object within the double-click interval. This might be a GNOME bug. Does this happen during a single download or with multiple downloads, i.e. does Thunderbird just download two copies of a message or does it download a second copy of a previously downloaded message at a later time? If you are complaining about the latter issue, I can confirm that behavior. I am not sure, though, if this is a Thunderbird bug. For me, this only happened when the mail server changed the unique-ids (UID) of the messages. Thunderbird uses these unique-ids to determine which messages it has already downloaded. They are supposed to be persistent across sessions (cf. RFC 1939). Thus, downloading these messages again after the server illegally changed their UIDs might not qualify as a Thunderbird bug. I can confirm this behaviour. I am not sure that you've correctly identified the cause, though. Looking at the disassembled machine code for both function calls, I found that 'printf(%s\n)' isn't handled by printf() at all -- the compiler inserts a call to puts() instead. puts(), in turn, calls strlen(), passing it a null pointer, which strlen() tries to dereference. Hence, the segmentation fault. One more thing: Is this actually a bug? I mean, the inconsistency is due to gcc's substituting puts() for printf(). Calling puts() with a null pointer results in a segfault. But isn't it the programmer's job to make sure that he doesn't accidentally pass a null pointer to puts() -- or to printf(%s\n) for that matter? Indeed, adding gvim to the menu (in System-Preferences-Main Menu), solves both problems, i.e. the Run Application dialog now includes GVim Text Editor in the list of known applications and displays the icon when I enter gvim in the text box. The man page for pam_unix has the following to say about the nullok_secure option that is used in /etc/pam.d/common-auth: The default action of this module is to not permit the user access to a service if their official password is blank. The nullok_secure argument overrides this default and allows any user with a blank password to access the service as long as the value of PAM_TTY is set to one of the values found in /etc/securetty. Thus, the behavior of the module is as documented; it's a feature, not a bug! =) So, the only possible fix would be changing nullok_secure to nullok as per Zealot's fix above (or globally in /etc/pam.d/common-auth). Isn't this a PAM bug? I get the same result as Kristian Erik Hermansen above, namely that login is rejected by pam_securetty. However, I do not quite see why pam_securetty should be run. grep -r pam_securetty /etc/pam.d /etc/pam.d/login:auth requisite pam_securetty.so So, if I am not mistaken, pam_securetty should only be run for the login service, not for gdm. Also, /usr/share/doc/libpam-doc/html/pam-6.html#ss6.23 states for the pam_securetty module: Provides standard Unix securetty checking, which causes authentication for root to fail unless PAM_TTY is set to a string listed in the /etc/securetty file. For all other users, it succeeds. I may be having a different problem than other posters on this bug report. My internet connection is a WPA-secured wireless connection. The interface is brought up at boot time, and NTP is started. However, the wireless card does not connect to the router before I log in and enter my keyring password (which unlocks the WPA password). At that time, ntpd has already figured out that it cannot connect to any of the time servers: Oct 7 14:17:43 localhost ntpd_initres[5377]: couldn't resolve `ntp.ubuntu.com', giving up on it Now, when the wireless interface connects to the router and gets configured via DHCP, NTP does not do anything anymore. I guess that most people using laptops with WPA-secured wireless networks suffer from the same problem. What is the correct behaviour for an init script if it is called with the reload argument when the daemon is not running? Should it output an error message or fail silently? In the former case, /etc/logrotate.d/tor might be fixed by changing the above lines to: postrotate /etc/init.d/tor reload /dev/null 2 /dev/null endscript This will redirect standard error to /dev/null as well, so that the error message no longer reaches logrotate. I am still seeing this bug under gutsy tribe 5. Also, I have recently noticed that what is shown on the screen is not exactly *random* garbage. There is usually a resemblance between the colors in this strip at the bottom of the screen and what I had previously viewed on my screen. Recently, a part of a Thunderbird window that I had had on the screen showed up as the rightmost part of this strip after I logged out. (Thus, the random garbage seems to come from some sort of buffer, I guess.) This bug does not seem to be a duplicate of #65821. That bug report's discussion answered my question about debug output, though (which, by the way, should be answered by the man page, in my opinion). The crucial difference between logging in with TLS and logging in without TLS seems to be that the server advertises the PLAIN login mechanism if and only if I log in using TLS. (Otherwise, the LOGIN mechanism is used, which works fine.) The problem with the PLAIN mechanism seems to be that mutt sends an initial client response, i.e. a AUTHENTICATE PLAIN base64-encoded username and password This is not a valid IMAP command. RFC 3501 states in section 6.2.2: The AUTHENTICATE command does not support the optional initial response feature of [SASL]. I will try to find out whether this is a bug in mutt itself or a library. Hmm. It seems that this not a bug (or flea), after all. The server advertises the SASL-IR capability, which means that it should be ready to accept an initital response as optional argument to the AUTHENTICATE command, according to http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft- siemborski-imap-sasl-initial-response-06 Therefore, it seems that mutt is completely right to send the authentication message as it does. Okay, this is getting curiouser and curiouser... The server does indeed accept the initial response argument, but not from mutt. If I copy the authentication string sent by mutt from the debug log, and paste it into an openssl session, it works. In mutt, it doesn't. Now I am somewhat at my wit's end. What could possibly cause the server to accept that string from openssl, but not from mutt? Timing issues? Line terminator? Mere prejudice? Is there some sort of heisenbug in mutt after all? I have this issue, too. (I don't see Audio in the Preferences Menu, though. The closest I have is System Preferences Sound System Beep Enable System Beep. I guess this is just a difference in translation.) Since I get no beeps on the virtual console, either, I suspect that this is a kernel issue. (I do have a speaker on my computer and esd works fine.) I suddenly have the same issue on my Samsung X20 XVM 1730 V laptop. I am almost certain that it worked until a couple of days ago. I haven't changed the configuration. Has any update changed the /apps/gnome-power-manager/action_button_suspend recently? I can confirm that setting the proxy settings with gnome-network-preferences works. There is still the issue with the freeze, though. If rhythmbox cannot connect to an Internet radio station, it should fail gracefully. Should I file this as another bug or will you re-open this one? [Bug 106891] Re: signal strength is fluctuating heavily
This may be purely coincidental, but the wired interface is now configured as well, even though no cable has been plugged in there since bootup. It has an IP address (in the 192.168.0.0/24 range, not in the avahi 169.254.0.0/24 range) and is set as a default route (in addition to a default route through the wireless interface). I don't think I have seen this before, but I am not completely certain.
