The thanks are to the individuals handling the bug and arriving at a solution. Alberto Milone, for instance, has been in on a couple of bugs I've reported/followed. Bugs happen. It's a fact of life. They get reported and they get fixed (hopefully). From a systemic viewpoint, however, this case is an especially troubling problem. The issue was identified in -proposed and not resolved. 14.04.1, 12.04.4, 14.10 and 15.04 (development) all work. You could use 14.04(.2) or 12.04(.5) until this is sorted out and then upgrade. Just don't install the Hardware Enablement Stack for now. [Bug 1424491] Re: apt-get fails to install fglrx or fglrx-updates in 14.04.2 and 12.04.5
For clarity: I attempted the following on my test machine: 1. Upgrade from 14.04.1 with the driver installed. I always recommend against this, but I attempted it anyway in the interest of testing. 2. From a fresh installation of 14.01.1, install the driver, remove the driver, upgrade and then re-install the driver. 3. Install 14.04.2 fresh, update and then install the driver. All methods failed similarly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1424491 Title: apt-get fails to install fglrx or fglrx-updates in 14.04.2 and 12.04.5 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1424491/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 642518] Re: [MASTER] package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: Kernel fix for CVE-2010-3081 breaks fglrx
Fortunately, I keep my ear to the ground and was aware of this problem before I updated. I would have been able to dig myself out of it, but it would certainly have raised by blood pressure. Since the fix was made available in -updates, this worked for me: Completely uninstall Catalyst 10.9. Reinstall Catalyst 10.4 from the repo. Perform updates. Restart. I am not going to move forward with installing the later Catalyst versions at this point. But I must say something, and I hope the developers and MOTUs will take this as constructive criticism. I understand that you all work very hard, and I appreciate that. I admire you. Lucid is an LTS. People expect it to be stable. They do not expect that some strange-sounding thing like compat_alloc_user_space, which they don't know from a hole in the ground, should change suddenly, causing them to have difficulty with their video driver. Understandably, this is difficult with driver versions later than the ones in the repos, but changes should work at least with what is in the repos. The driver affected, per the original bug report, is the one that is in the Lucid repo. CVE-2010-3081 is a critical bug fix that plugs a hole that can allow a nefarious outside user to root an exploited machine. The likelihood that someone's personal machine would be attacked is small, but it is real. This whole thing would have gone right past a headless server without notice. A critical update to the kernel was needed and provided. Unwitting users, perhaps with little tech know-how, diligently updated their machines and broke their ATI drivers because there was a change in other files that kept the driver from being compiled against the kernel correctly. They were left with machines that would not operate as expected. They were first offered a patch, which many might not have understood how to apply. Finally some 24 - 36 hours later, they were given an update that works with the driver in the repo. Their ability to use it depends somewhat on whether they are able to get themselves out of whatever mire they may have gotten themselves into in the meantime. Sorry, guys, but this smells very strongly of failure coordinate effort and conduct appropriate testing. I've been doing the computer gig for 35 years. This is just not the sort of thing I find acceptable. -- [MASTER] package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: Kernel fix for CVE-2010-3081 breaks fglrx https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/642518 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 545762] [NEW] Installation of fglrx-amdcccle 2:8.721-0ubuntu5 crashes video
Public bug reported: Release: Lucid Lynx Package: fglrx-amdcccle 2:8.721-0ubuntu5 Expected behavior: Installation expected to drive video properly Actual behavior: After installation, system allowed me to select user and enter password. Immediately thereafter, however, the screen went blank. It was not simply a blank screen Xserver issue. The monitors actually lost signal and stopped. Remediation: Reboot, drop to root with networking, remove fglrx and fglrx-amdcccle, reboot. Unfortunately, I had not previously changed the logging flag in bootlogd to yes to capture the boot messages, so I can't be of help there. I will see what other logging I can dig up to help with the process of debugging. Killing an X session is one thing. Killing output from the card to the monitors is probably not good on the hardware. [Bug 387720] Re: nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 video driver fails in karmic
[ 15.612398] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel. [ 15.612408] Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint The nVidia module is not being inserted into the kernel at boot time. Also nVidia lists the card as legacy. They are making no more updates to the driver. Xorg has moved on. It is not likely, as with older AMD/ATI legacy cards, that this card will work with current and future versions of Xorg, since it is doubtful that Xorg will spend much effort in trying to provide backwards compatibility with every possible legacy card every OEM has ever manufactured. I have some old Matrox cards in the garage. My guess is that they would not work. -- nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 video driver fails in karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387720 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 387720] Re: nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 video driver fails in karmic
Sorry folks. I hadn't checked in on this in some time. I believe the issue has turned out to be that the said GPU is in nVidia's legacy pile and is no longer supported. This was a very old test machine which I no longer use. -- nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 video driver fails in karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387720 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 432315] Re: [ASUSTeK Computer INC. 1005HA] late resume failure
I have the same problems for both the 32 and 64 bit versions on 32 and 64 bit machines.. Happens both after installing updates from repos in Alpha 5 AND when using latest Alpha 6 images on CD for a fresh install. In the case of fresh install, I encounter the problems directly from the CD when: attempting to run LiveCD; attempting to install; checking disk for defects. -- [ASUSTeK Computer INC. 1005HA] late resume failure https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432315 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 387720] [NEW] nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 video driver fails in karmic
Public bug reported: Release: karmic (squeeze/sid). lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] (rev b2) On restart after upgrading from 9.04 (where card worked with 3D acceleration) to 9.10, X failed to start. Was forced to log in from command line. X started, but low resolution was forced. Used Restricted Driver manager to enable nVidia driver (nvidia-glx-96 was only choice) and attempted shut down and reboot. There was no improvement. Installed nVidia glx-180 driver (sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-180). On reboot, was able to get generally normal graphics and resolution, except that there was no 3D acceleration and Compiz would not function. Attempted to use Restricted Driver manager again. The only choice was the 96 driver. On shut down and reboot, the problem recurred. Reinstalled nVidia-glx-180. Currently have usable screen, but no 3D acceleration or advanced desktop effects. Have not attempted nVidia- glx-173 or nVidia-glx-71. Attempting to use NVIDIA X Server Settings app reports that it does not appear that NVIDIA X driver is installed. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 video driver fails in karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387720 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 372345] Re: Compiz memory leak / Xorg memory leak
If anyone is still interested. I was going to CP the link, but didn't get the C part, apparently. www.x.org's bug site directed me to bugzilla. Apparently this is a regression from an earlier version of Xorg. The bug was reopened very recently with Priority: High Severity: Major It's not Jaunty or Compiz related. It's a bug in the latest Xorg. -- Compiz memory leak / Xorg memory leak https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/372345 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 353800] Re: restricted drivers (ATI) causes Xorg memory leakage
